  1. He is without a doubt, the most underrated actor from the golden age. He had top billing over some of his more celebrated contemporaries, like Carole Lombard and Cary Grant. He played Mark Twain, Christopher Columbus, and Dr. Jeckyll. He had five nominations for best actor, while winning two oscars. Out of all the actors from that era, he is the one that has the least of his movies on dvd. The best thing that can be said about Fredric March, was that he was held in high esteem by his peers. In terms of talent and versatility, only Spencer Tracy, Paul muni, and Laurence Olivier could match him for his range.

  2. I think Turner classics should have 2 channels. The main one, for movies from the silent era to 1960. Then, the second channel could feature movies from 1960 to 1990. I think it should be done this way, because there was an enormous number of movies made during the golden age, that are rarely shown on TCM.

  3. Edward G. Robinson, Maureen O'hara, Betty Grable, and Glen Ford. These are some of the actors and actresses, who incredibly, never were nominated for Oscars. Is that a travesty or what! Do this:

1)Name your favorite actor or actress who should have earned a nomination.

2)Identify the role that should have garnered them the nomination.

3)Identify the actor or actress who in your opinion, should not have been nominated at the expense of the actor you selected.

  4. On the digital bits website, a spencer tracy collection is rumored to be under preparation for a release sometime this year. What are the titles you are hoping will comprise the set? I'm hoping these titles are released:

1)20,000 years in sing-sing(1932)- with Bette Davis.

    2)Mannequin(1937)

    3)Edison the man(1940)

    4)A guy named Joe(1943)

    5)The seventh cross(1944)

  5. With so many great roles, can you pick the one where he was at his best? Many will automatically think Casablanca. I, on the other hand, think he was at his best in the treasure of the sierra madre. The scenes where he attempts to kill Tim holt's character were amazing! Its a travesty that he was not nominated for an oscar for this performance.

Well, what do you think? What was his best performance? The african queen? The Maltese Falcon? Sabrina? The caine mutiny? Let the debate begin!

  6. I hate when they try to remake a classic. Often times, it fails. However, I plan on seeing this movie when it comes out in october of this year. I will only watch it to compare the performances of the new cast, versus the original. I am already on record as saying that it will not be as good as the original. It likely will do well in the box office, because of the big names. Unfortunately, I'm skeptical of the casting. Meg Ryan in Norma Shearer's role? Ryan is nice, but she is no Norma Shearer! Eva Mendes has the unenviable task of reprising Joan crawford's role. Debra Messing is slated to play Rosalind Russell's character. Messing is cute, but she is not in Russell's class.

What's your opinion? Will you see it? Compare the new cast versus the legends in the original.

  7. If you go to thedigitalbits.com, they have a classic attractions database. In it, those ginger rogers movies are in some form of preparation. Also, if you do a google search on warner home video chat transcripts, you will find an executive from warner who confirmed this. Vivacious lady should be released sometime this year!

  8. They are already legends, but one can't help wonder how many more classics they would have done, had they not died prematurely. Lets speculate: If they had reached their prime, what do you think would have happened?

    1)Would they have won oscars?

2)Would they have prevented the rise of other stars from their era?

3)How different would Gable's career have been?

4)How different William Powell's career would have been?

If you can think of other outcomes, lets hear it!

  9. Very well put. Like I said, I love Greer Garson. She was so charming in one of my favorite movies, Goodbye Mr. Chips. I agree, she is the most underrated actress from the golden age of hollywood. The fact that only Greer and Bette were the only actresses in history, to be nominated for an academy award in five successive years, validates her legend. Hopefully, Valley of decision, and blossoms in the dust, will be released on dvd! Thanks for your input.

  10. She has such legendary status. She was only 33 when she died, so she never reached her prime. Imagine how astounding her body of work would have been had she not died so prematurely! My favorite performance of hers, is with James Stewart in 1939's Made For Each Other.

  11. I think any movie that is a remake of a classic, is a waste of time. Case in point: The scheduled remake of the 1939 classic, The Women. The actresses in the remake are far inferior to Shearer, Crawford, Russell, Goddard and Fontaine. Hollywood needs to have more ingenuity, and leave the classics alone.

  12. I want a passionate debate here. I love Greer Garson in Ms. Miniver, but I think Bette Davis should have won for her performance in Now Voyager. Davis was so dominant, I still can't believe she didn't win. I think Ms. Miniver generated more excitement among oscar voters, because of the patriotic fervor that swept America after pearl harbor. Could it be oscar voters were hesitant to give the mercurial Davis a third oscar? What do you think?

  13. Since we are all classic movie fans, we pretty much know every actor and actress from that era. Unfortunately, the majority have fallen into obscurity among the mainstream. This generation only knows the icons, like bogart, gable, davis and hepburn. Name your 10 actors or actresses you wish the people of today should know more about. Here are my 10:

    1)Jeanne Crain

    2)Norma Shearer

    3)Rosalind Russell

    4)Deanna Durbin

    5)Priscilla Lane

    6)Dick Powell

    7)Robert Montgomery

    8)Robert Young

    9)Douglas Fairbanks Jr.

    10)Fred Macmurray
