  1. That was one of the best tributes I've seen on youtube (except for the ones with Coopsy and Clara :) ) It was timed just right, and I found it interesting that I noticed the play of emotions on Thomas Mitchell's face a lot more in this video than when I'm watching the movie. It's amazing what happens when you take away dialogue.

You are in an awfully sentimental mood for someone who has been with Howard Hawks all day......

  2. mdffyx- my copy is from Jeff. I am happy to burn a copy for you, but mine would be a copy from a copy- I am not sure of the technology in this situation, but Jeff's might be a better copy.... I would love to do it, but maybe someone here can tell me whether a copy from mine would be inferior...?

  3. I just looked over the list (I almost hate to add another movie to it), but I don't think anyone has mentioned *M* by Fritz Lang. I just rewatched it, and found it to be very much to the topic.... I only quickly perused the thread just now- so forgive if I have listed this movie over again....

The voyeuristic quality of the movie at first extends to Lorre's stalking of his victims, then reverses, as the underworld characters ferret him out, they watch quietly, waiting for him to slip.... throughout the film, the camera remains the eye through which we see actions for which there are no words.... This would be high on my list of movies to discuss.....

  4. If you saw *The Mating Call*, you would never think she was a man.... she was very modern, and VERY sexy.....

She does have a firm chin, and a strong face, but so does Barbara Stanwyck....

  5. mdffyx- Thanks for posting the pictures from Applause. I especially love the poster. I am particularly excited to see these items because Applause is up next in my queue at Netflix, along with Hallelujah. I have never seen either and can't wait to get them, sometime in the next week. I have read about these movies for years!

  6. Jeff, I looked in some of my books and only found ONE pic of Dorothy Janis!!! it was too small and was from The Pagan with Ramon Novarro that you can find some pics of on the net. I can't believe it, because I know I have more pictures somewhere, in some book, because she really is memorable looking. Once you've seen her, you never forget it.....

I found this on the net.... I'm sure you probably already have it, and for some reason I can't crop the view images off of it...

  7. I read that Reed had a tough time finding Welles, because Welles was in some kind of financial dilemma at the time. Reed had to track Welles all over the continent, because Welles kept disappearing, thinking that creditors were after him.

There are some who say the fingers coming up through the grate are Reed's own.......

  8. Oh my gosh, guys, maybe I'm just hopelessly hooked on Chanel and twenties style right now (largely due to this thread), but I am predicting an all out resurgence of twenties style coming up in the next year - long strings of pearls, cloche hats and twenties style bobbed hair will be all the rage - and the dresses! oh, I can't wait. I certainly am going to find all the glad rags I can, so I, too, can have "IT"!

  9. I didn't realize it was already out on DVD. I might be able to go rent from Blockbuster, I haven't for a while but I think I still have a card somewhere.

I just realized that I have been misspelling Audrey Tautou 's name all day... I hate when I do that. I always pride myself on getting these things right. Pardon.....

  10. Luckily, I watched Saratoga Trunk at the same time I was taping it- My daughter was playing in the dining room, so I got to watch. My tape cut out just as Gary opened one eye from under the bandages, so it was really not so bad. I was more worried for Cupidon anyway.

I saw this movie years ago, but I read the book first. I loved the book so much that I went on a Ferber binge and read everything by her (except Cimarron, I think). None of the books came close to the enjoyment I got out of Saratoga Trunk. So Big was the last I read, and the book just stops.... leaves you hanging high and dry. I actually thought my book had been tampered with, so I got another copy to see, and that is just how the story ends. I got mad and didn't read any more Ferber.

  11. I love Trevor's stiff-upper-lipness- he represents the best part of the British nature. He just cracks me up saying really hot lines in that cool, English way - anyone else would go completely over the top with some of the lines he had to say....but not Trevor. He underscores really emotional scenes by making his voice flat and cool, but you know underneath he's seething. Love that.

  12. I was watching *The Fugitive* but I fell asleep- luckily I taped it, but I discovered this morning that my husband reset the clock on the DVR and I missed about one minute on the end of *Saratoga Trunk*... I am wondering if this happened to "The Fugitive" as well....I would hate to miss the very end.

I, too, was noticing the lovely clippity clop sound, and Armendariz's charisma. I don't think I was quite in the right frame of mind to enjoy this movie last night, though. Delores Del Rio's perfectly penciled eyebrows set me off first.... then the musical score that seemed to harangue me at every turn,. I kept having to turn the sound down, then back up to hear the dialogue.....so I willed myself to fall sleep. I will wait till school starts to watch when I am completely alone. Maybe I can appreciate the movie better when I don't have to turn the sound down so far because family is sleeping....

I am also taping *Rage in Heaven* today so I can see Uncle Neddy as a good guy. It's funny, because, reading the description at the TCM database, I would have thought the role of Philip was tailor made for Sanders.... of course I'm sure Robert Montgomery will be wonderful, anyway.... I wouldn't mind being fought over by those two.

  13. Minya- A friend of mine burned me a Radiohead CD and I haven't listened to it yet.... you are making me feel like I should go check it out. I know it will be good if Nick Cave's significant other recommends it.

P.S. I think you are quite the most sensible person I've run into on the subject of marriage. Enjoy your "me" time...

Bronxie- On the same subject, My husband and I realized yesterday that we are "the fat one and the thin one". We thought it was terrifically amusing that L&H day fell on our anniversary. Sad to say, our relationship is exactly like Laurel and Hardy's. I'm not saying which one I am.....but I will say that this is the kind of pithy self-analysis you partake in when you've been married too long.....

  14. Jeff, feel free to post them over in stars/movies 1900 to 1919. I sort of took it over since no one was posting there anymore. I was going to post some pics of Kathlyn Williams, and other serial stars, but we got sidetracked talking about Valentino's funeral..... so Tom Mix will be appreciated - by me anyway!

My sister had the Mix movies, I got the Bill Hart ones on my own. In fact, I think her first movie was a Tom Mix, given to her by my dad......but I can't remember which one.....Bill Hart's character appealed to me more, but I haven't seen a Tom Mix movie in YEARS. I think I need to go back and check him out. I also need to see a Bronco Billy movie- never have before.....

I wasn't sure what this thread was about before now- I didn't know if it was sort of pre-code, or early musicals, or 20's .... thanks for the heads up! I have been following this thread for some time, but never got around to reading the whole thing. It has been one of the most enjoyable threads I've read. Now I will start going back to the beginning and reading all the posts.
