  1. Is it coming on soon? I notice Jack MacGowran's name and would be interested in seeing it....
  2. I like Janice from Dr. Teeth's band too. I love the way she talks. She has little muppet boobs....it's a riot!
  3. Whoa! You guys don't mess around when you rumble.... I mean, ramble! It's awesome! Let me start by saying it has been a while since I saw the movie, having watched it and given my thoughts on it back about six months ago on the Ford thread.....so if I am completely mistaken in my viewpoints it's because I don't have a copy of the movie at hand and can't remember specifics too well. This thread is amazing, because while all of you are talking about Ford and redemption and black/white /grey, I am thinking that you are all like a little home-made family - just as Bull, Mike, Spade, Dan and Lee, and Millie are a representation of extended family. Ford reinforces that by showing us the babies and the older couple (the frame you posted is one of my favorite moments in the movie, BTW. I love that they equate the soil with gold).... Family is the most important thing, even if you have to reinvent it for yourself by choosing your own loved ones....as Lee did. As Bull, Mike and Spade did. And as we do here, every time we all get together like this and talk about what we love. I think this is why Spade and Mike helped Lee. They were not necessarily devoted to Lee or changed by her, but Bull WAS. And their loyalty was to their brother Bull. When they decide at the end to risk everything, it is because they are "all for one, one for all". And maybe it is an even truer love than that of a man for a woman - maybe the love of a man for his brother is what gets us weeping at the end of the movie..... The pictures of Layne and Liberty (interesting alliteration) are really cool! I think they are very telling.....The whip is a symbol of power, and in some respects the two are alike in their thirst for it. However, I have always thought that Liberty had his reasons for being the black villain that he is. Liberty has always struck me as an abused child.... at some point in life, he had no power, and so he takes as much as he can by being a bully now. He is completely unable to stop himself because he himself was beaten as a child, and he has rages deep within him built up over years and years of abuse. To him, this is what a man IS. This is how a man lives in the world. Perhaps I am overthinking it, but because of Lee Marvin's tremendous talent, that is what I get from his extremely deep characterization. With Layne I haven't yet gotten a clear picture of what drives him.... perhaps it is his need for fancy clothes? He is certainly a dandy of the first degree. Well, you can put the clothes on, but it's not going to change the inner soul. Again, the question is WHY? Why does he want to appear so perfect? Was he poor? Was he made fun of? Maybe he has just always been amoral, due to a genetic deficiency. Again, I think that many who are truly outside of society seek to gather the trappings of society around them, in order to appear as if they'd always been within the group they wish to belong to. Layne obviously enjoys the trappings, girls hanging about his neck, the feeling of privilege....but maybe this leads him to dump Millie- he's got to have the newest model girlfriend?.....Again, he thinks this is what a man is......Anyway, I will have to watch the movie over again to get more of a bearing on Layne's character. As for the what if? aspects of the movie- I could see Mike and Spade staying on as "uncles". After all, it's a hard life out there, trying to be a bad man! It's not easy, and they might just as well get some wages for light work around the homestead..... they could go into town and get drunk every once in a while.... Which leads me to Bull. I don't know if he could have stayed around. In fact, I am inclined to believe he would have been like Ethan, standing there, looking in at the door....so maybe for him it was better to end the way he did, as an angel to the new family.... I DO think that he was changed by Lee.... but that it had already started happening to him when he set out on his quest for his sister. Maybe, like John the Baptist, the loss of Millie and the sadness it brings him opens him to the redemption brought on by Lee. For Bull is definitely different, sadder, more wounded than either Mike or Spade at the beginning of the movie. And he sees his own guilt in Millie's disappearance. You are right that he has had some "bringin' up", but I get the feeling that Bull and Millie have been on their own for quite some time... perhaps that is why he turned to a life of crime.... he had to have food on the table and money to support little Millie. Maybe over time, he drifted away for a little too long or got too embroiled in his bad deeds to pay enough attention to her.... and so he feels particularly responsible for her downfall....He is a bit "broken" when we meet him....but the important thing about Bull is that he sees, and he sees the difference between bad and good...even in himself. I don't remember how Millie meets Layne.... is it possible that Bull introduced them? or am I just having a brain lapse? Anyway, thanks for letting me do a little (very little) rambling of my own. I am sure my musings are quite obvious, but I wanted to join the fun....
  4. "with eisenglass curtains you can roll right down.... " what the heck is eisenglass?
  5. Mr Lawyer Doll Yes, remember the suspense waiting for the ping pong balls to fall? I would wait with great anticipation every day to see the poor Captain get it.....
  6. Frank- I don't know about Jack...but mine has to be a saint to put up w/ the likes of me...so he deserves all the nice things I can say about him....(but don't tell him I said that!!) :-) Ditto here .... Sometimes I forget how lucky I am. Andrew and I are both stubborn (that helps our marriage, because neither one of us is going to be the one who gives up), but we are both sensitive (so we battle over little neurotic stuff). But down deep where it counts we get along pretty well and are on the same wavelength, especially when confronted by in-laws, or other outside forces...
  7. She is doing much better, thanks. I am now pretty tired but she has been making aliens and writing in a notebook all day. School was cancelled due to the threat of a winter storm, which didn't show up until 1:00 this afternoon ( I'll never understand why they cancel school when nothing at all is happening outside), so she didn't miss any classes by being sick. It is now totally white out and I like it like this because the house gets all muffled and quiet when the snow comes. It's a perfect night to watch Christmas in Connecticut..... IN Connecticut......
  8. Ralph the Dog would probably be my pick for favorite, if it weren't for Kermit ... I'm a sucker for piano playing dogs......He really should have been a bartender. He seems so understanding of human foibles.
  9. Until..... the next line is......I fell asleep!... I did too, but the fact that I was up at all is kind of amazing. My daughter was sick all night so I saw about one minute of Model Shop, and the very end of Shampoo, which I keep trying to see, but always miss.
  10. I had a hard time narrowing it down to one or two per show. When I like a show, I usually like a whole bunch of characters......

Gillis* (Frank Faylen) - The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis *Dog* (Benji) - Petticoat Junction *Emma Peel* (Diana Rigg) - The Avengers *Bret Maverick* (James Garner) - Maverick *The Flying Man* (Bill Irwin) - Northern Exposure *Artemus Gordon* (Ross Martin) - Wild Wild West *Kermit the Frog* (jim Henson) - various TV appearances *Mr. Moose* - Captain Kangaroo *Bunny Rabbit* - Captain Kangaroo *Sally* (Rose Marie) - The Dick Van Dyke Show *Buddy* (Morey Amsterdam) - The Dick Van Dyke Show *Nate Fisher* (Peter Krause) - Six Feet Under *Shorty* (Don Yesso) - Frank's Place *Lisa Simpson* (Yeardley Smith) -The Simpsons *Topo Gigio* - The Ed Sullivan Show *Gertrude/Heathcliff* (Red Skelton) - The Red Skelton Show All the characters portrayed by Tracey Ullman on The Tracy Ullman Show Message was edited by: JackFavell
  12. Jeannette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy They loved each other throughout their entire careers, in spite of (or maybe because) they were married to other people......
  13. This movie, along with *Milk* are the two movies I am most excited to see this year. Hollywood is actually showing some thought..... weird. I have to ask you, ham, if you have seen the movie , yet? For those of you who seem to think Nixon was either a completely innocent babe in the woods, or the victim of some strange conspiracy to make him look like a crook, I can only ask: What on earth have you been reading? I can only think that I have misunderstood your post and that it is a really sarcastic joke.....
  14. > {quote:title=ken123 wrote:}{quote} > IMHO Nixon was set up by the CIA with Hunt & McCord being the leading, on ground, players. It all relates back to the events of November 22, 1963, and before, see Advise & Consent and try to figure out the Nixon character. > > Question - Did Nixon have J. Edgar Hoover murdered ? I certainly would have.....
  15. I just posted an emergency call for photos over at the Silent Film Gallery. If anyone has pics of Tom Santschi, it will be them. I told them we would be VERY grateful..... I don't know exactly what that means but if they do well, I don't think I can be responsible for my actions!
  16. Those are just beeyootiful, Jeff. I especially like the Evelyn and Jetta pics, I don't think I have ever seen either one of those anywhere before..... I have a special request - Several of us are looking for some pictures of *Tom Santschi* (or Thomas Santschi). I thought I might pop over here to see if you folks might be able to dig up some pictures of him.... He acted in quite a few westerns, but also worked with Kathlyn Williams, Geraldine Farrar, Olive Borden and others at different points in his career. He acted in other genres, but seems to have been most at home in Westerns, and Action/Adventure movies. Some of his available movies are In Old Arizona, The Wagon Master, The Phantom of the West, and John Ford's 3 Bad Men. He was one of the fighters in the original 1914 version of _The Spoilers_ as well. Of course, portraits and publicity photos would be great too.....but we are not picky. If you can come up with some pictures, you would have some VERY grateful ladies over at the Ford at Fox and Movie Rambles threads.... Thanks for looking...... Wendy PS. Her is a link to his filmography at IMDB. Maybe you might have one of his movies without even knowing it.... http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0764346/
  17. I love the glamour too, I have to admit. I agree that there is NOTHING today like the attention to period and detail that come across in those photos. I have to say that even in today's movies, I will forgive a weak script or a silly plot if there are interesting sets and costumes to look at.....
  18. danel-you outdid yourself on that one! Congratulations on stumping the panel..... and BTW, little Thomas Sangster is SO cute! I really love him in this movie.....
  19. Now Bronxie, Why on earth did you watch Jacob's Ladder last night? Were you by yourself? I hope not.... it is a super creepy movie, a real mind bender..... Touch of Evil is awesome. I always think of an interview I saw once with Welles. They asked him about the more monstrous aspects of the character and he said something like, "Every monster has his reasons".... It's what makes Hank so interesting to watch...
  20. Molo- those are some fun movies on your list! I'm so glad you liked Portrait of Jennie. It's a nice eerie romance with some wonderful performances by Cotten, Barrymore (I think this is my favorite of hers), and Kellaway, not to mention Lillian Gish who seems perfect as a nun. Joseph Cotten is a really good underrated actor, and I am glad he is the SOTM right now..... Duck Soup is a favorite too.... "Ahh, married. I can see you right now in the kitchen, bending over a hot stove. But I can't see the stove." I liked Thirteen Women very much. It's silly, but very enjoyable. I didn't know that Welles wanted to cast Agnes Moorhead in The Stranger.... that's really interesting, I would love to have seen her in it.... I like Carmen Miranda in Down Argentine Way too. Kathy - I have a record of Carmen's popular hits... I bet it would be good to scrub the floors to! I will have to try it out.... More than likely I will find myself sashaying around with a fruit bowl on my head.....
