  1. *Kenneth Branagh in talks to star in Laurence Olivier-Marilyn ...‎*

    Published by Jeff Leins

    July 21st, 2010

    News in Film (blog)

The story is based on a diary from the perspective of Colin Clark, a personal assistant to Olivier unofficially assigned to Marilyn Monroe (played by Williams) on the set of 1957?s The Princess and the Showgirl. Clark?s account of the events deliberately left out a week?s worth of details, and the film will supposedly reveal what happened in the missing excerpt.

Branagh only recently wrapped shooting on Marvel?s Thor, but Production Weekly reports he is in talks for the Monroe film which is tentatively scheduled to shoot in September. How Branagh will manage to fit an acting gig into his schedule with the superhero flick in post-production is anyone?s guess. Perhaps he?ll have it ready for 3D conversion by then?

Ralph Fiennes was also considered for the part of Olivier, but his own directorial duties on Coriolanus prevented him from taking the role.

Meanwhile, a second, more broad account of Marilyn?s life is in the works based on Joyce Carol Oates? faux memoir ?Blonde.? Naomi Watts is attached to star.

*Branagh Could Be Spending A 'Week With Marilyn'*

Marilyn Monroe is an iconic actress who we've admired for decades. Of course it's only natural that a few films would be made of her life or experiences during the short duration of it. That's where "My Week with Marilyn" comes in. The Simon Curtis film centers on the small period of time in which Lawrence Olivier chaperones the beautiful Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams) on the set of "The Prince and the Showgirl".

"Thor" director Kenneth Branagh is in the middle of talks to go and take on the lead role and co-star alongside Michelle Williams. The only real problem is when are they going to start rolling on this production and will Branagh still be working on "Thor"? Here's hoping the talented actor has enough time on his plate to go back in front of the camera.

The Marvel Studios production, starring Chris Hemsworth, will be making it's way into theaters everywhere on May 6th, 2011. Be sure to stay on here to check out the sweet Comic-Con coverage we'll be having on that panel and many others.

  2. *Gloria Grahame: Queen of Film Noir*

*What is a crowning achievement of star status?*

Stardom in the eyes of the directors who know more about the subject than anyone else equate the rare phenomenon with the ability to generate interest. They explain that while studying one's craft will make one a better performer that this is a different element than stardom.

There are those with inferior diction and emphasis who have electrified screen audiences. On the other hand, many who have mastered the basic elements of the acting craft were unable to generate the level of excitement that enthralled cinema audiences.

Hollywood born and bred Gloria Grahame was a combination of both, someone who had that indefinable electricity that prompted fans to buy tickets to her films while at the same time delivering her lines in the most professional fashion, her emphasis on consistent perfection.

Grahame attended Hollywood High, as did some of the greatest performers in the history of film, such as Lana Turner and Mickey Rooney to name two of many. She starred in school dramas with someone who made headlines on the world scene, but not in movies.

One of Grahame's leading men at Hollywood High was Warren Christopher, who would one day become America's secretary of state. Years later each was unable to remember appearing with the other.

Gloria Grahame possessed an impressive quality that many stars did not possess. She was able to electrify audiences and leave them begging for more after being on screen for but brief periods of time.

*Los Angeles, CA, United States (AHN) ? Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz?s tandem may currently be getting an average response at the box office, but back in 2001, they frustrated moviegoers. A recent poll conducted by DVD rental company LoveFilm reveals that the part-love story, part-sci-fi flick frustrated more film enthusiasts than any other films. Time-traveling, sleepwalking ?Donnie Darko? comes at third, while ?The Matrix: Revolutions,? the third and final installment of the trilogy, is at fourth.

  7. *French film star Cecile Aubry dies at 81*

*French film star Cecile Aubry, who also wrote the popular 1960s TV series Belle and Sebastian, has died aged 81*

Aubry, who had lung cancer, died near Paris, her family said.

After being signed up by 20th Century Fox aged 20, Aubry went on to star in films like Manon (1949) and The Black Rose (1950), alongside Orson Welles.

She later married a Moroccan prince, and started writing. Their son, Mehdi, played the lead role in Belle and Sebastian.

It was broadcast on French TV in the 1960s, before being picked up by BBC One and turned into a Japanese animated version in 1981 titled Meiken Jolie.

Set in the French Alps, the holiday classic recounts the adventures of an orphaned boy of six and a huge white dog that roams the mountains.

Belle and Sebastian also gave its name to the Scottish indie pop band.

*Actress, author of TV's 'Belle and Sebastian' dies at 81*

PARIS ? Cecile Aubry, a French film star turned author and writer of the popular 60s TV series "Belle and Sebastian", has died aged 81 after a long battle against lung cancer, her family said Tuesday.

Aubry, who in a fairy-tale life was signed up by 20th Century Fox at 20 before marrying a Moroccan prince, died in the Paris suburbs late Monday, relative Virginia Stevenoot told AFP.

Her first film, as the star of Henri-Georges Clouzot's "Manon" in 1949, won the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Mostra and landed her a leading role alongside Tyrone Power and Orson Welles in US director Henry Hathaway's 1950 feature "The Black Rose".

But Aubry's film career was short-lived, interrupted by a secret six-year marriage to the eldest son of the pasha of Marrakesh, Si Brahim El Glaoui.

Their son Mehdi plays young Sebastian in the black-and-white TV show she wrote that was broadcast in France from the mid-1960s before being picked up by BBC1 and turned into a Japanese anime version in 1981 titled "Meiken Jolie".

Mehdi also sings the final song in the adventure series.

"Belle and Sebastian", which spawned two sequels in France, also gave its name to the Scottish indie pop band.

Set in the French Alps, the holiday classic recounts the adventures of an orphaned boy of six and a huge white dog that roams the mountains. It has also been turned into a book.

  8. *Love this film ...wish they could find the cut footage!*

*Premiere voted this movie as one of "The 25 Most Dangerous Movies".*

Although production chief Irving Thalberg decided to re-cut the picture immediately after the disastrous test screening, he could not cancel the world premiere on January 28, 1932 at the 3,000-seat Fox Theatre in San Diego. This is the only venue at which the uncut version of "Freaks" is known to have played. Ironically, the unexpurgated "Freaks" was a major box-office success. Crowds lined up around the block to see the picture, which broke the theatre's house record. By the end of the run, word had spread that "Freaks" was about to be butchered, and the theatre advertised, "Your last opportunity to see 'Freaks' in its uncensored form!"

  10. *HAYLEY MILLS IS HAPPY AT 64*

    Wednesday July 14,2010

*FOR many she will forever be the girl from 1961?s The Parent Trap and even Hayley Mills can?t quite believe she?s now 64.*

The daughter of Sir John Mills, who splits her time between New York and London, says she?s thrilled she?s still breathing. ?I have an absolutely lovely life,? she tells The Lady magazine.

?I?m still alive, which is a good start, still working, surrounded by children, a grandson and the most wonderful man actor Firdous Bamji, 44 I could wish for.?

Hayley, now starring in Wild At Heart, recalls listening to The Beatles? When I?m 64 in her youth.

?It sounded so old to me, she says. ?Now that I am 64 it seems little more than a number to me.

?Isn?t it nice to not be consumed with anxiety about that pimple on the end of your nose that seemed so important in your teenage years??

  11. *Magnolia Acquires Casey Affleck Documentary About Joaquin Phoenix*

    Sunday July 18, 2010

*Oscar-nominee Casey Affleck's directorial debut, a feature length documentary entitled I'm Still Here, has been acquired by Magnolia Pictures for worldwide distribution.*

The film chronicles a tumultuous year in the life of Joaquin Phoenix, beginning when the movie star announced that he was giving up his acting career to reinvent himself as a hip hop musician.

From February of 2009, when Affleck and Phoenix -- who are, by the way, brothers-in-law -- announced their career shifts -- Casey to filmmaking, Joaquin to musicmaking -- there's been speculation about whether the film is a verite documentary account of the performer's transition from one genre to another, or a mockumentary about the artistic process and celebrity.

Magnolia, which describes the film as "funny, sometimes shocking, and always riveting" isn't offering further comments about style or content, so we'll have to wait until the September 10 release date to get a better idea of the film's intention and style.
