"Movie" or "Film" ? What's in a name?
hamradio replied to misswonderly3's topic in General Discussions
I didn't mean that English as a spoken language was bad, only its too quick evolution can be a disadvantage. The older generation simply like to know what the younger generation is saying. :| This blog better covers the point I am getting at. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090906164113AAXPbMY Some people ask me why didn't I took a second language while in high school.? Duh let me learn this one FIRST! -

Welcome to the world of *Synonyms*. The English language is full of it. Its like the word theatre in which we use the words "movie house", cinema, etc. Originally the theatre meant a place where plays were showned before the days of movies. Using words like this is why English is one of the hardest languages for foeigners to learn. Many languages don't use synonyms or antonyms. I rather use synonyms than antonyms because the latter can lead to confusion. I know the Web Admin don't like us to use religion but I hope this can be an exception since the subject is how we use words. Most people don't know that *hell* is an antonymn that has caused confusion for centuries. I bet a lot of people don't know that it once was used instead of *root cellar* in older times. Has different meanings, even a garbage dump where refuse is burned. Here is a website that may be of interest http://www.english-for-students.com/Synonyms.html This site only covers a small percentage of words and don't even include what we are talking about! Welcome to the world of *English*. Our bad. -
CK, I just remembered there is a movie that did stunned me with its ending, "Angels and Demons" (2009). Before I watched the movie for the first time, I got clips and facts from the documentary "Angels and Demons Decoded". I thought Camerlengo Patrick McKenna was the good guy trying to build bridges between the church and science. Boy did I ever came to the wrong conclusion. In that respect you can say "Angels and Demons" was a bit of a shocker. Was a *much better* movie than "The Da Vinci Code" (2006) which was full of rubbage. In that one Dan Brown in his novel came to the wrong conclusion BIG TIME!! Dan Brown needs a crash course in the true meaning of *love and lust* and the differences between them!

I want to wish Zsa Zsa Gabor a speedy recovery following her hip surgery. What I can find out she is still in critical condition. Surgery like this on people of this age can be life threatening. She looks *great* to be 93 ! Latest info http://www.examiner.com/x-24089-TV-Examiner~y2010m7d26-Zsa-Zsa-Gabor-Health-update-TV-credits-interesting-facts-quotes

Why are TCM programmers so lacking in basic intuition?

An oppressive summer movies "Predator" (1987) I think it was 125 in the shade. "Picnic" (1955) "Baby Doll" (1956) "The Long Hot Summer" (1958) Is it ever. For anything hotter watch this:http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/series/naked-science/4465/Overview (watched it last night). Just hope this thread doesn't get *heated!* -
"My Fifteen Minutes" by Sybil Jason would make an interesting movie. Some of the stories is quite enlightening. What Humphrey Bogard did to force filming to stop! My my, that would give the movie an NC-17 rating.

Why is the broadcast Quality of some films so poor?
hamradio replied to cobraii's topic in General Discussions
I was thinking the same thing while watching "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" (1923) this past Sunday. I couldn't beleive the poor quality of some of the scenes and knowing this movie was released with a new music score around 2006. Has a lot of scratches and dirt. It needs restoring bad. Is this the best print period? If it is, its a shame. -
It is only a shock to the fans of Cukor and Whale if they think their idols "walk on water". I myself never think of *any* director, producer or actor as such. When I first asked the question, I was only concerned was the move "Gods and Monsters" accurate or not. In other words could some of it been fabricated, overexagerated, embellished or such. The fact now that I know the truth only set the story staright with these guys. Overall it does not matter if these people are straight or gay, as long as they make good movies, that's all that counts. Another example is the movie "Mommie Dearest" that portrayed a dark side of Joan Crawford. Yes it might have been a shock to her die hard fans that she was this mean to her adopted daughter Christina but it all boiled down to how accurate was it. The movie ended with the suggestion that Joan had the last word with her death and the reading of the will but Christina simple said "well does she?". We can not listen to her younger siblings that states that Joan was not the monster as portrayed in the movie but what do they know. They wasn't even born or were too young to state such a fact at the time the events in the movie unfolded. The *real* truth is still up in the air. But does this change the fact, do I still like Joan Crawford movies, no it changes nothing. I still like her movies, her acting abilities is all that matters. The problem with dealing with people that are deceased is that they can never have the final say or be able to defend themselves. This is why I have to be a little carefull when watching these "tell all" type of movies. Edited by: hamradio on Jul 22, 2010 12:29 PM

Mentioning Robert Blake reminds me of his old "Baretta" charactor in which he always coin the phrase *if you can't do the time, don't do the crime.* I bet it takes strong will power for some NOT to throw a bottle or brick at the TV whenever we hear him saying that today. If you can't do the time don't........

One need only listen to Lindsay's father to figure out why she's a spoiled brat. Our grandparents were right in using the expression "spare the rod, you're spoil the child". For the past 20 or so years all I've heard was using pshycology and "time outs" in dealing with our children. Well we can see how this panned out. Worked well didn't it!! That's why lot of our kids are on Ritalin and use drugs later on to manage their lives. When is society going to wake up and see how present methods are *not* working. Bring back the paddle closet and woodshed, you can toss those drugs down the toilet. Corporal punishment IS NOT child abuse for crying out loud. When did this insanity started? I thank my parents strong zero tolerance to bad behaviour the reason why I don't use alcohol and drugs to deal with what life throws me and to date had NO run ins with the law. How many people do you know in their mid 50's don't even have so much as a traffic ticket. I live in a place where if Lindsay Lohan show disrespect to the judge like she did a week ago, she would be in jail so fast for contempt of court, her empty head would spin. Thank you mom and dad. If my statement offends any liberals then TOUGH!!

"Little Orphan Annie" (1938) where did this movie come from? I did several Google searches before and the only thing that ever came up was the shorter version starring Mitzi Green in 1932. Was this a lost movie that was recently found? So far I can't find any video release. This came out of nowhere!! I found a photo of her as Annie, I don't know if its part of the movie or the off camera filming stage. TCM needs to show this version. I found a poster but I'm not going through the motions to post it, I know its protected.

For $30 to $70 dollars? NO!! I work too hard for my money. Surprised you haven't done a thread about "Tron Legacy" (2010). Money will be better spent. Looking foward to this one. -
Its a shame those poor girls had trouble getting married. It sounds more like sexism in which the more famous twins Chang and Eng Bunker had no trouble at all getting married. To top it off their wives were sisters themselves. Leaves one to wonder how these 2 men got so easily married a hundred years earlier in a time period that had ever stricter "morals". Their story http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chang_and_Eng_Bunker
