  1. Like TCM, FMC also sometimes shows great uncut classic movies You don't need to "apologize" for it. I do know that some members gets a little unedge for us mentioning other channels. At present on the G4 channel, they are showing an early Bruce Lee movie "The Big Boss" (1971) which I have never seen before. Nice to see some of his earlier work before he became a legend. He's sort of laid back (if thats the word) in this film. They just recently paid tribute to Bruce Lee.

Mr 880 has a nice unique poster.

  2. You know with all the celebrities passing away during the past couple of weeks, we don't even know (or care) that America's pitch man Billy Mays past away recently.

Who going to get us to buy now?

RIP Billy (1958 - 2009) I'll remember you whenever I wash my clothes.

  3. Its a good idea but like on TCM, *younger* viewers would wan *recent* movies which had a 1930's time line i.e. "Public Enemies" thats showing in theatres now.

We will simply be back where we started from.

When one sees the banner at the very top of this web page, one would expect to see 1930's movies on TCM.

Fedya, what I was referring to is that a lot of good movies get released in one year like the list in 1939.

For myself the best year in which a lot of movies came out was 1982. For any movie fans living in 1939, I know what the feeling that would have been like.

  4. Is the upcoming movie "Orphan" another "Bad Seed" remake or a future wife for the antichrist?

Does Hollywood see only the bad in our children anymore? I saw the commercial and its enough to creep me out. One thing is certain, this girl starring in this movie is *not* going to find a date when she gets older (unless the boy has a death wish).

  5. Whatever you do, KEEP that placard, its a very RARE collectors item. I was in a rush to see the history of gangsters in the movies last night and didn't have time to add another photo.

Here is one of the first police 2 way radios. Some oldtimers might remember the "Police" band on the old 1930's - 40's radios that use to occupy the lower shortwave band. This in the trunk of the car is ONE 2 way radio. Wonder where they kept everything else? The tire I beleive was used as a shock absorber for the radio, not a spare.

  6. Well this is how a movie suppose to look when a studio don't skimp on set decorations or use fake outdoor scenes on sound stages. Using outdoor shots really helps these early movies, makes it more realistic. I like the"CSI" style of teaching the viewer "how its done".

Noticed that scene when Cagney and the gangster who put him through law school after getting mistakenly shot after the hotel shootout (forgive me I forgot his name, ha)? You can SEE their breath. It is cold when that scene was shot. Nice giveaway.

The only "fake" scene I spotted was when the passenger train was speeding across the country side. Glad Warner Brothers used a Lionel, Lol.

Film was crisp and clear and had the perfect plot.

Now for some trivia, The opening shot that looked slightly out of place was inserted in 1949, 14 years after the film was originally released. The end title had the NRA (National Recovery Act) seal. G-men was probually one of the last movies to have this seal since the NRA was ruled unconstitutional in 1935.

Also 2 way radios finally started to make their way into police cars about a year after this movie was made - no more "calling all cars".

A job well done Warner Brothers.

  7. Sorry to hear about Karl Malden. I mostly know him as Lt. Mike Stone on the"The Streets of San Francisco," with Michael Douglas I watched a lot during the 1970's. The only movie role I know him in is playing General Omar Bradley in "Patton".

    RIP Karl Malden (1912-2009)

  8. Why do you think silents are silly? Just because the producers of that time period were the victims of the lack of technology that young people today take for granted. I bet there are many young viewers think that early *sound* movies are silly if they lack CGI special effects.

My view is that there are both good and bad silents as much as there are good and bad sound movies. Judge the movie for what it is. Does it convey a story that we like regardless if it lacks sound or special effects? When you get *older* you might regret the snobbish viewpoint of silents like I did when I was very young. I now have silents I have recorded and *bought!*

For an interesting footnote, I bought back in 1997 "Titanic, Music as Heard on That Faithful Voyage". Odd as it might sound, I really like a few selections on it, most I have never heard before. Music made between 1898 - 1912. Much better then the crap they put out today!

Do the producers of that biopic thinks she was that *dense?* So they must think Bettie beleives that people were admiring her brains.

To coin the thoughts of Paris Hilton, DUH!

  10. I remembered today that I had a photo example of a sound stage shot of what I beleive is the shooting of "The Mummy". You can see Boris Karloff center right between the camera and the automobile mockup. Notice the size of the sound stage and look at a rare view of them using rear projection. It shows the Pyramids in Egypt on the screen.

When I see stuff like this, its a wonder that movies turns out as good as they do. I had to scan this photo in from one of my photography books. Due to TCM's size restrictions I had to constrict the actual size to width=600 which caused a slight "interference pattern". To see the photo better, click on 30veyqh.jpg

  11. The thing is that if the oldtimer didn't mentioned it to begin with, you may have never noticed the "sound stage effect". I've been noticing it A LOT in old movies. It was a nice break to see a couple of Warner Brothers movies some time back filmed outside, what a difference.

The one thing that also stands out in some movies is the studio using rear projection to simulate the location without having to be there. It stands out as a contrast difference. The best example is the movie "Stowaway" during the boat dock scene. Shirley is walking along a walkway and that rear projection shot stands out like a sore thumb. The thing of it is, Hi Def is going to make this stand out even *more*.

I'll bet you will be looking at old movies more *closely* now!

If you like similiar peoples reflections and stories, heres one site you might find interesting. It does mention the rear projection a few times.

  12. The New York Times have picked up old news. Amateur radio operators who have the real estate and some spare cash have been doing this for several decades. Its actually called EME (Earth Moon Earth) communications. In simple terms, one is using the moon as a gigantic reflector. Here are some links on the subject. Its the best challange for any radio operator with Meteor Scatter coming in second.

The antenna in the NY Times is overkill (but it doesn't hurt to have it, lol)

Here is a more simpler backyard EME antenna

Kyle thanks for the Buzz Aldrin update.
