If Peter O'Toole knew you were 'slobbering' this thread that started out as a comment on his interview, I believe he'd start drinking again.

I don't know what you're leading up to, but my feelings about TV movies are that TCM should show them. I think there are plenty of good ones that I would say are better than some of the crap that gets released to the theaters. I for one would enjoy the "Columbo" movies.

If you look at the options along the top border of TCM's webpage, you'll see where it shows "SCHEDULE". Click on this and it will bring up the schedule. Go through the schedule to the movie you want to be reminded about and 'Expand' on that and inside there will be an option for reminder. Click on Reminder and it will bring up a seperate window for you to enter your email address then submit and you will get a reminder one week before and one day before the movie is scheduled.

Apocalypse Now: Theatrical or Redux? VOTE!
aimalac91748 replied to OHMSS69's topic in General Discussions
Like ValentineXavier it has been a long time since I've seen either cut, but I do remember it was the 'Redux' version that I preferred. I believe the studios often try to cut films down to perhaps get enough time cut out to accomodate at least one more showing per day in the theaters thereby generating more ticket sales and more profits. Anytime there is a Directors Cut, you know the new cut is what the director envisioned and not what the money men want. -
Every Christmas season TCM's Programming Dept. gets requests for the title "It's A Wonderful Life" starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore and Henry Travers. TCM doesn't have the rights to "It's A Wonderful Life" and probably won't obtain those rights anytime in the near future. There is a 'made for TV' movie out there titled "It Happened One Christmas" from 1977 starring Marlo Thomas playing a female version of the Jimmy Stewart character and Wayne Rogers playing a male version of the Donna Reed character. Orson Welles plays the Lionel Barrymore character and Cloris Leachman plays the female angel of the male angel played by Henry Travers. The stories are basically the same with the exception of the male/female reversal.

Here's another with a slight twist. The 1990 movie "Mr. Destiny" starring Jim Belushi as a middle aged man not satisfied with his hum-drum boring life married to a loving Linda Hamilton. Michael Caine shows him what his life could have been like married to the wealthy beautiful Rene Russo. But with all the wealth, come loads of problems and he realized his mediocre life was what he really wants. Then there's the daily double film "The Family Man" from 2000. Nicolas Cage is a wealthy investment banker with everything he could possibly want until Don Cheadle shows him an alternate life path where he is married to Tea Leoni and working and struggling to make ends meet. It is clear that Cage would prefer the hard-working married to Tea Leoni life over the wealthy investment banker life but doesn't get to keep that path he would prefer.

How would the 1964 classic "Bedtime Story" starring Marlon Brando, David Niven and Shirley Jones and a remake from 1988 titled "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" starring Steve Martin, Michael Caine and Glenne Headly work as a 'Daily Double'?

It's a shame TCM's programming staff had two opportunities to pay tribute to that great actor Leo Gorcey. June 2nd is the anniversary of his death, and June 3rd is the anniversary of his birth.

Has anyone noticed the 23rd is loaded with Natalie Wood?

Shoddy scheduling is a sign of incompetence and laziness.
aimalac91748 replied to aimalac91748's topic in General Discussions
You people really are the ultimate in incompetence. I'm referring to this mornings 'BLUNDER' Virginia City. How do you schedule a 121 minute movie into a 120 minute time slot? Are you living in some other dimension where time is different? I pay way to much money for cable service that TCM gets their share of and all I ask is that somebody be competent enough in their job to be able to schedule correctly. I'm just one step away from just saying the hell with cable and TCM and just subscribe to some online movie service like Blockbuster and/or Netflix. Believe me when I say, TCM is doing me no great favor. TCM can easily be replaced by either of those online movie providers and with that, I'd be able to choose which movies I want to see, when I want to see them, and if I want to view them only once, I can schedule it once and not schedule it again until I want to view it again. -

aimalac91748 replied to aimalac91748's topic in General Discussions
If TCM's programmers are going to continue to program movies that overflow into the next features timeslot, why don't they do the simple thing and instead of always scheduling movies to start on the hour, quarter hour, half hour, and three-quarters hour schedule them to start at 5, 10, 20, 25, 35, 40, 50, and 55 minutes of the hour. Don't say TCM has a long time tradition of scheduling movies on the 00, 15, 30, 45 minute mark. You've already broken TCM's long running tradition of not having programs overflow into the next time slot, so breaking another tradition should be no problem. This happens way to often and I'm referring to this past weekends showing of "Honeymoon Hotel" as this latest infraction. -
I can understand why Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart would be featured so often, but for the life of me, why has Dean Martin been snubbed?
-
Thank you, LonesomePolecat for the vote. It's good to find someone that enjoys Dean Martin. I know this will stir up some debate, but I think Dean Martin is the closest to Cary Grant as there is, and even outdoes Cary Grant in many ways. He makes everything he does look like he's having so much fun and he can sing better than Cary Grant.

Capuchin, I agree. The writting's the thing. My personal favorite is Damon Runyon. I liked your Doomsday theme. I knew there are a lot of 'disaster'/'destruction' movies, but you managed to find even more. I'm personally looking forward to 12/21/2012. Good theme, Good schedule, and Good recognition of where the whole process starts.

I chose a week in August that features "Summer Under The Stars" because it seemed the easiest theme. Just pick a star and showcase his/her movies for the day. My "Star Of The Month" is 'Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis'. Their body of work only consists of 17 films. 16 of those films, they were a significant part of the story. One (Road To Bali) they basically just had a cameo appearance. That leaves 4 films a week for 4 weeks. The remainder of the month Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis will alternate being featured and where appropriate they will introduce the featured 'Summer Under The Stars' star with a movie they shared credits. To begin, Sunday August 12th Dean Martin will play the role of 'Star Of The Month' and Peter Falk will be the showcased 'Summer Under The Stars' star and "Robin And The 7 Hoods" will be the movie Dean Martin and Peter Falk shared. Also Peter Falk is the new Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actor for his role in "Pocketful Of Miracles" replacing the former winner 'George Chakiris' for "West Side Story". Peter Falk will also be the star of my 'Foreign Import' from Germany "Wings Of Desire" (1987). Silent Sunday Night will be the 1925 silent classic "Sally Of The Sawdust" with the funniest W.C. Fields. Monday August 13th, the comedy team of "Martin & Lewis" will assume the role of 'Star Of The Month' and Janet Leigh will be the featured 'Summer Under The Stars' star and she will receive an individual introduction from both Dean and Jerry. First from them as a team in "Living It Up" then Dean will share the credits with her in "Who Was That Lady?" then Jerry will share credits with her in "Three On A Couch". Johnny Green will be the new Academy Award winner for Best Music, Scoring Of Music, Adaptation or Scoring for "Bye-Bye Birdie" replacing Andre Previn for "Irma La Douce". Tuesday August 14th Jerry Lewis will be Serving as "SOTM" and introducing Robert DeNiro as the "SUTS' star with "The King Of Comedy". Wednesday August 15th Dean Martin will be taking over as "SOTM" and introducing "SUTS" star Kim Novak with "Kiss Me Stupid". Also Gary Kurtz will receive the Best Picture Academy Award for "Star Wars IV - A New Hope" replacing Charles H. Joffe for "Annie Hall". George Lucas will receive the Best Director Academy Award for "Star Wars IV - A New Hope" replacing Woody Allen for "Annie Hall" and George Lucas will receive the Academy Award for Best Writting, Screenplay Written Directly For The Screen instead of Woody Allen and Marshall Brickman for "Annie Hall". I'll admit "Annie Hall" is a good movie and Woody Allen is an incredible talent, but "Annie Hall" is no "Star Wars IV - A New Hope". Also Jack Warden will receive the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for "Heaven Can Wait" replacing Christopher Walken for "Deer Hunter". Thursday August 16th Jerry Lewis is now "SOTM" and he introduces "SUTS" star Stubby Kaye with "Li'l Abner". Thursday evening I will serve as Guest Programmer and the four films I chose are: Mr. Destiny (1990) with Jim Belushi and Michael Caine in a 'What would life be like if...?' Family Man (2000) with Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni in another 'What would life be like if...?' The Final Countdown (1980) with Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen in a 'What would todays world be like if...?' Off Limits (1953) with Bob Hope and Mickey Rooney in a military comedy. Also Dustin Hoffman is the new winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for his performance in "Midnight Cowboy" replacing John Wayne in "True Grit". Friday August 17th Jerry Lewis is doing double work as "SOTM" again today but Tony Curtis is now the "SUTS" featured star and his introduction is Boeing (707) Boeing (707). My TCM UnderGround feature is the 1978 Ralph Bakshi animated version of the J.R.R. Tolkien classic "The Lord Of The Rings". As an added note, the movie after TCM's UnderGround feature could also be an excellent selection for TCM's UnderGround, The 1956 Edmond O'Brien, Jan Sterling, Michael Redgrave version of the George Orwell classic "1984". Saturday August 18th has Dean Martin once again as "SOTM" and the "SUTS" star Judy Holliday. TCM Essentials is "Bells Are Ringing" and it features both the "SOTM" Dean Martin and the "SUTS" star Judy Holliday. Star Of The Month: Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis (as a team and individually). Theme: Summer Under The Stars Sunday: Peter Falk Monday: Janet Leigh Tuesday: Robert DeNiro Wednesday: Stubby Kaye Thursday: Kim Novak Friday: Tony Curtis Saturday: Judy Holliday Silent Sunday Night: Sally Of The Sawdust (1925) Foreign import: Wings Of Desire TCM UnderGround: The Lord Of The Rings (1978) Guest Programmer selections: Mr. Destiny (1990) The Family Man (2000) The Final Countdown (1980) Off Limits (1955) TCM Essentials: Bells Are Ringing (1960) New Academy Award Winners: Peter Falk Best Supporting Actor "Pocketful Of Miracles" Johnny Green Best Music Scoring Of Music Adaptation or Scoring "Bye-Bye Birdie" Gary Kurtz Best Picture "Star Wars IV - A New Hope" George Lucas Best Director "Star Wars IV - A New Hope" George Lucas Best Writting Screenplay Written Directly For The Screen "Star Wars IV - A New Hope" Jack Warden Best Supporting Actor "Heaven Can Wait" Dustin Hoffman Best Actor "Midnight Cowboy" Premieres: 01. I then checked old emails of TCM's schedules and upcoming schedules I found that these titles had previously aired on the date and time indicated. So what is the most frequently shown movie on TCM?
aimalac91748 replied to slaytonf's topic in General Discussions
That's quite an impressive list. Imagine how many times they'd be shown if HBO or Showtime or Starz owned the rights. I have to agree they are shown quite a bit, and what makes it seem more than it actually is, is the fact that everyone probably already owns their own copy of those movies. I know I would prefer seeing other movies in TCM's vault, but to be honest, I could never get bored watching any of those movies. You might want to add: "Yankee Doodle Dandy" and "Seven Days In May" to that list. I remember many years ago complaining about how many times 'Citizen Cane' and 'Rebel Without A Cause' and 'High Noon' were shown and the next thing I knew is they stopped showing them so often, but now it seems 'Rebel Without A Cause' is making its comeback. -
How to tell if a film scheduled to be shown on TCM?
aimalac91748 replied to wadial's topic in General Discussions
I was just checking some titles yesterday and it was working. What you need to do is search on the movie title in TMCDb and it will bring up a list of movies that match your search. Check this list of matched movies and click on the one that best matches the title you want. Along the top will be a banner with the title and year of the movie. If the movie is scheduled, the date and time will be there along with a request for an email reminder. If there is no schedule or email reminder then the movie isn't immediately scheduled. I checked on some that were scheduled to show this coming May, and the May schedule isn't even posted yet. -
I'm familiar with what letterboxing is basically, but why is it sometimes there is such a small top and bottom banner that the movie almost appears full screen? And other times there is a thick top and bottom banner? One example that I can remember is Rebel Without A Cause. Once I've seen it with a small top and bottom banner and another time with a large top and bottom banner. Is that my television settings? or is it the broadcaster showing it differently?

TCM does have a 'reminder' feature. What you need to do is go into the 'Full TCM Schedule' from the schedule section on the TCM sites top banner. Once you're in the schedule it show the movies listed. On the right portion of the list is an 'expand' option. You click on this 'expand' option and it opens up details of the movie. Along the bottom of these details is one option for 'reminder'. You click on 'reminder' and it brings up a seperate window for you to enter your email address and submit. It will remind you one week and then one day in advance. -
If this is aimed at only big screen private detectives, then I have to disqualify myself. But if this is open to TV and detectives on the police force, then I have to cast for vote for the one detective that always outwits the cleverest criminals, and that would be Peter Falk's "Columbo".

I also enjoy Peter Falk. I think his best performance was in "Pocketful of Miracles" where he was nominated for Best Supporting actor (He will be awarded the Academy Award in my programming challenge submission). He also was great in "Robin and the 7 Hoods".
