  11. *Natalie Wood was such a strange actress. I never cared much for her. Some of her film choices were interesting to say the least.* No matter how much I try, I never can get through a 2nd viewing of: _Inside Daisy Clover_ (1965). I just thought this film was bad. Natalie did give an "OK" performance, nothing to jump-up-&-down and shout about! My mother always like _Love with the Proper Stranger_ (1963), but very datged today! _The Silver Chalice_ is the one (1) Natalie film I would say is her worst. I did always like: _Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice_ . The one (1) Natalie film I have always wanted to see, but haven't due to its unavailability is: _From Here to Eternity_ (TV series) - Natalie Wood won the 1980 Golden Globe for Best TV Actress - Drama.
  12. *'Jaws' took a bite out of movie history 35 years ago this week‎* June 21, 2010 *Susan King covers classic Hollywood for the Hero Complex blog. Here, she dips a toe into the history of the first summer blockbuster, "Jaws," which was released 35 years ago this week.* Duh-dum ... duh-dum ... Movie audiences didn?t know what hit them -- or bit them -- 35 years ago this week as ?Jaws? became the cinematic sensation of 1975. The lazy, hazy days of summer and summer movies would never be quite the same. On June 20, 1975, Universal released the first true summer blockbuster, ?Jaws,? to 466 theaters across the country. Wide distribution of a film was practically unheard of in those days. Usually, a studio would release a film piecemeal, with limited engagements in the big cities before finally entering neighborhood theaters. Back in Los Angeles, for example, the old Cinerama Dome would have exclusive engagements of the biggest films. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2010/06/jaws-movie-35th-anniversary.html

  14. The history books should tell it that it was composer George Antheil & Hedy Lamarr that submitted the idea of a secret communication system in June 1941. On August 11, 1942, U.S. Patent 2,292,387 was granted to Antheil and "Hedy Kiesler Markey", Lamarr's married name at the time. This early version of frequency hopping used a piano roll to change between 88 frequencies and was intended to make radio-guided torpedoes harder for enemies to detect or jam. Despite no formal scientific training, Hedy Lamarr had an exceptional scientific mind, and with her co-inventor George Antheil, they developed a system for radio communication today that is at the core of many communications systems, including the GSM cell phone system that is in use by over 1.2 billion subscribers worldwide. Hedy Lamarr and George Antheil first met in 1940 when they both lived in Hollywood. Antheil was an accomplished musician and concert pianist. Being neighbours they often talked and Lamarr mentioned that she had an idea that she was thinking of contributing to the newly established National Inventors Council in Washington. http://www.radio-electronics.com/info/radio_history/gtnames/hedy_lamarr.php *Hollywood actress Hedy Lamarr also was inducted (08-22-2003) (posthumously) into the* *Hall of Fame of the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE).* Thanks also, American History Revised: 200 Startling Facts That Never Made It into the Textbooks by Seymour Morris, Jr.,
  15. *_The Trials of Oscar Wilde_ (1960)* The producers, Irving Allen and Albert R. Broccoli took a chance and financed the film themselves. The film dealt with Oscar Wilde?s homosexuality, so very few theaters would play the film. It almost put the Producers to bankruptcy, and broke up the partnership between them. But in Europe it was a great artistic success and won several foreign awards. The film won the Golden Globe Award for Best English-Language Foreign Film. Peter Finch won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and the film also received four other BAFTA nominations including Best British Film, Best Film from any source and for John Fraser as Best British Actor. Peter Finch (tied with Bambang Hermanto) also received the Best Actor Award at the Moscow International Film Festival.

No extras are specified, but I'm sure we'll know more soon enough. http://hollywood-elsewhere.com/arthouse/2010/06/pirates-of-penzance-at-last.php

  19. A different group of classics are coming to DVD courtesy of Olive Films, releasing a number of Paramount catalog titles starting on July 27 2010. "Thank God it's only a motion picture!" boasts the 1965 disaster flick, _Crack in the World_. Seven years before _I Spit On Your Grave_, it was Raquel Welch getting raped and seeking vengeance in the western, _Hannie Caulder_ (1971). Then they have a trio of crime stories including Charlton Heston in 1950's _Dark City_, William Holden in _Union Station_ and Alan Ladd in _Appointment with Danger_, which co-stars Dragnet's Jack Webb and Harry Morgan. On Sept. 7 2010 they will also release the 1980 miniseries, _Playing for Time_, which featured Vanessa Redgrave as a concentration camp captive just a few years after railing against those "Zionist hoodlums" at the Oscars after winning hers for Julia.
  20. The book leaves you for a loss of words. I have read the book twice, and both times I'm left empty!
  21. *_Letty Lynton_ (1932)!!!!!!!* The film has since become famous due to its unavailability. The film is also remembered for the "Letty Lynton dress", designed by Adrian: a white cotton organdy gown with large ruffled sleeves, puffed at the shoulder. Macy's department store copied the dress in 1932, and it sold over 500,000 replicas nationwide. This film has been unavailable since a US Federal court ruled on January 17, 1936 that the script used by MGM followed too closely the play Dishonored Lady (1930) by Edward Sheldon and Margaret Ayer Barnes without acquiring the rights to the play or giving credit. On July 28, 1939, the US Second Court of Appeals awarded one-fifth of the net of Letty Lynton to plaintiffs Sheldon and Ayer Barnes in their plagiarism action against MGM. This case was said to be the first copyright decision ever to direct the apportionment of profits on the relative basis as in patent suits where a patent has been appropriated. On November 7, 1939, MGM petitioned the United States Supreme Court to overturn the Court of Appeals ruling, stating that the questions arising in the suit were predicated solely upon the copyright laws of the U.S., and not the patent laws. However, MGM did not prevail in this latter action, and the film is unavailable even to this day save for some bootlegged copies. In 1947, United Artists released the film _Dishonored Lady_, starring Hedy Lamarr and directed by Robert Stevenson, based on the play by Sheldon and Ayer Barnes
