November Schedule -- Norma Shearer as SotM!
darkblue replied to Capuchin's topic in General Discussions
I chuckled when I read that - TCM shows 'Point Blank' every couple of weeks, it seems. It's kind of like someone saying they haven't had a chance to catch 'North By Northwest' - it's eluded them. After an explosion of interesting titles in October, I find November to be back to the usual quantity of record-worthy offerings for me. I'm most happy about 'The Strange One' (1957) finally getting another airing. This was Ben Gazzara's first movie - and he is amazing. Also George Peppard's - his forthcoming screen persona is immediately evident in this. There is more than one strange character in this film. And there is an unmistakable homosexual vibe present - I watched it back in the early 60's and found it both off-putting and fascinating at the same time. Really glad to have the chance to add it to my collection. I'm also very pleased to see 'Summer of '42' (1972) on the schedule. I can't remember the last time TCM ran this, if ever. In terms of movies that have induced both sweet and sorrowful emotion within me, this one is high on the list. After leaving the theatre, I found that even just hearing the theme on the radio in the months following would affect me quite poignantly. I'd also like to say that, when I look back at which years have been significant to me in my movie-watching life, 1958 tends to stand out as the first really interesting year in which many movies seemed to take on a new aura to them - greater edge, realness, disturbingness - unusualness from what had been produced by Hollywood previously. Not that it's necessarily an example of that, but I'm happy to get another chance to add 'Frankenstein 1970' (1958) to my collection as well. Good old Boris is terrific as always in this latter day variation on a theme. -

Take off those glasses, let down that hair, and Oh, Baby - she's a hot one! -

Things? He has more than one? I know, I know - you meant his thighs. Does sound kinda perilous to his own "walnuts", though. -
The list I have includes anyone in my collection. Presently that's about a thousand artists. I do have a Perry Como cd. I bought it for my mother as a birthday gift, and when she died I just took it and added it to my own collection. There's actually 3 or 4 songs on it that I like at least a little.

The Egyptian on TCM Sat. 8/1. How'd that happen?

Buried with a donkey He's my favorite honkee King Tut -
No way. There's no chance I could ever pare a list down to 10 (or 15). As Perry Como might've put it, "it's impossible".

Well, it's a good list for sure. I don't understand why you'd have The Police on it but not The Cars, because I think the Cars are better. But, hey - that's just me.

Excellent movie.

That would have been wonderful!

There's no way to not like Michael Caine, as an actor or as a person. He's too natural as both.

For many, many years 'Get Carter' was my favorite Michael Caine movie. He is a very hard case in this - and he gets more and more vengeful as the movie progresses. The coldness he brought to the role of Jack is perfect. When he made this in 1971, it was somewhat surprising to see him playing such a part. But it impressed the hell out of me. I remember the trailer for the movie playing the week before it hit the neighborhood theatre. It went something like "When you've got a problem like this, who do you get to hit the best hit-man in the business?". That alone got me pretty interested in seeing the movie - hit men were still relatively scarce as main characters back then. I was not disappointed by the movie. I've seen it about 12 times now. It's unusual for Caine, but he's genuinely frightening in 'Get Carter'. It wouldn't be until he played the part of Joseph Stalin in 'When Lions Roar' (1994) that I would feel him inducing that kind of fear from the screen again.

HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

It's good that they gave a special advisory to hysterical women. I'm sure we all know how alarming it can be when oodles of women get hysterical in a movie theater. -
Yep, the movies never do justice to the writings. Maybe if he wasn't such a damn good writer. I love some of his stuff - Misery, It!, The Shining, Salem's Lot, Firestarter. I just read 'The Stand' for the first time. Long one. I was so disappointed with the tv movie of It!. Probably his most enjoyable book (well, for me anyway). The general consensus of movie/book comparisons for his work seems to be that only 'Carrie' (1976) is a truly good film adaptation. Although, I know 'The Shining' has its fans - of which I'm not really one.

Hey, those are two of my favorites as well. I also like 'Since You're Gone' and 'Why Can't I Have You?' a lot. But truth be told, almost all their songs are pretty darn good. Great band!

It would be lovely if TCM could obtain all of the Harry Palmer movies for showing. Great character, great actor. -
As is proven time and time again in these forums, some people have no appreciation for a movie of genuine quality. They just wanna see the same old boring stuff again and again.

While I admit he's nifty on his feet, I'm fairly indifferent to Fred Astaire. However, I did like him very much in 'Ghost Story' (1981). No dancing or singing in that one - just some serious worry for old Fred. -
I just watched 'The Blair Witch Project' (1999) again. That movie always affects me. I can always put myself in the position of those kids and feel what they would be feeling if those were actual things being experienced. What a terrifying, [...] trip! Has to be the most effective found footage-themed movie ever - brilliantly marketed back then to provide the most chilling experience possible. I've seen lots of comments at IMDb that "say" the movie isn't scary, but I believe that anyone that can't put them selves in the position those kids are in - that can't feel it - is blocking.

Nothing worse than when, on Drew Carey's show, it was revealed that his full name was Drew Alison Carey - to which Mimi exclaimed "Oh, my God - all three of your names are girls' names". -
