I've always been curious about Sally Blane and her pictures. I too would love to see her films- I believe The Vagabond Lover was on recently, but I missed it... I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang I have seen and for the life of me, I can't remember her. She was also in The Story of Alexander Graham Bell, playing one of Loretta Young's sisters - a real stretch

Thomas Crown Affair?
-
I think gagman is correct, the one on the right is Young, left is Blane. I've always thought Sally Blane to be the prettier of the two......

Pancakes- I just love the picture of Adolphe Menjou with his hair all mussed up! I just adore it.

and Thomas Mitchell plays possibly the sleaziest character of his career. That sounds great! I always like to see a new Thomas Mitchell movie. I am going to go check it out.

I think there is kind of a small shock (or at least there was for me) in watching a very talented actor playing a villain (and a good villain at that!) after you have grown used to watching him playing mostly nice guys and heroes. It's a thrilling, pleasurable shock, though. I felt he "fit" this character better than the nice guys he usually played. He seemed much more natural and relaxed in this movie than any of the others I've seen. Those qualities make his being nasty harder to take but a more interesting man. Absolutely true! At the end, I actually cared about both characters. Even though his behavior is reprehensible, I still liked Glenn Ford, and I wanted to see his life change course....

Or as the butcher doctor in *King's Row*. I've been noticing a wealth of great performances on TCM today- some of my favorites include: from Mr. Deeds- Lionel Stander as "Corny" Raymond Walburn as Walter, the ever present and subservient butler John Wray as the hungry farmer who breaks down at Deed's mansion I noticed a bunch of wonderful actors in the background, including Gabby Hayes! from How to Succeed...... Rudy Vallee, who for some reason I love as a character actor. The more serious he is, the more glee I get from his performances. I adore him in The Palm Beach Story and The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer....He's a scream.... Maureen Arthur as Hedy LaRue Murray Matheson as Ovington, the Chipmunk all the company men

Ford at Fox... and RKO, and MGM, and WB, and Columbia...

The Last Hurrah has a great supporting cast- Edward Brophy as Ditto just slays me.... -
*Frieda Inescort as "Caroline Bingley" in Pride and Prejudice* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You've blown me away twice in 24 hours, Mr. Grimes. Saboteur has some wonderful performances in it! In fact, the bit players are the whole movie. Personally, I like Jean and Lynn Romer as the Siamese Twins who can't agree on anything. And Pedro De Cordoba. It also has Ian Wolfe, playing another butler...It's high on my list of fave Hitches. Otto Kruger is disturbingly smiley as Charles Tobin. Great choices. I can't believe I forgot Charles Coburn in The Lady Eve. I kept rolling his name around my head for "The More the Merrier", but I think yours is the better pick. Myrtle Mae is a super choice as well...

Ford's character has lots of fine qualities- he is smart, he is charming, and the way he treats Farr shows decency. Heflin has nothing but a bulldog determination to save his character. This is not particularly attractive, and seems almost ridiculous at points. He sometimes seems stubborn without any redemptive qualities. But there's a point in the movie where my opinion of them switched over- and I came to admire Heflin more than Ford. I can't remember the exact line. The gist of it was that if Heflin took the payoff, would Ford honor his commitment not to murder him? The way Ford delivered his cryptic reply, I suddenly knew without a doubt that he would kill Heflin if he took the payoff. This is Ford's finest moment as an actor. At that point, Ford's character recedes in my estimation, and Heflin's becomes much, much stronger. He knew all along that Ford was just a killer after all.

Cinemaven- when you're right, you're right! I don't have anything against Van Heflin, but sometimes he is so... well... boring. He works so hard! And Glenn Ford I have disliked since I first saw him. But somehow *3:10 to Yuma* really worked, thanks to these actors and a good script and a good director. You really hit the nail on the head here. I think it's the hurt underlying Ford's portrayal that I like- in fact, I think it is the only multi-layered performance I've ever seen him give. I love that he is way more attractive than Heflin ( I never thought I'd say that about Glenn). Our hero is pretty dull, but by the end, you realize why he is the HERO. Are they making movies of Romo already ? You'd think they were when you consider how much pub he gets. I just hope The Cowboy Quarterback isn't starring Brad Johnson and/or Brooks Bollinger. It's like a foreign language.

*Here's Looking at You, Kid: TCM School Fall Semester*

Wow. I am so out of my league. Frank, that was some powerful writing. The only thing I would (could) add is that a camera or binoculars obscure the voyeur's face- making us, the audience that much more uncomfortable.... -
Thanks, FF. I will do that. I noticed lately that I don't enjoy most of the commentaries that are on discs, but the bonus discs sometimes have interesting tidbits. I thought the commentary on the *M* disc was dreadful. The German guy was a bit interesting, but the other guy was awful. They were so concerned with the reality of German life at the time the movie was made, that they forgot to talk about the movie itself. Fine by me, I will just enjoy the movie and skip the "expert analysis". OK. I am really going now! I have to shove stuff in closets so at least it LOOKS like I cleaned today!
-
FF- I have The Big Red One high in my queue at Netflix. After the response here, I will definitely be watching it soon.
-
I will definitely watch *Pickup* first. It's one of the movies everyone on TCM talks about, and I need to know about it. I struggle to watch such films. It's a kind of compulsion, I think. I guess I just want to understand why? and there is no real answer to that. Are you trying to sweeten me up for the kill? Naw. You are sweet enough as it is. Just don't turn your back.... You are much better at getting back in the flow than I. NOT! I just get obsessed. I've been on here all morning, and I swore I wouldn't do that today.... So I am going to go and get something else done now.

The thing about Hudsucker is, you HAVE to be a classic movie fan to get it. That's why some don't like it, I think. For a long time it was my favorite Coen movie. I go back and forth between Barton Fink and this one, depending on how depressed I am...
-
I agree with Cinemaven. Your views are well written and enjoyable. Hope you do more than audit the class!
-
And if you do, I'm be worried because that would mean you liked three of my top ten classic films of all time. Tread lightly. That makes me worried, too. I was going to start my Sam Fullerfest with The Big Red One (I thought Lee Marvin might be a good draw for me) but it seems to be 163 minutes long and now I'm doubting that I should start there..... I'm also a sort of Holocaust movie freak. It's strange but I've seen almost all the Holocaust movies made. Except The Big Red One. Oh my gosh, did you just see the preview for Jewel Robbery? It looks great!

Thank you, Sportsfella. Nice to see you. Where have you been, anyway? I notice you have been "busy" lately.

*Saddafinga*.... chuckle.... Also Lina from Singin' in the Rain "What's the big idea? Am I dumb or something?" or "People? I ain't people."
-
Hey, the new one is out this next week, isn't it? Brad Pitt's hair makes me laugh in the preview.

I called hubby and he didn't know why they are showing all this football-y stuff on TCM. But he is not a total football freak he just likes playoffs and such. Thank you, Bronxie. I just had to get that off my mind. Sometimes it's crowded in there.... Speaking of minds, I could certainly use Dr. Jacquith here most of the time. He should move in. Parents and hubbies can be so difficult... I caught most of the Men Who Made the Movies, and enjoyed every minute. I still Love Raoul Walsh- now that's the man for me! His eyepatch was so sexy! I even want to see a Sam Fuller movie now. Hitch was the other director....
-
Very true, FF. I guess it's easy to complain, but really, I am just glad they exist! If they weren't out there making the crazy movies that they do, my world would be a sadder place. And besides, their worst is better than most.... Message was edited by: JackFavell

I was happy they had their day, it was wonderful. But I sure would have liked to see a couple silents- Big Business, Double Whoopee, Two Tars, and Liberty are my favorites.

I think Hudsucker played for two days at our theatre! I also saw it on the big screen- just beautiful. Maybe I should actually try The Ladykillers. I just love the other so much, I have a hard time imagining that I would get anything from it.... I also didn't like The Man Who Wasn't There. I felt they didn't have a fully realized movie there. There just wasn't anything to build a plot on, so it seems thin to me.
