*_You Light Up My Life_ (1977)*

Alan Bates played Bette Midler's ruthless business manager in the 1979 film _The Rose_ directed by: Mark Rydell!
*NEW DIRECTOR: Mark Rydell!*

Timothy Dalton: In 1986, Dalton was the first choice to replace the retiring Roger Moore, but obligations to the film Brenda Starr and the stage productions of Antony and Cleopatra and The Taming of The Shrew kept him from accepting the role. Sam Neill was then screen-tested for the part of Bond, but was ultimately rejected by Albert R. Broccoli. Pierce Brosnan was then approached for the role, but was forced by NBC to turn it down (after initially accepting it) because of his contractual commitments to the television series Remington Steele. By this time, when Dalton completed the filming of Brenda Starr, he was now available to assume the role as James Bond.

*Per _WIkipedia_ ...and trust me I felt the saw way watching: _Saturday Night Fever_ (1977)!. What TCM showed was the "PG" version ...not "R"!*
Both theatrical versions were released on VHS, but only the R-rated version has been released on Laserdisc and DVD.
Two theatrical versions of the film were released: the Original R-rated version and an edited PG-rated version. The R-rated version released in 1977 represented the movie's first run, and totaled 118 minutes.
After the success of the first run, in 1978 the film was re-edited to a PG-rated version and re-released during a second run to attract a wider audience.
The R-rated version contained profanity (the word **** was used 76 times, nudity, drug use and a rape scene, all of which were de-emphasised or completely removed from the PG version.
The retooled PG-rated version totaled 112 minutes, and featured some deleted content. Numerous profanity-filled scenes were replaced with alternate takes of the same scenes that substituted milder language, initially intended for the network television cut. Other PG-inappropriate scenes were simply shortened or deleted. To maintain runtime, a few deleted scenes were added (including Tony dancing with Doreen to "Disco Duck" and Tony running his finger along the cables of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge).

*****'s 100 Greatest Jewish Movie Moments*
By Jenni Miller
Mar 5th 2010
*The whole "Jews run the media" shtick is one I'll never tire of, if only because, well, I'm a Jew in the media. My fellow media-controlling (and far more powerful!) peeps at **** have diligently assembled the 100 greatest Jewish moments in movies, and they are a hoot, as well as a juicy lot of movies to add to your Netflix queue. With plenty of clips from the movies themselves and tons of trivia, this is definitely a well-researched and badass article. Badass like **** cover girl M?lanie Laurent from Inglourious Basterds, not that she was frigging cheated out of a best supporting actress nomination or anything. Except that she was.*
But anyway, this is one thorough list, with trivia about Jewish actors like the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, lesser-known films like Carl Reiner's Where's Poppa?, which features a scene where Ruth Gordon bites her son on the tuchus, classics like Funny Girl, and random and absolutely hilarious one-offs, such as when Ronnie in Role Models finds out the members of KISS are Jewish ("I didn't know Jews could sing like that!").
*Seriously, this is a true feat of extensively researched, Jewish movie nerd awesomeness.*
In light of this year's Jew Bear-tastic Inglourious Basterds sweeping the noms (and perhaps the awards as well, if Harvey Weinstein has any say in it - we'll find out Sunday!), give it a little look, okay? It's Friday, so I know you want to take it easy. But remember, do it before sundown or have your Sabbath goy click through for you. Don't roll on shabbos!

*NEW DIRECTOR: Jesse Hibbs!*

*AMC Best Picture Showcase 2010*
*If you love movies as much as I do, head to _AMC Theaters Best Picture Showcase_ and spend one glorious Saturday enjoying nothing but Best Picture Oscar nominees and unlimited refills on buttered popcorn. It amounts to hours and hours of wonderful lounging--which I have to admit sounds pretty inviting.*
*Things changed in 2010 with 10 Oscar noms, so AMC has split it into two days, February 27th and March 6th.*
*.*
*Tickets are sold in 2 day passes ($60 online, $50 box office) and one day passes are $30.*
*Both gives you an all access pass to all flicks (you can come and go as you please) and did I mention all the popcorn you can handle?*

*So far "Worst" film of 2010, and a Razzie Nod for "Scott Stewart" for "Worst Director"!*
*I guess in these economic hard times, even Dennis Quaid I guess needs to pay the rent to be in a film like this...and I thought _G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra_ (2009) was low for him!.*

*Very cool!!*

*What is intriguing is the author, Sam Staggs even tries to interview Karin Dicker (Sarah Jane, age 8), but she fails to do the interview.*

*TCM's Robert Osborne, on the Oscars and his brilliant career*
By Tom Shales
Washington Post
Sunday, March 7, 2010
*Robert Osborne either has the best job in the world, or comes very close. As millions of viewers know, Osborne is the resident host of the great Turner Classic Movies (TCM) channel, the most reliable source of pure enchantment in the cable universe. He appears before and after each prime-time movie, an avatar (yes!) of erudition who introduces the films and provides a few closing thoughts before going on to the next one.*
So it goes, movie after movie, "Ben-Hur" after "Herbie Rides Again"; "Brute Force" after "Baby Face"; "Dead of Night" after "The Life of the Party"; "A Night to Remember" after "The Remains of the Day"; "Miss Pinkerton" after "Mr. Skeffington"; "Kagemusha" after "Yojimbo"; "The Man Who Came to Dinner" after "The Monster That Challenged the World."
It's not just a channel, it's a place to spend one's retirement. It's a history of pop culture. It's a respite from reality and from reality television. It's a place in the sun and a nightmare alley and dark at the top of the stairs and the stuff that dreams are made of. Robert Osborne would be a fool not to love his work, especially at this time of year, when he's wrapping up the channel's annual "31 Days of Oscar."
"I do love it," he says, "and the feedback we get from viewers is part of it, from young and old -- viewers who say they never knew this or that film existed, or talk about what they had missed until they discovered TCM. We show movies from all different eras, not just 'old movies,' but I've often quoted something that Lauren Bacall said years ago: 'If you've never seen 'Brief Encounter,' then it's not an old movie to you.' " But introducing the movies is only part of Osborne's work. On Saturday nights, he co-hosts TCM's "The Essentials," an anthology of "must-see classics," with actor and movie buff -- and this year's co-host of the Oscars -- Alec Baldwin. Osborne has a special relationship with the Academy Awards, having covered the ritual for the Hollywood Reporter, serving as Oscar's official greeter for the past four years (replacing the late Army Archerd) and authoring a massive, 430-page picture-and-text whopper "80 Years of the Oscar: The Official History of the Academy Awards," in addition to other Oscar-related books.
