  1. *Is Joaquin Phoenix Really Returning to Acting?*

I think most of us saw this coming: There is a chance that Joaquin Phoenix might be ready to end his self-imposed retirement and return to the big-screen (just in time to save his career). To put it bluntly, Phoenix darn near torpedoed his reputation back in 2008 when he announced his leap into the world of hip-hop. But, there was hope that he had seen the light (or perhaps had finally gotten enough footage for his celebrity melt-down satire) when Shock Till You Drop reported that Phoenix would be playing the master of macabre, Edgar Allan Poe, in the literary thriller The Beautiful Cigar Girl, about the grisly inspiration for Poe's The Mystery of Marie Rog?t. (You can read more about the film over at Horror Squad.)

Of course, nothing is ever that easy when it comes to the actor-turned-hip-hop artist, and there are now reports that the former-actor's rep has denied that Phoenix had signed on for the role. So, we are left wondering, is Phoenix just yanking our chain yet again? The much more likely explanation is that maybe someone let their imagination run away with them in an attempt to get a little attention.

It wasn't all that long ago that Phoenix had become a bit of a handy celebrity punchline, and he did his fair share to give comedians and late-night hosts plenty to work with. But even those who weren't mocking the buffoonery of the formerly celebrated actor were shaking their heads in pity, discussing lost potential along with the usual Hollywood hand-wringing about the price of young fame. But I think there were plenty of us hoping that Phoenix would someday return to what he did best -- and that wasn't bumbling around on-stage to a generic hip-hop beat.

Of course, most of the editorializing has died down now, and there hasn't been a peep out of Phoenix or his supposed music career. Now you might be wondering: what was all that rapping about in the first place, then? Well, at the time, the prevailing theory was that the whole thing was just a giant meta-stunt for a documentary with Casey Affleck, but if that's the case, they are going to have to make some progress, otherwise, most of us are just going to assume that there was no such film, and that this is just the beginning of Phoenix's fall from grace. Plus, we'll just have to get used to the fact that Phoenix the actor is long gone, and all that's left is Phoenix the pop culture urban legend.

So, do you think that Phoenix might return to the big-screen, and more importantly, would you even care?

Update: Reps for the actor have since denied these rumors.

  2. 'Mission: Impossible' star Peter Graves dies at 83

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Peter Graves, the tall, stalwart actor likely best known for his portrayal of Jim Phelps, leader of a gang of special agents who battled evil conspirators in the long-running television series "Mission: Impossible," died Sunday.

Graves died of an apparent heart attack outside his Los Angeles home, about a week shy of his 84th birthday, publicist Sandy Brokaw said.

He had just returned from brunch with his wife and kids and collapsed before he made it into the house, Brokaw said. One of his daughters administered CPR but was unable to revive him. Graves' family doctor visited the house and believed he had a heart attack, Brokaw said.

Although Graves never achieved the stardom his older brother, James Arness, enjoyed as Marshall Matt Dillon on TV's "Gunsmoke," he had a number of memorable roles in both films and television.

Normally cast as a hero, he turned in an unforgettable performance early in his career as the treacherous Nazi spy in Billy Wilder's 1953 prisoner-of-war drama "Stalag 17."

View results for: Peter Graves Mission: Impossible He also masterfully lampooned his straight-arrow image when he portrayed bumbling airline pilot Clarence Oveur in the 1980 disaster movie spoof "Airplane!"

Graves appeared in dozens of films and a handful of television shows in a career of nearly 60 years.

The authority and trust he projected made him a favorite for commercials late in his life, and he was often encouraged to go into politics.

"He had this statesmanlike quality," Brokaw said. "People were always encouraging him to run for office. But he said, 'I like acting. I like being around actors.'"

Graves' career began with cheaply made exploitation films like "It Conquered the World," in which he battled a carrot-shaped monster from Venus, and "Beginning of the World," in which he fought a giant grasshopper.

He later took on equally formidable human villains each week on "Mission: Impossible."

Every show began with Graves, as agent Phelps, listening to a tape of instructions outlining his team's latest mission and explaining that if he or any of his agents were killed or captured "the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions."

The tape always self-destructed within seconds of being played.

The show ran on CBS from 1967 to 1973 and was revived on ABC from 1988 to 1990 with Graves back as the only original cast member.

The actor credited clever writing for the show's success.

"It made you think a little bit and kept you on the edge of your seat because you never knew what was going to happen next," he once said.

  3. *Inner Tube: Betty White confirmed as host of NBC's 'Saturday Night Live' on May 8*

Betty White will host NBC's "Saturday Night Live" May 8, the network confirmed Thursday after weeks of speculation and fan campaigning.

"I can't think of a better way to spend Mother's Day weekend than with Betty White," Lorne Michaels, creator and executive producer of "SNL," said in a statement. The gig will be White's first time on the long-running show.

People.com reported that former cast members Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Molly Shannon, Maya Rudolph, Ana Gasteyer and Rachel Dratch will also appear May 8, though an NBC spokeswoman said she couldn't confirm any guest appearances.

White, who is most famous for her role as Rose on "The Golden Girls," was recently in "The Proposal" alongside Sandra Bullock.

  4. Spencer Tracy was in: _Mannequin_ (1938) with Joan Crawford. Miss Crawford stars as "Jessica Cassidy," a working girl who marries a conniving low-life (Alan Curtis) and is then wooed by a wealthy businessman (Spencer Tracy, in their only film together).

  5. *'Wall Street 2' Gets Bumped to the Fall*

Gordon Gekko's release from prison has been delayed. He was all set to hit the bright lights of Manhattan once again on April 23, showing the young Shia LaBeouf a thing or two about greed and piles of pretty cash. But The Hollywood Reporter posts that the film will no longer be released next month, or even over the summer for that matter. Fox is bumping the Wall Street sequel until the fall -- September 24, to be exact.

What's prompted the studio to push Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps five months? Personally, I wonder if they're hoping to give the film a flashy TIFF premiere and use it as a kick off to awards season -- making it a film relatively fresh on voters' minds when the Academy starts looking towards next year's Oscars. Pretty much all the big films that hit screens in September and October get screened during the Toronto festival these days (or Venice), and I can't see an Oliver Stone film not hitting one of the fest's ritzy gala openings.

Does this bode well for the film? Think what you will about Shia LaBeouf (who, I must say, offered a surprising performance in New York, I Love You), but this puppy has got a lot of star power extending beyond the questionable star. There is, of course, Michael Douglas, but also Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, and recent Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan. If the trailer and cast are any indication, we might just have a worthy sequel on our hands.

*Warner Brothers is in the process of possibly creating an update of the classic film The Wizard of Oz. This idea stems from the recent success of Alice in Wonderland, which depicts a similar story of the girl, Alice, finding herself in a magical world in which she has to figure out what it is that she really wants. The film enjoyed huge profits in its opening weekend, bringing in $210 million worldwide.*

Warner Brothers has two films in the works, though they?re unsure if they would put both into production since they?re similar in topic. The first would be an adaption of the book by L. Frank Baum that sticks more closely to the plot of the story than the original film did. The second idea features Dorothy?s granddaughter returning to Oz to fight evil.

Both of these films sound interesting, and it may be true that the key to making something like this successful is to not try to recreate the original. To attempt to remake too closely a classic of its caliber may be too much.

If Warner Brothers makes the adaptation of the novel, they also hope for the opportunity to turn it into a series. Baum wrote several other stories about different characters? adventures in Oz.

In addition to these two possible films, a film adaptation of the Broadway musical Wicked has been in development for some time. These new projects could disrupt its progress.

  7. *Joan Crawford Can be seen in: _Daisy Kenyon_ (1947) on: Mon, Mar 22, 12:00 PM (Arizona Time.) on Fox Movie Channel | Fox Movie Channel!*

*The Spanish title of the film translates as "between love and sin" but the tale offers few clues as to where one stops and the other begins. The romantic triangle is resolved at the end, more or less, with everyone doing the "right" thing -- but there's hardly a sense of moral triumph. We feel that all the characters are going to remain adrift in a morally ambiguous universe, trying to walk a line that none of them can see clearly. This is noir territory, all right, but strictly domestic, and explored primarily from the point of view of the female protagonist, which distinguishes it from the classic noir cycle.*
