I hate when they have these big hairsprayed and puffed up curls in a rough and tumble, wild west environment! On TV it's not so bad, like Big Valley or Bonanza or Wild Wild West, but in the movies it just bugs me. Plus it dates a movie pretty badly......

I look forward to it, Mica.... -
Chris- Thanks for the heads up.... I have seen a lot of the early, non cowboy roles. the only one I really like is, strangely enough, *Roberta*. He is charming in that one..... *Westbound* is the other "Scotticher" (I coined a new word ) that everyone says is not so good. It is supposed to be the worst of the movies the two made together. Maybe I SHOULD watch it next just to get it out of the way before I hit the real meat and potatoes films.....

I kept going back to look at this one, and then I read a little from a "sneak peek" of the book. . It looked very interesting since he had that reputation, and here he was talking about his movies like any other director. So I was hooked. I will post any info I find, or if there are pictures, I will post them too. I am still waiting for Andrew to bring the scanner down from his desk upstairs. I think he is holding off because he knows how much time I already spend on the computer..... -
You guys have it all sewn up between Patty, Jane and Bonita, who are indeed the most awful of children. I would like to mention a few performances lower on the richter scale. These are brats, but not on the evil side. They are my favorite performances by children in movies (maybe because they are brats, and not sickeningly sweet little cardboard cutouts). 1. *Virginia Weidler* - Dinah Lord - The Philadelphia Story Virginia is sassy, obnoxious and a whole lot of fun. This performance is great because she is a REAL smart kid, butting in where she is not wanted, making comments far above her age, and the scene in which she sings Lydia the Tattooed Lady is the best in the movie. She steals the show. 2. *Margaret O'Brien* - Tootie - Meet Me In St. Louis "I'm the most horrible! I'm the most horrible!" Tootie not only chops the heads off her dolls long before Wednesday Addams was even a gleam in her creator's eye, she causes a trolley filled with people to go off the tracks. Then she and her sister Agnes laugh about it! I wasn't sure whether this performance would beat out Virgina Weidler for first place.....Tootie is a spoiled brat, but isn't she a chere enfant? I would say that there isn't a kid alive who hasn't done most of the things Tootie does in this movie. And Margaret O'Brien captures her perfectly. A wonderful performance. 3. *Diana Lynn* - Emmy Kockenlocker - The Miracle of Morgan's Creek Diana is a 14 year old mastermind evil-genius-in-waiting sidekick in this wonderful screwy comedy from Preston Sturges. She has all the best lines, and shows no mercy as she schemes and connives to get her sister Trudy married to the "dumb cluck" Norville......She even backtalks to her father, who, rightly says to her, " Listen, Zipper-puss! Some day they're just gonna find your hair ribbon and an axe someplace. Nothing else! The Mystery of Morgan's Creek!" Diana almost beat herself for third place- I love her other scheming 14 year old in The Major and the Minor almost as much as this one. 4. *Shirley Temple* - Susan - The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer What can I say. Susan is a headstrong young lady with a mighty crush on Cary Grant. Temple plays the opposite in this movie, and I find her unbelievably funny as the girl who causes so much trouble for everyone. The way she lords it over the rest of the cast is delightful, especially given her goody-two-shoes image in previous films. Shirley is the quintessential teen. I don't think I have to say any more.....

Loretta looks like the cat that ate the canary in those shots. Look how mooney-eyed she is in that first one.....

I bought myself a Christmas present and it came this week- A paperback copy of John Ford Interviews that I got on ebay. It is sitting under the tree waiting for me to open it and be surprised! "How thoughtful, Wendy. You shouldn't have!" I will say to myself....... -

John Gilbert's Later Career on TCM

Gosh! Those are beautiful, Jeff! I have never seen so many stills from Annie Laurie before... My sister had a book called "The Gish Sisters" or something like that, that was just filled with photos of the two of them throughout their careers. It was just beautiful. I used to look at it when I was a kid. I don't think I've seen any photos from Annie Laurie since looking at that book. -

Does anyone else remember in Dark Star that Leatrice Joy said she felt she made a mistake, not going back to John Gilbert?Or did I remember wrong? (Or am I just a victim of wishful thinking?) -

Oh, that is a great story! Thanks for posting it. I always enjoy Dahl for that sort of sickeningly funny stuff- and he writes sooo well.
