Well, not that I didn't try, anyway. And sorry dark, but I don't see how you can't see this?
(...saaaay, when's the last time you've had your vision checked by a good Optomo..Optimol...EYE DOCTOR?!)
I only go to bad eye doctors.

Well, SURE "it's easy", but it's still NOT as "easy" as it SHOULD BE!!!
It's not? I don't see how it could be any easier.

Can't you just hire somebody to dig a ditch?
Sorry, I'm wandering ...
Try not to wander into a ditch.

Yes, I think it took a few years for old Hollywood to shake things off and take notice of what was going on internationally in countries like England, Italy, France, Sweden and Japan. It was time to take bolder steps.
In Cold Blood, Bonnie and Clyde, Cool Hand Luke, In the Heat of the Night, The Graduate and even The Dirty Dozen were all good American films of 1967. My own favourite of that year is still Bunuel's Belle de Jour.
'The Incident' was also '67. 'Night of the Generals' too. And 'Waterhole #3'. And 'Reflections in a Golden Eye' - that was the one that forced changes to the ratings traditions. And 'Point Blank'. And 'Valley of the Dolls' And 'Wait Until Dark' 'And 'Hombre'. I could come up with others. What a year!

Now that one I always thought sounded dumb. I used to have a friend who said that a lot, you'd ask her almost any question and she's go "yup- per".
No wonder she sounded dumb. She was saying it wrong.
It's yip, not yup.
-
She was kind of a character actress from the get go. Not someone that was cast easily in films for a wide audience. She only came into her own as she got older, I think. (despite her early Oscar win)......
She sure was good in 'The Sound and the Fury' (1958) - same year she did 'Long Hot Summer' wasn't it?
Super character actor!

There's a little scrolling, yes. But not much - and it's better than clicking on another spot and having to go to another page.
Hey, I've said it and I'm not gonna unsay it - I like the way TCM is set up. I have no problem at all and think that people who keep insisting they do have a problem are overstating it considerably.
I was able to adjust to it within a minute or so. It's been two years and some people are still going on about this? It's easy, people!

Yes, that's true. Paul was bigger box office. But Joanne did take time out to have 3 kids, so that kind of derailed her career for awhile in the early 60s.
I guess that's what DGF meant by "intentional"?
Sure made a lot of movies anyway. Quite a busy actor she was.
Kids or no kids, Paul was and would still have been the bigger star, so it's a moot point in terms of intentionality. The "back seat" as DGF denotes it was decided by the paying public.

Aaaah, the good ol' days...and back when that phrase actually meant what it meant!
LOL
(...sorry, couldn't resist...carry on, folks)
Was she wearing a flight suit with a giant cod piece when she said it?

Just an older dvd which looks to be put out by Columbia in 2003. I'm sure the Criterion will be great. I may have to pick one up for X-mas!
That 1967 was a watershed year for filmmaking!
There'd been signs of the coming "new Hollywood" since '63, but in '67 it exploded with a plethora of really excellent movies with a whole new non-traditional esthetic. 'In Cold Blood' is but one excellent example of that.

Wasn't there a UHF option on the dial too? (LOL!) Cant remember what UHF meant........Ultra High Frequency?? For higher numbered channels?
Didn't see a uhf dial until the 70's.
Shortly after that it was on to the Jerrold Converter and dials may as well have not have existed anymore.

I'm curious why you find this method better.
I click on the thread and presto, I'm right there on the page where all the most recent posts are.
Understand now?

Wine is not permitted in the public library.
Then what's in all those little brown bags I see most of the men there hiding in their pockets?
-
And why was there no channel one?
I asked my dad that very question. He didn't know.

I have no problem with the occasional "yup". Or "nope", for that matter.
I suppose depending on the situation and on my mood, I can go with " yup", "yeah", "yes", or even "indeed". (like Joe Clark.)

This is not my assumption. I've read it more than once.
You believe everything you read?
I suggest using your common sense to figure it out.
Lots of people would say "let's see the new Paul Newman movie". Fewer would say "let's see the new Joanne Woodward movie". Nothing she could do to change that.
-
..and Woodward intentionally took a back seat to Newman for the rest of her career.
Doubt that. Newman was better box office, that's all.
If it was her that had been better box-office, you might be saying he took a back seat to her.
It was what it was - they got what they got. The paying customers decided, not Woodward. It's not like she didn't work - she was a very busy actress from the 50's to the 70's. Lots of movies. I don't call that taking a back seat.
-
Yup, lav, they're back.
Clearly I spoke too soon.
Wouldn't it be nice if the TCM board techies could come up with something to screen it out once and for all ?
Yup? I think all the Gary Cooper talk is affecting you, missw.

She took a 9 year sabbatical after 1967 and only worked sporadically after that (her choice). She turned down countless roles.
She retired from film-acting, yes. Or semi-retired, if we prefer to think that way. That she did so when she was still on top in terms of box-office and fan adoration, is impressive.
Came out of retirement briefly to do a movie with Connery.
I guess, considering she did what she wanted to do, she had exactly the career she wanted to have, which is a pretty darn perfect career trajectory.

Then I can only surmise you do no not understand most of what I have said and/or do not care what others have had to say in the thread i.e. don't read all the comments that have been made since your last visit to each thread, because if you would click the "last comment" button on the left of the thead instead of the thread title it would still take you to the 1st unread comment in the thread.
You surmise incorrectly. I understand perfectly. Unlike you, I have no problem with most recent first - I find it better than the original post first layout. I understand you have a problem: you just can't adapt to it.

You and others who like the way the forums now obviously haven't been on many other forums or haven't paid much attention to how they work or you would understand the other way is much better.
Been in many forums over the past 16 years. I prefer most recent post first like it is here. It's easy, so it's a mystery to me that you have such an issue with it.

I don't think it's unfair to just admit you don't care for an actor. There is sometimes no explanation for it, but the face, the voice, something, just doesn't work for a person. Not everybody likes everybody the same.
Like Meryl Streep. It would be foolish of me to state that she has no acting talent - yet I've never enjoyed watching her in any movie. I just am cold to her and I don't know why. Maybe a past life thing, I don't know.
Apart from 'High Noon', I've always found Cooper to ne kinda boring. It's difficult for me to honestly appraise his talent because I'm bored by him. Like with Streep, I can see them going through the motions of acting - saying the words - acting sad or happy or angry, but for whatever reason I tend to be unconvinced - unreached.
Chemistry. It's a mysterious thing.

Dial? Is that not a brand of soap? Was it promotional for them to impress television schedules into the soap so that a person taking a bath might look to see what they might watch later that night or the next day?
Just so long as the schedule is limited to channels 2 through 13. That's all the dial ever allowed for.

People often use the word wooden to describe him, but I've found that bovine is a much more accurate

That made me laugh. Thanks.

And you won't - because it's called 'A Guide for the Married Man'.
Robert Morse and Walter Matthau lead - love that movie!
PS. The first of the "Billy Jack" movies was in '67. It was called 'The Born Losers' and it was a huge hit in Toronto. Saw it at a midnight showing of its premiere and the packed house loved it.
