  1. *Did You Know................* _Mildred Pierce_ (1945) Bette Davis and Rosalind Russell turned down the title role, and Barbara Stanwyck was very keen to take it, but Joan Crawford got in first and it earned her an Academy Award. Joan Crawford had been under contract with Warner Brothers for two years before starring in this movie. To get the role, she had to submit to a screen test after years of flops at MGM--her previous studio--and turning down several scripts at Warner Brothers. Shirley Temple was originally considered for the part of Veda Pierce. Shooting the early scenes, director Michael Curtiz accused Joan Crawford of needlessly glamorizing her working mother role. She insisted she was buying her character's clothes off the rack, but didn't mention that her own dressmaker was fitting the waists and padding out the shoulders. Jack L. Warner originally wanted Vincent Sherman to direct the film but Jerry Wald held out for Michael Curtiz.
  2. I'm tired of all this BS.... David "Dave" Thomas named the restaurant "Wendy's" after his two-year-old daughter Melinda Lou, whose nickname was Wendy, stemming from the child's inability to say her own name at a young age. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Thomas_ (American_businessman)

Trouble follows when an eccentric millionaire bequeaths his fortune - and his baseball team - to his pet cat! Now the team?s publicist (Milland) must convince the players that Rhubarb is the key to their success, at the same time evading gangsters and avoiding the wrath of his lovely - and allergic - fiancee!
  9. By Craig Mazin Entertainment Correspondent - Every other Sunday Frank Sinatra once said, with his customary brand of elegant cadence: "You gotta love livin' baby, cause dyin's a pain." Ol' Blue Eyes didn't disregard his own advice. On top of being one of the biggest singing stars of the last century, Sinatra led a furious lifestyle, consorting and carousing on a daily basis with presidents, starlets, mob bosses, and big-name athletes. But though Frank loved livin', he wasn't too keen on tellin'. Sinatra was violently secretive of his exploits. He would often threaten journalists with physical harm if they wrote a word about his personal life, and was notoriously reluctant to grant interviews. It's no surprise then that some of the best Sinatra anecdotes have flown under the radar. For example, his on-and-off affair with Marilyn Monroe was kept on the down low, and it's typically only his hardcore fans are aware that he was inspired to sing after hearing Bing Crosby, his future rival, on the radio. *Here are five other fact you might not have known about the "Chairman of the Board."* *1- Sinatra refused McCartney's songwriting* In 1966, fresh off churning out perhaps the Beatles' most accomplished album, Revolver, Paul McCartney's songwriting powers were at their peak. Paul, never one to underestimate his considerable abilities, deigned to stretch beyond his usual pallet of rock screamers and dreamy ballads to write a swingin' song specifically for Frank Sinatra. Flush with success, he dashed off a tune called "Suicide," reeled off a demo tape and sent it to Sinatra's managers. Sinatra, who had once called rock and roll "music for cretins and goons," took one listen to the track and, thinking it was a joke, passed. In later years, his judgment no longer clouded by the pot and acid-speckled haze of the '60s, McCartney admitted that the song was likely "crap" and that Sinatra was wise to pass. Sinatra would go on to cover a Beatles song in concert, and, perhaps still a bit apologetic for not recording "Suicide," offered Macca undeserved credit, calling the George Harrison-penned "Something" a "Lennon-McCartney classic." *2- Sinatra went Republican to spite JFK* A loyal Democrat from the days of the New Deal, Sinatra was a huge supporter of JFK. He palled around and golfed with the president, set the married Kennedy up with the occasional lovely lady and for good measure, allegedly helped convince mob boss Sam Giancana to use "persuasive" polling methods to help deliver Illinois and West Virginia in the 1960 presidential election. All of this good clean fun didn't escape the notice of Kennedy's (relatively) straight-arrow brother Bobby, the Attorney General for the administration. Bobby, who had made his name pursuing the mob as a prosecutor, convinced the oversexed Commander-in-Chief that associating with the juiced-in Sinatra wasn't particularly good for his political future. It was thus that a reluctant Kennedy gave up the good times (and the unending parade of prime tail) and began to distance himself from the Chairman of the Board. This change in attitude was felt most dramatically when Kennedy, who had planned to stay at Sinatra's home in Palm Springs during a California visit in March 1962, instead abruptly decided to stay over with rival singer Bing Crosby, a known Republican. Sinatra, who had built a heli-pad on his roof at the prospect of a presidential visit, took the snub with customary restraint, attacking the newly built apparatus with a sledgehammer in the midst of a hysterical tantrum. Sinatra was immensely bitter at Kennedy's fair-weather association, and would soon switch his party allegiance altogether. Sinatra went on to throw his public support behind future Republican presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George Bush. *3- Sinatra always carried a roll of dimes* Before December 8, 1963, Frank Sinatra Jr. was just another celebrity offspring struggling to emerge from the shadow of his famous parent. By the next day, he was the victim of a bizarre plot to extract cash from his rich father. Trying to launch an independent singing career, Sinatra Jr. was due to perform at a Lake Tahoe casino on the night of the 8th, when he was confronted by a group of three men at gunpoint. The trio managed to abduct the 19-year-old from the casino, and took him to an undisclosed hideout. The kidnappers, who included a high school friend of Frank's sister Nancy, held Sinatra Jr. captive for three days, until his famous father paid a $240,000 ransom to ensure his son's safe return. The abductors were later found and arrested. But the incident had left a permanent mark on Sinatra. Because the kidnappers had demanded that Sinatra call them only from payphones, he carried a roll of dimes with him throughout the ordeal. This became a lifetime habit, and Sinatra continued to carry 50 dimes with him wherever he went until -- and after -- his death in 1998. To commemorate this acquired routine, family and friends reportedly buried Sinatra with a roll of dimes in his jacket pocket. *4- Sinatra was charged with adultery* Mob ties, copious consumption and countless brawls -- given that all of these constants during Sinatra's lengthy career, it might be a shock that the only criminal charge ever levied his way was for the earthshaking crime of... adultery. Nevertheless, Sinatra's legendary status as a womanizer makes it inappropriately appropriate that he earned his only mug shot for having sex with somebody else's wife. The incident took place in 1938, before Sinatra's career took off, when he was caught in a compromising position with an undisclosed lady near his hometown in north New Jersey. Back then, adultery was on the books as a criminal offence, and Sinatra was dragged off to the police station for, uh, fingerprinting. After being assessed an initial fine of $500, Sinatra managed to elude punishment when the charge was later dropped due to a withdrawal of the complaint. Not that he learned from his arrest. Over the next few decades, the insatiable Sinatra would make a habit of cuckolding countless hapless husbands, including Humphrey Bogart. Luckily for him, by that time it was no longer a criminal offense. *5- Sinatra was a mob courier* Sinatra's longtime friendships and connections with Mafia bosses have been well documented. But, according to Jerry Lewis, Sinatra wasn't satisfied just rubbing shoulders with his mobster cronies. He actually volunteered to go to work for his mob buddies -- as a money courier. Lewis claimed that, in the late '40s, Sinatra struck a deal over drinks with mobster Meyer Lansky after he heard that Lansky was looking to extend his reach beyond the mob's New York and Chicago bases. Sinatra wanted in, and he was sent to a New York airport with a suitcase filled with $3.5 million. Customs officers stopped Sinatra and opened the case. But the crowd of fans surrounding the customs booth began pushing and shoving, prompting the officers to cut their search short. Do you have to ask? Sinatra's status as a music icon is matched or exceeded only by Elvis, Dylan and the Beatles. He had dozens of No. 1 hits, countless bestselling albums, and he pioneered a clipped, mellow singing style that would define pop song phrasing. To top it off, Sinatra was also a distinguished actor, starring in such all-time great movies as _The Manchurian Candidate_ (1962) and _From Here to Eternity_ (1953), for which he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

  16. *Gary Cooper can be seen (Summer Under The Stars: Ingrid Bergman!) in the film "_Saratoga Trunk_" Mon, Aug 25, 7:45 AM (Eastern Time..Check Local Listings!)* After Cooper and Bergman scored in _FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS_ at Paramount, this film was rushed into production in February 1943 and finished in late May. It was not released to the general public until after the end of WW II but had been seen for almost two years by members of the armed forces. It was one of several movies made but not released during the war by Warner Brothers. The others were _DEVOTION,_ _MY REPUTATION_, and _THE TWO MRS. CARROLLS_, which didn't come out until 1947. Here, screenwriter Robinson took Ferber's best-seller, an essentially shallow romance novel, and adapted it well enough for the two stars to merit a huge box-office return for the time, upwards of $5 million.
