  1. I will start a food thread if you guys will chime in, but there will be no food fights, Frank
  2. Exactly what I thought. Maybe when Martha is killed, Ethan just hates himself SO much for never stepping forward for her, and wasting all that time- 3 years since the war ended..... and he sat and watched Aaron for years before that with her...while they raised their family. He came and went, but never really made an attempt to win her back. Maybe this is what eats him up inside. and all the hate he feels for himself is now directed at the men who killed her.
  3. Ted Weems is awesome. I am going to have to get a CD....
  4. Maybe Marty is Scar's son, one he thought was killed, but Ethan "rescued" him. As I am writing that, it doesn't really make sense. But it's fun to think about. I am inclined to believe that Scar's blue eyes have more to do with simply finding an actor who spoke the lines right, or who could keep up with Ford...... As for Ethan rescuing Marty, I think he had a conscience at one time, it's just been eaten away because of the losses in his life. Martha's was the straw that broke the camel's back. He finds his humanity again at the end, when he decides to take Debbie home. Do you think it was Marty's influence that made him rescue her? Or maybe just the physical contact with her made him see she was just a scared little girl? It seems to occur to him only at the very last minute....he was going to dash her up against the rocks and beat her head in, I think, but he couldn't do it, looking up at her. Maybe he saw Martha's face......
  5. Naw, I just tried to find a food picture - that's all I came up with.... pretty lame...
  6. No NO I will NOT Lick the wallpaper! (sound of feet stamping) strange how lickable wallpaper never really caught on.... Alright I'm done. I'm all Wonka'd out....You win, of course, with Butterscotch in your very name.....
  7. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. in *Prisoner of Zenda* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdbOf89RU1w
  8. That's`fantastic, MissG. Great information.
  9. You .... HATE....Chocolate? try the blueberry!
  10. That's sweet! Your grandma sounds great. I don't have a teapot cutter, unfortunately, cause I would love to make some. I thought the image looked like Jane Austen. Here have one of these instead......
  11. My mother used to bake snickerdoodles. I love them- you are so right. They are only good homemade.
  12. Marty, according to *filmsite.org* , was adopted by Aaron, after ETHAN saved him from slaughter in a raid on an Indian settlement. Why would Ethan save a half-breed child? He wants to kill Debbie just because she has touched an indian. There is another part I just remembered- when Ethan and Marty meet Scar, Ethan tells Marty that one of the scalps shown to them was Marty's mother's. Now was Marty's mother white? or was she an indian scalped by white men? I think the implication is that she was white..... in which case it is possible that Ethan's own mother was carried off by the Comanches, had another baby, and was killed. I think it would work.....why else would Ethan save baby Marty?
  13. Coopsgirl- you have a real gift! I love the music- again, is it Ukelele Ike? I especially loved the picture of Clara in her black dress.
  14. Super, super video! Those pics are great- his muscles rippling under that tuxedo! I especially liked the "Alibi Club" picture- it looks like he is just about to start laughing. Who does the song? It's wonderful. It sounds a bit like Ukelele Ike, but not quite.......
  15. Wow, Izcutter. I never thought of that! That's awesome..... I only just figured out that the gravestone Debbie hides behind says: HERE LIES MARY JANE EDWARDS KILLED BY COMANCHES MAY 12, 1852 A GOOD WIFE AND MOTHER IN HER 41st YEAR One of the problems of watching what should have been on a big screen on a dinky TV......
  16. I don't remember for sure, but I thought they were blue, too, for what it's worth. Jeffrey Hunter's eyes are certainly blue....
  17. That story is just great! I can literally picture Cooper saying, "Just wait a minute, I really like this part......" You made my day with that!
  18. Whstlingypsy- Thank you so much for your informative discussion of Max Linder. I have never seen a Max Linder film, except I seem to remember a short bit with Chaplin. I have been fascinated by photos of the comedian for years. I really appreciate your biography and the descriptions of his films. Thanks again.
  19. I love that you compared Ethan to Scar! It never occurred to me that they were alike, but of course you are right. They are two sides of the same coin......
  20. I wanted to respond to something someone said earlier in the thread- about Ford's women. It bothered me for some reason. That they wait, and wait, and wait, is true. At first glance, it seems anti-feminist, and the glorification of the waiting woman seems kind of ... well.... yucky. But in watching *The Searchers* last night, I realized why, as a woman, I never get upset at Ford for these images. Ford is so complex as a filmmaker that he not only realizes the inherent unfairness of these women's lives, he addresses it. Laurie, in *The Searchers* is an ideal character to show this. Laurie is waiting for her life to begin when we first see her, a quarter of the way through the film. Five years later, she is still just starting out on a new life. An essentially unlikable character at this point, she is shrewish and irritated (who could blame her?) most of the time. Perhaps Ford does glorify her a bit- the fact that she still loves Martin after all this time, when he barely took notice of her is seen as representative of pioneer strength. Still, she is not happy about it, and she is particularly vocal- this is the amazing thing to me. Any other movie of this time would have shown Laurie staring out the window, subservient, mellow, and voiceless. Ford gives his women a voice, and a strong voice at that, and that is what I love about him. Another thought, probably quite obvious. Does anyone else see John Wayne's performance in *The Searchers* as an almost verbatim portrayal of Pappy himself? His line readings and facial expressions remind me so much of the Peter Bogdanovich interviews with Ford. Terse, completely aware of his strengths, and just plain mean sometimes, Ethan still makes me cry at the end, as he is left to go on his way, alone. The scenes in which he makes fun of Martin, or uses Martin as bait, remind me of the stories of Ford's own practical jokes and his ridiculing of John Wayne on the set. Wait. Maybe Martin is the interior Ford- the sentimental, idealistic, hopeful Ford; and Ethan is the cruel, crotchety, but ultimately justice-seeking old man Ford. I don't know. Just some thoughts brought on by staying up too late......
  21. What's not to like? MDC is one of my favorite movies..... you've got great taste! Good luck with your mom. She sounds cool! I'd love to hear some more of her favorites. Sounds like you are giving her the best of the best to watch. If she doesn't like the older movies, maybe there is common ground somewhere in between. I'm happy to banter about old movies here and there with you. I don't get to talk about my movies much, because my friends are more into music. My husband is the one I try to sell on the old movies, but he just falls asleep. I think it's his way of escaping from my obsession. Come to think of it, he gets the same quizzical look on his face as my daughter when I am going on and on about gary cooper or whoever.... I am going off to bed now. Time was when I could stay up till 4 in the morning dancing, now I fall asleep at 10:30...... ah me oh my. I do like my sleep! Thanks for chatting! I really look forward to our little talks....
  22. My mom loved *The Quiet Man*. It was probably her favorite movie. I could never figure out why- till this year, and the discussions on the Fox thread!
  23. There's a thread somewhere about that- Coppola is refusing to let them release the new one or some such thing, I can't remember where I saw the info.....anybody remember posting about this? JackFavell is George Sanders' character in the Alfred Hitchcock movie *Rebecca*. I love George Sanders, so I took his name. The charming devil..... I will get back to you about the Brownlow series when I talk to my sis.... Thanks again!
