  1. *The one (1) question that kept running through my mind as I watched the film was, Who really would have paid to sit through this film? Where would a film like this play?* *Back in the 60's there were no "Art House" theaters per-say.* *At times, as _Night Tide_ (1961) went on, I felt as if I was watching paint dry on the wall. At times haunting, others time it would grab your attention...and then other points you wanted to fight sleep!* *Dennis sure picked strange roles!* *Anyone on the boards remember Dennis in: "The Twilight Zone _He's Alive_ (1963)* "He's Alive" is a fourth-season episode of The Twilight Zone. It tells of an American neo-Nazi who is inspired by the ghost of Adolf Hitler. A personal passion of Rod Serling, it concludes that figures such as Hitler will always be alive so long as prejudice and ignorance persist. *Dennis Hopper in He's Alive*
  2. Tallulah Bankhead .......... Marlon Brando, who co-starred with her in the play "The Eagle Has Two Heads" in the mid-1940s, said that Bankhead was primarily a personality actor--that is, someone who did not have developed acting skills but got by on the basis of their personality. Brando believed that she could have been a great actress and a major movie star if she hadn't been addicted to sex and alcohol. *Celebri-links ............ Marlon Brando!*

  4. *My favorite book on _Steve McQueen_ !* *Just photos .. but great pictures!!* Steve McQueen (1930-1980) and William Claxton became friends early in McQueen's career and remained close until his premature death. Claxton frequented McQueen throughout his many incarnations (daredevil, dirt biker, movie star, sports car driver, ladies man, family man, etc.), capturing at every turn another side of McQueen's enigmatic tough-guy/nice-guy personality. As this photo album demonstrates, Claxton's photographic talent and sensibilities were perfectly attuned to the actor's multifaceted character. This is the real Steve McQueen, immortalized by Claxton's empathetic lens.
  5. COMING IN 2010: _Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel_ Publisher: Plexus Publishing (October 1, 2010) *_From Publishers Weekly_* McQueen (1930-1980) was born in Indiana and grew up fatherless with an alcoholic mother. After stints in a reform school and the Marine Corp., he landed in New York City where he caught the acting bug. He soon won an acting scholarship and in 1956 got his break in the film Somebody Up There Likes Me . That same year he met and married dancer Neile Adams. The TV series, Wanted: Dead or Alive , brought him to the attention of director John Sturges who cast him in The Magnificent Seven . Three years later The Great Escape made him a star. The strength of this book lies in the history the author has compiled on McQueen's 28 films--their genesis, their filming and how the critics and the paying public responded. Terrill also delves into the offscreen side of McQueen: his passion for motorcyles, fast cars and bedding his female co-stars. The author goes on to chronicle McQueen's frequent, admitted use of LSD, marijuana and cocaine; his revulsion of homosexuals; his divorce and his subsequent marriages to actress Ali McGraw and model Barbara Minty; and, finally, his battle against lung cancer. Terrill, a dealer of Beatles' memorabilia, makes a solid impression with his first book. Photos.
  6. _Avant-garde_ means "advance guard" or "vanguard". The adjective form is used in English, to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics. _Night Tide_ fits this description! Very surreal, both in mood and story!
  7. *Angelina Jolie To Star As Cleopatra In New ?Cleopatra? Remake Movie* Friday, June 11th 2010 *Angelina Jolie to star as Cleopatra in new ?Cleopatra? remake movie. According to the New York Daily News, top movie star Angelina Jolie is set to take on the role of Cleopatra in a remake movie of the classic 1963 film, which starred Elizabeth Taylor. They say that Angelina Jolie will play Cleopatra in the new movie entitled, ?Cleopatra: A Life.?* Scott Rudin who is the producer of the film said that the role was developed specifically for Angelina Jolie. He stated, it ?is being developed for and with Jolie.? Stacy Schiff who is the author of the book for which the movie is modeled under, said that she thinks Angelina is perfect for the Cleopatra role. She stated, ?I think she?d be perfect for it and I can see a possible Oscar in her future.? The original 1963 Cleopatra film was the highest grossing film of the year back then. However, it was still a loss for 20th Century Fox because of the $44 million dollars it cost to produce the thing. The author, Stacy Schiff also thinks that Brad Pitt should play the role of Marc Antony. Now, wouldn?t that be convenient, lol!!! You can read the story at New York Daily News. http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/movies/2010/06/11/2010-06-11_angelina_jolie_set_to_take_over_elizabeth_taylors_role_as_cleopatra.html
  8. *Famous film, Valley role lost in time* by Richard Ruelas Jun. 12, 2010 The Arizona Republic *It was Arizona's fortune that Walt Disney filmed a groundbreaking film, the first full-length feature to mix animation with live action, in Phoenix, plucking an elementary-school student out of obscurity to serve as co-star.* He is best remembered for his role as 'Toby' in the 1946 film, "Song Of The South." It also was the state's misfortune that this Disney classic became one that hasn't been screened for nearly 25 years out of concerns about racial and cultural sensitivity. "Song of the South" was supposed to be filmed in Atlanta. After all, it was based on the Uncle Remus stories that first appeared as columns in an Atlanta newspaper. But Disney decided to film in Arizona instead because of technical concerns, according to a history of the film posted on Turner Classic Movies' website. The live-action sequences were filmed mostly in Phoenix, using a ranch property to substitute for the Southern-style mansion in the film. An ad for the movie, which ran in The Republic in 1946, included this extra enticement: "Filmed largely in Phoenix and presenting Glen Leedy, 9-year-old local screen find." The ad spelled Glenn Leedy's name wrong. But he was discovered in Phoenix. According to his obituary, which ran in 2004 the Imperial Valley (Calif.) Press, producers spotted him on a playground of an elementary school. The website songofthesouth.net, which is devoted to the history of the film, said Leedy was discovered at Booker T. Washington Elementary School. Leedy was pegged to play the role of Toby. He was an African-American boy who lived on the plantation and became friends with Johnny, a White boy who is the main character in the film. In a memorable scene, Toby lifts his hat to show a frog he had trapped inside it. Leedy's parents moved him to California after the movie was finished, his obituary said. But Leedy didn't land another movie role. "Song of the South" is the only credit listed for him in the online movie database imdb.com. According to his obituary, Leedy moved to Yuma and was married in 1955. The couple had four children and separated in 1970. Leedy married a second time in 1979 and moved to Los Angeles. He married his third wife in 1994. Leedy died in April 2004 in Brawley, Calif.; he was survived by 13 children. But some of his children would never have had the chance to see "Song of the South" in a movie theater. Or nearly anywhere else, for that matter. The movie was released five times from 1946 through 1986. But Disney executives decided not to screen it again after 1986 out of concerns that it stereotyped African-American characters. Such concerns had been raised as early as 1970, according to a Variety article cited by Turner Classic Movies. The film has been released on home video in Europe and Japan, but never in the United States. Songofthesouth.net contains a petition where fans can ask for the film's release. The website also tracks rumors about Disney reconsidering its decision, none of which has come to pass.
  9. *_Night Tide_ (1961) ... Very Strange film!! _Night Tide_ (1961) reminded me of _Cat People_ (1942) with mermaids. What a very peculiar film!!* Thanks TCM for showing this "Rare" film!! Now I can say I have seen every film that Dennis has done! Seaman Johnny Drake (Dennis Hopper), on shore leave, finds a "Mermaid" sideshow attraction at the marina, operated by Captain Murdock (Gavin Muir). The "Mermaid" Mora (Linda Lawson) and Johnny fall for each other. Mora believes she is a descendant of the Sirens, mythic sea creatures who lure sailors to their deaths. From time to time a mysterious and seemingly sinister woman (Marjorie Cameron) appears and frightens Mora. From this point on, the film just gets uncanny and strange.! This is 1 film I'm glad to have had the chance to finally see. I'm still wondering would this film be called: "Avant-garde"!? I mean at points, the film moved slow... Very sluggish...but it still held my attention! Great cinematography by Vilis Lapenieks.!

  12. *Pam Grier Shakes Off Foxy Brown Image* Arts & Entertainment Written by Shantella Y. Sherman - WI Staff Writer Wednesday, 09 June 2010 *What becomes a sex siren most? In the case of legendary 70s Blaxploitation actress Pam Grier, simply, being Pam. In an ironic douse to the millions of male libidos around the globe, the actress who made being a tough girl sexy seems happiest riding horses and enjoying the great outdoors. But that is not to say that the Colorado native?s life was void of trauma, scandal, or high drama.* Sexual molestation at age six and a rape at 18, anchored much of Grier?s early life. The resulting effects of these traumas included the development of a stuttering impediment that Grier insists still exists. Grier, 61, recently penned a memoir of her life, titled _Foxy: My Life in Three Acts_, which takes readers full-speed, through her triumphs and tragedies. http://www.washingtoninformer.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3865:pam-grier-shakes-off-foxy-brown-image&catid=64:entertainment&Itemid=136

"Mildred Pierce" earned a total of six Academy Award nominations including Best Motion Picture (Warner Bros.), Actress (Joan Crawford), Actress in a Supporting Role (Eve Arden), Actress in a Supporting Role (Ann Blyth), Black-and-White Cinematography (Ernest Haller) and Writing (Ranald MacDougall).
