OOH, thanksss for cluing me innnn. (my Kaaa voice). Joe's just great in TJB. It was his favorite movie that he worked on. Of course, he's got a great role! I missed *Four Feathers* too. John Clement is just wonderful in it.

Happy Holidays, Jake! I hope you and yours had a very merry Christmas! Wendy

*Cushlamocree!* You know Barnaby!

Here's mud in your eye!

h1. *Happy Holidays, everyone!*

I knew it! I knew he'd be hooked if he just watched the beginning.... the movie starts out like a Val Lewton horror film, and ends up being about pretention, selfishness, love and mistaken "expectations". Right up his alley!

Ha! How true! giggle

Whenever I watch the fifties version, I always wish they had shown the Colman one instead.
-
Merry Christmas to you and your family too, Jake!

Yeah, but now I'll have to watch it over again to remember that it wasn't very good in the first place.

They couldn't even show all of his talkies, so I guess I am not surprised that they didn't show his silents. It's too bad. I was looking forward to more obscure Powell films, but was happy to see some precodes. So sad about SO BIG. That's a real shame. I just watched *Miss Sadie Thompson* and was wishing the end part of the film would turn up somewhere. What a great movie, and yet, the climax and the entire end of the film was missing. So Gloria's best silent performance (according to some critics) doesn't actually exist either. Or Lionel Barrymore's.

I used to have a copy of *The Toll Gate*, but I'll be dadgummed if I can remember any of it.

This is our favorite Frankie Christmas song lately. My daughter just loves it.

Isn't he a hoot? I thought of Lloyd too, but Powell's expression gives it his own spin. I would LOVE to see Colleen as the heroine in SO BIG... I didn't know she had a version of the story - only 8 or ten years later Stanwyck would be playing the part which is good, but a bit of a stretch for her. I think Colleen would be far more suited to the role. Is this film still available?

Oh, Ro, it's so yummy! I just take the softened squash halves out of the microwave, mush the yellow squash right in the skin with a little butter and sugar, then fill em up with the rice and sausage. It's one of my favorite taste treats. I love that savory and sweet combo too. My microwave is pretty small, so it takes at least 15 minutes or so to cook the squash. I check it periodically, just feel the outside of the squash to see if the skin has gotten soft yet, then take them out when the halves are good and soft.

I have a rice dish I make in autumn, I made it up myself (the only recipe I have ever created myself) but I am sure other people have probably come up with this combination before - it's so good! Stuffed Acorn Squash It's terribly simple. I take an acorn squash and halve it. You can pierce the skin all over and stick it in the microwave, seeds and all, and it cooks much faster. But I prefer to halve it and take the seeds out before hand. It's harder work, but to me, the flavor is better cooked without the seeds inside. It's also a bit of a trick to hold onto a hot squash to cut open and scoop out the seeds once it's all soft. You could also start a bit earlier and put the squash in the oven, the halves upside down in a pie plate or wide flat casserole dish, in about an inch or two of water. Or you could roast it. I am not that patient anymore, since I usually end up thinking of this recipe at the last minute. While it's cooking, I open a box of Near East Rice Pilaf with Almonds, and follow the directions. It takes twenty or so minutes, and all you need is a little pat of butter, and some water. While the squash and rice are cooking, I cook up some breakfast sausage in a pan, the kind that comes in a roll, and break it up into tiny bits. I prefer them to large chunks, but to each their own. Oh, and I like to taste the acorn squash after it's cooked. Try to get the darkest green squash you can, preferably with no orange spots on it. It should be pretty sweet on it's own. If you have an older squash, they can be pretty flavorless, in which case I add a little butter and sugar on top and mash the squash inside the outer shell. I usually mash the squash anyway, it makes it easier to get it out, and it mixes well with the rice filling that way. When everything is cooked, I combine the rice and sausage, and fill the acorn squash with it, mounding the rice mixture up inside. Some usually falls on the plate around it but that's ok, I'm a messy cook and these things don't matter to me. It makes a delicious fall meal. Edited by: JackFavell on Dec 17, 2011 9:46 AM

Rey, that ws beautifully told. I am glad you have two such wonderful women in your life, even if you lost one of them. You should be very happy that you have a wife like Annie. Give her a hug from me.

You said that far better than I could have, JJG! I find their music simple but complex, if that makes sense, and always interesting, whether it's the early stuff or the later.

Molo! We've missed you so much! I liked seeing Jack Carson as a bad guy. His image as a big, goofy nice guy really played well turned on it's ear like this. Not only do we have preconceived notions about Jack, but the town had preconceived notions about Hoak. Hoak used that "everyone's buddy" image in order to get away with murder, literally, and Carson used our own feelings about his image to turn in a deeper, more sinister performance. Oh, how smoothly he was able to turn on that "sincere" bit during the trial, saying why he thought of Chandler as a friend! I almost fell for it, and I knew the truth. That scene just showed what a great actor Carson was. I've seen him as a slimeball before, the type to try and get away with something, or like Gooper, a kind of smarmy guy who thinks he's pulling the wool over someone's eyes, and hasn't any convictions, but I've never seen him as an out and out villain before. It suited his talents. He was always able to dig a little deeper in his serious roles - there is something kind of scary underlying them. The dark side of the good-natured party boy. And yes, George Tobias had the big x marked on his forehead for me - the mark of death just as visible as the sign of the pentagram..... As for Gail Russell, she's another who adds depth to each characterization. She's so lovely, frail and so sad underneath, but is able to use it to create such memorable performances. I didn't realize how soon after this movie she was gone. Edited by: JackFavell on Dec 16, 2011 9:39 AM

I am going to try both the chicken and pasta salad and the duchess potatoes! YUM!!!! That song explains why there is so much finger chopping at your house, SF. I could never chop potatoes to that - I might lose a whole hand....

Oooh I love those! I really like Herbert Rawlinson's looks. Look what I just found. Our star of the month:

You're doing better than I am. I've only seen Eyes of Youth, in which she was an uncredited party guest! Her films may not be much available, it's not like she is well known, so if someone found her films in the last 20 years, they could have easily dumped them without even thinking. Most people would look for a "big name" when perusing old films, and if they didn't find one - pfft. Of course, in her time, she was a big star....but even I recognize few of her titles.

OK. It didn't seem to hurt Claire Windsor's career any - she appeared in 5 movies in 1925, then only 3 in 1926, but she really takes off in 1927, with a whopping 7 pictures!.
