  1. >There used to be a network called "American Life" (I don't know if it still exists or if it's called something else) and they would show the old cop shows (this was like two or three years ago) and some old sit-coms, Harry-O turned out to be one of them. I had not seen them since I was too little to remember. I really liked those I saw. I didn't know it wasn't on DVD or available elsewhere. That's too bad. I think it's on dvd, but I was hoping it was available somewhere like youtube or netflix where I could watch a few episodes before paying for a box set... I don't even know if I'd like it. >I also need to check out Peter Gunn. All I know is the music! I've never seen it, but they used to show reruns of a show called *Mr. Lucky* that also had music by Mancini. I really liked the show, it was a take off from the movie, but lighter, more sophisticated and I hadn't actually seen the movie before I watched the show. It used to be on at two in the morning when I was in college...so I'd stay up to watch it. He was a gambler who kept getting in the middle of shady dealings kind of like *Maverick* (which I love). I don't know how I missed Kojak on your list, or Marty! Duh. I did actually look at it.... my face is red. All those seventies shows like Cannon and Ironside.... I was just too little to really get into. I did like *To Catch a Thief.* That was more my speed.
  2. Oh my gosh, I am an absolute dunce at guessing whodunits. *Ellery Queen!* I just realized I left one of my favorite shows off my list! They give you time to guess at the end - I never got the right person. It's such a fun show...like an old radio mystery. It also has 'Higgins' in it. Edited by: JackFavell on Aug 10, 2011 9:14 PM
  3. It has the seediness of The Rockford Files, but with Harry being a little more serious and more world weary than Jim Rockford. He's rather more like what Bogart would have been like had he played Spade or Marlowe at an older age. Mellower, sadder. Oooh, now I really have to see it! I was too little to appreciate it when it was on. He just seemed like another old guy with a TV show. I was foolish. Where did you ever get episodes of *Harry O*? Or is this one you remember watching with your mom? I can't find it anywhere. I thought I'd try *RIchard Diamond*, too, though I was just reading that many Janssen fans seem to think he only had one note to play in the show. It was a simple character, and Janssen was much better at conflicted ones. I just remember *Hill Street Blues* being really different. It was more like a play. In fact, I remember at the time thinking that it was like *Detective Story*, at least in feel. I always liked anything that I could watch and absorb good acting in, even if it was way over my head. Poirot is a feast of costumes and settings isn't it? I liked the Miss Marples with Joan Hickson too, but they are less elegant. No one mentioned *Kojak*..... I never watched it.....but I thought i should bring it up. or CHIPS and ADAM 12 with Marty Milner.
  4. Thanks! Get there nice and early so you can get control over the remote. I'm getting excited!
  5. I know... I know! But he was too cool for school on the show. I liked hot head Starsky.
  6. Well, I am hoping to have some good copies by the end of tomorrow, so just let me know. I'll have Ben gallop over to your place, pronto.
  7. Did anyone like Hutch? I don't think so.
  8. That's too bad, Ro! I hope you can catch some of the festivities. If you need a care package, I can send some of these out Pony Express, if my recorder is still working by the end of the day....
  9. Mmmm...... :x :x :x Thanks, Maven! Edited by: JackFavell on Aug 10, 2011 5:33 PM
  10. I never heard of it either and watched all but the last half hour - together we have a whole movie in our heads.... I suddenly like Michael Wilding. I watched him in Stage Struck then An Ideal Husband and saw Under Capricorn last year and I really like him, in that very narrow range of films. He's awful in Torch Singer or Hollywood type films, but get him with a good director, in the right part and he's quite good. Wasn't Margaret Lockwood stunning? I thought she looked even more beautiful in this one than some of her earlier movies...
  11. You decribed Brenda to a T! Ha! She is actually very persaudable in her real life... kind of unsure and easily swayed.... but get her on a case and 'steamroller' is almost not a strong enough term! Chano Amenguale Oh me.. it has been like what.. 30 yrs?? But I still remember that episode. It was well played by Sierra. I do remember. I loved those characters and how they all interacted. (Chana was good.. and Wojo too.. but of course the soft spot in MY heart still has to go to FISH! ) The truth is, I could have listed every character on Barney Miller with no problem, the same with Hill Street Blues or Third Watch... on Barney, Wojehowicz and Dietrich were also two of my favorites, but I can easily say Jack Soo and Fish as well. I also really liked James Gregory as Inspector Luger, oh he was just awful! It takes a lot to make a character that unlikable.... he should have got an emmy. They all should have. It's probably clear at this point that I love large cast episodic cop shows with ongoing characters who change and have great ensemble acting. I still get hooked on these types of shows every now and then. I didn't even see Third Watch until it was on in reruns on A&E, which they don't run anymore. And I am stubborn like you - I don't watch the shows that everyone is hyping... I didn't watch ER for a long time, but I finally saw it in reruns when I was pregnant, and I got hooked - why, I don't know... imagine watching all that hospital stuff when you are pregnant! I am floored that it didn't bother me. I forgot a couple of cops - Baretta - I know it's not popular to like Robert Blake anymore since his troubles, but I really liked him on this show, he was a lot of fun to watch and I thought he was very good at presenting a street smart cop. He was very emotional, and I liked that. Sydney Bristow - Alias - I really enjoyed this show.. though it is more a spy show than cops - I thought Jennifer Garner was great at presenting a strong woman who still had conflicting emotions and a sensitive nature. I never did understand the plot, but who cares?
  12. I like that Lynley was trying to help but Havers took it as a case of noblesse oblige. She got really mad as I probably would have, that she didn't need any help from the lordly Inspector. It turns out he seems to need more help in his life than she did... I like how different their backgrounds are. And he's cute. Terrible at picking women though.
  13. Be still my heart! I really didn't expect any Tom Santschi posters! Tom is sort of a forgotten hero, no one really knows him nowadays...kind of like the cowboys he portrays. But he's THE man, in my book. I love that iconic picture. He's so strong, he only needs black and white to get across his rugged nature.... swoon.... :x Thanks, Kyle. h5. whew.
  14. Ooooh! I love *Cracker* ! He's awesome, I should have put Robbie Coltrane on my list... and you are great at describing Havers... I love her character... she's got a messy, ordinary life, but her heart is huge.
  15. Great lists! MissG - I am so surprised at your list...you've got some from way back on there! My older sister used to watch Mannix all the time, she was addicted...I just remember Mike Connors thick black hair and monsyllabic style. I'm going to have to check this one out. I just remember him getting beat up a la John Payne every episode. I also want to check out Harry O - I really like David Janssen. Ro- I love your list, you've got some great choices there! These are my kind of detectives. I love that you have some women included. I especially love Lennie Brisco, but prefer him with Chris Noth (Mike Logan). S. Epatha is one of my FAVORITE actresses, I just love when she gets the lead part in the show....some of those are my favorite episodes. I also really liked Jill Hennessy as Claire Kincaid, and Carolyn McCormack as Elizabeth Olivet. Sam Waterston is super, he's not always a nice guy, and I like that. Far more dimensional than Michael Moriarty ever was. My list would have to be based more on character actors...I just love cop/detective shows because they have such great side men... characters who are just so outrageous or different that you can't help but like them. so my list would probably look something like this: *1.* *Columbo* Peter Falk - I don't think I need to explain this. He's just the best. A character actor as the lead... my kind of hero! *2. Lennie Brisco* Jerry Orbach (Law and Order) - Geez, he IS New York. Abrupt, always with a mouthy comment, but kindly, warm and with a dark alcoholic past. What's not to love? *3. Brenda Leigh Johnson* Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) - She's just so dang professional. She's nutty, but razor sharp when it comes to trapping someone into "closing" out a case without them even realizing how she is squeezing them into a corner. *4. Det. Sergeant Chano Amenguale* Gregory Sierra (Barney Miller) - Chano was always the most relaxed guy on Barney Miller. But when they gave him a two part episode, showing what happens to his psyche when he has to shoot someone for the first time, I fell hard for this character. Sierra was a truly underrated actor. It still breaks my heart thinking about it. For a comedy, this show was always pushing boundaries. *5. Sgt Mick Belker* Bruce Weitz (Hill Street Blues) - Belker was the dirty, gross street cop, the one who always went undercover tracking drug dealers and pimps, the lowest of the low. You'd usually find him sitting in an alley, cadging handouts from passersby.... but when going after the bad guys, he was as tenacious as a bulldog, using his craziness to capture the stunned and frightened perps, who didn't know what the heck was going on when Belker suddenly came at them in a flurry. He also carried a pet mouse in his pocket.... until it's unfortunate demise. *6. Officer J.D. LaRue* Kiel Martin (Hill Street Blues) - This show was full of great intense characters, and I could name all of them on this list, but Belker and LaRue really stood out. LaRue was a cop who couldn't walk the straight and narrow. He was constantly getting caught doing something shady, always fighting to keep his job. Another heartbreaking character. *7. Officer Faith Yokas* Molly Price (Third Watch) - Faith Yokas is probably trhe best cop on this underrated show about cops, firefighters and paramedics, the trinity of folks who watch over us ordinary citizens each day. She knows how to do her job and is one tough cookie. At the same time, she is a mom and a wife, and her home life is falling apart. She can control things on the job, but at home? Naaah. *8. Quincy MD*. Jack Klugman - Well it's Jack Klugman, and if it isn't obvious now that I like tenacity and dogged perseverence in my favorite characters, well then you haven't been reading. *9. Monk* Tony Shalhoub - He's played by Tony Shalhoub... one of the most gifted actors on the planet. He's got a fatal flaw, or maybe it's a gift.... who knows which? He tries to overcome his problems, is scared, and outrageously funny all at the same time. *10. Inspector Lynley* Nathaniel Parker - He's so darn cute. *11. DCS Foyle* Michael Kitchen (Foyle's War) - I've only seen one of this series so far, but MIchael Kitchen is just wonderful! Quiet, competent in spite of bureaucratic meddling from his superiors, he wears his emotions just under the surface. He's a gruff but very calm, comforting presence and I can't wait to see more of these! *12. Poirot* David Suchet - He's persnickety. Observant. Cold. A man who studies human nature. Once in a great while, he is shaken in his faith in himself. I honestly don't know why I like him so much.
  16. Ha! I say fire up the griddle, {color:rgb(0, 0, 0)}{font:Arial,Verdana,Helvetica,sans-serif}Peacemaker! {font}
  17. First of all, I am really happy that *Ann Dvorak* got to shine today... she is without a doubt one of the most accomplished leading ladies never to be a huge star. Helenbaby - I missed *Crooner* and the next two movies, and I am so disappointed. I'm hoping that I can get a look at these someday soon. *Three on a Match* is great, with Ann in the showcase role. M'ava - I got to see *Side Streets* today for the first time, and enjoyed it very much. Aline was wonderful of course, and I got to see Paul Kelly do his stuff on his birthday.... I'd read about him a week ago in correlation to Tom Neal. I'm so glad that Aline finally had a role where she got the man.... I also saw *Stranger in Town*, which I liked a lot. Ann really shone in that one. I recorded most of the films after these two today, but missed my all time favorite *G-Men*. I could kick myself for not switching out discs, but I was busy and got a phone call right before it started and forgot all about it. It's one of my very, very favorite Jimmy Cagney films, so I am really bummed out now. Luckily, it's easy to find. wouldbestar - I LOVED *the V.I.P'S.* and really liked what you wrote about it.... it's totally better than Airport. Boy, you are right, Margaret Rutherford just stole the entire movie for me! She was great. This is going to be my guilty pleasure from now on...especially with Rod Taylor .... I liked the last scene of Liz and Richard Burton walking into a very uncertain future.. makes you hope for them.
  18. Glad to hear John Ford is still packing the theatre!
  19. Drooling over the color schemes in these two posters, Kyle.... not to mention such a gorgeous image of George O'Brien... :x :x :x It's so dramatic, I need to know what happened... did she shoot him, or is she going to shoot the men that did that to him?
  20. I love the Duke and Tony posters together! It's a shame they never made a picture together. It's funny, Tom looks more like John Wayne than John Wayne does in his poster.
  21. I haven't seen MacBetth either, but I'd love to see his version. I actually have Chimes at Midnight, I got it recently but haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I need uninterrupted time for that one. Maybe when school starts I can get to it. I love the idea of putting all the Falstaff scenes together to make one story. I really would love to see Black Magic, it sounds SO interesting! I was reading about it recently and now I am dying to find it. My favorites are Jane Eyre, which I haven't seen in years, and Compulsion - Welles is so great in these two movies, just simply as an actor. He's a perfect Rochester, and in Compulsion he is absolutely first rate, underplaying it, especially his final summation. That scene alone is enough to show that Welles was a brilliant actor.
  22. I don't usually do this, and this is NO knock against TCM in any way....I am thrilled that Orson Welles has his day in SUTS. There are far too many Welles roles to have them all represented in one day. Here is my list of Orson Welles movies I would have liked to seen today, movies that showcase his acting ability, and ones I haven't seen in a long time, or haven't seen at all, but want to. 1. Jane Eyre 2. Compulsion 3. Chimes at Midnight 4. Othello 5. Macbeth 6. Prince of Foxes 7.Black Magic
  23. These just get better and better! Love the Harry Carey, and the Buck Jones. The colors and the style, so detailed in this set of posters, really evokes a feeling of being outdoors. The sense of movement in this particular series is incredible.
