*Contraband* is good, a little scattered, but lots of fun - watch it especially for Veidt - he's wonderful. I bet I know what you are going to say about it!

I was thinking how hard it was to imagine Jeanne feeling awkward or less pretty than anyone! But she pulled off that gawkiness perfectly - a real acting job.

Oh, my gosh, Shere Khan, the voice of my childhood.... along with Phil Harris! No wonder I feel so personally about George Sanders now, like I've known him all my life.... I have!
Sabu is also someone I've always known - the only classic film on much in Oklahoma when I was growing up was *The Thief of Baghdad* , so I got to know Sabu very well. I like his naughtiness in that one, even more now that I am grown up. He's is just marvelous in all his movies, I totally agree. He was an incredible natural actor - that scene in JB where he is scared by the torch fire in the village, his wolf cries and the terror on his face are unmistakably doggie in nature. It's a brave actor who can fearlessly bring out the animal in himself. I saw *Drums* once before and thought it was pretty un-PC, but Sabu was great. Valerie Hobson is an actress who is going further and further down in my estimation as I see more of her movies. She's always the same, no matter the role. Her starchiness has begun to wear on me, and the way she is always presented as the picture of British womanhood bugs me. Heaven help them if that's their idea of perfection.

I think it's so sad when Mowgli's mother doesn't remember him later, like she is in denial that this scrawny, scary scarred up wolf boy could be the same child as her son, Natoo, or is that Naatu?
I like Joe's shirt with the shoulder slit open - even with his beard hiding his face, he's got a nice lean looking neck and body.

OOH, thanksss for cluing me innnn. (my Kaaa voice).

Joe's just great in TJB. It was his favorite movie that he worked on. Of course, he's got a great role!
I missed *Four Feathers* too. John Clement is just wonderful in it.

I knew it! I knew he'd be hooked if he just watched the beginning.... the movie starts out like a Val Lewton horror film, and ends up being about pretention, selfishness, love and mistaken "expectations". Right up his alley!

Ha! How true! giggle

Whenever I watch the fifties version, I always wish they had shown the Colman one instead.

Merry Christmas to you and your family too, Jake!
-
Yeah, but now I'll have to watch it over again to remember that it wasn't very good in the first place.

They couldn't even show all of his talkies, so I guess I am not surprised that they didn't show his silents. It's too bad. I was looking forward to more obscure Powell films, but was happy to see some precodes.
So sad about SO BIG. That's a real shame.
I just watched *Miss Sadie Thompson* and was wishing the end part of the film would turn up somewhere. What a great movie, and yet, the climax and the entire end of the film was missing. So Gloria's best silent performance (according to some critics) doesn't actually exist either. Or Lionel Barrymore's.

I used to have a copy of *The Toll Gate*, but I'll be dadgummed if I can remember any of it.

This is our favorite Frankie Christmas song lately. My daughter just loves it.

Isn't he a hoot? I thought of Lloyd too, but Powell's expression gives it his own spin.
I would LOVE to see Colleen as the heroine in SO BIG... I didn't know she had a version of the story - only 8 or ten years later Stanwyck would be playing the part which is good, but a bit of a stretch for her. I think Colleen would be far more suited to the role. Is this film still available?

Oh, Ro, it's so yummy! I just take the softened squash halves out of the microwave, mush the yellow squash right in the skin with a little butter and sugar, then fill em up with the rice and sausage. It's one of my favorite taste treats. I love that savory and sweet combo too.

My microwave is pretty small, so it takes at least 15 minutes or so to cook the squash. I check it periodically, just feel the outside of the squash to see if the skin has gotten soft yet, then take them out when the halves are good and soft.
-
I have a rice dish I make in autumn, I made it up myself (the only recipe I have ever created myself) but I am sure other people have probably come up with this combination before - it's so good!
Stuffed Acorn Squash
It's terribly simple. I take an acorn squash and halve it. You can pierce the skin all over and stick it in the microwave, seeds and all, and it cooks much faster. But I prefer to halve it and take the seeds out before hand. It's harder work, but to me, the flavor is better cooked without the seeds inside. It's also a bit of a trick to hold onto a hot squash to cut open and scoop out the seeds once it's all soft.
You could also start a bit earlier and put the squash in the oven, the halves upside down in a pie plate or wide flat casserole dish, in about an inch or two of water. Or you could roast it. I am not that patient anymore, since I usually end up thinking of this recipe at the last minute.
While it's cooking, I open a box of Near East Rice Pilaf with Almonds, and follow the directions. It takes twenty or so minutes, and all you need is a little pat of butter, and some water.
While the squash and rice are cooking, I cook up some breakfast sausage in a pan, the kind that comes in a roll, and break it up into tiny bits. I prefer them to large chunks, but to each their own.
Oh, and I like to taste the acorn squash after it's cooked. Try to get the darkest green squash you can, preferably with no orange spots on it. It should be pretty sweet on it's own. If you have an older squash, they can be pretty flavorless, in which case I add a little butter and sugar on top and mash the squash inside the outer shell. I usually mash the squash anyway, it makes it easier to get it out, and it mixes well with the rice filling that way.
When everything is cooked, I combine the rice and sausage, and fill the acorn squash with it, mounding the rice mixture up inside. Some usually falls on the plate around it but that's ok, I'm a messy cook and these things don't matter to me. It makes a delicious fall meal.

Rey, that ws beautifully told. I am glad you have two such wonderful women in your life, even if you lost one of them. You should be very happy that you have a wife like Annie. Give her a hug from me.

Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.

You said that far better than I could have, JJG! I find their music simple but complex, if that makes sense, and always interesting, whether it's the early stuff or the later.
