The schedule of June 11th finally revealed - Jacques Cousteau Day
hamradio replied to JonasEB's topic in General Discussions
National Geographic doesn't have the atmosphere it had back in the 1960's. Those NG specials were very educational and the short theme music during the title opening is very memerable. I use to watch "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" and other NG specials when I was young. I don't see any harm in TCM playing a little tribute to a great man who open our eyes to the mysteries of the deep. The UWJC is a *classic.* One great movie is "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" that gave people a vision of things to come. Many of the stuff in the movie that was once sci fi has now come true. Jules Verne would have treated Jacques Cousteau as a hero to mankind. http://www.myhero.com/go/hero.asp?hero=cousteau -

The schedule of June 11th finally revealed - Jacques Cousteau Day
hamradio replied to JonasEB's topic in General Discussions
Sort of fortuante Cousteau is not here to *see that!* I think "Top Kill" has a differnet meaning. -
I was very young at the time but I barely remembered "Cheyenne" when it was on TV. The theme I really remebered from the same time period that was also a western was "Rawhide". I have several TV themes and back during the 1970's a bought a few records that was from K-tel, one of them was "20 Great TV Themes" (photo below). It has selections, like "Hawaii Five-O" and "Kojak". I have some TV series Viewmaster reels, one of them is formentioned "Hawaii Five-O" Like to add a have acquired a couple of the rare "Hawaniian Eye" episodes, it also has a nice theme song by Jerry Livingston and Mack David.

TCMWeb Admin, please delete this thread, I accidently made a duplicate "Amityville Horror". That was too fast in Hot Topics, I just heard about it on NBC4 News New York @11:00PM Edited by: hamradio on May 26, 2010 12:02 AM

Kevin Costner says he and his brother can clean up oil spill
hamradio replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
Everyone, has anyone been watching the news? Neither BP or the US government is doing jack squat and anything now is too little, too late for the people of Lousiana (poor fishermen). That thing in the back of the truck looks like a portable moonshine still Something newsworthy http://www.dailycomet.com/article/20100525/ARTICLES/100529628/1292?Title=Memorial-to-honor-victims-of-oil-rig-explosion *BP we could use some Dawn dishwashing liquid!* -
Long thought lost "Helen's Babies" finally released.
hamradio replied to hamradio's topic in General Discussions
Thanks for this revalation. Whoever had the video copy kept it to themselves. I've searched high and low on the internet for the past 5 years and NO ONE had it. IMDB even had no references to it ever being released. Grapevine Video had to my knowledge the only surviving Baby Peggy films and even they couldn't obtain "Helen's Babies". I was told the videos they had were the only known surviving films, "Captain January", "Family Secret" and "April Fool" (she had only a small role in it) and 90% of everything else was considered lost. It was rumored during the past couple of years that someone was restoring it but passed on but I couldn't get any info. If this film wasn't lost like you stated, then it was kept out of sight - way out of sight! You are very lucky if you saw a theatrical print, where did they got it? The video I have has a "Videobrary ®" watermark in the bottom right corner. Do you know of any other of her survivng films? Could there be a chance that the other Clara Bow films i.e."The Keeper of the Bees" be out there and no one is sharing? -
A long since thought lost silent starring the child actress Baby Peggy (Peggy Montgomery) "Helen's Babies" (1924) has been released to public domain. I just got a copy and its in fairly good shape and I think its all intact along with the nitrate decomp. The movie also stars the famous silent actress Clara Bow. This shows that movies that are thought forever lost, do once in a blue moon pop up. This must have been in the hands of a collector - thank goodness. It has an organ score. Can TCM show public domain movies? If its possible, it would make a nice "Silent Sunday Night" feature.

A Threat To Movie Legacies As Serious As Pan-And-Scan
hamradio replied to dialoguy's topic in General Discussions
It is no threat at all, just set your TV to the proper aspect! This info should help you. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-5VCZP13ukc8/learn/learningcenter/home/aspect_ratio.html By the way to avoid burn-in with the black bars keep the brightness down. I have never lost a TV or computer monitor in my life due to burn-in. -

Kevin Costner says he and his brother can clean up oil spill
hamradio replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
I am completely floored by this disaster. I always thought they had the "capping technology" to employ just in case such an event happened. Apparnetly not!! All I can say is that the US should BAN anymore offshore drilling until such a technology is developed! You will see how fast the oil companies get their butts moving! Funny, they can stop all those badly damaged oil wells in Kuwait during the Gulf War and put a spacecraft into orbit around Saturn but they can't plug a single pipe. Unbeleivable. About cleaning up some of the mess, give the BP executives a truck load of Sham-wows and say get to work. Oh by the way, give Costner an acting gig, he has too much time on his hands playing in the bathtub with an oily rubber duck. -

Question: Viewing classic movies on HDTV?
hamradio replied to rover27's topic in General Discussions
Yes, to see the 4:3 aspect you will have the black bars at the side. I work at a place where they have a HDTV hooked up to standard cable and they keep it on the 16:9 setting and it makes everyone looks fat! (and everything else out of proportion). I have a color bar dot generator and I use it to demonstrate to some how the normal cross hatch looks on a standard TV and when I hook it up to a hi def TV, its shows how stretched out the picture is. Some I showed still don't get it. Each aspect has to be properly set for proper viewing. If one would to hook up a color bar generator and set it to cross hatch, the *normal* appearance for the 4:3 setting should look like this on *any* TV set. It will have to be connected to the composite in or the video in. They don't support HDMI. I hope this helps. -
Race and Hollywood - Native Americans
hamradio replied to JackFavell's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Have you seen the movie "Apocalypco"? It portrayed how savage the Mayan's were toward their own people (mainly toward other tribes). It was very gory. The part that amused me was when the Mayan warrior rename his captured victim Jaguar Paw, *Almost.* When they got to the scene where Jaguar Paw's (Almost) wife gave birth while in the rain filled hole, I thought I name the baby *Almost Drowned.* -

This thread is a little heated, so I thought I add a little humor. Now *this* is last of the *Mohicans!* http://cgi.ebay.com/HEATHKIT-MOHICAN-BOX-SHORTWAVE-RADIO-UNBUILT-/250629434047?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Shortwave_Radios&hash=item3a5aadaabf Can't wait for the *Mohawk* and *Apache* (RX-1 and TX-1) -
A rogue satellite might disrupt cable services for some around May 23rd. Who didn't see this coming! The story here. http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20004772-17.html Comcast is mum on the subject, DUH!? :|

What cinema history would it have been if Gene Kelly starred in a psychopathic musical. I can just hear him singing "I'm Slashing in the Rain".

The fact Deanna Durbin retired because she got fed up with Hollywood, doesn't mean she wasted her life. People try to get her to talk and as she plainly stated in her last interview, she wants to be left alone. I respect her wishes and admire her convictions in not to be forced to explain her reasons for which it is a *personal* matter. Hollywood to her is not all that!
