  1. I don't know if it's the photo show accompanying, but I like the country tonk version much more than the hit version.

When I look at images of Brian, I feel heartbreak. There's a sweetness to his face that isn't present in any of the others.

  2. I haven't heard it for a while anyway, Holden. But you're right. Kathleen Turner has one of the sexiest voices since Bacall asked Bogie if he knew how to whistle.

(...and I'm sure the very reason she was offered the role in which she says lines such as, "I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way", in that movie about a rabbit being framed for murder)

Reminds me of when Homer Simpson was blindfolded as they were doing a "this is your life" bit and Krusty the Clown says "hey Homer, remember me" and Homer goes "brrrrowwwtthh, (imagine Orbison's growl in 'Pretty Woman'), Kathleen Turner!"

  3. I loved 'One hour Photo' (2002). Some people I knew said they thought it wasn't very good, but I know some pretty un-insightful people. I wouldn't call it a film-noir, though - or neo-noir, as the case may be.

It's a tragedy about a lonely conservative man who simply can't understand why those who have such

gifted lives with family and loved ones - a life that he would give his right arm to have - disrespect, dishonour such a gift. It causes him to psychologically break somewhat, and do something he should not do. Robin Williams is perfect in the role, showing so much of the sensitive human-ness he's shown before - most memorably long ago in 'The World According to Garp' (1982).

Whenever the term "neo-noir" is raised, the very first movie I think of is 'Johnny Handsome' (1989).

Man, would I love to see that one again.

  4. IN A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE Marlon Brando gives the impression of mumbling without actually mumbling

His dialogue is clearly understood but a great many viewers of the movie come away from it thinking that he slurred his speech.

Just another testament to the brilliance of Marlon Brando.

I had a professor in college who saw him in STREETCAR on Broadway. She'd heard people comment about Brando's "mumbling," but she said seeing his performance as Stanley Kowalski was like watching a great Shakespearean actor in command of his craft and also seeing something viscerally real.

I've never had any problem making out the words he speaks - in any movie.

I think it was just so unusual that he was natural rather than stagey in his enunciating that people weren't used to it and, not liking it when the unexpected happens, called it "mumbling" to voice their qualms about something new in film-acting.

  5. I'm reminded of Vaughn Meader, who had a lucrative career impersonating JFK.  The night of the assassination Lenny Bruce had a night club show and people were anticipating what he would say.  He stood on the stage several in silence for minutes before saying, "Boy, is Vaughn Meader f@#%ed."  Or so the story goes!

    I remember Vaughn. I was 11 or 12.

"er, let me say this about that"

  6. So those not normally into Hitchcock are pretty much unaware of Walker's performance? It's not as if this is some obscure film.

Those who are not normally into Hitchcock probably haven't seen it - so yes, I'd say they're probably pretty much unaware of Walker's performance.

Having heard of a movie doesn't mean being familiar with it.

  7. Last night I watched King Solomon's Mines, with Stewart Granger, Deborah Kerr and Richard Carlson.  What a fantastic movie!  The plot involves an English guide and hunter (Granger), living in Africa, who agrees to help a woman find her lost husband.  To me the film was less about the plot and more about scenic Africa itself: the animals, the tribal cultures, the danger and the fascination.  The character of Allan Quartermain (the Indiana Jones of 1950) was slightly cartoonishly drawn and acted, but Kerr's acting was good.  I was impressed by the filming of the scenes with the tribal men (the camera was the impartial observer of the activity; nothing looked 'choreographed'), and there was one scene showing the stampeding of groups of animals that was impressive.  This is a movie to see on the big screen!

If anyone knows of other adventure films as good as this one, please post it here.

I would love to see the 1985 version of 'King Solomon's Mines' with Richard Chamberlain. Somehow I missed it back then, but I remember that critics absolutely lambasted it for its "racism".

Yeah, whatever. The friends I knew who saw it thought it was terrific. But I think the critics must've won out because the movie has virtually disappeared. And I haven't gotten to see it, dammit!

  8. Wondering if TCM has ever had a Giallo fest. Would be fun to see some of the stuff from Bava, Argento and even Franju.

Not really. Once in a very blue moon TCM has shown the odd one - usually on Underground - but it's like pulling teeth to get them to show any kind of quantity of such product.

  9. True, but Trump has already made quite a few slips. It all matters when one is offended. His early remarks about Mexican immigrants were fairly offensive, but that didn't put him in much trouble within the GOP. His remarks about women got him into trouble and many of the other candidates jumped on him, but it didn't seem to hurt him in the polls. He make yet cross the line, but in the meantime I'm going to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

Yeah, he's already crossed the line. Imagine if he really is still on the ballot next year - do you see many Hispanics voting for him?

Who knows how many "groups" he will alienate before the election actually happens? Women, African-Americans, Asians, Teachers, the Civil Service, Cops, the Elderly - the possibilities are numerous.

Someone said that he might be running right now to help Hillary. It's just as likely he's running to help some of those Republican cretins look better - make them look more reasonable than they really are.

Whatever he's doing, for whatever reasons, it's hella fun watching him wind so many people up.

  10. Trump, Sanders and Warren are all unelectable in Nov., unless they run against each other.

While many people may say they support or will vote for Trump or Sanders or Warren in a poll, when they get behind the curtain in Nov. - won't happen.  Probably not even in the primaries.

Clinton is pretty weak as a candidate and so is Bush III.

For better or worse, the electoral college still controls the Presidential election and there are too many swing states where moderates prevail.

A Sanders or Warren Presidency would guarantee a Republican veto proof majority in the next election. There would be zero safe Democratic seats anymore.

    Yeah, so what's new?

  11. Yes, HEARTS OF THE WEST is a great movie that TCM introduced me to.

Jeff Bridges is so cute in this one. Playing a writer - and something of a rube - as he's being carried out, wounded, on a stretcher, he's reciting "the room lit up with gunfire", already writing about it out loud.

I've always found Jeff to be a likeable actor. Very much enjoyed watching his work right from the very beginning of his career.

  12. I reallly am considering cancelling my TCM station here in Toronto, Canada

with my cable package in order to have TCM I need to have a lot of stations that I don't watch

also TCM just keeps showing the same movies all the time and the website is also not great

and the ulimtate insult is when they advertise a certain movie on facebook and it is not even shown here in Canada

I remember last summer when they focused on Faye Dunnaway

instead of the movie selections they had on the US schedule here in Canada they had one movie on 3 times in one day at different times

there has been talk that someday we will be able to choose the stations we want but how long will that take

For about the past 6 weeks or so, TCM as carried by Rogers Cable here in Cambridge, Ontario has had numerous quirks of momentary pixellations and what I can only describe as partial screen outages (like a couple of inches here and there popping up at any location on the screen). I record movies for my collection - have been doing so for years without this sort of thing. Now, many recordings I consider to be ruined because of these recent flaws in the cable feed.

With about 10 of the channels now record-blocking (started in May), there's becoming less and less reason to keep cable.

But I will really feel the loss of TCM if I do cut the cord - some of what they show is very hard to come by (or very expensive comparatively-speaking).

  13. He'll cross the line eventually, from cute-outrageous to offensive-outrageous

He's never been "cute" outrageous. No loud-mouthed braggart-billionaire with that ridiculously multi-styled fire-start fluff sitting atop such a can-of-worms face as he has could ever be considered "cute" to begin with - and certainly not when his face contorts with his customary sneering proclamations and insults.

How can one cross a line when they deliberately skip back and forth across that line as joyously as he does?

  14. But that's the interesting thing about Trump: He seems to be immune to hoof and mouth disease. It may be calculated -- he knows that the outrageous things he says appeals to a segment of the Republican Party.

Exactly. Trump doesn't care if he offends people. No matter what shame anybody (mostly the media) tries to put on him, he simply refuses to wear it. What he's already said would be foot-in-mouth for professional politician-cowards, but he's not scared like they are.

I don't see him getting elected - and I also don't see him caring about how we react to his free speech at any point.

  15. Interesting Raspberries comparison--there is a similarity.  Here's my favorite song of theirs from the same Old Grey Whistle Test appearance.  I might have posted this before, so sorry for any duplication.

Hmm. On that one they remind me of Barclay James Harvest.

  16. Well Hillary's husband picked some pretty good justices -- in fact the best of the current bunch -- Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

I like Warren and Sanders but they can't get elected.  My cliche for today (and every day): The perfect is the enemy of the good.

    Clinton perfect?

    Puking now.

  17. On a couple of shows today, I heard that Trump is doing this to help Hillary. Of course that's conspiracy nonsense, but if it's true (or if it's just an incidental effect), it's fine with me!

I would much rather it ended up helping someone better than Hillary - Elizabeth Warren would be far preferable and wouldn't lose the feminist vote - or Bernie Sanders, who is a much better and more honest person than any Clinton. Even Joe would make a far better president for Americans than that lying snot.

But if it is Hillary it helps, so be it. At least she'll maybe nominate someone to the Supreme Court (if it comes up) who's not a total fascist. Maybe.

  18. What a day!

Even though we in Canada do not get the excellent 'Cooperstown' (1993) - I can't believe TCM is not able to show that little-known entry up here - there are no less than 9 titles I'm set to record - and that doesn't include 'Wait Until Dark' or 'The Heart is a Lonely Hunter', his greatest (probably) performances being those, because I already have them.

With Alan Arkin, Michael Caine, Warren Oates and George C. Scott honoured this year, it's been one of my favorite SUTS years - SUTS being something I'm not usually all that hepped-up about.
