You said "great band". Here are my top ten rock/soul acts
1---Rolling Stones
2---David Bowie
3---The Who
4----U2
5---Stevie Wonder
6---Police
7---Marvin Gaye
8----Steely Dan
9---Bob Dylan
10--Elvis Costello/Talking Heads/Pretenders (tie)
Well, it's a good list for sure. I don't understand why you'd have The Police on it but not The Cars, because I think the Cars are better. But, hey - that's just me.

I think his best film was the wonderful EDUCATING RITA (1983)
Excellent movie.
-
Why no ALFIE or SLEUTH?
That would have been wonderful!

"It’s like when people ask me why I made 'The Swarm' – I made 'The Swarm' because my mother needed a house to live in," he told the online magazine Sabotage Times in 2013. "Then I made 'Jaws 4' because she was lonely and I needed to buy her a bigger house which she could live in with all of her friends. It’s that simple."
There's no way to not like Michael Caine, as an actor or as a person. He's too natural as both.

For many, many years 'Get Carter' was my favorite Michael Caine movie.
He is a very hard case in this - and he gets more and more vengeful as the movie progresses. The coldness he brought to the role of Jack is perfect. When he made this in 1971, it was somewhat surprising to see him playing such a part. But it impressed the hell out of me.
I remember the trailer for the movie playing the week before it hit the neighborhood theatre. It went something like "When you've got a problem like this, who do you get to hit the best hit-man in the business?". That alone got me pretty interested in seeing the movie - hit men were still relatively scarce as main characters back then. I was not disappointed by the movie. I've seen it about 12 times now.
It's unusual for Caine, but he's genuinely frightening in 'Get Carter'. It wouldn't be until he played the part of Joseph Stalin in 'When Lions Roar' (1994) that I would feel him inducing that kind of fear from the screen again.

It's good that they gave a special advisory to hysterical women. I'm sure we all know how alarming it can be when oodles of women get hysterical in a movie theater.

Stephen King has fared badly on the big screen--no argument there--but there are 2 tv miniseries based on his work that were relatively well done--the 1979 mini-series "Salems Lot" was very well done--I saw it when it first aired (I was 14)--& the 1996 mini-series "The Stand" wasn't bad--the book is SO much better--the Unedited version is over 1200 pages--but if you want a book to give you nightmares, this is the book--"Night Shift", a book of short stories, opens with a prequel to "Salem's Lot" & ends with a sequel--both are scary--plus a short story that reads like a trial run for "The Stand","Night Surf".
Yep, the movies never do justice to the writings. Maybe if he wasn't such a damn good writer. I love some of his stuff - Misery, It!, The Shining, Salem's Lot, Firestarter. I just read 'The Stand' for the first time. Long one.
I was so disappointed with the tv movie of It!. Probably his most enjoyable book (well, for me anyway).
The general consensus of movie/book comparisons for his work seems to be that only 'Carrie' (1976) is a truly good film adaptation. Although, I know 'The Shining' has its fans - of which I'm not really one.

My two favorite Cars' songs are not among t their better-known ones.........":Candy-O" and "Heartbeat City"
Hey, those are two of my favorites as well. I also like 'Since You're Gone' and 'Why Can't I Have You?' a lot.
But truth be told, almost all their songs are pretty darn good. Great band!

It would be lovely if TCM could obtain all of the Harry Palmer movies for showing.
Great character, great actor.
-
The film affected me too. I was affected with contempt, blah blah blah .......I heard a guy at a urinal give his own short critique when he said, "My girlfriend talked me into going to this thing."
As is proven time and time again in these forums, some people have no appreciation for a movie of genuine quality. They just wanna see the same old boring stuff again and again.

What’s it all about …
Michael Caine day.
That's the name of his autobiography, I believe.

My wife loves Fred's dancing and in that regard he is her favorite dancer but she doesn't find him attractive and she doesn't enjoy his singing. She does feel he has a certain amount of charm but nothing close to William Powell or other actors known for that quality.
While I admit he's nifty on his feet, I'm fairly indifferent to Fred Astaire. However, I did like him very much in 'Ghost Story' (1981). No dancing or singing in that one - just some serious worry for old Fred.
-
I just watched 'The Blair Witch Project' (1999) again.
That movie always affects me. I can always put myself in the position of those kids and feel what they would be feeling if those were actual things being experienced. What a terrifying, [...] trip!
Has to be the most effective found footage-themed movie ever - brilliantly marketed back then to provide the most chilling experience possible.
I've seen lots of comments at IMDb that "say" the movie isn't scary, but I believe that anyone that can't put them selves in the position those kids are in - that can't feel it - is blocking.

But it is a fairly common inside joke (inside to those interested in classic movies) that in Dana Andrews and Gene Tierney most iconic film, Laura, one could confuse the gender of the leads.
Nothing worse than when, on Drew Carey's show, it was revealed that his full name was Drew Alison Carey - to which Mimi exclaimed "Oh, my God - all three of your names are girls' names".

On another board, there is a discussion about BFI 100 films. And if you disagree with the American critics/views you are toast
I prefer boysenberry more than any ordinary jam.
-
Are you saying that all us Americans have been expressing identical opinions all these years? I somehow missed that.
Haven't you heard? You're all exceptional.

Dennis Weaver in "Duel" (1971), Steven Spielberg's tv-movie.
I always considered him to be much more of a tv actor than a movie actor - even though he did appear in several theatrical films as a supporting player.
-
I'm half Asian and half white so my opinions are all over the place.
You is one crazy mixed-up kid.
-
Thanks CaveGirl. I'm Asian as well so you'll also be hearing opinions from someone who isn't White.
Not White???
Red alert!! Red Alert!! Another race is in the house!!
just kiddin'' - we're all super-cool here.

My beef is people who say they want to see a good movie, and then when they find out it is in black and white are revolted.
I like black and white movies. Wish there were more new ones, though.
Most of the old ones just don't do it for me - not because they're black and white; because they're not convincing. They just sound so fake and stagey.

In this episode of 'The Larry Sanders Show' (titled 'Artie's Gone'), Paula (played by Janeane Garofalo) slips the group Porno for Pyros into the show. I bought their album because of this appearance.

Robert Redford in The Twilight Zone episode "Nothing in the Dark".
He plays an Angel of Death, come to harvest an old woman - and he plays it so Robert Redford-y.
His was a consistent style from very early times. Nice piece of work, this episode.

Never gave a fig about Donny. When he first came to prominence as the little one in the Osmond Brothers when they regularly appeared on 'The Andy Williams Show', I felt even then that he was a little too precious for belief.
Marie, on the other hand......CUTE, CUTE, CUTE!!
What a babe she was as a teen.

No way. There's no chance I could ever pare a list down to 10 (or 15).
As Perry Como might've put it, "it's impossible".
