Jake,. I've heard that in old Hollywood, they sometimes don't even tell them that they are fired. The poor actors find out they are out of work when they are simply locked out of the studio and can't get past the front gate. That is cruel beyond belief how some studios treat people.

I just came across this article about Shirley, just learned that her husband passed on a few years ago. Very sad to hear that. Its a miracle that Graham Greene had not been lynched by an angry mob. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-560626/Shirley-Temple-superstar-childhood-destroyed-Hollywood.html I know John Agar would have been if they found out that he punched out a pregnant Shirley - that's from the book "Shirley Temple - American Princess". It was quoted in the book, she never saw the fist coming. Wonder how many John Agar fans will there be after reading this?

Shirley Temple lost virtually most of her childhood income due to her father, George Temple taking the advice of his finacial lawyer not the report certain amounts paid as income. The IRS got wind of this and the rest is history. William Shakespeare was right on the money (Henry VI - Part 2) Like to add that many early child stars saw very little of what they earned due to greedy parents. Some very sad stories out there.

MovieProfesser wrote: << At the end of the film appeared: ?To Be Continued.? Well, something went terribly wrong and the series was never rejuvenated. >> Don't you hate when *that* happens. A similair thing happened with the series "Crusade". It ended suddenly without proper conclusion. Maybe (Andy Hardy) is something as simple as Louie B. Mayer forgot to remind himself.

50th Anniversary of the Korean War on TCM?!
hamradio replied to sweetsmellofsuccess's topic in General Discussions
Lol, 50 years later some idiot in North Korea forgot to rebuild the power station. -
The are some interesting DVD's I've seen advertised on TV called " Nazis: A Warning From History" from Time-Life. I like to see it but I don't want to shell out $40.00 of my hard earn money, I don't pay that amount nowadays for regular movies. I'm hoping after sales drop, they will be aired.

The Nazi's were deep into the occult as I learned on the History Channel. Why would using horoscopes be strange, especially today when its too common of a practice used by a great deal of normal people. (beginning to wonder what normal is??) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Socialism_and_Occultism About Rommel wearing a leather jacket in the desert? Yep! The movie "Hitler" had some inaccuracies. First off since when did the Germans used wall maps printed in English? They show people involved in the Valkyrie Conspiracy being hanged including Stauffenberg! We all know Stauffenberg along with a few others were shot by firing squad. Many of the rest were not simply hanged but were *very slowly* strangled by piano wire from meat hooks. Hitler enjoyed watching their suffering. The movie didn't show Hitler and Eva's suicide which would have been very important at the end. This movie left too much out and went by too swiftly. Had some stuff I don't know where the producers got it from.

It was a simple point that anyone who tries to kill Hitler can't be all bad. Rommel was a tank commander and didn't care for politics. Like Claus von Stauffenberg these people didn't commit the horrible war crimes like the die hard Nazi fanatics did. A good example of a person that carried the Nazi card but didn't care much about their politics was Werner von Braun. One was required to join the party if anyone expect to get anywhere in life there By the way I'm watching "Hitler" right now and I think Richard Basehart is the most laughable Hitler I've ever seen. Lol. He's better off under the ocean.

If Hollywood makes a movie about the Somali pirates, will this be Liz last casting call?
-
The channels I mostly watch is History, History International, Science Channel, and TCM. There is a little G4, Comedy and AMC. Once in a blue moon I watch Starz/Encore, PPV, and IFC. Recent documentaries are becoming pretty good i.e "When Yellowstone Erupts" "Stealing Lincoln's Body", "Full Metal Corset" and now "America, A Story of Us". TCM is my main choice for classics because they are shown unedited. I buy very few movies, something like 2 a year The only networks I watch is CBS and NBC mainly for CSI and Jay Leno. Even though I get local news, I sometimes watch the Los Angeles / New York feeds. NBC New York being the best This thread got me to thinking about R. Lee Ermey, he's great on *both* the big screen and History.

Between overpaid actors and over priced movie productions is the reason why tickets are so high and theatres are barely making a profit. My local downtown theatre closed its doors because of this. At the time the price for an adult ticket was $4.50 Hollywood is like any other big corporation, money talks. Having Elizabeth Taylor get such a role as a nagging mother in law in "The Flintstones" was a bit of poetic justice. When I saw that, I said to my self, oh how the great has fallen. Wonder was this Hollywood's way of telling Liz shes a dinosaur? Lol.

Playboy's Hugh Hefner helps rescue Hollywood sign

About the comment, << I'm from the generation that still remembers having an antenna on the roof and 'free TV'. How did we get here ?? LOL !! >> That also had problems like the dreaded TVI (television interfernce) from radio transmitters. I still remember when many people during the 1960's - 70's wanted the TVI offenders to be "subjected" to captial punishment. *Die CBer Die!*

1931 ?Dracula? now has a new music track...
hamradio replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
The fact "Dracula" had no music score, made this film unique in that it was made within a very small time frame between silent and the first generation sound on film which was Western Electric. I like to hear the slight hiss and most of the time low volume of the variable density soundtrack because this shows the limitations of the technology during this time period. This period is just as important as the silent and Vitaphone eras. Adding such material is a bit of artistic vandalism and should be left as is. How can future generations learned about the advancement of sound during the 20th century? Whats next, having "Frankenstein" (1931) redubbed with hip hop? -
Welcome to the Boards. The movie "We Are Marshall" (2006) was filmed on location in Huntington, West Virginia which is a few miles from where I live. If you pick up WSAZ, you might remember that they kept us informed during production and about having people to come out to serve as extras during some of the filming.

"That Hagen Girl" became a legendary flop, and at the time derided by critics for its tasteless script, miscasting and laughable performances. Casting Shirley into such roles like a femme fatale type or a Betty Grable would not have worked. She is a victim of her early success and that childhood image is burned into our minds. Its like the actor Max Baer who try as he might, shake the Jethro Bodine charactor and do serious acting. No one couldn't see him in any other light.

Robert Downey Jr. to star in 'Wizard of Oz?'. WHAT! LOL!

CK, if you think things can't get any worst, "The A-Team" will be released this summer! I wonder if its possible to let out a scream that would match the decibel reading of the 1883 Krakatoa eruption? -
TCM's birthday tribute to Eddie Albert - 4/22
hamradio replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in General Discussions
The last movie I'd seen him in was "Take This Job and Shove it" (1981). His role was minor, playing Samuel Ellison. He definitley made the ending, lol. Don't a lot of us wish we could do that. -
-10 in the freezer is great, I can only get mine to -1. I always keep mine maxed out. Lol, we could use TCM fix-it type of movies, how the repair stuff the old fashion way. Saying that, this reminds me of "Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House" with Cary Grant. Love that tip in the movie of using an empty picture frame and a carpenters level to see if a house is level or not.

Auturo wrote: << along with pre-stardom shorts like the Baby Burlesks >> I think her best pre-stardom movies are the "Frolics of Youth" shorts. There is one Baby Burlesk short TCM better not touch with a 100 foot pole - "Kid in Africa". Very offensive by today's standards. Shirley once commented she regreted being in that one. I like to add that her best video releases were back in 1988 on the Playhouse Vdeo (division of CBS/FOX). They were mastered from *new* B&W negatives and were in HiFi stereo. Sound was pretty amazing. Picture quality is razor sharp.

Could this be the end of James Bond?
hamradio replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in General Discussions
I think it is finally time. His charactor was born out of the Cold War and is approaching 50 shows that James Bond has reach a point in time that even good things must finally end. I rather he retire now gracefully instead of ending with a couple of flops. Wonder will they have him at the end of his last movie retiring to a tropical island or be killed off in a blaze of glory? When his first movies came out, the toy industry capatalized on it Even had some secret agent knockoffs. Remembered the commercials back then. http://www.loti.com/secret_sam.htm
