  1. I would love to get a pin made up to look exactly like that one! I wonder how many people would know what it was from.....
  2. Oh, MissG! How on earth did you find Little Orphant Annie? and so quickly! Thank you for posting those awesome pics. I thought that scene was original to Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer.... what a hoot!
  3. So! Did anyone get any movies as gifts?? I'm all ears (well, eyes)...Jackie???? No Ford at Fox for Christmas. It was an entire collection of Mozart. 17 cd's worth. I may sell the Mozart to get my Ford at Fox, and I'll just pray my dad doesn't ask me to play Eine Kleine Nachtmusik...... But, look what I got for Christmas....something very, very special....I'll share with you.....
  4. I am not surprised that Boleslawski concentrated on character. I believe he is the same man who wrote a book we used in college- Acting: the First Six Lessons. It is still considered to be one of the greatest books for teaching acting. He was one of a handful of people in the thirties who taught the Stanislavski method (Maria Ouspenskaya is said to be another). I am now really curious to see the movie.
  5. I just found a really great picture of Olive Borden- so I thought I would post it here. It isn't from *3 Bad Men*, but she looks almost exactly the same here in this still from *The Country Beyond* :
  6. Weren't those just great movies to watch on Christmas Eve? B-) They sure were, Mica. I wish they were doing as well on New Year's Eve. Though it's nice to see That's Entertainment, I wish they had made a little more effort. I will be watching 30's Lubitsch and Jewel Robbery, if I get my way. I will toast Mr. Lubitsch and all light comedies ever made with some very dry champagne, the kind that just fizzes away into nothing when it hits your mouth.... I always like movies that show New Year's Eve parties - Nothing Sacred, The Apartment, Holiday, even Showboat - when Irene Dunne sees her father in the audience.....or Penny Serenade and The Gold Rush, but I don't think I want to cry too much that night.....
  7. As for Billie Haines, he went up against the same "Shark" as so many others, including John Gilbert. Louis B. Mayer, by all accounts, seems to have been a person who's word was law, no in between, no compromise. In other words, he was simply impossible and it cost him some of his biggest stars. It's nice to see a happier ending to the story for William Haines, though. It's so unusual..... He got out and started over successfully. Beautiful pics, Metsie! Here are some pics, I think you might already have posted a couple of these, Jeff, but I found them recently and thought I'd post them for you: Corinne Griffith from *The Divine Lady* Jacqueline Logan, from *Dawn of Tomorrow* with David Torrence Eleanor Boardman: from *Diamond Handcuffs* with Lawrence Gray from *The Crowd* with James Murray Delores Costello from *Glorious Betsy* with John Miljan Marie Doro: from *Heart's Desire* from *Lost and Won* from *White Pearl* and Olive Borden from *The Country Beyond*
  8. hello everyone! Well, I taped the 36 Godfathers, and ..... ran out of room. apparently I taped only 58 minutes of the movie.... it's kind of funny that we all missed this one.... although I remember watching part of it this summer so maybe TCM will show it again soon.... I'm just glad I was able to record The Cheaters and Cluny before running out of space. Thnaks for the review of The Cheaters, FF. I love cakey brownies, no chips (why do they put chocolate chips in EVERYTHING nowadays? I want my oatmeal cookies with raisins, not choc. chips, and why choc.chips in ice cream?Yuck) Though my oatmeal cherry cookies came out just great..... Thank you, Bronxie O'Gill for my lovely Cuddles, all dressed up! I just love him. I admit that I only just saw *Christmas in Connecticut* for the first time last year. I had avoided it because I thought it was a sort of "second string" Christmas movie.... my bad. The sole reason for watching it is Cuddles! For me, it is a movie about a kindly older gentleman who works in a restaurant but gladly gives up his livelihood to help his rather idiotic friends during the Christmas season. I find that I am simply waiting for him to come back on the screen when he is not there....Dennis Morgan - who is he? Bring back Cuddles! and when Uncle Felix looks Sydney Greenstreet up and down and mumbles "....fat man..... " under his breathe, I am sent into a fit of the giggles every time. I noticed even Andrew laughed at almost every line that he had.....or facial expression as the case may be. I tried to photoshop this picture into another picture, so Cuddles was actually under the tree, but it didn't work. I lost a rag horse with a string tail... I still look for him, and I don't even live in the same house.... maybe they are all having a party somewhere together - string horse, tigger puppet and pink bear, all having tea....
  9. no sound - thanks for the encouraging words! I am going to try and find Paths and Little Orphant, though I doubt that Santschi's roles in them are as vivid as his characterization of "Bull" in 3 Bad Men. I am just so curious about this forgotten star, who went from villain to hero and back to villain again during the course of his career. I wonder if he had not died in1931 if he would have had another great role in him, or if he would have been relegated to playing the heavy in B pics....? William Haines was a brave man and most wonderful in that he stood up to the studio heads who wanted him to give up his true love, Jimmie Shields. He declined the offer, and quit the business after his contract was terminated, successfully moving into the design field. He and Shields remained together for 50 years, and Joan Crawford described them as "the happiest married couple in Hollywood." I think Haines was extroardinary.
  10. April- RE: 3 Godfathers : I DID think it looked so much like the middle east or an Arab desert ..... (which is one of my favorite DREAM places though I would never want to live there in real life).... but I thought I was crazy for thinking that....That is why the imagery had such a strong appeal for me. I think if at least two of us noticed it, it must have been on purpose.... I got a big kick out of watching the Duke try to hustle his behind up a sand dune, he just is too big and brawny to look graceful climbing through a mountain of sand that is crumbling away under his weight.... I noticed a TON of closeups in this one too, or at least as close up as Ford would go which is really more of a head and shoulders shot. It seemed unusual to me. I loved the way he kept focusing on Pedro Armendariz' face as he covered John Wayne when they first find the covered wagon in the storm. He just kept getting closer and closer, showing the intent way Pedro was looking. It really built suspense.... I also liked the way he would cut to Pedro every time there was a need for a conscience... having not seen the movie all the way through, I am curious if he was the conscience from the beginning, or if it was "thrust upon him" at this point in the movie....It seemed to me that he might have suddenly "seen the light". Kathy I am going to tape the exact same stuff! I hope there is enough room on my dvdr.... I am very excited about Cluny Brown/The Cheaters too, since I have never even heard of The Cheaters before. Good luck getting those tapes!
  11. Sorry I posted over here instead- I hadn't read the Western thread yet.... I have a few little thoughts on Kathy's ramble. I'll go post them over there now....
  12. HI, Everyone! You are probably all busy with Christmas Eve plans but.... I had to come see what was going on for a minute. Fred - thanks for posting the other versions of *3 Godfathers* .... I want to see all the versions too.... especially the Harry Carey one. I loved the music in the Wayne version. The Streets of Loredo is such an evocative song, even before I saw (bits of) this movie it made me get all choked up. The photography in 3 Godfathers was so beautiful. The sand dunes, wind and sky really were to me, anyway, the most beautiful of any Ford film I have seen so far. Isn't it interesting that critics always cite Monument Valley as Ford's canvas, and yet, no one has ever mentioned that every movie of his looks substantially different from any other..... Is the stagecoach seen crossing past the bank robbery the same one the boys find later? On another note.... I am putting out a last minute Christmas wish to Santa - I want S.Z. Sakall for Christmas this year...... I will check under the tree tomorrow morning. I hope he is there......
  13. Molo! I was just thinking about you and your mom yesterday.... I am thrilled she is home with the family, and I wish you and yours the very happiest of Christmases.....
  14. To whoever mentioned that *3 Godfathers* was going to be on today - I just want to thank you! I've never seen it. I taped it and watched little bits and pieces as it was on. Though I tried to watch it all the way through, I still missed great gaps of it. But that didn't matter - l got emotional every time the music would swell up, or if a particularly moving shot came on the screen. Just a shot of the Bible, pages blowing in the dust made me cry! I had to stop and watch at that point.....I think you guys made me get all goopy today, with that discussion of 3 Bad Men this afternoon......
  15. I had a bit of a depressing experience at a sight called Silent Era. I did a search of *Tom Santschi* and found.... a huge list of movies. But unfortunately, almost every one of them is either lost or is of unknown status. I finally stopped looking at about the fourth page of movies. The straw that broke the camel's back and my heart was this description of the movie _The Count of Monte Cristo_ (1912) : Selig brought this film to market before the Famous Players version, The Count of Monte Cristo (1913). Famous Players brought suit against Selig and won, forcing the destruction of the negative and all circulating prints of this film.
  16. oooh, thanks FF. I gotta run, just popping back in for a moment before Alice gets home..... :0 I love the hedgehog/kitty pic....
  17. MissG- There's still hope.... I actually bought the Lewton set for myself... it was such a good price on ebay, I couldn't pass it up....
  18. Well, looks like there's still room for a few more. LOL! Come on in and join the party, Mica!
  19. +After all these years, I'm only just noticing recently that Mac is "ol' Sourpuss" in Meet John Doe. Sweet!+ OH MY GOSH! I never realized till you just said that..... Ro, here's a big hug from me and a Merry Christmas....
  20. WG- Thnak you so much for your search! I hope you can find a copy of 3 Bad Men. It's a really super movie, and Tom Santschi is great in it. I love the pics you posted and I do think he isa getting socked on the jaw in the WS Hart poster. I think he probably got socked by everyone in the film industry at one time or another, since he specialized in bad guys for Tom Mix and Hart..... I wish I could find some pictures fro The Spoilers (1914).... but I don't think they exist...
  21. PS...that Santa of yours is a pretty smart cookie...so in tune w/ just what you want for Christmas!!! (My Santa usually leaves me a little money among his other gifts so if there is anything he forgot I can pick it up later...watta guy!!) :-) That's so sweet....
  22. I'll say! I'm coming here for New Year's Eve.....I hope it doesn't get too crowded....
  23. You guys made me want to search out a copy of Riley the Cop.... I've seen MacDonald's name a million times before watching 3 Bad Men, but I never really noticed him before.... Ro- I may have some nice screen caps of our "angel" after Christmas. I bought.... I mean... Santa is giving me a Val Lewton box set this year.... it's under the tree waiting for me... I was suspiciously close to opening it just now so I could post some better pictures.....but I refrained.
