*Warner Bros. Might Take Trip Down Yellow Brick Road with 'Oz' Remake*
The Film Stage (blog) - Kristen Coates
10 March 2010
*In the time of remakes and franchise revitalization, it seems that Warner Bros. has its sights set on a true American classic. According to Steven Zeitchik from the LA Times, the studio is not only determined to remake the beloved childhood musical (as MGM was in 2008), but is actually examining two existing projects with intent of pursuing one for the silver screen. Collider reports that these projects have actually been dead for at least a year, so don?t expect any new movement soon.*
One project, called Oz, is being produced by Temple Hill (Twilight) under Warner?s New Line label. The script for this project has been written by Darren Lemke, a writer on the upcoming Shrek Forever After.
A second ?Wizard of Oz? project, has actually been kicking around Warner Bros. for the past few years. It has been written by Josh Olson (A History of Violence) and focuses on the present day adventures of Dorothy?s granddaughter, who returns to Oz to fight evil. Basil Iwanyk (Clash of the Titans) and his Thunder Road Pictures are set to produce. Todd MacFarlane (Spawn) has also been involved in a producing capacity.
When MacFarlane first discussed the project and his collaboration with Olsen to Variety in 2007, he described that, ?My pitch was ?How do we get people who went to ?Lord of the Rings? to embrace this?? I want to create (an interpretation) that has a 2007 wow factor. You?ve still got Dorothy trapped in an odd place, but she?s much closer to the Ripley from Alien than a helpless singing girl.?
The original 1939 version of The Wizard of Oz starred Judy Garland as Dorothy, a Kansas farm-girl who finds herself whisked away from her sepia-toned world to a colorful land of munchkins and witches. The film was an upbeat musical, which was somewhat of a departure from Frank Baum?s source book. While a darker cinematic version of the story may surprise lovers of the classic film, it might actually bring the tone closer to the original source.
There may still also be questions about the project?s title. Currently, the book?s ?The Wonderful Wizard of Oz? is in the public domain but the film?s ?The Wizard of Oz? is not, as MGM still holds the rights it had secured when it had intended to do a remake a few years ago. Only time will tell.
What do you think about the possibility of this remake?

*Oscar Winner ?The Cove? Finally To Play In Japan!!*
Tuesday, March 9, 2010
.
Winning the Oscar for best feature-length documentary may finally result in The Cove being shown in Japan, where it has effectively been banned, except for a single screening during the Tokyo Film Festival last October, the Wall Street Journal reported today (Tuesday). The film deals with the annual slaughter of dolphins near the town of Taiji. Some Japanese have complained that the movie foists Western values on its audience and that capturing and eating dolphin meat is akin to Western cattle raising and butchering. The Japanese distributor of the film said that it will undergo certain alterations when it is released, including blurring out the faces of some of the residents of Taiji who are seen in it.

*Paramount Rumored to Eye John Hughes' Grisbys Go Broke*
March 8th, 2010
*The late writer-director John Hughes, who was given an Oscar tribute Sunday, has an unproduced screenplay, Grisbys Go Broke, which has been floating around Hollywood and caught the attention of Paramount, which has a long history with Hughes.*
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rumor was that Paramount was interested in picking up the script with hope of turning it into a family comedy with Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland) producing.
However, the studio said that it is not negotiating to purchase the screenplay, which follows a wealthy Chicago family that loses everything and is forced to move to the sticks. But Paramount certainly has no problem with digging back into Hughes material.
Hughes' last feature was Paramount's 2008 Owen Wilson comedy Drillbit Taylor, which began as a Hughes original but was rewritten by Seth Rogen and Kristofor Brown (Hughes' story credit appeared under the pseudonym Edmond Dantes).
The writer-director may have walked away from Hollywood in 1994, but he never lost his desire to write. After his death, family members found reams of unpublished and unproduced material.
Hughes also worked with Fox, Universal and Disney, but many of his 1980s classics were developed at Paramount, including She's Having a Baby, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Some Kind of Wonderful, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Pretty in Pink. (His Home Alone trilogy at Fox grossed more than $800 million worldwide.)
It seems as if the studio, despite Drillbit Taylor disappointing run, would jump at the chance to take part in another Hughes creation. Paramount -- or someone else -- might still go for Grisbys Go Broke.

*'Breathless' (1960) set for re-release! Rialto Pictures returns Godard classic to bigscreen!*
By SHARON SWART
Variety
Sun., Mar. 7, 2010
*Rialto Pictures is bringing Jean-Luc Godard's "Breathless" back to life Stateside in celebration of the pic's 50th anniversary this year.*
The Gotham-based re-release specialist has acquired U.S. theatrical rights to the seminal French New Wave film and will bow a restored 35mm print at Hollywood's Chinese Theater next month.
The new print will make its American premiere as part of the inaugural TCM Classic Film Festival (April 22-25). The restored version was first unveiled at the Berlin Film Festival in February.
A commercial theatrical re-release of "Breathless" kicks off May 28 at New York's Film Forum, followed by a national rollout.
Along with "Breathless," Rialto also picked up theatrical rights to two 1963 Godard films, "Le petit soldat" and "Les Carabiniers." Deal was negotiated with Paris-based Pretty Pictures.
Written with Francois Truffaut, "Breathless" is Godard's feature debut and toplines Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg.
"We've had some of our biggest hits with Godard's amazing, innovative movies of the '60s," said Rialto founder and co-prexy Bruce Goldstein. "But 'Breathless' is in a class by itself. It's not only one of the most important films of the last half-century, still inspiring new generations of moviemakers, but it's just as fun and audacious as it was 50 years ago."
The "Breathless" restoration is the film's first and was supervised by Beatrice Valbin at StudioCanal. English subtitles were revised by film historian Lenny Borger, who also is working on a translation of Godard's latest pic, "Socialisme."
Rialto has shepherded classic films by Federico Fellini, Jean Renoir, Jules Dassin, Vittorio De Sica, Luis Bunuel, Alain Resnais, Akira Kurosawa and Jean-Pierre Melville.
Among its other Godard titles are "Contempt," "Band of Outsiders" and "Masculine, Feminine."

As Young as You Feel (1951)! What a fascinating film!

I bought _As Young as You Feel_ (1951) just for the simple fact for "Marilyn Monroe".
Well, last night with nothing to do, I popped it into the DVD player and watched the film straight through for the first time.
What unusual film. Funny at times, others times, the film really hit home about our current state of times our country is in.
I really do believe this film would have just slipped through the cracks if it wasn't for Marilyn Monroe.
Simple Plot, but with themes of economic hard times, I.E.: inflation, unemployment, energy and high food prices, dollar collapse.
I believe the film should be released in theatrers, or remade for our times.
Any thoughts Or views!?.
