Things are very complicated now with cable. Embedded record-blocking signals, window-boxing, film ratios - whatever.
I'm a person on a budget. If we were still back in the days when one could try getting the bells and whistles from cable for a month and cancel without incurring all kinds of hook-up costs and equipment fees and contract-break penalties, I'd maybe be willing to give HD a trial run.
But they now want customers to lock into long-term contracts before one even knows if one will be satisfied with the service - and the monthly fee takes a sharp turn upward at 6 months.
So, I've avoided the aggravation. Record from dvd's - and SP cable when the dvd's are not readily available to me.
Simple, affordable - and good enough.

Agreed. It seemed rather convenient that Molly just happened to be working in the same carnival. Although, I can't imagine there'd be too many traveling carnivals moving around the countryside.
I think I would have liked it if the film ended with him having to give his first geek show or something like that--or some type of ending that was truly pitiful--a complete 180 from the beginning of the film.
Like most movies from the studio era, it copped out.

It's kind of hazy, but it might be TRILOGY OF TERROR, if that's the one with Stockard.Channing
Stockard wasn't in that.
'Trilogy of Terror' (1975) is most famous for its third segment, wherein Karen Black engages in a fight for life against a miniature devil doll.

Great post on Nightmare Alley, speedy. I have it on DVD - this is my favorite Power flick. Both he and Joan Blondell hit it out of the park.
I think the "happy" ending weakens it. But it's good up 'til then.

Any older men (bald or not) should ditch the long hair and pony tail. It doesn't make you look younger,it doesn't make you look hip,and it doesn't get you chicks.
Wanna bet?
When I went full-on hippie with the hair, I spent the next 15 years "beating them off with a stick", as the saying goes - and I'm talking about chicks sometimes much younger than myself. And good-looking ones too! The only reason that stopped is because I got tired of the scene in my late 50's.
Even now, every woman my age goes out of their way to be extra agreeable to me. And trust me, I know the difference - I wasn't always so popular.
But - and again, this is important - you have to have good hair. I don't see a whole lot of men over 40 who do.
-
I have the same philosophy. I try to avoid reading reviews of movies I've not yet seen.
Totally. I hate spoilers, first off - and I also hate being told a movie is either great or crappy by someone else if I haven't seen it. All that does is feed into preconceptions. The less I've heard, the better.
So, I watch lots of movies and I trust in the universe that I'll be shown everything I'm intended to see.

Since gays can't reproduce, there seems to be a limit on growth rate.
What makes you think that? Homosexual people have all the parts needed for reproduction. However, the reproduction of people does not explain the increase in homosexuality - it cannot be planned that a new baby will be of the homosexual persuasion, any more than a "straight" baby can be planned. The apparent increase in the numbers probably has more to do with the comfort of "coming out", compared to earlier times. Plus, it's very much in style - especially where it concerns females and bi's.

Yeah, I ain't sure where Lorna's goin' with that statement either, dark.
BUT, recapping what Lorna said here...
Only women are lesbians. So saying an old man wearing earrings looks like an old lesbian is saying he looks like an old woman wearing earrings. Unless she's saying that old lesbians who wear earrings don't look like women, in which case - huh?
Here's ANOTHER thing "men of certain age should never do"... THIS...
...and 'cause if there's ONE THING some old bald dude is blatantly expressing by doing this is to scream out to others the thought, "I'm trying my best to still be HIP"!!!
(...and unfortunately, IT AIN'T WORKIN' FOR YA, DUDE!!!)
My hair is long - rarely put in a pony tail, usually just clumped at the back. When I'm feeling hippie-ish I'll sometimes let it flow free down my back and shoulders. Chicks dig it - always have.
But - and this is important - I have a head full of thick, wavy, dirty-blonde hair (now going white with remnants of the golden) - front, top, and back. No baldness whatsoever. So it always looks awesome. If you ever watched 'Oz', you may recall the long-haired brother of Ryan - he was a brain-damaged boxer. My hair is very similar to that.
If I had any bald spots, I'd probably buzz it.

Changed it. Hate when that happens.

Well, truth be known here dark, when I still lived in SoCal, and the last time I drove through West Hollywood along Santa Monica Blvd, I DIDN'T see a whole lot of the people skipping there EITHER!!!
(...though I DO have to admit it's been a while since I've been to San Francisco, and so I couldn't tell ya the skipping rate among the population there lately)
Well, I'm with you. I think skipping is good exercise - and fun too.
Although last time I tried it, my shoe stuck and I fell flat on my face. I hate being in my sixties. Wish I was still 37.
-
But, but...it was always such good exercise, Rich!!!
I mean, THINK about it here, dude! Why do ya think so many of us straight American guys are so fat and out of SHAPE now days, HUH???
Uh-huh, yep. 'Cause of a lack of EXERCISE!!! Well,THAT of course and a diet high in fat and sugar, and ingesting WAY too many calories each and every day of ALL kinds.
(...and so, maybe just maybe MORE of us straight American guys SHOULD skip around more and LOSE this archaic thought about this, RIGHT?!)

We're gettin' there.
What's the homosexual community up to now - 20, 25 percent of the population?
-
If you think that's bad, just wait till my and younger generations are older...covered in saggy skinned tattoos!!
I still don't understand why Lorna thinks old women with earrings are lesbians.
-
I think I saw Tor skipping down the street once.
Didn't say anything to him, though.

Funny I was just discussing this last night when I jammed with my friend (who happens to be homosexual). He said the use of gay to mean homosexual men in the USA started in the 1930s, mostly in NYC. e.g.. gay bars were meeting places for homosexual men.
Didn't mean that to the rest of us. I blame the media of the late 60's onward for that capitulation.
-
What about the meaning of words that has changed over time i.e. gay.
The misappropriation of that word still bothers me. Before the late 60's, it was very common to hear it in songs - a great word for rhyming. Then we lost it when it was changed to mean men doing men.
I still refuse to use it in a sexual way. When I use it, it means festive, carefree, happy - like it's supposed to.
For the other, I use the word "homosexual".

I very rarely purchase a dvd. But I NEVER download a virtual copy. If it's not a physical disc of a movie in my collection, it's not in my collection.
I do a lot of recording of movies - from TCM, and from discs that I rent, borrow, and even the few I've bought. There are some limitations to be accepted - the soundtrack is monaural, the picture is generally SP quality - sometimes better. Not talking BluRay or anything, but it's all totally acceptable to me. The discs I copy from give me a better visual than the TCM showings, so I try to record only the hardest to find movies from TCM. There's plenty of them, though - I'm busy all the time.

I've read 4 or 5 books about Brando. But I have read his.
-
Why is this site going in reverse? My other forums don't do this, and it confuses me.
Get used to it. TCM is unique in more ways than one.

And yet he still looked bigger and more powerful than his opponent in the one of the great boxing matches in history and against one of the greatest pure boxers in history, Alexis Arguello.
Comparatively. They're were both small in size.
That was the most exciting fight I ever saw. I was with my cousin Donny, who trained at the same gym with Nicky Furlano. Come to think of it, I was with him when I spoke to Pryor as well. Afterward, Donny just looked at me and said "you animal." We said that a lot in those days when one of us would impress the other.

No problem! Your sentiments were well expressed and appreciated. But you could do a whole
'nother thread on people we thought we knew, but really didn't (e.g. O.J. Simpson, Robert Blake). And you could do another one on people whose personal indiscretions caused them to die ugly (e.g. William Holden, David Carradine). Although the book isn't closed on Cosby's life and career yet, it appears -- sadly -- that he's going to be a controversial figure for a long time to come.
For many, yes. But not for me.
I think I kinda knew Blake. Anyone who watched 'The Tonight Show' (and other talk shows) in the 70's knew he was a volatile and haunted personality.
Carradine was still interested in pleasure at the age of 70 something. So what? I can tell you it doesn't get any easier to attain when you start getting up in age.
I just think he was probably drunk at the time, so - whoops.

I think perhaps Christopher Lee's Dracula was a bit more on the megalomaniacal side than the Bela Lugosi version. What do you think?
Well, he is the number 1 vampire in the whole world. Megalomania seems like a natural fit to such a position.
Lugosi couldn't speak English, so his performance is less identifiable that way.

Any movie with both George and Art is a keeper.
-
Jim Carrey has attempted to break away from his madcap persona several times - not with a great deal of success as far as box-office is concerned.
But I credit him for trying. He's a better actor than people give him credit for. 'Man in the Moon', and 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' are both good movies. I also like the dark comedy 'The Cable Guy' as well, and think that's where he began to stretch out as an actor.

If we're speaking about the century from 1900 to 1999, I think 'The Exorcist' would probably win most Critic's Polls.
