  1. O.K. Please forgive me taking up space if this doesn't work. It's my first time posting a pic here, let's see how it goes.....
  2. Ooooh, Woody! drool...( content deleted due to it's unsuitable nature) Lovely pics- I like the "cherubs" of course, but Eugene Pallette makes my day! Here's a clip you should all be familiar with: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrj29NQMRrE
  3. Mon Oncle is my favorite. I can't believe I didn't think of Tati!
  4. John Qualen is absolutely one of my favorite actors (I keep saying that about everybody, don't I?) Really! My heart just breaks watching him in Grapes of Wrath. I have never seen Sgt. Rutledge all the way through. I always come in halfway when they show it on AMC - plus yucky commercials. I have a pet peeve about seeing a movie from beginning to end- I don't like to come in part way through, unless I've seen the movie before.
  5. You'll have to fight me for Pompey. He's so cute. How could Liberty not be great? It's got Woody Strode, Edmond O'Brien ( what a great job he does), Lee Marvin, Andy Devine, John Carradine, Jeanette Nolan, John Qualen, Strother Martin.... I could go on all day....
  6. I agree about the dolly shot, CineMaven. As I recall, it comes in from slightly above Scarlett and gets close enough to feel a little claustrophobic. Maybe it's just the depth of the shot that makes it feel that way. I also like the look on Vivien Leigh's face- her head is down, but she looks up under her eyebrows as if someone or something was pushing her down. We see Scarlett's fleeting emotions go from shame and irritation, then anger, then maybe self-justification? then resignation. Vivien Leigh had the nerve to play against the scene, choosing some opposing emotions that most others wouldn't think of.
  7. I hope I didn't give the wrong impression in my initial post. I didn't mean that the pics should just be MY favorites- please feel free to post pictures or talk about any of YOUR favorite bit players, character actors, etc.
  8. Oh, what great pics you guys! I love it. This website is the best. Chio- John Turturro was right, but in writing the thread I could not think of one other phrase that meant the same thing James Gleason is wonderful in every movie he was in, but to me he will always be Max Corkle in "Here Comes Mr. Jordan". I get all choked up now when I see him. I feel the same way about William Demarest since my dad introduced me to "Miracle of Morgan's Creek". Demarest does high kicks, gets irascible, and then turns surprisingly sweet two-thirds of the way through the movie. My dad (who is pretty irascible himself) and I both cry with joy every time we watch this ridiculous movie.
  9. No problem at all. I am new here, so I don't know how things work.
  10. Oh, Alice Adams has them all beat, hands down. What a sad little film! I agree that it is hard to watch, but I still like it tremendously. I think Hepburn gives one of her best performances in it. It makes me squirm to watch her lie to Fred MacMurray...
  11. That's prettyfunny, scsu1975. I don't have a problem with Metz, except that he does not keep track of his posts. I am new here and would love to play, but the 2 trivia games I answered never got a response. Please keep an eye on your posts, Metz, so we can enjoy the games.
  12. All right, FredC- how about in Jezebel, when Pres makes Julie go to the Olympus Ball in her red dress, causing everyone to shun them. They are left alone on the dance floor and when the music stops there is an uncomfortable silence. I don't know which is worse- the silence, or Henry Fonda's anger.
  13. Maybe you are looking for something else, but here goes.... When I read your post, the movie that immediately came to mind has a lot of dialog, but the last five minutes are silent. "Big Night" with Stanley Tucci and Tony Shalhoub has a wonderful scene at the very end. The boys (who play brothers) have had a huge fight, and it is the next morning. One by one the characters come into the kitchen, while Stanley Tucci makes scrambled eggs. It is the greatest scene in the movie, because no words are spoken for the remainder of the film.
  14. hlwdkjk- Thanks sooo much for the pics! Last night I was thinking about more character actors, and I thought of Mr. Pettibone (Billy Gilbert), so we are on the same wavelength. His scenes in "His Girl Friday" are the best in a movie full of great ensemble acting. MissG- Thelma Ritter is awesome! Can you imagine being in all the great movies she was in? I really can't believe that she never won an Oscar. My favorite Ritter performance (though it's hard to pick one) is in "All About Eve". Although she could crack wise with the best of them, I always see her caring heart underneath. Speaking of the ladies, I realize that I left out an important segment of the population.Being a solid, upstanding New Englander, I love Edna May Oliver's weird combination of common sense and insanity. Her portrayal of Aunt Betsey in "David Copperfield" is wonderful- her energy really takes the film to a higher level. Elsa Lanchester also springs to mind. Sometimes she is only in one scene. I'm thinking of "The Razor's Edge", in which she plays a secretary or librarian, I don't know. She made me laugh out loud, in a movie with no laughs at all. Her lascivious looks at Tyrone Power were probably not in the script!
  15. A lovely movie. Yes it has Peter o'Toole and Audrey, but I love Hugh Griffith as Hepburn's father.
  16. I wanted to write about character actors. I was going to call this thread "S.Z. Sakall, Oscar Homolka, and Felix Bressart...." then I realized that 2 of my favorite character actors were in Ball of Fire together (and I'm not even mentioning Richard Haydn, Henry Travers, Aubrey Mather, Tully Marshall, Allen Jenkins, Charles Lane, etc...) Felix Bressart was in the remake of Ball of Fire - A Song is Born. So I decided to change the title of my thread. I love character actors. When one of them shows up, it's like seeing a long lost friend. Someone you haven't seen since before the Great War. When ten of them are in the same movie, it is heaven! I only have to hear a particular voice (Pat Flaherty comes to mind) and I drop the dishes back into the sink, put my feet up on the coffee table and enjoy. So, I wanted to say thank you to John Qualen, Warren Hymer, Roscoe Karns and Abner Biberman. To James Gleason, Eugene Pallette, Rhys Williams, and Frank Morgan - I lift my New Year's glass high! Please feel free to post pictures. I don't know how, and I would love to see my favorites posted here.
  17. I love this cartoon- Thanks TCM!
  18. Do they ever show "The Light That Failed" on TCM? I remember seeing it once when I was a teenager, and I liked it very much. I still remember the shock I felt when Ida Lupino ....wait.... I don't want to give anything away.....I mean, what happens at the end!
  19. I think the best autobiographies are the ones chock full of stories about OTHER people. I am always a little disappointed when actors reveal themselves too much- some can come off as snotty, full of themselves, or just plain boring.
