  2. JarrodMcDonald wrote: << Great question. The original Lassie, named Pal >> Was the reason the name was changed from Pal to Lassie due to copyright infringement? During the same time period, the Famous Studios (later became Harveytoon) had a dog charactor named Pal which appeared in the old Little Audrey shorts. http://www.puppyfinder.com/names.php?startby=p I use to watch Lassie a lot during the 1960's, I still like the old Lassie and Timmy series better. Lol, I have a couple of ViewMaster reels of Lassie.
  3. Fred, I beleive the United Nations can use your translating skills. (as well as this board)
  4. After drinking Granny's tonic, he does the Tarzan yell better.
  5. I beleive what he wants is TCM to do a tribute to German films. Sounds like a good idea. I missed the German version of "Titanic" a couple of years back and I like TCM to reshow it. The best German made film I've seen so far is "Das Boot". Had to brew some coffee for that one (approx 5 hours). Here is a list of German movies, a lot during the 1930's and 40's. http://www.germanvideo.com/60_years/60_years_main.html Any suggestions? One movie I noticed was way ahead of its time "Anders als du und ich" 1957, German language, ca. 90 min., b&w, drama - Director: Veit Harlan. Cast: Christian Wolf, Paula Wessely, Paul Dahlke. Plot: Dramatic account of one family's struggle to prevent their son's homosexuality. Can the love of a girl and the support of his parents save him? A Veit Harlan Film about a timely problem. Remember this is *1957* a time in which the subject was taboo in this country. Even the movie "The Childrens Hour" was a bit controversal in 1961 even though the producer treaded very carefully.
  6. Give thanks you don't live in the UK. I always had TCM since its conception and love the commercial free aspect of it - at the beginning a nice surprise. I use to get FMC but a few years back it was dropped due to the realignment of what one gets with what package. Just thinking, should we all by now have a library's worth of TCM movies by now? I know a couple of members here have! I don't mind on other channels commercials as much as movies that are edited to death. Love the fact now that on my DVD recorder, if I use DVD-RAM I can simply add chapters to the commercials and then simply delete them. Much easier then the old way of hitting at the right time during recording. Lets hope TCM stay commercial free for decades to come.
  7. Imagine how *angry* these people must have been. Thank god for air conditioning! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20060729145503AAwIeEX
  8. James Cagney. Like the photo, he hasn't changed much. I can't find any childhood or baby photos of him on the internet. Maybe some other Cagney fan might have one to share.
  9. The first-ever TCM Classic Film Festival will take place April 22-25, 2010, in the heart of Hollywood. Here is a list of some recently restored films that are coming up. http://news.turner.com/article_display.cfm?article_id=5023 (If link doesn't load, cut and paste to the address bar). Just for fun, I try to find out how many feature length films have been made in the US / Hollywood so far and beleive it ot not I can not find an answer. This doesn't include the ones made in the UK, Australia, etc. Does *anyone* knows. If an answer can be found then ask how many of those needs to be restored either because of nitrate decomp or color fading? The answer may boggle the mind. This question doesn't even cover short subjects! Universal is not the only studio out there and other studio films are just as important. Edited by: hamradio on Mar 22, 2010 9:40 PM
  10. I beleive there was a thread a couple of years back on the subject in that TCM in itself does not restore films. Wiki has some info on the subject. I was horrified to find out on the Wiki site that some studios actually *junked* a lot of their films!! (adding insult to injury!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film_preservation To cover can TCM show them I myself just learned a lot from this link, http://fan.tcm.com/_Why-TCM-Cant-Show-Everything/blog/346269/66470.html I like to add that a company called Grapevine tries to *preserve* a handful of movies, not actual restoration. In my book this last ditch effort to preserve what's left is better then nothing. My hats off to the guy running Grapevine. I once previously commented that Grapevine got to the movie "The Bluebird" (1917) in just the nick of time!! That movie would now be forever lost if it wasn't for them. To date this is the worst I have seen a film far as degregation goes. Warner Brothers have manage to salvage and restore several Vitaphone shorts, they are on the 3 disc "Jazz Singer" DVD set. Bad news is that approx 78% of all movies made from 1900 - 1940 are considered lost forever! Edited by: hamradio on Mar 22, 2010 10:57 AM
  11. Just consider those films in a deep sleep for the moment. Only films that are forever *lost* are in the graveyard but the ones listed will wind up in the graveyard if somethings not done soon. Some Universal films were cremated in the studio fire recently. Speaking of *Universal Graveyard..* http://www.undercovertourist.com/united-states/florida/orlando/attractions/universal-studios-florida_beetlejuice-s-rock-n-roll-graveyard-revue.html Edited by: hamradio on Mar 21, 2010 9:55 PM
  12. Humor, I wonder did the "12 Angry Men" found the "Five Angry Women" (1974) guilty? Combine the 2 movies for a revenge tale?
  13. Here is a site that has some interesting info. Has a family photo with their father and mother. Shows a photo of Gummo Marx. http://celluloidheroes.wordpress.com/2009/10/18/the-marx-brothers-photo-op/ Just learned that Harpo was an early version of Carrot Top. Is that even possible?
  14. The million dollar question I always asked myself is, was Rodney King in the back of the minds of the OJ jurors? In other words, lets acquit to prevent a riot. I still remember the cheering out on the streets after OJ's acquittal on the news. Wonder if those same people are now asking themselves what was I thinking! Here is a study about juror empathy. http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/118908562/abstract?CRETRY=1&SRETRY=0 If you get a cookie error, here is the result of the study ABSTRACT White university students participated in a study to investigate the impact of defendant race and empathetic induction on a subsequent juror decision-making task. Participants read a passage involving a Black or a White defendant in a criminal case. They were subsequently induced to feel no empathy, low empathy, or high empathy for the defendant. When compared to participants in the low- and control empathy conditions, those in the high-empathy condition reported greater target empathy, made attributions that were more situational, and assigned more lenient punishments. The results also indicate that group membership can moderate the impact of empathetic induction. When compared to the participants in the Black defendant condition, those in the White defendant condition reported greater target empathy, made attributions that were more situational, and assigned more lenient punishments. Implications for both empathy and judicial decision-making research are discussed. Edited by: hamradio on Mar 20, 2010 11:40 PM
  15. Thanks to your reply, it never occured to me to think of The Marx Brothers that far back. Here is a very early photo of them. Never seen them this young and as they really are, lol!

  17. The 3 Stooges started their act in 1925. The Bowery Boys in 1946 which was a revamping of "The East Side Kids". A salary dispute between Leo Gorcey and Sam Katzman started the whole thing off.
  18. I beleive the purpose of the movie is to show the rest of us, who has never served on a jury what's involved and what's at stake in a murder trail in which you *have to be certain!* We can look at recent murder cases that has been overturned or throwned out due to the littlest piece of evidence that suddenly sprang up - something that was a life or death decision. I personally don't like having someones elses life in my hands for the reason being, what if I'm *wrong?* I need the burdon of proof and if I have any doubt, I have to vote *not guilty.* At the time this movie was made, the law didn't have the technology i.e. DNA like we have today.to make the jurys job a little easier. beyond a reasonable doubt definition.. adj. part of jury instructions in all criminal trials, in which the jurors are told that they can only find the defendant guilty if they are convinced "beyond a reason- able doubt" of his or her guilt. Sometimes referred to as "to a moral certainty," the phrase is fraught with uncertainty as to meaning, but try: "you better be damned sure." By comparison it is meant to be a tougher standard than "preponderance of the evidence," used as a test to give judgment to a plaintiff in a civil (non-criminal) case. The price we have to pay in this country is that several "guilty" people have to walk in order for one innocent person not to be unjustly imprisoned or worst, face the death penalty. Not so easy is it? :| Another thing is that there will always be a bit of unfairness because, lets say that a poor person is put on trail with a public defender who don't have the time or resources that a rich persons high profile EXPENSIVE lawyer has in presenting evidence that usually does swing a jury into deciding guilt or not guilty.
  19. Did anyone noticed in the movie "Back to the Future", when Marty burst into the soda shop, the jukebox was playing "The Ballard of Davy Crockett" and the boy at the dinner table wearing the coonskin cap?
  20. Here is a gambling website that has their top 10 movie picks about gambling. not a bad list at that. http://www.777.com/articles/top-10-gambling-and-poker-movies Speaking of Las Vegas and gambling, they are doing the biggest gamble of all time called the "City Center" project. Never heard about this until last night on "Build it Bigger". This I beleive is the *fastest* project ever done, mind breaking speed. They should had these guys been in charge of *Ground Zero.*. Fred your timing for this thread could not have been more PERFECT! *Unbeleivable !! * I watch CSI and in early episodes you can see the "Wynn" under construction.
  21. Just to think I thought "Hot Tub Time Machine" was the dumbest thing to come out of 2010. I'm going to calm my nerves and watch them on NGC build a Murcielago SV Lamborghini. (I can always dream).
  22. I'm sad to hear that, the man Davy Crockett he portrayed was a person that would have laughed at the "Survivor" series. He (Davy) was a hunter as well!! Oh yeah, once again I can hear the gnashing of teeth (referring to this forum - ha ha) Fess Parker rocks!! RIP *Davy Crockett*
  23. I think somebody in Hollywood is high on crystal meth! I can just hear the gnashing of teeth (referring to film critics). Besides the History Channel's "Monsterquest" already beat them to it, referring to the piranha episode I just saw the other night. My goodness just think these fish (even though a very few in numbers) are being caught in our rivers makes the Hollywoods sci fi portrayal of "Piranha's" a mute point. Yeh I know, these fish can't survive in our climate. Didn't they also said the same thing about the Africanized *Killer Bees??* "Piranha" got me to thinking, will they remake this in 3D? (RIP Jim Varney, LOL)
  24. I beleive you came to the same point I try to make in the past that 3D doesn't make a film great or improve a "bad" film. Hollywood needs to do one simple thing, hire screen writers and producers that has imagination, something that seems to be lost today. Stop rehashing the same ole, same ole stuff. Yes there are a few films that does need a remake, especially the poorly made ones. One nice example is the remake of "Clash of the Titans" which was in much need of a remake *minus the 3D* due to the laughable special effects of the last one. Love (if thats the right word) the new Medusa. and the Kraken. The last Kraken (80's version) looked like something out one of those 1950's B flick films. There are people who will think this movie sucks also who's opinion I respect.
