A few modern day movies could have used a *shorter* running time.
"The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring" was 2 hours 58 min.
"King Kong" (2005) was 3 hours 7 min.
"Little Dorrit" about 5 hours!!

A recent nice example is "Kate and Leopold" (2001). Had the twist at the end of a modern day working woman that wanted to go to the 19th century. Story didn't told what she was in for, still wondering how she faired. :|
There was a very small nude scene in the 1997 "Titanic" and it was Kate Winslet's first.. Very tame compared to what she did later.

By the way about losing the FMC channel, the same thing happen to me a few years back. Directv gave me a discount for 3 months to compensate

You are right about that. I am a big fan of the "Babylon 5" series and to be certain, I pulled out of couple of tapes of people wearing space suits. None of them looks like the one in the 2001 movies.
Valentine might be thinking about the similiar *shape* of the visor worn by Bruce Boxleitner in "Babylon V - Third Space" and one other episode of the series when he took a space walk outside the space station but the similarity ends there. These are rare scenes that shows anyone in full suit!
The Star Fury fighter pilots wore large round helmets. Everything in the Babylon 5 series is very unique. I hated when they ended it because of a silly squabble, the producer didn't want the Babylon 5 spinoffs to be a "Baywatch in space" type of movie.
You will see the similiar design in the Star Trek "Enteprise" series. http://www.propstore.com/joleneblalock.htm
*2001* Is that a Darth Vader life support system, lol? ( just joking about the control panel)

I wish TCM reshow the German version of "Titanic", I missed it. Like to see their take on the disaster (who to blame).
Trivia: Notice the guy who played John Jacob Astor? He's played by Eric Braedon, who is the ruthless billionaire in CBS's "The Young and the Restless". If they kept his Y&R charactor in "Titanic", he would have bought the ship, placed it in the backyard swimming pool and fired Bruce Ismay. Used the iceberg for chilling champange.

The movie "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" used a couple of sets from "Hello Dolly".
Interestingly, the producers of "2001, a Space Odyssey" had all the little spaceships, props, etc. destroyed after production. I guess they wanted their designs to stay theirs.
As far as owning those movie sets, people love those Christie's auctions when it come to owning a piece of Hollywood history. An example was the recent selloff of the "Star Trek" movie props, clothes, etc. I think the Enterprise from Star Trek TNG went for about $750,000 dollars. *Who says the economy is bad??*
Wonder does the buyer still lives in the basement of his parents house?

gagman66, in my town being SILENT or sometimes simply old is the only reason why people don't like these types of movies. You have no idea how narrow minded the people I work with are. I remembered a couple of years back, one of the girls wanted a nice kids movie, very clean cut, something Rated G.
I told her about the movie "The Ragman" and said how great this Jackie Coogan movie is. She is so ignorant - she said, silent?? is that those old movies where people walk and run fast? My goodness how stupid is that, I said to myself. Talk about judging something before even giving it a try!
I beleive I am the *only* person who works there that watches TCM. Most of the people there buy movies no older then 10 years old.
I remembered also that a few people who worked in preserving out towns history got a cold shoulder when they wanted some old films made in my town between the 1920's to the 1940's saved. Our local town hall said no, they were not going to spend money on something like that. Goodbye history. My town is a piece or work.
My feeling is *it's their lost!*

People's negativity towards it is the same reason for *any* of the types of movies made during the same era, its SILENT!! They can't accept it for the good story telling these movies made before sound. Its no different than how people treat SD television or AM/FM radio.
I myself have it on video as well as the older shorter made silent. I recently did a thread on it, thought I lost it. http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?messageID=8333013
Thanks TCM for showing these silent movies. I don't think anyone else is.

What this classic kitty is doing is rare though.

Read this story below about "Avatar" and tell me are we getting a bit too over sensitive on racism, I mean c'mon, I guess we shouldn't be bigoted against the "Predator" race either. I'll watch my step in the future and don't call them crab-face. Is Dr McCoy a racist because he calls Spock "a green blooded vulcan"? Or do we just laugh?
I like Denzel Washington and Will Smith because they are great actors. Race is not a factor. "The Book of Eli" is no exception. I wouldn't even had paid any attention if someone didn't brought it up.

People really needs to worry about stuff that is of greater concern at the moment. Earthquake refugees maybe?

The fact that "Up" is nominated confirms your suspicion that they are a joke.
To the original post about "The Swarm". It needs to be renominated for a movie that predicts prophecy. I learned from the History Channel last night the Africanized killer bees are *adapting* to the cold and are heading north and west. They are becoming more aggressive as well.
"The Swarm" is becoming one of those "Things to Come" type of movie.

That tells me the copy protection *might* be embedded in the VBI (vertical blanking interval). This is also where the closed captioned information is transmitted. The old Teletext was sent there also. The picture coming from the VHS is analog in nature.
I'm glad you found this out, you are the first to report this. Very unexpected.
The reason why I said *might* is because HDTV digital transmission is different from the analog medium which I read has a shorter VBI.

Well at least you have a VHS copy of the movie. As I stated before VHS is better then *nothing!*

Now how about a movie who's *title* couldn't be better named for this thread.
*Up in Smoke*

We should have dropped cigarettes on the Germans instead of propaganda leafletts.

I hope Warner Brothers didn't follow suit like Disney did in editing. By the way I added
Edward G. Robinson to my previous post, thanks for reminding me (in a way)

HG, I can't associate "The Wolfman" with the Holocaust. The Jews were hunted down and killed due to *hatred!*. In the movie "The Wolfman" is hunted down because he became a beast and killed during the full moon. Very strange parallel Curt Siodmak made.
I will keep the two seperate with better respect to what happened in Europe.

*Well for humor* WC Fields

*For wit* George Burns

*For war* Gregory Peck

*For gangster movies* Edward G. Robinson

That poor kid, TV's on the fritz. Now that's an addiction! Worst still is that the repairman is in bed with Swine flu.
-
This is why I am no hurry to switch over to HD. There might be a solution if you don't mind a slight downgrade. Record what you think is "copy once" only movies to VHS then make your DVD copies from the tape. Its better than nothing.

The B movie cowboy actor Allan Rocky Lane was the voice of Mister Ed.
He would make a great choice for a TCM cowboy / western marathon. (Allan Rocky Lane night anyone?)

Considering the older classic pirate movies were under 2 hours i.e. "Captain Blood" (1935) starring Errol Flynn., 119 min., "Captain Kidd", 83 min.and "Blackbeard" 99 min.
Blow me down TCM how about a tribute to those.
