  1. "Shangri-La" and the ending in the movie "Knowing".

I just remembered an episode of "Star Trek TNG - Times Arrow" that Counselor Troi was trying to convince a skeptical Mark Twain that they have created a "utopia" in that they have eliminated poverty, greed, disease, etc. Utopia, right, ha with the Borg and the Romulians knocking at their front door. I guess every Eden needs a serpent.

  2. About the end credits, AMC and the premium channels do the same thing. Pay per View is the only one that doesn't.

    About Mr Gower, ROFL !!

RainingViolets101 - thanks for warning me, I won't watch that. It will ruin the memory of this fine classic. Cloris Leachman - sounds like the kind of angel I would get stuck with as my luck goes. Ever seen her in "Prancer"?

  3. My member name reflects my hobby which is ham radio but I am also into electronic kit building and my favorite company is Heathkit. Check out the recent Blu ray thread and you can see my recent project.

Your thread is not silly, its a good reflection of the movie itself. I like members with a sense of humor. I like to point out a few here on the board takes this forum seriously (maybe too seriously) so don't be surprise if you see unkind remarks at times.

I watch TCM whenever something I like is on. Last night though I viewed other channels, watched "Its a Wonderful Life" on NBC and "Star Trek Generations" on WGN, haven't seen it in a while. Loved those one liners I almost forgot about I've been saving the galaxy since your grandfather was in diapers - Captain Kirk and I have an appointment with eternity and I don't want to be late - Dr Soran.

I just noticed WGN is using that old "Lets Go to The Lobby" ad in their feature movies during commercial breaks.

I have no paticuliar preference to any director or producer, it simply depends on the movie itself. I like stuff off the beaten path - getting bored of the same ole, same ole. CBS just showed "Yes Virginia" a couple of nights ago, a very nice Christmas animated short. Wished they made it an hour long instead.

  4. The plot of the movie suppose to be "the worlds smallest country declares war on the United States". I think the producers forgot the worlds smallest country is *Vatican City*. Hope they don't threaten us with that antimatter bomb from "Angel and Demons", lol!

Oddly there actually is one of the worlds smallest countries within that general area in the movie called Liechtenstein. (62 square miles).

A "Q' bomb? Hmm, I'll need to ask him but I don't think he needs one.

Welcome to the boards! Very humorous thread, I haven't seen that movie in over 20 years (ouch its been that long!) If our politicians did watch it, they would only call them *terrorist!*

  5. CK, I'm watching "Its a Wonderful Life" again tonight and I just noticed something. At the beginning when George was a kid and went to his fathers office, Mr Potter was *old* and after 20+ years later when George Bailey became a young adult and got married, Mr Potter hasn't seem to age a bit.

Was Mr Potter *born* a mean grouchy old man??

This reminds me of Mr Strickland in "Back to the Future" when Marty McFly said after seeing a much younger Mr Strickland "did he ever had hair!?".

  6. I just saw the nicest little animated Christmas short, "Yes Virginia" on CBS at 8:00PM EST. Its based on the 1897 article "Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus" that appeared in "The New York Sun".

Glad to see something a little on the "new" side. I hope this little 30 min short becomes a classic like "Frosty, The Snowman". A nice compliment to the 1991 feature length movie.

  7. If you are saying that TCM don't show rare films, then you don't view TCM as much as you claim. I've seen movies here I never thought existed. What other channel shows Soviet silents, lol!

You should have been here November 23rd between 8:00 pm to 1:00 am. I've never seen those movies in my life (neither I think anyone else).

TCM is the only channel I beleive that shows silent movies. If you are arguing that TCM do show very recent movies i.e. 2000's then I feel your pain - but it doesn't leave me rambling, just disappointed! (VERY!)

Footnote: Being cryptic doesn't save one from being "padlocked" here though.

  8. I need to ask a very important question about everyones DVD hookup. How is your DVD system connected to the TV. Do you use coax or the audio/video cables for the standard DVD player or recorder? A lot of people uses the coax because of ease of connection but one does not get the better picture quality compared to using audio/video cables. I do mean the heavy shielded type not the skimpy cables.

I always use my audio/video only and the only time I use coax is for cable to the VCR but I haven't recorded from it in the past several years - I record only from my Directv using the audio/ video connections.. I already know that HDTV and Blu-ray uses the HDMI cables but many HDTV sets also has the standard coax, audio/video and the seperate RGB hookups.

My computer also uses a dedicated TV / composite video / FM radio card

I think my player gives me a very good sharp picture. Below is a snapshot from the Platinum Edition of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". I don't see anything wrong with it. I have no plans to replace it even if I buy a Blu ray player. I don't pay twice for the same thing. Funny I just purchased a NIB Dual Cassette Deck (for a spare) so I am not giving up my cassette collection either.

  9. A few years ago, George Bush showed us such a satellite photo of that area, how gloomy! Halloweentown in Tim Burton's "The Nightmare Before Christmas" is a much *cheerful* place.

I have the large foldout picture of "Earth at Night" that was included in the November 2004 issue of National Geographic magazine.

Lol, look at Moscow, it has a "star" light pattern. On my "Earth at Night" map it even shows the very large natural gas burn-off in Siberia. Why don't they send it to us instead? I'm sick of my high gas bills! The idiots, they are sending $$$ up in flames!

  10. I like to add something about North Korea. If you think they were bad back then, you have no idea the conditions that exist there today. I seen a documentary on MSNBC "Inside North Korea" and to date that is the most scariest thing I have ever seen.

If anyone wonders why there are no (or VERY FEW) North Korean defectors, its that they have a shocking policy that not only is the immediate family arrested but the *entire extended family* are arrested and sent to a special camp in which they never return. This can be in the hundreds. It doesn't matter of one is a cousin living on the other side of the country will no contact with his / her relatives or don't even know they exist, they are treated no different. That is a powerful deterent. Hitler or Stalin never went *that far!!*

Pity any poor soul being captured by them today.

A quote from the narrator on the documentary about the eye to eye contact of the guards at the only border crossing, if looks could kill, the death toll will be incalculable.
