*Reese Witherspoon has the 'fever' to play Peggy Lee in biopic! Wow!*
*Nora Ephron at the helm*
Tuesday, Aug 10, 2010
By HitFix Staff
Actress Reese Witherspoon is in talks to sing again on the big screen - in a movie about legendary entertainer Peggy Lee.
Witherspoon showed off her vocals as June Carter in Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line (2005), a role which landed her Oscar gold in 2006.
The star has now bought the rights to the life story of the Fever hitmaker, who rose to fame in the 1940s and went on to record a number of hit albums.
According to trade paper Variety, Witherspoon has enlisted Hollywood filmmaker Nora Ephron to write and direct the biopic, which the actress plans to produce and star.
The project will document Lee's life until her death in 2002, including the late star's singing and acting career.

*Unseen photos of Hollywood star Jayne Mansfield discovered in pub*
*A previously unseen photograph of the Hollywood actress Jayne Mansfield pulling a pint of beer in an English country pub has emerged after more than 50 years.*
08 Aug 2010
Telegraph.co.uk
*A previously unseen photograph of the Hollywood actress Jayne Mansfield pulling a pint of beer in an English country pub has emerged after more than 50 years.*
The blonde bombshell, the first mainstream actress to go nude in a film, is also pictured cuddling one of her favourite chihuahua dogs alongside British actor Anthony Quayle.
The stars were in England in 1958 to film a thriller called "The Challenge" in the UK and "It Takes A Thief" in the US. It was a flop.
They had popped into the pub, The Deers Hut in Liphook, Hants, because filming was taking place at the nearby Longmoor military railway.
The photographs were discovered by the pub landlord Steve Frain when he was doing some renovation work.
They have now been framed and have become a major object of curiosity for drinkers at the hostelry.
Miss Mansfield, whose career was on the wane when the picture was taken despite the allure of her 40 inch chest, was invited behind the bar by landlord Bert Oram.
She pulled a pint which would have cost 1 shilling and fourpence ? about 7p in today's money. Mr Oram died in 1993.
Outside she posed with Quayle and a huge retriever called Gaspard from a nearby farm.
Landlord Steve Frain, 42, said: "The photographs were among a whole heap of black and white pictures we found when we were redecorating.
"They just turned up our of the blue and nobody locally could remember her turning up ? they must have forgotten.
"I think they are lovely and we have had them framed and put up in the bar. Everyone comments on them and wants to know what Jayne Mansfield was doing here."
Miss Mansfield, who had signed a contract with 20th Century Fox, also made a thriller called Too Hot To Handle in England.
While touring Europe on behalf of the studio she met the Queen at the Cannes Film Festival and told her: "You are so beautiful." The Queen allegedly replied: "So are you."
The actress, rumoured to have had a string of affairs including one with US president John Kennedy and his brother Robert, was married three times and divorced twice.
She had five children.
With her second husband Mickey Hargitay she turned a 40 bedroomed Beverly Hills mansion into 'The Pink Palace' with pink lighting, pink furs, a pink heart-shaped bath and a fountain spurting pink champagne.
She died in a car crash in June 1967 as she was being driven to a TV interview in New Orleans.
The Challenge, released in 1960, bombed with the critics. One said: "The only good thing about this film is the performance of Anthony Quayle."
Quayle, who was knighted in 1985, had a far more distinguished career including as a Shakespearean actor on stage with Laurence Olivier and in films such as Lawrence of Arabia and The Guns of Navarone. He died in 1989.

*Never-before-seen Marilyn Monroe images on display in Newcastle*
Aug 9, 2010
by Barbara Hodgson, The Journal
*HOLLYWOOD glamour comes to Newcastle this week in an exhibition of never-before-seen images of Marilyn Monroe.*
City centre-based Castle Galleries is one of a select number of venues in the country to host a display of previously unpublished work by renowned photographer and pioneering photojournalist Eve Arnold.
Called simply Marilyn, the eight limited edition art prints in the exhibition, which opens on Saturday, feature candid images of the late star taken at the peak of her fame in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
They are actually gicl?e prints, fine art prints taken from Arnold?s original photographs using a process of ink-jet printing.
They capture the actress?s famous mix of beauty and vulnerability in apparently unguarded moments during filming in Nevada of her last completed film The Misfits in 1960. Arnold, who became friends with the glamour icon following a 1952 shoot for Esquire magazine, said of their meeting: ?She was going places but she hadn?t arrived. It became a bond between us.
?Marilyn was very important in my career. I think I was helpful in hers too.?
She added: ?I found myself in the privileged position of photographing somebody who I had first thought had a gift for the camera but who, it turned out, had a genius for it.?
The award-winning photographer, who received a Lifetime Achievement Award this spring, one day after her 98th birthday, is known for her relaxed and natural signature style, avoiding formal studio settings.
Over a 10-year period she photographed Monroe on six occasions, with the session during The Misfits ? the last film either she or co-star Clark Gable completed ? lasting two months.
Monroe died in 1962 at the age of 36.
?She trusted me,? recalled Arnold. ?The bond between us was photography.
?She liked my pictures and was canny enough to realise that they were a fresh approach for presenting her ? a looser, more intimate look than the posed studio portraits she was used to in Hollywood.?
Heralded by Vanity Fair magazine as the top photographer in the world, Arnold became, in 1954, the first female member of the international photographers co-operative Magnum Photos.
Arnold added: ?By seeing her through photographs ? the only way most people ever saw her ? it may be possible to get some idea of how she saw herself and perhaps to glean some insight into the phenomenon that was Marilyn Monroe.?
Marilyn goes on show at Castle Galleries in Monument Mall, Blackett Street. Newcastle, from Saturday. Visit www.castlegalleries.com or call 0191 233 2200.
Call the gallery on 020 8505 6162 to find out more.

*WOW!!! Sad day in Hollywood yesterday! RIP!!! Thanks for the memories!*
*Patricia Neal, from Tony-winning stage actress to Oscar-winning movie star*
August 9, 2010
*Patricia Neal, who died Sunday at age 84, is best known for her role in the movie "Hud," for which she won an Oscar for lead actress in 1964. But the star won another important award early in her career that isn't mentioned nearly as often as her Hollywood victory.*
In 1946, the young Neal was cast in Lillian Hellman's "Another Part of the Forest" on Broadway. The playwright had seen Neal perform at the Westport Country Playhouse in Connecticut and wanted her for a supporting role in the drama. Around the same time, Richard Rodgers wanted to cast the actress in the lead of the play "John Loves Mary."
Neal ended up choosing the Hellman play, and it turned out to be the right decision. At the first-ever Tony Awards in 1947, Neal won the award for best featured actress in a play. Her win -- at the ripe age of 21 -- brought her to the attention of Hollywood and she quickly embarked on a film career that included roles in "The Fountainhead," "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and -- ironically enough -- the film adaptation of "John Loves Mary."
As a member of the Tony Awards' "first" class, Neal became de facto Broadway royalty. She also managed to outlive the other Tony-winning actors from that inaugural year, including Ingrid Bergman, Helen Hayes, Frederic March, Jos? Ferrer and David Wayne.
Neal's post-starlet career was marked by great personal difficulty. Her daughter Olivia died after a case of the measles and a series of strokes left the actress unable to walk or speak. But she rebounded, learning to walk and talk again with the help of her then-husband, author Roald Dahl.
Following her recovery, Neal received an Oscar nomination for "The Subject Was Roses" in 1969. Her last major film role was in Robert Altman's "Cookie's Fortune" in 1999.
Neal never forgot her beginnings in the theater. Her other Broadway credits include Hellman's "The Children's Hour" (1952), Edith Sommer's "A Roomful of Roses" (1955) and William Gibson's "The Miracle Worker" (1959).
The actress appeared at the Tony Award ceremonies over the years as a presenter and often attended Broadway events. In 2006, Neal received a Tony Award to replace the one that had been stolen from her.

*'Back to the Future' to Hit Theaters Again ... But Only in the UK*
Here's news to brighten the moods (if moods actually needed brightening or lightening): Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future trilogy, already scheduled for a feature-rich Blu-Ray set on October 26th, now has an 80s-style trailer to remind fans of the pending release (as if they/we needed any reminders), courtesy of Empire Online. It has everything a film geek could want: time travel, comedy, action, Michael J. Fox in a star-making turn as the lead character (and then some), Marty McFly, a never better Christopher Lloyd as Dr. Emmett Brown, genius inventor of the time machine (a flying DeLorean), Lea Thompson as Marty's future mother, Loraine Baines, and Crispin Glover as his future father, George McFly. Over three films, Marty traveled back to the mid-fifties, the far future (2015), and the Old West.
