*TMC host bring film insight to Schaumburg* - *Sunday, March 15, 2009 7:00 PM Robert Osborne* By Eileen O. Daday | Daily Herald CorrespondentContact writer Chicago Daily Herald *Robert Osborne has attained fame from his familiar role as the prime time host of Turner Classic Movies.* *He is just as familiar to film stars, who know him as the lead columnist in their trade publication, the Hollywood Reporter, and as the official greeter on the red carpet at the Academy Awards.* *Osborne is making a rare appearance at 7 p.m. Sunday at the _Prairie Center for the Arts_ in Schaumburg, where he is expected to talk about his life and the film industry.* His visit comes in conjunction with Saturday's Screen Test Student Fest, and in fact every ticket purchased for Osborne's show comes with a free ticket to the film festival. In a phone interview from his home in New York, Osborne reflected on how he came to make a living off his hobby: writing and talking about old films. "This was something I always wanted to do, but it didn't exist when I was growing up," Osborne says. "Movies didn't come back. Once you saw them in the theater, that was it, except for an occasional blockbuster, like "Gone With The Wind," or "Lawrence of Arabia. "But now with the birth of Turner Classic Movies," he adds, "it has given these films a new life span." He points to Lucille Ball as one of the biggest influences in his life. It was she who suggested he give up acting and concentrate on writing. He plans to tell Sunday's audience more about their relationship and what it was like to work with Ball at the height of her career. The Prairie Center's production supervisor, Rob Pileckis, will moderate Osborne's appearance, in an interview format, while featuring some video clips in the background. He also will take questions, which Osborne suspects will focus on his most recent gig as greeter at the Oscars. Osborne says it never fails to amaze him how much movie fans want to know about the industry's legends - about his first hand experiences with actors like Bette Davis, Judy Garland and Henry Fonda. "Audiences are more fascinated now than ever," Osborne says. "These stars have become icons in the business." He fills his introductions to TCM movies with background and insider information, as well as their history of awards at the Oscars. Osborne says he tapes the two-minute introductions - and concluding segments - in the living room set of Studio C at the Turner Broadcasting headquarters in Atlanta. One week each month, he shoots 150 segments for the upcoming movies, typically two months out. The rest of the month, he says, he writes material back in New York, as well as his weekly column for the Hollywood Reporter. He's also preparing for appearances, such as this one, which allows him to do what he loves best: talking about the movies. Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts 201 Schaumburg Ct Schaumburg, IL 60193 (847) 895-3600 _Robert Osborne and the Movies_ In conjunction with the Screen Test Student Fest, the Prairie Center welcomes TCM host Robert Osborne for a discussion of his life and the world of motion pictures. Osborne has been on Hollywood?s inside track as actor, columnist and television host; his vast experience has earned him a reputation as one of film?s leading authorities. _*SPECIAL OFFER_:* Get a FREE Screen Test Student Fest ticket for every Robert Osborne ticket purchased!

The three of Cain's "best" books have been adapted to the screen, and all are still regarded among Hollywood's best: The Postman Always Rings Twice, Mildred Pierce, and Double Indemnity. *_SPOILER ALERT_:* What I found for example, the books compared to the movies were much nastier, and really nobody winds. For example, in Double Indemnity Walter Neff & Phyllis Dietrichson commit suicide by jumping off a ship at the end of the book. In Mildred Pierce, Mildred Pierce loses "Everything" and even her best friend stabs her in the back! Interesting reads...window into another time! I have lost count of how many times I have watched Double Indemnity , and it has been over 30 years since I first saw it on TV as teenager, but with each viewing I come away with something new.

It's Bruce Campbell!!! What can you say!! I I love the man...& the film Name Is Bruce was "NOT" for the "General" public it was a love letter to his fans. I met Bruce Campbell for the 2nd time last year in December 2008 when he came to Phoenix, AZ W./his film My Name Is Bruce (2007) ..very nice guy ...He did a Q/A with the audience about the film and he also signed some things. I joked with him about how I met him years before in Denver at his book signing for his book: _Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor_. Great man ...great actor....I have a thread about him in "Cult"...check it out!! _The Evil Dead_ (1981) rocks....ASH all the way!

*THIS IS THE BEST NEWS YET FOR A DVD RELEASE...* *I'm a huge Peter Bogdanovich fan (I met the man a few years back when he was the Denver Film Fest to do a Q/A about his film The Last Picture Show.).... I'm very excited to see that the "Martini Movies" will "Finally put _Nickelodeon_ (1976) onto DVD 04/21/09 after all these years! I couldn't even find a VHS copy when I looked for it!* Nice that the film will be packaged W./Peter's other great film ....The Last Picture Show (1971)!! *Peter Bogdanovich's NICKELODEON (1976) Comes To DVD!* Peter Bogdanovich had one of the great filmmaking runs of the 1970?s. From LAST PICTURE SHOW in 1971, to WHAT?S UP DOC?, PAPER MOON, DAISY MILLER, AT LONG LAST LOVE, NICKELODEON and SAINT JACK, they were all very interesting, if not all entirely successful films. *Of those films, the musical AT LONG LAST LOVE and 1976?s NICKELODEON have been MIA on any form of video. While they have turned up on cable (and both are better than the rumors would have you believe), they have been difficult to see.* Seeing _Nickelodeon_ (1976) will now be easier. _Nickelodeon_ (1976) was loosely based on the career of Cecil B. DeMille.! On April 21, 2009 Sony will release a double feature DVD of both the previously available LAST PICTURE SHOW as well as NICKELODEON. The DVD will include both the color and black and white director?s cuts of NICKELODEON. Peter Bogdanovich will have a new audio commentary on both films. NICKELODEON was Bogdanovich?s tribute to silent filmmakers, starring Burt Reynolds, Ryan and Tatum O?Neal, John Ritter and Brian Keith. It has been at least 15 years since I last saw it, but I remember liking it quite a bit. The DVD will be only $24.95 for both. Quite a deal. Thanks. talkingmoviezzz.

*_Vibes_ (1988) - At the urging of an eccentric, two mismatched psychics team up for a mysterious mission to find a lost city of gold in Ecuador.* It's an "Indiana Jones" or "Romancing the Stone"-style adventure that's designed to showcase pop-rocker Cyndi Lauper in her first big-screen feature film. *I remember seeing Vibes back in the 80's ....Now through the years it has became an OOP "Curio Piece"......A film in which Cyndi Lauper ..tired to make an acting career! (& people thought Madonna couldn't act!)...& well put it this way the film vanished & became a cult film.* ( _In a twist_ - Despite the poor box-office results of Vibes and the generally poor reviews for her performance, Lauper would go on to earn an Emmy award for a guest stint on TV's Mad About You and appear with Christopher Walken in the indie drama _The Opportunists_ (2000). Vibes isn't a great movie. Heck, it probably isn't even a good one. Not even a "Classic" film. But it made me laugh consistently throughout, and that's worth something, especially for a film that embraces tongue-in-cheek camp. Along for the kooky ride are: Jeff Goldblum, B-Movie actor Julian Sands & Peter Falk! Now thaks to the second wave of films Sony just released that they're calling "Martini Movies", we can now see this curious gem. (& people thought _Shanghai Surprise_ (1986) was bad!). Hmmm ... _Shanghai Surprise_ (1986) is better! "Vibes" is produced by Ron Howard and scripted by "Happy Days" and "Laverne & Shirley" alums Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, who also co-wrote "Spies Like Us," "Splash" and "Night Shift." And it's directed by Ken Kwapis--yes, the same Ken Kwapis who directed 11 episodes of "The Office." So these people know what they're doing, and they're not giving us sophisticated comedy. I remember when the film came out in theaters it was a huge critical and commercial failure. *The martini recipe on the Vibes DVD is for the _Abracadabra Martini_:* 1 shot tequila 1 shot apricot brandy 2 shots lemon juice 2 shots lychee juice.

WHAT IS UP WITH TCM THIS YEAR!??!? WOW! EVERYTHING THAT TCM AS SHOWN & DONE SO FAR HAS NOT DISAPPOINTED ME!! GOOD JOB TCM! KUDDOS! *Chuck Jones: Memories of Childhood to Premiere on TCM on March 24* March 10, 2009 *Turner Classic Movies (TCM) and filmmakers Peggy Stern and John Canemaker, who earned Oscars for the animated short THE MOON AND THE SON: AN IMAGINED CONVERSATION, have collected the memories of one of Hollywood's greatest animators in a unique, half-hour film entitled _CHUCK JONES: MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD_.* *This film, which combines an interview with the legendary animator with newly created animated segments, premieres on TCM Tuesday, March 24, at 8 p.m., followed by a selection of his films (complete schedule below).* _CHUCK JONES: MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD_ is a film by Stern, with Canemaker also serving as producer and animation director. The project grew out of director Stern's interest in exploring the childhood experiences of artists. In 1997, Canemaker, a longtime mutual friend of Jones and Stern, brought them together for the interviews that became the basis of the film. During the interviews, Jones spontaneously began sketching his boyhood self as he related his memories. These sketches later inspired the documentary's animated sequences, which Canemaker directed. Shortly before his death, Jones had an opportunity to see a test cut of the film, with new animation and archival imagery blended into the interview footage, and pronounced it "delightful." The Jones family subsequently provided additional material from the family archive, resulting in an intimate film full of revealing anecdotes about the events and personalities that influenced his early creative life and long career in cartoons. *The following is the complete schedule for TCM's March 24 tribute to Chuck Jones:* 8:00 p.m. -- CHUCK JONES: MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD (2009) -- Premiere 8:30 p.m. -- THE NIGHT WATCHMAN (1938) 8:40 p.m. -- PREST-O, Change-O (1939) 8:50 p.m. -- SNIFFLES AND THE BOOKWORM (1939) 9:00 p.m. -- ELMER'S CANDID CAMERA (1940) 9:10 p.m. -- SCENT-IMENTAL OVER YOU (1947) 9:20 p.m. -- HAREDEVIL HARE (1948) 9:30 p.m. -- DUCK AMUCK (1953) 9:40 p.m. -- ONE FROGGY EVENING (1955) 9:50 p.m. -- WHAT'S OPERA, DOC? (1957) 10:00 p.m. -- THE DOT AND THE LINE (1965) 10:15 p.m. -- THE BEAR THAT WASN'T (1967) 10:30 p.m. -- CHUCK JONES: MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD (2009) -- Encore 11:00 p.m. -- THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH (1969) 12:30 a.m. -- THE NIGHT WATCHMAN (1938) 12:40 a.m. -- PREST-O, CHANGE-O (1939) 12:50 a.m. -- SNIFFLES AND THE BOOKWORM (1939) 1:00 a.m. -- ELMER'S CANDID CAMERA (1940) 1:10 a.m. -- SCENT-IMENTAL OVER YOU (1947) 1:20 a.m. -- HAREDEVIL HARE (1948) 1:30 a.m. -- DUCK AMUCK (1953) 1:40 a.m. -- ONE FROGGY EVENING (1955) 1:50 a.m. -- WHAT'S OPERA, DOC? (1957) 2:00 a.m. -- THE DOT AND THE LINE (1965) 2:15 a.m. -- THE BEAR THAT WASN'T (1967) 2:30 a.m. -- CHUCK JONES: MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD (2009) -- Encore 3:00 a.m. -- THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH (1969) Legendary animation producer, director and screenwriter Chuck Jones was the last surviving giant from the golden era of Warner Bros. animation, a period spanning roughly from 1935 to 1959. He excelled at designing and posing expressive characters. Jones has been quoted as saying that an animator is "an actor with a pencil." If so, his work revealed him as a master thespian.

I'm a huge fan of James M. Cain ...I have read all his novels...Very cool that TCM is devoting a night of his film adaptations. *FRIDAY MARCH 13, 2008: _TCM PRIME TIME FEATURE: BASED ON JAMES M. The novel's mix of sexuality and violence was startling in its time, and saw the book banned in Boston. *_James M. Cain_* During the 1930's and 40's James M. Cain was, along with Cornell Woolrich, Raymond Chandler, and Dashiell Hammett, one of the creators of the roman noir genre. Cain was born in Annapolis on July 1, 1892. He was raised in Chestertown, Maryland, and graduated from Washington College, where his father was president. Hmmmm Only 7 ...here it goes.... *_Paid_ (1930)* - OOP on VHS if it ever was..I have heard different things..Not on DVD as of yet! Interesting side note: This time around, MGM star (and wife of MGM production head Thalberg) Norma Shearer wanted the part, but became pregnant, so Joan took over....& the rest is history!! *_Today We Live_ (1933)* - Rare Gary Cooper and Joan film. With dialogue by William Faulkner! One of Joan Crawford?s most unusual films, both romance and thrilling action picture replete with air battle sequences. *_The Bride Wore Red_ (1937)* - The last of seven films Crawford and Tone did together. Very under-rated film. Sad OOP on VHS..no DVD plans. *_Mildred Pierce_ (1945)* - Whoo Hoo!! Joan Win's an Oscar from Warner Brothers....she got nothing from MGM! What a way to come back! *_Above Suspicion_ (1943)* - Fred MacMurray and Joan Crawford are Richard and Frances Myles, a pair of American newlyweds improbably hired by the British Secret Service to act as spies in Nazi-dominated Europe during World War II.....Zany crazy fun! *_Johnny Guitar_ (1954)* What needs to be said that hasn't been said! *_Sudden Fear_ (1952)* - Crawford not only stars, but co-produced this top notch noir, showing further evidence of her boundless talent. *Johnny Guitar. Republic, 1954.* *A 1966 poll of 28 French critics named this the top Western of all time. Says French director Francois Truffaut*: I once said (and I am ready to say it again before the camera) that "Johnny Guitar" has more importance in my life than in Nicholas Ray's. I possessed a passion for the film from the moment I saw it. I was a critic at the time, I wrote some articles about it, and began a correspondence with Nicholas Ray. . . "Johnny Guitar" was very important to my life. Because I found it very powerful and profound on man-woman relationships. It is the only film I have seen that dealt with a certain aspect of love relationships... From the documentary film: "I'm a Stranger Here Myself," 1974)
