  1. I honestly don't know what blu-ray is. But I have more important things to buy - like Webkinz.... and double dutch jump ropes..... Besides, I just got my dvd collection to the point where I have most of what I want
  2. *A remark generally hurts in proportion to its truth.* This one just jumped out at me.... Maybe because of the talk about truth and "The Misfits" on the Movie Rambles thread....
  3. No, I haven't. I have always stayed away from her biographies, because I am of a somewhat similar personality type- my life is a bit too painful and neurotic to want to go there on purpose.....
  4. > > Anyway, for an actual western ramble: I am very excited today because my Blu-Ray of *The Searchers* came in the mail today, and I will hopefully be watching it this weekend. B-) I am so jealous. You are making me want to watch it again... for the holidays.....
  5. It worked! Thanks for asking, Mica. Finally. I am just glad I was able to save my message on my computer, so I could post it now. Thanks also to whoever fixed the problem.......
  6. I don't know. I should try it again- I will get back to you.......
  7. This is very interesting. I think maybe my view of the movie is a little different from some of you, but maybe I'm wrong. I get the feeling that you think that Roslyn is able to change Gay, nurture everyone, talk straight to ****, find Thelma's husband, and save everyone on the planet because she is emotionally open. I guess I feel very much that although these things do happen in the movie, it is not something that Roslyn sets out to do. She is mystified by the events that go on around her. She is open, but painfully so....it is a curse. There is nothing you can do when people around you rip into your vulnerability..... you just let them. Having no defenses, you just lie back and observe. You see the truth, but at a terrible price. She is sort of like a drop of vinegar poured into a bunch of baking soda. The vinegar is still just vinegar, but everything bubbles up around that little drop. And she gets burned every time. Wherever she goes, things happen. Roslyn cannot help the reactions people have to her. I think she is an open wound, and that makes some people, (maybe most people) want to hurt her - like her ex, and probably ****. But she is unable to change, and become hardened by her trials. This is terribly dangerous to a person's emotional makeup. If you cannot **** over, then you will just bleed to death. (Sorry for mixing my metaphors so badly.) She is just lucky that she finds Gay instead of ****.....because Gay is tough enough to keep her safe, and sensitive enough to understand her. Gay is lucky to find Roslyn, because she can see the real true part of his makeup- the hurt he feels about his kids, the sadness he feels about becoming an anachronism. She also appreciates his need to work things out on his own. Gay is the only one who can accept the truth when confronted by it. I DO think this role was completely Marilyn's personality- that she wasn't acting. I think that is why she had trouble coming to the set when making movies, because she was ripping herself open over and over again, and then totally defenseless when she was open. It's astounding the way she plays this role, without any guile or even the perception that she is acting. There is nothing betwen her and the character, and therefore nothing between her and the audience. But I am not sure she could continue to do this kind of thing for any longer than she did. There is only one of those performances in a person, I think.
  8. Sorry. Wrong thread, Jeff. I meant The Godless Girl.....I've seen The Crowd. It's a top favorite.....
  9. I haven't watched it yet, Jeff.... another sheepish grin...... I much prefer to watch the silent version, and I would watch a big grey rock wall if it had a score by Carl Davis. I am sure he would make it the most fascinating rock wall in the world....
  10. I guess now I really have to go watch some DeMille silents... since I haven't seen ANY.......(sheepish grin) Yes, the ladies are gorgeous in Ben Hur. But so are the boys! I remember the ending of Ben Hur so clearly- it is the most lovely, moving scene....
  11. They really should put out a Vidor box set.... it's only right. One of the finest directors of all time, especially in the silent art form, Vidor is actually one of the most fascinating people I can think of. I mean, what other director solved a murder case, 50 years after the fact?
  12. I've ordered from them too, Abe's is great.
  13. Jeff - the colors are just perfect... I think it's great! I can hardly wait for Bardelys myself. But I have a lot of Gilbert catch up to do until then, not to mention other silents by Conrad Veidt, Murnau, and some John Ford ones to watch as well....plus Prisoner of Zenda and I'd love to see Ben-Hur again- I was very impressed with it when I saw it years ago. The funny thing is, I was sure Ben-Hur was made by DeMille, and I have always held it up as an example of really great film-making. I figured that DeMille just sort of lost his art when he started making sound films. The 1925 film showed a restraint and reverence completely lacking in later DeMille films. Very moving. Well, I looked up the film the other day and discovered it was directed by Fred Niblo! You could have knocked me over with a feather! All this time I have given DeMille the benefit of the doubt based on this one movie, and it turns out he didn't have a thing to do with it! LOL! P.S. (I would never know the mistakes were there if you didn't tell me!) It looks like a highlight in his hair. Message was edited by: JackFavell
  14. I've loved this movie ever since I saw it when I was a young girl. I was just debating whether to buy it, when low, it shows up on my favorite channel, uncut and commercial free. And yes, Finlay Currie is marvelous as Magwich and I especially have a soft spot in my heart for Bernard Miles as Joe Gargery. Not to stray too far from the original subject, but has anyone seen Guinness in Little Dorrit? He made it in 1988, and I believe I read some reviews that said it was very good. I have never had a chance to see it.
  15. I think whenI was a kid, there were several of these books in our house- my sister had them. I believe she had The complete films of Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable and Humphrey Bogart.... maybe Garbo? Yes! I just found them on Amazon, and there is also an Ingrid Bergman. http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Films-Spencer-Tracy/dp/0806510382/ref=pd_sim_b_2
  16. It also comes up with the same message when I try to save a draft of my message, so I am completely stuck.... Anyone else having this problem?
  17. Oh my gosh! Those are a scream! The boots alone are worth taking a second look at ....not to mention the lovely Clara....
  18. Jeff, it's ridiculous that this will be the first Vidor silent out on dvd. Who would have thought that a semi-unknown lost film would be found, and put out before The Big Parade or The Crowd......
  19. Awesome! Thanks for the review.... Where did you get a copy?
  20. That's a riot, Kathy! Bronxie- In some weird way I actually like scrubbing the toilet. Maybe because it's one of the few jobs I can finish quickly?
  21. Every time I try to post a PM, a red message comes up informing me that I do not have "permission" to post PM's. Since I have been posting them for almost a year now, why can I suddenly not PM someone?
  22. Ro- I was just doing housework and turned the sound up loud at first to listen to the music (I love cowboy music). But then John Wayne said his first line to Maureen. He spoke very normally, and then dropped his voice to a lower pitch, all in one sentence. It made the words very intimate, though it was not a particularly romantic line. It made me look up. Again, it made me appreciate Wayne's acting. The rest of the movie was more of these highlighted moments. Ford, for some reason can do this to me better than anyone- make me look by pinpointing important events with a sound cue - the combination of sound and then sudden quiet.... contrast. It isn't always a musical sting that tells you that something important is going on.......
  23. Molo- Awesome ramble! You really hit the nail on the head- you were able to pick out the things that I was just scratching the surface of, and then you describe them with such intellect... I especially liked what you said about the scene in the car when Wallach is trying to barter for her affections. She just cuts through the BS with such a laser like intensity that it IS shocking. Her emotion and sensitivity, although a detriment, is also a gift..... it makes me wonder if she saw **** this way from the beginning, and was just trying to be kind to him, or if it suddenly dawned on her at that moment.... I would have to watch it again to se if I could figure that out. Frank also made a good point about **** losing Gay at the same time.... I think Wallach played **** with a lot of depth, as much as I hate the character, he really got it.**** knows from the beginning he is not going to win Roslyn, but he doggedly keeps on trying. Deep inside he feels he is a complete loser and he knows he can't compete with Gay, and I think he knows that even without Gay there, he still would lose out. So when she says that he's dead, and is absolutely right, the truth is shattering, and it sets him to try and prove that he's not.....
  24. Let us know how it is....
