Yes ALL his followers deserved the death penalty but the death penalty statute which was in effect at the time of Manson's crimes was overturned as unconstitutional in a 1972 decision by the Supreme Court of California temporarily so that his death sentence could not be carried out. Later, a death penalty statute was enacted in keeping with the Consitutional guidance of court decisions. Only capital crimes committed since that statute went into effect can be punished by death.

A law can not be applied to anything done before its passage. That is known as "ex post facto" and is prohibited by the US Constitution.

Lets keep in mind that crimes committed against our loved ones does not give us a license to commit them ourselves. What a Helter Skelter world it would be if that was the case!

  2. I like the fact the girl forgave him and it would be a perfect world if others especially our government did as well but we all should know by now how our government works.. The problem is our laws on the statue of limitations. It STOPS running once you leave the country.

Matter of fact just recently many states have passed the statue of limitation towards this type of crime to the average of 20 years even if you are living in the same area the offense took place.

If he stayed here and faced the music back then his penalty would have been far less severe especially after he plead guilty - he might have got probation or a couple of years at the most.

After the mid 1980's sexual child abuse has been a very volitile subject and have created new laws like the sex offenders registry. Many have argued in the Polanski case that we should now forgive and go on. Well shouldn't this then be the case with ALL sex offenders who haven't commited a crime after paying their debt to society or will we as a hypocritical nation set double standards when it comes to the average Joe and to celebrities.

He should be thankful this didn't happen in the state of Nevada that has the harshest punishment for sex with a minor. (What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas).

About the settlement with the girl, this is a civil court matter not a criminal case.. http://www.rbs2.com/cc.htm

It now up to the courts not up to the news media (as usual with celebrities) to decide his fate. It might not be as bad as we think. He probually will have to register as a sex offender.

We can only hope for the best. I myself want fair treatment for *everyone.*

Just for food for thought, if his name was Bubba from the Bronx and he did the *same* thing, what would our opinion be then?

Does this suppose to mean something or is it just to *decorate!*

  3. For me the only 4 I can think of are

    "The Wild Bunch",

    "Battle of Britain"

    "True Grit".

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid", which has a song I still like to this date "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" by Burt Bacharach and Hal David who have produced several other tunes I like. LOL its playing tonight on AMC !

I like to get a little off topic but 1969 was a sad year with the deaths of Boris Karloff, Judy Garland, Robert Taylor, John Boles and Sharon Tate.

<< As much as I like the Dick Tracy movies, you have to keep tuning in every Saturday if you want to see the continuing hour of the plot. >>

That how it used to be back during the old movie serial days of the 1930's and 40's, one had to wait to see what happened to our hero, the following week. Not only Dick Tracy but Flash Gorden and Buck Rogers were also like that. I don't think todays fast pace society has the patience to wait like they did in the past.

    To be Continued.........

  5. Thats why it took 20 years to make "Mississippi Burning". Who made "The Phenix City Story" were *brave* indeed!

When we look back on this film, one must remember that people during the 1950's didn't see the type of gory violence and unsettling language we see and hear today. We today have mostly become desensitized to it.

  6. Welcome to the boards. I wish you the best in your film making career. If you do become a film maker *TRY* to make a host of films that will bring back the thrill of going to the cinema again. We need someone that has an imagination and will do better then the trash we see today.

Oh yes, *PLEASE don't do remakes !*

  7. You be surprised but I've seen several unbuilt 1960's Heathkit B&W TV's sold on Ebay for hundreds of dollars. I built a 12" B&W back in 1975 and seen a lot of old classics on it. The one thing about watching old movies on a B&W set, you don't get that annoying brown tint you see once in a while on a color set.

By the way if you think todays HD's were expensive, look at a cost for a B&W TV in 1954 - this is 1954 dollars!

Note: Just *now* found out we don't have to worry about width size anymore.

  8. I never remembered seeing or hearing anything during the first half of the 20th Century in which outlaws or gangsters targeted children. This would have been too much for your average movie going Joe back in the 1950's to stomach.

This film is intense for a 1955 movie. Movie has a nice one liner (when you saw the old TV camera), "I bring you news from hell.

  9. I am watching it at present and the little "turtle bowl" with the palm tree reminded me when I was a kid. I had one that was oblong and kept 3 turtles in it. They loved bacon. Lol.

About the movie itself, did it meet the "code" back in 1955. It looks like a type of movie that only adult type of movie houses showed or regular cinemas would only show late at night. Nothing the parents of 1955 would take their kids to see.

If my gut feeling is right, it explains why this movie is rare.

Just curious, why is the city spelled "Phenix" instead of "Phoenix"?

What I've seen, I'll take making moonshine anytime. I'll save you a jug, hic.
