Veteran publicist and studio exec John Friedkin died May 11 of respiratory failure in Los Angeles. He was 81.
Friedkin moved from heading the New York office of Rogers & Cowan in the mid-1960s to become VP of of Advertising, Publicity and Promotion for 20th Century Fox, where he worked on campaigns for films such as "Star Wars," "Alien," "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," "Julia," "The Turning Point" and all of Mel Brooks' films beginning with "Young Frankenstein." While at Fox he moved from New York to Hollywood, where the studios were consolidating their operations.
In 1979, he moved to Warner Bros. to become VP of International Advertising and Publicity. Among the films he was involved with there were "Blade Runner," "Altered States," "The Right Stuff," and the Oscar-winning "Chariots of Fire." The surprise hit "Mad Max" led to his relationship with director George Miller.
Born in New York, Friedkin graduated Columbia U. He started out as an adman with the Young & Rubicam agency and then launched an entertainment public relations company with Gabe Sumner; their first client was Tony Bennett.
Sumner + Friedkin Associates represented the show "Playhouse 90," as well as writers such as Paddy Chayefsky and Horton Foote. Their clients ranged from Broadway figures including Rodgers and Hammerstein, David Merrick and Manny Azenberg to musicians such as Benny Goodman, comedians including Buddy Hackett and Joey Bishop and authors John D. MacDonald and Budd Schulberg.
After his stints at Fox and Warners, Friedkin became an independent consultant with clients including New Line Cinema, Sony Pictures Classics and Miramax. He was reunited with Miller in 1992 on "Lorenzo's Oil," for which he served as associate producer.
Miller served as unit publicist in austraila for Miller's "Babe" and returned to advise Universal on the Oscar campaign for the film. "Babe" received seven nominations, including picture and director for George Miller and film editing for Friedkin's son, Jay Friedkin. He also served as publicity consultant on the sequel, "Babe: Pig in the City."
Friedkin was a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and volunteered annually for the Foreign Language Film Selection Committee.
He is survived by his wife, Tatiana; son, Jay, a film editor; a brother and a sister.

John Ford Goes to War (2002):
will be shown on Encore Drama Wednesday, June 4th 2008 @1:05am (PT) Arizona Time!
Check Local Listings!
"John Ford Goes to War" runs just under an hour, but it's a thorough portrayal and features commentary from a variety of experts, including relatives and biographers, as well as critics like Andrew Sarris and filmmakers like Oliver Stone. Their words are bolstered by clips from Torpedo Squadron 8 and The Battle of Midway (featuring voice work from Grapes of Wrath star Henry Fonda), although not all of his OSS films were as successful. Produced for Starz, the narration is provided by Kris Kristofferson--another man who knows his way around the western--and should hold great appeal for WWII buffs, film enthusiasts, and Ford fanatics alike. --

Legendary fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent who changed fashion rules by putting women into elegant pantsuits, died on Sunday evening following a long illness. He was 71.
A towering figure of 20th century fashion, Saint Laurent was widely considered the last of a generation that included Christian Dior and Coco Chanel and made Paris the fashion capital of the world.
A prominent figure in the world of society and the arts, Saint Laurent dressed some of the most famous stars. Actress Catherine Denevue modelled for him and Loulou de la Falaise was his muse.
In recent times, Kate Moss has been associated with the YSL brand which includes the Rive Gauche label in clothes and perfumes.
From the first YSL tuxedo and trim pantsuits to see-through blouses, safari jackets and glamorous gowns, Saint Laurent created instant classics that remain stylish decades later.
Saint Laurent was born August 1, 1936, in Oran, Algeria, where his father worked as a shipping executive.
He first emerged as a promising designer at the age of 17, winning first prize in a contest sponsored by the International Wool Secretariat.
When the designer announced his retirement in 2002 at age 65 and the closure of the Paris-based haute couture house he had founded 40 years earlier, it was mourned in the fashion world as the end of an era.
In 1983, he became the first living fashion designer to be honored by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

What burned in the Universal fire
* New York City streetscape: Used in countless movies and television shows. This set burned once before, in 1990, and was rebuilt.
* King Kong: The King Kong exhibit on the Universal Studios tour. The exhibit included a 30-foot-tall moving model of King Kong.
* "Back to the Future" set: The town square, including the courthouse area and the clock tower that plays a central roll in the film.
* a famous alley from "The Sting"
* Video vaults: These vaults contained videos of numerous Universal-produced TV series and movies. Firefighters managed to remove some of the videotapes. "Nothing is lost forever," Universal President Ron Meyer said of the videos.
* Soundstage: At least one full soundstage.

Fire at Universal Studios destroys sets, videos
By GREG RISLING,
Associated Press Writer
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - One of Hollywood's largest movie studios starred in a disastrous sequel Sunday as a fire ripped through a lot at Universal Studios, destroying a set from "Back to the Future," a King Kong exhibit and a streetscape seen frequently in movies and TV shows.
It was the second fire at the historic site in nearly two decades, leveling facades, hollowing out buildings and creating the kind of catastrophe filmmakers relish re-creating. This time around, thousands of videos chronicling Universal's movie and TV shows were destroyed in the blaze.
But Universal officials said that they were thankful no one was seriously injured at the theme park and that the damaged footage can be replaced.
"We have duplicates of everything," said Ron Meyer, NBC Universal president and chief operating officer. "Nothing is lost forever."
The blaze broke out on a sound stage featuring New York brownstone facades around 4:30 a.m. at the 400-acre property, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Michael Freeman said. The fire was contained to the lot, but about 400 firefighters were still trying to put it out several hours later.
"It is one of the longest fires to extinguish because of its complexity and size," said county Fire Capt. Mike Brown.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage was expected to be in the millions of dollars.
The iconic courthouse square from "Back to the Future" was destroyed, and the famous clock tower that enabled Michael J. Fox's character to travel through time was damaged, fire officials said. Two mock New York and New England streets used both for movie-making and as tourist displays were a total loss, Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Darryl Jacobs said.
An exhibit housing a mechanically animated King Kong that bellows at visitors on a tram also was destroyed.
All three sites were either damaged or destroyed during another fire at Universal Studios in November 1990. That fire caused $25 million in damage and was started by a security guard who was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to arson.
Hundreds of visitors who had waited for hours outside the park gates were turned away after officials decided not to open the area. On a typical weekend day, about 25,000 people visit Universal Studios. NBC Universal said in a statement that the park would reopen Monday morning.
Mike Herrick of San Diego watched the fire on television from his hotel before deciding to return to Universal Studios for a second day with his wife.
"By gosh, we're going to go and get whatever we can out of it," Herrick said. On Saturday, Herrick rode the tram that winds around the studio lot, snapping photos of the King Kong attraction, among other sights.
The fire broke out along New York Street, where firefighting helicopters swept in for drops and cranes dumped water on the flames. A thick column of smoke rose thousands of feet into the air and could be seen for miles.
"It looked like a disaster film," said Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge.
Several firefighters suffered minor injuries. One firefighter and a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy were slightly hurt when a pressurized cylinder exploded inside the building housing the videos.
The streetscape that burned recently served as a backdrop in such films as "Bruce Almighty" and television shows including "Monk," "Crossing Jordan" and "House," said NBC Universal spokeswoman Cindy Gardner.
Meyer estimated there were 40,000 to 50,000 videos and reels in a video vault that burned but said duplicates were stored in a different location. Firefighters managed to recover hundreds of titles.
The videos included every film that Universal has produced and footage from television series including "Miami Vice" and "I Love Lucy."
Universal Studios, nine miles north of downtown Los Angeles, has thrill rides and a back lot where movies and television shows are filmed, including scenes from "War of the Worlds," "When Harry Met Sally" and "Scrubs."
The fire will not affect the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, which is to broadcast live Sunday night from the Gibson Amphitheatre in the adjacent Universal CityWalk, according to the music network.

The flames destroyed a set from the Back To The Future movie and a King Kong exhibit.
Thousands of Universal's videos and film reels were damaged, but officials say there are duplicates of the movies and TV episodes stored in a different location.
A vault containing master copies of classic movies was not affected.

Universal Studios Fire Destroys Buildings, Soundstage (Update1)
By Nancy Kercheval
June 1 (Bloomberg) -- An early morning fire at General Electric Co.'s Universal Studios in California destroyed five buildings and a soundstage and forced the theme park to delay its opening. No injuries were reported.
``The fire is on the back lot of the park and CityWalk area'' in Universal City, said Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Frank Garrido. About 300 firefighters and helicopters were pouring water on the burning buildings.
The blaze started about 4:45 a.m., local time, and surpassed the three-alarm stage as more equipment and firefighters arrived, Garrido said. The fire, now confined to one building four hours after the initial call, was expected to be under control by 9:25 a.m.
No cause for the blaze has been determined, Garrido said. Captain Frank Reynoso told CNN that an explosion was reported before the flames were seen.
Universal Studios Hollywood and CityWalk, located north of Los Angeles and less than an hour from Disneyland, delayed its opening for three hours until noon, according to spokeswoman Audrey Eig.
``The back lot tram tour will resume operation tomorrow,'' she said in an e-mail.
The fire didn't affect CityWalk's theaters, restaurants, clubs and shops or the Gibson Amphitheater, Sheraton Universal or Universal Hilton Hotels operations, Eig said.
The Studio Tour visits sets from movies such as ``War of the Worlds,'' ``King Kong,'' and ``The Fast and the Furious'' as well as Wisteria Lane from the ABC television drama ``Desperate Housewives,'' according to the studio's Web site.

Large fire devours movie sets at Universal Studios
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. (AP) ? A massive fire raged on a back lot at Universal Studios early Sunday, devouring several movie sets, including mock New York and New England streets. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Daryl Jacobs said at least one building had burned and as many as three blocks of movie facades were destroyed. Though the fire was contained, it was still raging, Jacobs said.
"The facades are constructed of heavy timber and they tend to burn quite freely," he said.
The blaze broke out just before dawn on a sound stage, fire Capt. Frank Reynoso said. A thick column of smoke rose thousands of feet into the air. For a time, firefighting helicopters swept in to drop water.
More than 100 firefighters were trying to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby brush, Reynoso said.
Universal Studios spokesman Elliot Sekuler said the theme park would open Sunday, though the studio tour would be affected by the blaze. He said filming was going on when it broke out, but had few other details about the fire.
Filming might have been going on at the time the fire broke out and there was at least one explosion, Reynoso said.
Universal Studios is located nine miles north of downtown Los Angeles that has thrill rides and a back lot where movies and television shows are filmed.
Some of the more familiar attractions on the back lot are the clock tower from the "Back To The Future" movies and the house featured in "Psycho."

Behind-the-scenes footage of the last movie ever made by Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable goes on the auction block in June.
Julien's Auctions of Las Vegas is listing opening bids for On Set with the Misfits at $10,000 US to $20,000 US.
It was shot by amateur photographer Stanley Floyd Kilarr, a member of the film crew for The Misfits, a 1961 film directed by John Huston.
Monroe plays an unhappy divorcee, and Gable plays an ex-cowboy and gambler who meet in Reno in the film.
The silent, eight-millimetre On Set with the Misfits includes candid moments with Monroe and Gable, as well as Montgomery Clift, Thelma Ritter and Huston.
The 47-minute film shows the actors preparing for scenes, chatting and relaxing between takes in a shoot set in the Nevada desert.
Monroe's marriage with Arthur Miller, the scriptwriter, broke down during the shooting of The Misfits. She died in August 1962.
Gable had his fourth heart attack just after the shooting was completed and died in November 1960.
"The two things that make it interesting are that very few people knew it even existed, and that the family was able to obtain a copyright," Julien's Auctions president Darren Julien said.
The winning bidder will own the rights to license the footage for documentaries and special-edition DVDs.
Julien's Auctions plans to sell it at an auction of Hollywood memorabilia on June 12, 2008!
