Like I said in my thread about "Jack Lemmon".... *The usual standard TCM fare nothing really new or different.* I mean how many time can TCM show _Some Like It Hot_ (1959)!??! Really. I'm beginning to hate this film! & wasn't _Irma la Douce_ (1963) just on last year in December 2008!?. Um Ok! What I don't like is that TCM has _Kotch_ (1971) (Jack Lemmon's directorial debut!) on at 03:15am (01/15/09)! I have to record it...this is rarely shown. What a bad time for this film to be shown! Maybe something like _Stowaway in the Sky_ (1960) - Jack Lemmon was the narrator of the film's English version, he was so impressed with the film that he bought the American rights. Or: _The War Between Men and Women_ (1972) - Which is out of print on VHS. _Glengarry Glen Ross_ (1992) would have been a good switch of pace "OVER" Some Like It Hot (1959). Jack Lemmon as Shelley "The Machine" Levene is a SOB in this! But man, Jack delivers the character home! Very good role..a must see if u are a Jack Lemmon fan!

Polanski seeking to have U.S. charges dropped
CelluloidKid replied to Film_Fatale's topic in General Discussions
*Polanski does not seek return to US* Jan. 14, 2009 *LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Roman Polanski has no plans ever to return to the United States, according to a legal filing Tuesday in his campaign to win dismissal of a long-ago criminal case in which he pleaded guilty to having sex with a 13-year-old girl.* Attorney Chad Hummel, who represents the fugitive director, said in the document that the 75-year-old Polanski's court battle is motivated by a desire to leave a legacy of justice. "Mr. Polanski has no plans ever to return to the United States. But the course of what happens here will have an enduring legacy for the justice system," said the legal brief. It argued that dismissal of the 1977 rape case would show that judicial and prosecutorial misconduct cannot go unpunished. Hummel relied heavily on new disclosures that emerged during interviews in the film "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired." He alleges that the documentary released last year revealed "a pattern of misconduct and improper communications" between the Los Angeles County district attorney's office and the judge in Polanski's case. He contends the now-dead judge planned to change Polanski's agreed-upon sentence, prompting the director to flee the country. The surprise move by Polanski seeking dismissal of the case on Dec. 2 has produced a blizzard of legal documents including a prosecution reply which exposed for the first time explicit sexual details of the assault on the girl in 1977. It said the district attorney's office would fight dismissal and maintained the law requires that Polanski appear in person if he wants a hearing. Hummel argued Tuesday that Polanski does not need to be present for the court to rule on his dismissal motion. The Academy Award-winning director of 2002's "The Pianist" lives in France and could not return for a scheduled Jan. 21 hearing without risking arrest. He is also unable to travel anywhere outside of France because of the outstanding arrest warrant dating to 1977. The motion did not mention whether he plans to travel and work anywhere else in the world if the dismissal is granted. Prosecutors have cited the fugitive disentitlement doctrine of law in arguing that Polanski must appear or be barred from having his motion heard. Hummel argued that, before he fled the country, Polanski ? whose films include "Tess," "Chinatown" and "Rosemary's Baby" ? signed a waiver of his appearance at all hearings in the case. District attorney's spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said Tuesday that the waiver was signed before the sentencing hearing from which Polanski fled three decades ago. "The waiver does not count anymore," she said. "There is a warrant out for his arrest." Prosecutors say there should be no hearing if Polanksi is not present. Complicating matters further is an affidavit filed Monday by the rape victim, Samantha Geimer, now 45, who wants the case dismissed in order to stop renewed waves of publicity. Geimer, now a wife and mother of three who has been public about the case since 1997, said she feels she is being victimized anew by prosecutors who recite the "lurid details" of her assault in their legal papers. Hummel argued that California's constitutional amendment known as the Victim's Bill of Rights "expressly recognizes the importance of achieving finality in a criminal proceeding that has hurtful consequences for a victim, her family and loved ones." Geimer has volunteered to come and speak at the hearing. Gibbons said prosecutors would have no comment on Geimer's affidavit. -

*DON'T FORGET:* *_MGM: When the Lion Roars - The Lion in Winter 1946-86_ - Wednesday, January 14, 2009!* *03:45pm (MT) Arizona Time! - Check Local Time Schedule.* *Part 3 of this 3 part Ted Turner Pictures documentary on the MGM studios continues from post World War 2 to the collapse of the studio as a production company in 1969 when Kirk Kerkorian becomes the principal shareholder. This period is troubled by lower profits and no Oscar wins.* The end of the studio system, the rise of television, and the hard realities of economics bring down the curtain on MGM as an active film production company. Covers 1946-1986; Gene Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly are important performers in the 1950s. Mayer is thought to be neglecting the running of the company in favour of spending his time at the race track and in 1948 Dore Schary is brought in as vice president of production. However Schary's philosophy of producing reality based message pictures clashes with Mayer's preference for wholesome family entertainment. In 1951 Mayer is fired after he gives an ultimatum to New York office that either Schary goes or else. The studio produces some of its greatest musicals in _Show Boat_, _On The Town_, _Singin' in the Rain_, and _An American in Paris_, and introduces Cinemascope in an attempt to battle it's greatest challenge - television. In 1956 Schary too is fired as the studio can only make an occasional profit - _Blackboard Jungle_, _Gig_, _Ben-Hur_, and it's creator Mayer dies in 1957 a broken man. *Very Sad!* *So Sad!* *I believe the closest we ever got to another era of the studio system was when Miramax films which was formed in 1979 by brothers, and former co-chairmen Harvey and Bob Weinstein, This was before Disney Studios bought Miramax in 1993.*

*_Best Live Action Disney_:* *1) _The Shaggy Dog_ (1959)* - A teenager who is transformed into a sheep dog by a magic ring & Fred MacMurray too!! Also it was "THE" first ever Walt Disney live-action comedy! (Did U Know: _The Shaggy Dog_ (1959) was one of the top movies of 1959, and actually grossed higher than _Ben-Hur_ (1959). 2) *_Mary Poppins_ (1964)* - Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke..dancing on roof tops...London Circa 1910....Kites..fun!! *3) _That Darn Cat!_ (1965)* - A great cast: Hayley Mills, Dean Jones,Elsa Lanchester, Roddy McDowall, Frank Gorshin, a cat who joins the FBI & robbers (I love when Zeke Kelso (Dean Jones) gets DC's paw prints on the ink all over the bathroom!..LOL!) ... Makes me feel like a kid every time I watch it! Should have got an Oscar Nod for something! Runner Up Would Be: _The Cat from Outer Space_ (1978). 4) *_Bedknobs and Broomsticks_ (1971)* - Another Live Action Disney where all the right elements were in place..director... cast (Angela Lansbury and David Tomlinson - Most Notably!).... I think _The Black Hole_ (1979) is an allegory for Life & death, G_D, etc. Very strange film..interesting casting. Very groundbreaking and dark for Disney! The film was nominated for cinematography and visual effects Academy Awards

*_Rock Hudson_* - Very Under-rated. 1) *_Fighter Squadron_ (1948)* - Watch this film for two (2) reasons: A) Hudson made his debut Watch the film with the knowledge that Hudson needed no less than 38 takes before successfully delivering his _only_ _line_ in the film. 2) *_Magnificent Obsession_ (1954)* - Guilty Pleasure! 3) *_Pillow Talk_ (1959)* - The 1 and only time Doris and Rock clicked on film. The rest of there on screen parings pale in comparison. 4) *_The Spiral Road_ (1962)* - A bizarre western with a bizarre cast (Burl Ives & Gena Rowlands.) Very different story. & to think, some people debate _Johnny Guitar_ (1954). 5) *_Ice Station Zebra_ (1968)* - Just a great film. Rock deserved an Oscar Nod for Best Actor.

Interesting Side Notes on the editing floor...??!?? Norma Shearer is entombed in the Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, California, in a crypt marked Norma Shearer Arrouge, along with her first husband Irving Thalberg. Her friend Jean Harlow is in the crypt next door. Thalberg's crypt was engraved "My Sweetheart Forever" by Shearer. F. Ben Gazzara to be honored by Jimmy Stewart museum
CelluloidKid posted a topic in General Discussions
Very...Very Cool....Ben is great actor..Very Under-rated..loved him in Voyage of the Damned_ (1976) & _Anatomy of a Murder_ (1959). Him in _Road House_ (1989) is a guilty over the top acting pleasure! LOL! Jan. 13, 2009. *INDIANA, Pa. (AP) -- Ben Gazzara will be honored with the 2009 Harvey Award by the museum dedicated to Jimmy Stewart*. The 78-year-old actor will receive the award from the James M. Stewart Museum Foundation on April 25. The museum is in Stewart's hometown of Indiana, Pennsylvania, about 45 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The Harvey Award is named for the 1950 film in which Stewart befriends an invisible rabbit. Gazzara co-starred with Stewart in Otto Preminger's "Anatomy of a Murder." He also starred in the '60s TV series "Run for Your Life." Past Harvey Award winners include June Allyson, Janet Leigh, Shirley Jones, Ernest Borgnine and impressionist Rich Little, who will host the dinner honoring Gazzara. - *More Below!* *----------------------------......................................------*. *Stewart museum to honor Gazzara with Harvey Award* By BILL ZIMMERMAN, billz@indianagazette.net Indiana Gazette, PA - Jan 7, 2009 Published: Wednesday, January 7, 2009 Jimmy Stewart appeared in more than 90 film and television productions. The latest recipient of the Jimmy Stewart museum's Harvey Award has been just as prolific, and he's still going. Museum officials announced Tuesday that actor Ben Gazzara, 78, will be the 16th recipient of the award, which will be given April 25 at Chestnut Ridge Resort in Burrell Township. Gazzara, who starred with Stewart in ``Anatomy of a Murder,'' has a career that boasts more than 120 film and television roles, including a run in the 1990s of 38 movies. The award selection was one of three notable announcements from the museum Tuesday. The museum also received permission to offer 53 additional Stewart titles at weekend matinees, and a $6,990 grant that will be used to buy handheld audio guides. Gazzara is the second ``Anatomy of a Murder'' co-star to be recognized by the museum. Kathryn Crosby, the widow of legendary entertainer Bing Crosby, appeared in the film when she was Kathryn Grant and received the museum's George Bailey Award in 2007, the year Crosby was awarded the Harvey posthumously. The 1959 film received eight Oscar nominations, including best picture and best actor for Stewart, but it lost in every category. In 1957, Gazzara made his film debut in ``The Strange One'' after a successful run on Broadway. His other film appearances include ``The Bridge at Remagen,'' ``If It's Tuesday, This Must be Belgium,'' ``Road House'' and ``The Big Lebowski.'' ``I talked to Mr. Gazzara yesterday to go over the format and he's a very, very, very nice person,'' said museum board President Carson Greene. ``He said `I love Jimmy Stewart.' He said that when he was a young actor Jimmy helped him many times. He was just so honored to be chosen as recipient of this award.'' In 2003, Gazzara won an Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a miniseries or movie for his role in ``Hysterical Blindness.'' Before that he was nominated for three Emmys but lost each time. He also received three Golden Globe nominations in the '60s for his role on the TV series ``Run for Your Life'' and three Tony Award nominations in his career. Other recent high-profile roles include the TV movie ``Pope John Paul II'' in 2005 and the feature film ``Dogville'' in 2003. Greene said museum board member Rich Little called three weeks ago to inform him about Gazzara's willingness to receive the award. Little and his frequent partner at museum events, Nick Clooney, will host the evening. Longtime museum volunteer Liz Leeper said Gazzara was one of the few entertainers to call the museum and express their sympathy when Stewart died on July 2, 1997, according to Tim Harley, museum executive director. Gazzara's ``real nice, real easy to talk to. He has a very distinctive voice himself,'' Harley said about the New York City-born actor. The museum gave its last Harvey Award in October to singer/actor Fabian Forte. Message was edited by: CelluloidKid -
