  1. *Did You Know.....* In "_The Day the Earth Stood Still_"* *The role of Gort was played by Lock Martin, the doorman from Grauman's Chinese Theater, because he was extremely tall. However, he was unable to pick up Helen because he was so weak and had to be aided by wires (in shots from the back where he's carrying her, it's actually a lightweight dummy in his arms). He also had difficulty with the heavy Gort suit and could only stay in it for about a half-hour at a time.* *The original choice of actor to play the alien visitor was Spencer Tracy.* *In line with the film's Christian allegory, Klaatu adopts the name _"Carpenter_" when hiding out from the authorities. Robert Wise hadn't considered the Christian implications until it was pointed out to him several years later.* *Ranked #5 on the American Film Institute's list of the 10 greatest films in the genre "Sci-Fi" in June 2008.* *The film was shot on the 20th Century-Fox back lot, which is now an upscale office complex known as Century City* :LO( Thanks, IMBD
  2. *Marilyn Monroe ..Never Before....Never Again June 1, 1926 ? August 5, 1962!*
  3. *You should also check out the article that I posted in "_Hot Topics_" that relates to this board:* *Thread: Seven Men Gone Too Soon..........* http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?messageID=8129800 *Do not grieve at the passing of mortality, for life's but a thing of terrible gravity. And the planets gravitate around you, and the stars shall dance about you, and the angels in heaven adore you,and the saints all stand and applaud you.* *So faraway,so faraway and yet so close.* *Nick Cave,* *"Far Away, So Close"* *-Anonymous*

  5. Louise Closser Hale was in the film: "_Dinner at Eight_" W./Jean Harlow! *NEW STAR: Jean Harlow!!*
  6. indivisible: "_Yankee Doodle Dandy_" *NEW WORD: Smuggler*
  7. It's sad that everyone but Reynolds, Luhnmann, Donen and Behlmer are dead! When I got the DVD (As a Gift) was really excited about the commentary, then I saw that Cyd Charisse was on it as well. I was like wow, we just lost her. I haven't heard the commentary yet.
  8. I have to say some of the films from the 80's are Classics...more like "Contemporary Classics"...but a film like "Troy" (Which was god awfull!) is "NOT" a classic! My makes a film a "Classic"..?? Visually Appealing....dalogue.....characters...good actors..?? I think the word "Classic" is very debatable!? I don't think there is such a thing as a perfect film in an objective sense. When someone watches a film, they subconsciously apply their own subjective criteria to it.
  9. *Brad Renfro* *Rudolph Valentino* *Carole Lombard*
  10. Yes Welcome.. You can always star W./the book: _1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die_ By: Lucy Summers! Me...I always recommend films W./ Jean Harlow (Saratoga, China Seas, Dinner at Eight) Joan Crawford (Mildred Pierce & Sadie McKee) Marilyn Monroe (The Misfits & Gentlemen Prefer Blondes) Gene Kelly (Singing in the Rain) Bette Davis (All About Eve & The Letter & Dark Victory) Also, I love french films & I always recommend "_The Umbrellas of Cherbourg_" (French: Les Parapluies de Cherbourg) W./Catherine Deneuve! This film is a must see since the film dialogue is all sung as recitative, even the most casual conversation. My mother, was a huge film buff & this was 1 film she got me hooked on.
  11. I depends on what the teenager considers a classic film. I think it's funny I work with kids in there 20's and when I state a film like "_The Breakfast Club_" or even "_Star Wars_" they consider this "Old School"! LOL! Or when my work computer screensaver pops up W./Joan Crawford, they even ask me who is that. When I explain who she is, or even about TCM, they shake there heads! What is funny, is that a bunch of Classic 80's films that got repackaged as the "I Love The 80s Edition" which includes an 80's Music CD. Some titles include: "_Pretty in Pink_", "_Top Gun_", "_Fatal Attraction_". I remember seeing these when they 1st hit theaters, in the dawn of the age of VCR's, & back then they were great films, today they are considerd "Classics". LOL..I'm ony in my early 30's, but when you call a film I saw 15+ Yrs ago (Or even sooner) a "Classic" this makes me feel old!
  12. Joan Crawford & Clarence Brown Joan Crawford & George Cukor Gene Kelly & Stanley Donen
  13. *Irving Thalberg, Norma Shearer with L.B. Mayer*
  14. *Alfred Steele, Joan Crawford, Evelyn Echols (left to right)*
  15. *July 27, 1936 - "Chained" - 60 minutes.* *Starring Joan as Diane Lovering and Franchot Tone as Michael Bradley. Franchot Tone, Joan's second husband, appeared with Joan on this hour-long program.* *Franchot encouraged Joan to explore radio broadcasts. This would be the first of several radio appearances Joan and Franchot would do together. "Chained" was also a film that Joan Crawford made with Clark Gable in 1934*.
  16. *I always loved the fact when Marilyn Monore was told she was not the star of the film, Marilyn Monroe was quoted as saying: "Well whatever I am, I'm still the blonde."!!!* *Bit of Trivia:* *Originally bought by Fox as a vehicle for Betty Grable. After the success of Niagara (1953) (which featured Marilyn Monroe), however, the studio believed they had a more potent and far less expensive sex symbol than Grable (who was earning around $150,000 per picture vs. Monroe's $18,000).*
  17. I just bought "_Singin' in the Rain_" on DVD (Two-Disc Special Edition) ! What is is sad is the commentary on the DVD contain a feature-length audio commentary with Debbie Reynolds, Donald O'Connor, Cyd Charisse, actress Kathleen Freeman, Betty Comden, Adolph Green, co-director Stanley Donen, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, and film historian Rudy Behlmer. Also, the DVD contains: a 36-minute making-of documentary titled "What a Glorious Feeling"; an 86-minute documentary titled "Musicals Great Musicals: The Arthur Freed Unit at MGM"; 12 excerpts from old movies showing performances of Freed's songs; and the deleted sequence featuring the musical number "You Are My Lucky Star." It's often claimed that "Singin' in the Rain" is the greatest screen musical of all-time, and I agree.
  18. Previously released in a myriad of standard DVD editions, Koch will give 'Black Christmas' its first-ever high-def release on November 11, 2008! Just in time for the holidays, Koch Releasing has announced it is bringing the 1974 horror classic _'Black Christmas'_ to Blu-ray in early November. Not to be confused with the dreadful 2006 remake, the original Bob Clark-directed 'Black Christmas' is often regarded as the "lost" horror epic, predating the slasher craze of the late '70s with its pioneering mix of atmosphere and knife-wielding chills. Previously released in a myriad of standard DVD editions, Koch will give 'Black Christmas' its first-ever high-def release on November 11, 2008. There are no tech specs or supplement details yet for the Blu-ray!
