  1. I have a cat story.

I am allergic, and we can't have cats. One day, after we moved into this house, I discovered a ratty looking grey (gray) long haired cat under my deck (which is about 10 feet off the ground). She was sunning herself and relaxing, watching the birds fly to and from our bird feeder. She never tried to hurt the birds or anything, just sat and watched from a deck chair. She started coming every day, and I looked for a collar but she had none.

Well, Fluffy looked really scrawny, so I started feeding her. Soon, she was showing up at breakfast, lunch and dinner, or any time I was cooking. My neighbor also started to see Fluffy at her door. In the morning, Fluffy would show up and start in meowing- and she had the most incredibly loud voice for a cat I've ever heard. She occasionally brought me mice she had found. I felt so sorry for this skinny cat, because I could not keep her.

One day, I met the neighbor's son from the end of the street, about four houses down from us. He crawled through a thicket and popped out into our yard because he wanted to play with my daughter. We discovered that not only was Fluffy their cat, but also that her name was Tabby. She had been scamming food from every neighbor on the block, coming down the street for breakfast, lunch and dinner at every house! We found out that she loved sliced american cheese, and even now, if we get the slices, we call it Fluffy cheese.

Fluffy kept coming until she got sick (she was 21 or 22 years old it turns out). She didn't come over for maybe a year. One day, we were out in the backyard, and Fluffy came walking slowly down into our yard. We were so excited and petted her and gave her some cheese. The next day we heard from her owner that she had died. She came to say goodbye.

Every once in a while I look out into the backyard and see a grey, long haired cat walking through our yard. I run down the twenty steps from the deck to find this cat, and it is never there when I get to the yard. This has happened about 4 or 5 times. I am starting to think it is the ghost of Fluffy.

  2. I'm planning on recording it tomorrow.

Let us know what you think. Most reviews I read said it is worthy of a second look, and that Sanders appearance is not as shocking as it was made out to be at the time the movie was released. One reviewer said it is a good depiction of the cruelty of the spy game... quite suspenseful. Some said it was muddled, but then it wouldn't be Huston if it wasn't complicated. :) Many said it was the darkest of the "spy noir genre". Almost all of the reviewers said it was definitely worth watching.

  3. Has anyone here seen The Kremlin Letter ? I wonder if George Sanders has a big or a small part. He's listed pretty far down in the cast list. The movie's going to be showing tomorrow on the FMC at noon ET, if anybody's interested

Aaaargh. I don't get FMC! I would love to see it.

  4. I was going to remark earlier on the gleeful way Hitchcock makes fun of his proper leading ladies and gentlemen with characters like Sanders' Favell, or Robert Walker's Bruno in Strangers on a Train. It is pure fun to watch them and makes me almost giddily happy (in a mean-spirited way) when I see either movie. The Jack Favell and Bruno characters are quite closely tied together in my mind for some reason. They are Hitch's way of satirizing our need for a happy ending, or a sappy love story. Favell is also used to show what I believe is Hitch's more complicated or even divided thoughts on love and marriage. Favell is attractive and easygoing, and his (and Rebecca's) sophistication seems de rigeur. But in the end, we feel a little sickened by his decadent manner. Sanders was a master at making you see a little rot inside the juicy red apple. And yet, because of Sanders' portrayal, I can't help feeling sorry for poor Jack, because he is so shocked and saddened at Rebecca's real story. How he does it I don't know, but I always feel that his sadness is at losing Rebecca, not at losing a bucket of cash. Favell will get by, no matter what. But I see him with a small streak of melancholy added to his character after this. I would give anything for there to have been many Sanders/Hitchcock collaborations.

There are some Sanders movies I have never seen that I am dying to... The Moon and Sixpence is one that I would just kill to see, and I have never seen either Death of a Scoundrel or A Scandal in Paris. Another I am supremely interested in is The Private Affairs of Bel Ami, which sounds really perfect for him. it seems that I have seen dozens of Sanders films, and only a couple are really good! But he rises above his material most of the time.

I bid on a copy of his album but didn't get it, and I am sorry and at the same time relieved that I didn't get it. Sometimes I think it is really cool in a kitschy sort of way, and other times it just seems kind of embarrassing that he made an album like this.

I don't know that I can really pick a favorite movie because some of his characters seem so connected to one another that it is like watching the progression of just one character's life. I agree that he was fantastic as the Saint, and as Addison DeWitt, and I really love his work in Foreign Correspondent and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. But I have to say that he makes a lot of the movies he's in worthwhile, like Samson and Delilah, or Assignment: Paris. I love the fact that, even to this day, there is always a cartoon on somewhere in which a voice artist uses George Sanders inflections to create a character.

  5. For some reason, I have always been intrigued by this name as well. I always think of him as the creative force behind the Astaire/Rogers musicals of the early thirties, and the look of said movies and the gorgeous sets. To me, the fairy tale world of Top Hat is the height of movie art design. I unfortunately know nothing of the man or how the studio worked at that time. I have always wondered why there are not more books on art direction, cinematography, and lighting design..... I am going to toodle around on the net and see if I can find out anything about our mystery man with the intriguing European name....I wonder if he was Hungarian?

  6. jackie, I believe you are Pisces rising, mysterious and allusive, creative and intuitive. You almost rebel against the depths of your emotions and feelings, and so turn inward more than is usual. You crave intellectual pursuits and want to keep relationships more on a detached level so you can control outcomes. You often weep by yourself for no reason alone in your room, but once you're out the door, no one would ever know the private agonies you suffer.

Your eyes are actually one of your best features, and people comment on them favorably. Underneath your cool exterior and sharp tongue lies a warm, caring, even saintly, person who would love to save the world.

:):) You amaze me! Its a little creepy how you got me... how do you do that? except for maybe the saintly part..... ;)

I think I need to start saving the world REAL soon.

These killer turtles are freaking me out! My daughter and I watched a show on Animal Planet in which a family had an overly aggressive turtle as a pet. They butt heads when they are getting ready to mate and so this explains why they will follow people, cats, dogs, etc. and try to sort of pound them or bite them. It's a mating display. So they brought in some experts to train the family and turtle. They gave him a new environment to rule over, and tried to make him feel safe by not letting the dog anywhere near him. By the way, it didn't work.....

And if you think that turtle was aggressive, wait till you see this one....

  7. What intrigues me is the remarkable powerful intellect and truly impressive talent this man

possessed, yet seemed to consider so carelessly. By several accounts, nothing interested

him half as much as dabbling with electronics (and catering to his own amusement). In everything

he seems to me to be the very embodiment of a true artistocrat, possessing all the

paradoxes inherent in such a creature. I think he was born out of his time, yet would probably

have been just as inclined to indolence in any century. ;)

Wow! I completely agree with you! That was so well said. He always said that he felt that he wasted his life in Hollywood, and that he should have tried to do more with his life. But the "aristocrat" label fits him like a glove, and a fine kidskin one at that. Everything about him seems to come from a different time- his deportment, his air of ennui, his manner of speaking- all suggest a great man undone by his lack of deep conviction....

When he delivers a line, you see that his mind has already raced ahead to hundred other ideas- and that he has discarded them all. That is quite a feat to achieve.

  8. MissG- My first boyfriend (no, he didn't look like Richard Basehart, sigh) from kindergarten had a snapping turtle that lived in a pond in his backyard. I always thought they were called Snapping turtles because they bite... I never went near the thing, it was at least a foot wide and long and terrified me.

  9. I love that picture of Sanders signing his book! Look at the face of the girl in the photo- she is just mesmerized.....

Sanders makes me smile every time he shows up in a film. I was turning the channel the other day, and *Rebecca* was on. I realized even more this time, that Sanders is the main reason I watch this movie.... It has a rather heavy atmosphere generally, and as soon as Sanders shows up, his light touch dispels gloomy thoughts immediately. The "Sanders" Touch! I just adore him because he makes me giggle at Olivier's "ACTING". I am sorry, I do love Olivier, but in this movie he was rather unfortunate in playing a character who is put upon, which makes him look a bit priggish. Sanders has the far more attractive personality, if only he weren't so callow. I find myself gleefully waiting for him to take the chicken leg out of the picnic basket, and I think that is a wonderful metaphor for his character- he is fox in the henhouse....

Sanders way with a line is so enjoyable that I find myself sitting on the edge of my seat toward the end, wanting him to remain on the screen longer this time. Can you imagine a spin-off with Sanders as the cad about town? I certainly can think of some great stories about whatever happened to Jack Favell....

  10. FF- Oh, yes. It was salmonella. People actually carry e -coli. Thanks for the info, it makes me feel better about getting a lizard or turtle for a pet.

Oh, Molo! Snappy sounds so cute! I would love to have a turtle just like him, but a forty year commitment seems a bit much. Maybe I better look into the age of smaller turtles or a **** toad.

And you ARE a great guy, taking care of your mom. My husband's mom is 78 and still in her own home. Andrew goes over there all week long to take care of the house, the lawn and whatever needs to be done. I know how much work it can be. We can really relate to the falling apart house! Andrew just finished putting a new ceiling in on her sun porch, since it was falling out.

  11. Awwwwww. I wonder if they carry e-coli....

My daughter, husband and I found a tiny turtle in a parking lot over the summer. We took him over to the side of the lot where the grass goes down to a pond so he wouldn't get run over. Ever since then, she has asked for a turtle. But they apparently can carry e-coli and I said we would have to investigate more fully whther they make good pets or not.

  12. Are you on the lean side? Do you have a fast metabolism? Can you eat what you want without gaining weight?

No. But I am not huge. I am the leanest in my family. Still, I have a very slow metabolism. I really have to kick start myself sometimes, and watch what I eat.

Do even your best friends and family really know you?

No, I don't think they do. I don't want people to know my "bad" traits. I like to present myself in a certain way. If I am depressed, I don't talk about it. Although eventually, I get mad if no one notices I am not my usual self. Wow. That sounds pretty passive aggressive....

Are you a very private person?

Yes, in some ways. Personal emotions are kept private, and I also need quite a bit of alone time. But I am ridiculously open about my personal life, and I do like to talk about things that people usually don't talk about...

Do you have many friends and thrive best in groups, or are you somewhat of a loner?

    Somewhat of a loner.

    Are your eyes o.k. now?

Perfectly. Except I need reading glasses lately....

  13. Doesn't Marcie wear Mary Janes? :)

I never would have pegged you as a Peppermint Patty or a Marcie... What traits would you say you have in common with them?

Re: Stuffed animals dancing while you sleep...... All the best parties are given by stuffed animals.....I wouldn't be caught dead at a human party anymore...

  14. Lucy is a strong girl with her own agenda that often gets exasperated by those not sharing her own world view. She's more vulnerable than she lets on. ;)

Molo, that was so sweet! I love that you wrote that, because I have always felt a definite liking for Lucy. I even identify with her at times.... probably most when I am being caustic and snotty... :)

    You almost made me cry.

  15. Are you super sensitive?

What do you mean by that? Are you implying something with that remark? :)

    In a word, yes.

Are you filled with the love of humanity?

    Yes.

Are you shy and retiring, or are you a people person?

I can be both. One day I can be quite shy, maybe not leaving the house. Another day, I might be outgoing and friendly to the point of annoying everyone around me. I think there is a clinical word for this: Schizophrenic....

Do you easily lose your temper, or do you sulk?

Lose my temper. But I never hold a grudge, and I can't stay mad for long.

    Are you passive-aggressive?

I try not to be. I come from a long line of passive-agressives...and I know every trick in the book. So I have no patience with it.

    Are you impatient?

    Not particularly. :)

    Do you enjoy speed?

I like it a lot if I feel safe with the driver or I am controlling the situation. Otherwise, no.

Do you like physical things, like sports?

I grew up without much physical activity, due to an eye operation at a young age and inactive parents who put more emphasis on brain power. But I do love to lose myself in either manual labor, or non-competitive sports. I would say I am definitely more on the cerebral side, though.

Do you live in the present or dwell on the past?

I would love to dwell in the past- just not my own. So, I think the reality is that I am more of a present dweller. Yes, in fact, I really hate to think about my own past....

    Are you abrasive or diplomatic?

I try to be diplomatic, and mostly succeed. But once in a while things come out all wrong. My family, unfortunately, get the more abrasive side of my nature. I can be caustic and snotty with people I love...

  16. I remember crying over the pitiful little Christmas tree no one wanted.

Do you always buy the Charlie Brown tree? Or the weird looking pumpkin at Halloween? Do you anthropomorphize inanimate objects? Do you find yourself ascribing human characteristics to the last lonely little tree on the lot?

    Psssst......I do it too.

Do you think maybe this guy was an Aquarius too?
