Per Wikipedia: *_Olive Thomas_ (October 20, 1894 ? September 10, 1920)* *Olive Thomas was an American silent film actress and socialite. She was a Ziegfeld girl and the original flapper. She is perhaps best remembered for her marriage to Jack Pickford and her untimely death*. *Olive accidentally ingested bi-chloride of mercury from a French-labeled bottle in a darkened bathroom, believing it to be another medication, and she died from it not long after. The death made worldwide headlines and it was finally ruled accidental. Had Olive not died so young, she would always be remembered as one of the finest actresses of the silent era. With the advent of sound pictures, she would have no doubt continued her dazzling career. Olive Thomas, who was considered to be one of the world's great beauties, was only 20 when she died.* *In 2007, McFarland Publishing Company released a biography entitled _Olive Thomas: The Life and Death of a Silent Film Beauty_, written by Michelle Vogel.* *_Filmography:_* Everybody's Sweetheart (1920) Darling Mine (1920) The Flapper (1920) Youthful Folly (1920) Footlights and Shadows (1920) Out Yonder (1919) The Glorious Lady (1919) The Spite Bride (1919) Prudence on Broadway (1919) Love's Prisoner (1919) Upstairs and Down (1919) The Follies Girl (1919) Toton the Apache (1919) Heiress for a Day (1918) Limousine Life (1918) Betty Takes a Hand (1918) Tom Sawyer (Uncredited, 1917) Indiscreet Corinne (1917) Broadway Arizona (1917) An Even Break (1917) Madcap Madge (1917) A Girl Like That (1917) Beatrice Fairfax (Episode 10, 1916) *_Writer_* Youthful Folly (1920) *_Trivia:_* *Her ghost has been said to haunt the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York City.* -

One of her finest roles was as the prostitute, Jenny LeGrand, in the 1932 pre-Code movie, _Skyscraper Souls_, which starred Warren William and a young Maureen O'Sullivan. Her body was featured in a poster labeling her "The Ideal Movie Star", which discussed her body parts and measurements, and another actress who possessed one comparable for each. -

*I'm a huge William Castle fan, I was surprised to find not to find a thread about him.* *Well this thread is for William Castle & for all of William Castle's fans!* *William Castle (April 24, 1914 - May 31, 1977) was an American film director, producer, and actor.* *William Castle was born William Schloss in 1914. He began his career in show business as a teenager where he worked on Broadway in a number of different jobs. At the age of 29, he directed his first Hollywood film, "_The Lady from Shanghai_" with legendary actor and director, Orson Welles. Castle's genius was discovered upon the production and direction of many different low budget horror films as he found inventive ways to market the films to young and young at heart audiences.* *Although Castle's films were relatively low-budget vehicles, he was fortunate enough to feature some well-known actors in many of his pictures. When he directed Joan Crawford in "_Strait Jacket_," he didn't need any gimmicks as he had the lure of Joan Crawford, who was fresh from "_Whatever Happened To Baby Jane_" as his star. In "_Strait Jacket_," an aging Crawford plays a former mental patient recently released from an asylum where she spent twenty years after murdering her husband and his lover with an axe.* *Other films Castle made, particularly in the late 1950s and early 1960s, didn't have well-known stars to draw an audience. They were made with very little money, few "special effects" and less than stellar scripts. Castle began to invent ways to make these films seem much scarier than they were.* *His first foray into gimmicky advertising was for the 1958 film, "_Macabre_." Castle gave theatergoers a $1,000 life insurance policy from Lloyd's of London that could be cashed in by their loved ones in case they were frightened to death during the film.* _Per Wikipedia_: William Schloss was born in New York City to a Jewish family. Schloss means "castle" in German, and Castle probably chose to translate his surname into English to avoid the discrimination often encountered by Jewish entertainers of his time. He spent most of his teenage years working on Broadway in a number of jobs ranging from set building to acting. This put him in a good stead to become a director, and he left for Hollywood at the age of 23, going on to direct his first film 6 years later. He also worked an as assistant to director Orson Welles, doing much of the second unit location work for Welles' noir classic, _The Lady from Shanghai_. He also produced, and had a brief non-speaking role in, Roman Polanski's film _Rosemary's Baby_ (1968). (Castle is the grey-haired man lurking outside the phone booth while Mia Farrow is attempting to get in touch with the obstetrician.) *A documentary focusing on Castle's life, _Spine Tingler! The William Castle Story_, directed by Jeffrey Schwarz, had its premiere at AFI FEST 2007 in Los Angeles on November 8, 2007. It won the Audience Award for Best Documentary* *_Films by Castle:_* Bug (1975, writer/producer) Shanks (1974) Rosemary's Baby (1968, producer only) Project X (1968) The Spirit Is Willing (1967) The Busy Body (1967) Let's Kill Uncle (1966) I Saw What You Did (1965) Night Walker (1964) Strait-Jacket (1964) The Old Dark House (1963) 13 Frightened Girls (1963) Zotz!
