  1. TCM is presenting "Wargames" tonight and I thought everyone would like some computer trivia. The computer Matthew Broderick is using is an IMSAI 8080 computer. Regardless of what you have heard, the IBM XT computer was not the first home computer but the Altair and the IMSAI were some of the earliest. The CPU is an Intel 8080 not to be confused with the 8088 which the first IBM XT's used. An IBM XT is shown at the very end of "Stand By Me" - the one Richard Dreyfuss is typing his story on. You want to talk about *slow*, notice the computers refresh rate while only in text or very primitive graphics. Its no joke. Back then 64K of memory was top notch. Have we ever come far. Has any of you ever owned one? The Color Computer was my first computer. Here is a couple of links about the system Enjoy going down memory lane. http://starringthecomputer.com/computer.php?c=10 http://www.wired.com/entertainment/hollywood/magazine/16-08/ff_wargames By the way I have a Color Computer Speech Sound Cartridge Model No. 26-3144A and it sounds *exactly* like the "Colossus" speech hardware. I couldn't beleive it when I first heard it - eerie! (Referring to "Colossus, the Forbin Project" 1970) Message was edited by: hamradio
  2. Here is something thats really "out there". Ha-ha-ha-HAA-ha!. http://www.bcdb.com/cartoon/2802-Maw_And_Paw.html
  3. Couldn't the photographer waited until the guy finished sweeping the sidewalk? I love how the large white air conditioning unit gives the cafe that old 1950's Paris lifestyle look. The lady carrying the animal carrier must didn't see the sign on the door -- "La Dolce Vita" theres a movie TCM haven't shown yet (or have they???)
  4. I bought the 2 disc LP "Grease" soundtrack back in 1979. The LP jacket folds out with photos from the movie. The record sleeves have the complete list of songs plus ALL the music info. It even tells you about the musicians and who were the background vocals. LP's (and Laserdisc) were always neat of having this foldout option. Most of my selections are on Side 1 - Grease, Summer Nights and You're the One That I Want. Hard to beleive its 31 years old this year. (P) © 1978 RSO Records, Inc. Lol it says in fine print at the back bottom "Also Available on 8 Track 8T-2-4002 and Cassette, CT-2-4002.
  5. According to this site, the deleted gas chamber scene was filmed but was cut from the production release. Just hope that its still around and may be restored. You will have to scroll down half way to read the article. The screenplay can be downloaded from there, neat. http://filmsnoir.net/category/scripts
  6. Gidget, the cute Chihuahua we use to see in the Taco Bell commercials past away at age 15. For the story http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20293002,00.html
  7. Now for the flip side of the coin. "Talk about the wrong stuff" Colonel William Sharp "Armageddon"
  8. From The Associated Press Walter Cronkite's funeral to honor CBS newsman NEW YORK ? A funeral for Walter Cronkite, widely considered the premier TV journalist of his time, will be a private family service. But the ceremony, to be held Thursday afternoon at St. Bartholomew's Church in midtown Manhattan, where the CBS newsman's family worshipped for decades, is likely to draw scores of his loved ones, friends and colleagues. Although the service is planned as a traditional burial service from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer, announced speakers include "60 Minutes" commentator Andy Rooney and longtime Cronkite producer Sanford Socolow, as well as son Chip Cronkite. Music is expected to include a jazz band's rendition of "When the Saints Go Marching In." For his reporting, Cronkite came to be called "the most trusted man in America." He anchored "The CBS Evening News" from 1962 until 1981. Cronkite died Friday at his Manhattan home at age 92. A separate memorial will be held within the next few weeks at New York's Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
  9. My motto: "Remember and learn from the past so we can build a better future"
  10. Or they can fill the gap by showing an old "one reeler". One nice example is an Ub Iwerks cartoon short, Flip the Frog's "Spooks" (1930) There must be tons of these one reelers in film vaults. Better time spent.
  11. Hey where did you find the secret recipe for "Elly May Clampett's Chocalate Cake"?
  12. I still remember the days before videotape when TV stations used the "Telecine" system in which there was a 16mm projector / TV camera setup. It was the ONLY way to show movies. Back then beggers couldn't be choosers. Here's an example Message was edited by: hamradio I knew I should have used Tinypic.com
  13. ha, if you ever saw the silent print of "Captain January" 1924 you would probually jump out the window.
  14. Lol, that sounds like the name of a NAVTEX thread. (----buoy LZ-44005 light out----) NNNN
  15. Will the first episode have Leonardo DiCaprio being crucified along the Appian Way ?
  16. Considering it was also 1,000 years after The Viking Leif Ericsson landed in the Americas. As Leif would have said, what am I, chopped goat meat? I was here first!
  17. Is Dorothy one lean mean fighting machine in the game. If so, what are the weapons at her disposal? Is she the Lieutenant Ellen Ripley type of charactor?
  18. I just saw something that topped this day off. The guys on "Mythbusters" just BUSTED the so called proof that the Apollo conspiracy theorest had that NASA faked it. Ha, that one experiment was an eye opener. The American flag actually "waved" harder and longer in a VACUUM. Maybe those CT idiots can go and get a life now. Those guys on Mythbusters are so cool. The NASA Channel did let me down in that they didn't show the entire Eagle lunar landing and EVA like they did 5 years ago.
  19. The only thing I didn't like was that there was no continuety between scenes, it jumped from one mission to another - NOT in order when they actually happened. During the space walk scene, did you saw the glove flew out the hatch? Its *still* in orbit today. The famous Apollo 11 1201 alarm is the "Dsky" computer overloading from too much information. It has the computing power of todays digital watches.
  20. On the History Channel they presented "Live from ' 69 : Moon Landing" Its some of the original news footage of the first lunar landing. It had some very nice news clips of Walter Cronkite anchoring the Apollo 11 mission. Very nice.
  21. "The Long Hot Summer" (1958) could make a good substitute though. Must be the heat.
  22. Funny, "God's Little Acre" is what I saw on the very end of "Knowing". Wonder if thats a new beginning or "here we go again".
  23. Just wondering why Mary Pickford is on the "0 list"? Most of her acting was done during the silent era and the first Academy Awards wasn't presented until 1929. Its no surprise that she wasn't nominated.
