*You can bid on Clark Gable's convertible* Saturday, June 6, 2009 By Peter C.T. Elsworth number of classic cars from the collection of the late Ted Leonard of the Auto Show dealership fame highlight Sunday?s Bonhams & Butterfields? classic car auction at the Greenwich Concours d?Elegance in Connecticut. ?The auction room will be packed and the telephone bank will be alive and buzzing,? said Mark Osborne, who heads Bonhams? International Motoring Department, in a phone interview from San Francisco. ?The highlight is the sale of 12 cars from the estate of Ted Leonard: a lot of good cars from a standout collection of a lifelong enthusiast and collector.? The overall sale will feature more than 80 classic cars. Leonard established and operated The Auto Show foreign car dealership in Seekonk for nearly 50 years. He started collecting cars in a modest fashion, focusing on small Crosleys until he had one for every year they were made, according to the auction catalogue. ?I couldn?t collect all the cars that I loved so as soon as I got a better one, I got rid of a lesser one and I just kept getting more and more of the cars that I really wanted,? he is quoted. In addition to his dealership and auto collection, Leonard was involved in Rhode Island politics and took his family to Ireland for three years where he bought and restored a Georgian mansion and raised sheep. But his main passion was collecting and restoring cars. ?I like beautiful things and I think automobiles are wonderful, beautiful art,? Leonard said. ?Buying and having these wonderful pieces of rolling history has made my life exciting.? Leonard became particularly interested in cars that featured in or had a connection to the movies and the sale includes the cream yellow 1928 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Ascot sport Phaeton that starred with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow in the 1974 film version of The Great Gatsby. Leonard?s car was repainted to fit F. Scott Fitzgerald?s flamboyant description of Gatsby?s Rolls-Royce: ?It was a rich cream color, bright with nickel, swollen here and there in its monstrous length with triumphant hat-boxes and supper-boxes and tool-boxes, and terraced with a labyrinth of wind-shields that mirrored a dozen suns.? ?The Rolls has a key role in the movie, it did not flash by on the screen,? Osborne said, referring to the accident involving Myrtle Wilson, who is run down by the car and killed. Although Gatsby was not driving, he takes the blame to protect a former lover. Wilson?s husband subsequently shoots and kills Gatsby. Osborne said the car still had the plastic wings that the studio used to avoid damage to the original metal ones. And he said the grille had been raised to allow the camera to include the iconic ?Spirit of Ecstasy? hood ornament in shots made from the front of the car into the front seats. At the same time, Osborne said the car was a standout in its own right. ?Put aside the film history, it?s a wonderful old car, a fantastic thing,? he said. ?Factor in the film and that adds to its appeal and generates all sorts of interest.? It is valued at $150,000. *Another standout from The Leonard Collection is a 1938 Packard Eight Convertible Victoria that belonged to film star Clark Gable. The coachwork is by Howard ?Dutch? Darrin, an American who established a design house in Paris.* *?Clark Gable was a dyed-in-the-wool car guy,? said Osborne, comparing him to film star and car and motorcycle buff Steve McQueen.* *?And he bought this car right at the zenith of his stardom,? he added, noting Gable?s lead role as Rhett Butler in the iconic 1939 film, Gone with the Wind.* *?The car has very elegant proportions, absolutely perfect, and the right people are on the phone expressing interest,? he said. It is valued at $175,000.* Other film-related cars include a 1924 Packard 136 Single Eight that was featured in the PBS production of Edith Wharton?s House of Mirth, ($30,000); and a 1929 Rolls-Royce Phantom I that featured in the 1978 film, The Betsy, ($20,000). Additional cars from the Leonard Collection include a 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Oxford Touring Car that formerly belonged to President Woodrow Wilson ($140,000); and a 1928 Auburn 115S Boattail Speedster that formerly belonged to British speed ace Sir Malcolm Campbell. It is valued at $175,000. Osborne said the auto auction market was strong despite the economy. ?The market for vintage motorcars and motorcycles is very good globally,? he said. ?We are seeing very high prices being met.? ?People still seem to have money to spend on vintage cars and motorcycles,? he added, noting ?You can your car in the garage and it?s still there tomorrow. Compare that to stocks.? At the same time, Osborne said he believed the estimates for the sale were conservative. ?They?re come-and-get-me prices,? he said. ?They?re not high, and all achievable estimates.? The rest of the sale includes a 1903 Ford Model A 4-seater estimated at $150,000; a 1912 Hudson ?Mile-a-Minute? Speedster ($90,000); a 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C Super Sport (estimate on request); a prize-winning 1953 Siata 208S Barchetta ($700,000); and a 1973 Chevrolet Impala notable for being ?the first production car to feature ?Air bag? technology, possibly the last remaining example,? ($70,000). In addition to the autos, Bonhams will be auctioning selected memorabilia associated with the hobby, including hood ornaments, artwork and commercial signs. *A rare poster for director Sergei Eisenstein's 1925 landmark Soviet film The Battleship Potemkin is to be put up for sale.* 04 Jun 2009 The poster, dating from 1929, is one of only a handful remaining, and is expected to go for around ?150,000 when it is sold at The Grosvenor House Art and Antiques Fair in Park Lane, London, later this month. The silent film gives a dramatised account of a mutiny aboard a Russian battleship in 1905, when the crew rebelled against their Tsarist officers, and had a huge influence on cinema techniques. The film website imdb.com summarises the plot: "What started as a protest strike when the crew was given rotten meat for dinner ended in a riot. The sailors raised the red flag and tried to ignite the revolution in their home port Odessa." The film was the actor Charlie Chaplin's favourite. The poster, designed by Vladimir and Georgii Stenberg in the Russian constructivist style, shows two sailors on stylised, geometric battleship guns. Bruce Marchant, the co-owner of The Reel Poster Gallery, which is selling the poster, said: "This is among the greatest film posters ever produced. "Its design was as revolutionary as the politics it espoused and very few of the originals have survived. Only one other example has come on to the market in the past two decades and the one that we will be exhibiting at Grosvenor House has been in a private collection for many years." The poster will be on public view at the fair from June 11-17 2009.

About Jack Lemmon (February 8th, 1925 - June 27, 2001) One of the most versatile actors in the history of Hollywood was born in an elevator in the Boston suburb of Newton and attended Harvard University (Class of '47), where he became president of the Hasty Pudding Club. After a stint in the Navy, Lemmon became a professional actor, working on radio, television and Broadway. Although he made his film debut playing a bit part in the 1949 film The Lady Takes a Sailor, his official debut as a cinematic leading man was opposite Judy Holliday in the 1954 comedy, It Should Happen to You. Lemmon worked with many legendary leading ladies over the course of his five-decade-long career, including Rita Hayworth (Fire Down Below), Marilyn Monroe (Some Like It Hot), Julie Andrews (That?s Life!), Shirley MacLaine (The Apartment), Natalie Wood (The Great Race), Betty Grable (Three for the Show), Janet Leigh (My Sister Eileen), Doris Day (It Happened to Jane), June Allyson (You Can't Run Away From It), Ann Margret (Grumpy Old Men), Sophia Loren (Grumpier Old Men) and many more. In addition, he teamed with Walter Matthau in 11 films (including The Odd Couple, The Front Page and Grumpy Old Men), forming one of the most-beloved duos in film history. Lemmon was also a favorite actor of legendary director Billy Wilder, who cast Lemmon in many of his classic films, including Some Like It Hot (named by the American Film Institute as the funniest film of all time), The Apartment, Irma La Douce, The Fortune Cookie, Avanti!, The Front Page and Buddy Buddy. In 1956, Lemmon was awarded his first Academy Award? as Best Supporting Actor for Mister Roberts and in 1974 was named Best Actor for Save the Tiger, becoming the first actor to achieve this honor in two categories. His other Best Actor nominations include Some Like it Hot (1960), The Apartment (1961), Days of Wine and Roses (1963), The China Syndrome (1980), Tribute (1981), and Missing (1983). In 1988, the American Film Institute honored him with its Lifetime Achievement Award. He also holds the record for the most Golden Globe? nominations for acting (22, including both actors and actresses) of which he won six, plus the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1991. At the 1998 Golden Globe Awards, he was nominated for "Best Actor in a Made for TV Movie" for his role in Twelve Angry Men losing to Ving Rhames. After accepting the award, Rhames asked Lemmon to come onstage, and in a move that stunned the audience, gave his award to him. Lemmon was one of the best-liked actors in Hollywood. He is remembered as a genuine mentor as the actor Kevin Spacey recalled in a tribute. Already regarded as a legend, he met the teenage Spacey backstage after a theater performance and spoke to him about pursuing an acting career. Spacey would later work with Lemmon in Dad (1989), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) and on stage in a revival of "Long Day's Journey Into Night." In 2000, Spacey dedicated his Oscar? for American Beauty to Lemmon. Jack Lemmon's place in film history is firmly established and his work will live on for generations, as evidenced by his being voted the 33rd Greatest Movie Star of all time by Entertainment Weekly and the 45th Greatest Movie Star of all time by Premiere Magazine. PHFFFT! (1954) (91 Minutes - not rated) After their successful pairing in It Should Happen to You (1954), Oscar? winner Judy Holliday (Best Actress, Born Yesterday, 1951) and Lemmon were reteamed in this romantic comedy by George Axelrod (The Seven Year Itch, Breakfast at Tiffany's). Phffft! follows a married couple who divorce only to find out that their divorce is even less successful than their marriage. Columbia's rising love goddess Kim Novak and Jack Carson provide support as the romantic interests Lemmon and Holliday take up with in an effort to make each other jealous. OPERATION MAD BALL (1957) (105 Minutes - not rated) Lemmon teamed up with director Richard Quine for the second of six films, (including My Sister Eileen; Bell, Book and Candle; It Happened to Jane; and How to Murder Your Wife) for this hilarious comedy about a party being planned by a group of enlisted men and their efforts to keep the fact a secret from an obnoxious, busy body officer. Lemmon headlined a cast of comedy legends including Ernie Kovacs (Our Man in Havana) and Mickey Rooney (Babes in Arms). THE NOTORIUS LANDLADY (1962) (123 Minutes - not rated) Richard Quine teamed two of his most frequent collaborators, Lemmon (in the fifth of their six films together) and Kim Novak (who made four films with the director) in a comedy/drama written by Blake Edwards (The Pink Panther, Victor/Victoria) and co-starring Fred Astaire (Top Hat, The Band Wagon). An American diplomat (Lemmon), stationed in London, rents a room from a landlady (Novak) only to discover she's being watched by Scotland Yard and may have killed her missing husband. UNDER THE YUM YUM TREE (1963) (110 Minutes - not rated) Nominated for Best Motion Picture Musical/Comedy and Best Actor (Lemmon) Golden Globes, Under the Yum Yum Tree is a comedy about a young couple in love (Carol Lynley and Dean Jones) who agree to determine their "character compatibility" by living together platonically. Virtue eventually triumphs after a series of humorous incidents during which the couple's lecherous landlord (Lemmon) hopes to seduce his new female tenant. Based on the risqu? Broadway play by Lawrence Roman and co-starring Edie Adams (The Apartment, Lover Come Back), Imogene Coca (TV's "Your Show of Shows"), and Paul Lynde (TV's "Bewitched"); Under the Yum Yum Tree was a top-grosser at the box office. GOOD NEIGHBOR SAM (1964) (130 Minutes) This wacky comedy about a happily married advertising agent (Lemmon) trapped into posing as his sexy neighbor's husband so she can inherit $15 million, co-stars Romy Schneider (The Victors), Dorothy Provine (The Great Race), and Edward G. Robinson (Little Caesar). The story soon spirals out of control when her greedy in-laws hit the scene. DVD Bonus Features include: ? Documentary hosted by Chris Lemmon - Jack Lemmon: The Man Behind The Magic (Parts 1 & 2) ? Vintage Photo Gallery ? Original Theatrical Trailers

Ryder And Slater On Board For Heathers 2 1 June 2009 Actress Winona Ryder will reprise her most iconic role in a sequel to Heathers - and co-star Christian Slater is also on board. The duo starred in the cult 1989 comedy about four girls who form a clique at a surburban high school, and rumours of a follow-up film have been circulating for months. Now Ryder has confirmed she will be revisiting Westerberg High once more, although the project is so secret, even she's struggling to find out more details. She tells film bible Empire magazine, "Whatever you hear, there is a sequel in the works, I swear to God. "But for some reason the writer, Dan Waters, and director, Michael Lehman, don't want to talk about it. I've been wanting to do a sequel forever. There is a story, and Christian has agreed to come back."

'Ferris Bueller' house lands on the market

*Famous Gen X favorite 'Ferris Bueller' movie house with glass garage for Ferrari is up for sale* May 31, 2009 Examiner.com *Gen X with buying power take notice: a famous teen dream Ferrari classic house available for purchase on the real estate market. Who will be the next lucky owner of the Chi-town classic? We hope it will be a car collector who understands the historical memorabilia value of living in the house that has itself inspired so many auto collectors nationwide to build themselves additional detached showroom garages.* *Here's the latest in Ferrari car pop culture news from artistdirect.com.* "The luxury abode, known as the Ben Rose Home, is located in Illinois' Highland Park and the asking price is $2.3 million. The house is made of steel and glass and served as the location for the pivotal scene in the film, when Cameron defies his father and kicks his prized car through the glass garage." Yep -- we remember seeing it happen from a front row, middle row, and back row seat when the blockbuster film first hit the theaters -- because the car scenes were so awesome and the angst so post-modern and simpatico with the era that we simply could never see enough of it. The heavily treed suburbs of the Chicago area are a lovely place to live. The city itself has even been nominated as one of the top ten places for Gen X and Gen Y to live. The home itself was built in 1953 and offers the new residents a comfortable amount of estate living space fit for a modest family. The main house includes four bedrooms and four bathrooms, but really -- to be able to hang out in THAT garage all day and reminisce? The inside of the home, no matter how comfortable or elegant, can never be as priceless as owning the garage that made it so famous. *According to a full report by reporter Kevin Bass of the New York Times:* The steel and glass house immortalized in the pop classic movie ?Ferris Bueller?s Day Off? is for sale... The original house, located in the wooded Chicago suburb of Highland Park, was designed by A. James Speyer, a prot?g? of Mies van der Rohe, in 1953. The glass pavilion, designed by the noted architect David Haid, was added a few years later, according to Meladee Hughes, a listing agent at Sudler Sotheby?s International Realty. In the movie, the house was home to Bueller?s friend, Cameron. His father used the glass pavilion to display his red Ferrari, which (spoiler alert!) ultimately ended up in the ravine that the house overhangs... The four-bedroom, 5,300-square-foot house is priced at $2.3 million, according to the listing. ?It?s not just about the car going in the ravine,? Ms. Hughes told the Chicago Sun-Times. ?It?s just a wonderful property.? Here's a thought: can you imaging what a cool gift it would be to actually get a house like this for a birthday present? Here's to hoping some famous celebrity car guy like Jay Leno picks this beautiful property up and will keep the car filled with all the glamor and luxury it deserves simply for being what it is -- or for someone fun like Matthew Broderick to pick it up and turn it into a vacation rental home available to exotic car enthusiasts. This is the kind of clean line home that functionally uses space and terrain to make the building a part of nature, much like a Frank Lloyd Wright design or a house the is easy to picture fictional character Howard Rourke of Ayn Rand's classic novel "The Fountainhead" designing with the extra garage alongside to keep his own concept car collection in; so, for the preservation of Ferrari pop culture history and teenage movie classics, there is only one more thing left to say: -

A New "Guys and Dolls?" Yikes.
CelluloidKid replied to ChipHeartsMovies's topic in General Discussions
They already made a musical based on the film _Some Like it Hot_, it was called _Sugar_. I saw it in Denver a few years back! What was funny is that Tony Curtis played Osgood Fielding. What was even worse is that Mr. Curtis kept forgetting his lines and had to read it by cue cards. -
Source: Collider, Bloody-Disgusting May 29th, 2009 It seems that a classic sci-fi film is in line to get a brand new origin story. According to Bloody-Disgusting, Fox is developing a new origin story for the 1979 sci-fi classic, Alien. The site had originally reported that the project was going to be a straight-up remake of the film, but shortly thereafter the story was updated with information that another source indicated the new project was going to be an origin story and not a remake. The site was reporting that Michael Costigan, Tony Scott and his brother Ridley Scott, who directed the 1979 film, are all attached to produce, with Carl Rinsch set to direct. It was said that Rinsch is a commercial and music video director who also does producing work for Tony and Ridley Scott's production company, Scott Free Productions, who are producing the remake. UPDATE: (5/29/09 5:45 PM PST) Today Collider was able to confirm this new film will be a prequel from producer Tony Scott, who also confirmed that Carl Rinsch will be directing. Here's an excerpt of what the producer had to say. Collider: 20th Century Fox is talking about remaking or redoing the original Alien. What's going on with that? Tony Scott: Yes, Carl Rinsch is going to do the prequel to Alien. He's one of our directors at our company. Collider: I'm going to be blunt about this. Fox has not been doing a great job recently with their movies. They haven't been an artist friendly studio. Are you guys going to have some creative control and make this a kick-**** film? Tony: Yes! But Fox is our home. They finace our production company. *Click Below for more on what Scott had to say about this new prequel.* http://www.collider.com/2009/05/29/exclusive-tony-scott-confirms-carl-rinsch-is-directing-alien-and-its-a-prequel/

Can't wait for the next marketing 3-D marketing scheme. ..._The Final Destination_ .. the fourth installment to the Final Destination film series, and the first of which to be shot in HD 3-D.
-
_My Bloody Valentine_ (1981) rocked. I grew up with the film . Very sad to see that it was made into a 3-D mess. I saw the Re-Make (Thank G_D for gift cards!) and I was disappointed. The 3-D was fair for the Re-Make ....All the 3-D was for was to get today's generation into the theater. Nothing really jumped out and scared me...the trailer for the re-make gave more thrills and chills! The characters (Unlike the original) were flat and cardboard. What I love about the day and age of DVD, is that the _My Bloody Valentine_ (1981) just got re-released as a directors cut W./ the 3 minutes cut by the MPAA due to the amount of violence and gore. I hate to say it...but I watch more current events, & if I watch any TV, it is usually CNN, The E! Channel, the history channel and Yes, my beloved TCM! I also read many books and magazines so I was not familiar with the cast for the Re-Make of _My Bloody Valentine_ (2009) ,....but the cast seemed they needed to go back to acting school and learn to act. Mostly the Remake was forgettable.! ' The only part that was funny was the naked chick running away from the killer in 3-D!

May 29, 2009 *Free Sam Raimi Movies this Weekend!*By Sonia Zjawinski It?s been 17 years since Sam Raimi released Army of Darkness, his last true horror film before diving into the Spiderman franchise. Today, Raimi takes another stab at blood and gore with _Drag Me to Hell_. To celebrate, Fearnet.com is offering free streams of Raimi?s classic, _Evil Dead II_ (1987). You?ll have to sit through a few commercials, a la Hulu, and it only streams in standard def, but that?s a small price to pay to see Bruce Campbell back in fighting shape. Evil Dead II can be streamed gratis until June 1st, along with Raimi?s two personal faves, 1998?s Carnival of Souls and Faust: Love of the Damned. Since getting kicked off Time Warner Cable?s roster as a video-on-demand channel, Fearnet has been trying to keep audiences satiated online through free streams of movies like Friday the 13th and Saw. And while online audiences have been good to them, the horror company is still attempting to bring back the traditional TV channel through online petitions, such as the one currently found on Facebook. Fearnet?s ax from Time Warner Cable probably has less to do with the horror company and more to do with the lack of great horror films out there. As reported two years ago, the box office has seen more red than green when it comes to current horror films. At the time it seemed as if torture-themed movies like Hostel and Saw were to blame, so can Raimi bring back the genre to its original splendor? Who knows, but at least there?s a site for those of us still craving the golden age of horror.

*'French Crime Wave' at Los Angeles County Museum of Art* By Susan King May 28, 2009 Though Hollywood cinema is best known for producing some of the greatest dark, dank and atmospheric examples of film noir, the French have never been far behind. The new Los Angeles County Museum of Art retrospective "French Crime Wave," which begins Friday and continues weekends through June 20, will highlight just that fact. Opening the Gallic festival are Alain Corneau's 1979 thriller "S?rie Noire," starring the late, great Patrick Dewaere, and Bertrand Tavernier's 1974 suspenser "The Clockmaker," with Philippe Noiret. In addition, Corneau will do a Q&A on Saturday after a screening of his gripping 1976 noir "Police Python 357," with Yves Montand and Montand's wife, Simone Signoret. www.lacma.org *Starry 'Sleeper'* For those who enjoy watching films under the stars, Cinespia's screening series returns to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. On tap for Saturday is one of Woody Allen's early funny ones: 1973's futuristic romp "Sleeper," which also features Diane Keaton. www.cinespia.org *Horror night* The Steve Allen Theater and Hollywood MobMov will offer the "Masters of Horror Drive-In Series" on Friday nights in the theater's parking lot. This week: the creepy "Phantasm II," plus a Q&A with writer-director Don Coscarelli and actor Angus Scrimm. www.steveallentheater.com
