  1. *BRIEF: 360 degrees of Kevin Bacon*

By Chattanooga Times Free Press, Tenn.

    Friday, February 05, 2010

*Jan. 28--Turner Classic Movies will go full circle with its 16th installment of the 31 Days of Oscar in February. The 2010 edition of the monthlong event will feature 360 Academy Award nominees and winners, with all of the films presented uncut and commercial-free.*

*The month's schedule is designed so that each movie is linked to the next movie in the lineup through a shared actor or actress.*

The festival begins at 6 a.m. Monday with Kevin Bacon and James Coco in "Only When I Laugh" (1981). Coco and Harry Andrews then will be featured in "The Man of La Mancha" (1972) at 8:15 a.m., followed by Andrews in "55 Days at Peking" (1963) at 10:30 a.m.

These movie-to-movie links continue through the month, one star at a time, ending with "Diner" (1982), starring Bacon, beginning at 4 a.m. March 3.

Hosting the festival is Robert Osborne, who also is the official biographer of the Academy Awards and the Academy's red-carpet greeter.

The Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements in 2009 will be presented Sunday, March 7, in Hollywood and broadcast live on ABC.

A complete schedule of 31 Days of Oscar is available at www.tcm.com.

  2. *1945 Movie Shot in Prescott Screening at Sedona International Film Festival*

    Friday, 05 February 2010

*The history of filmmaking in Yavapai County goes back several decades, to 1912, in fact, and it?s not often one of those classic older films shot here makes it to the big screen once more.*

*?Leave Her to Heaven,? from 1945, will be screening as part of the Sedona International Film Festival, (SIFF) for one time only, Friday February 26th at 4:35 pm. The film will be hosted by Turner Classic Movies host Robert Osborne, who will answer questions about the movie after the screening*.

The film stars Gene Tierney, Cornel Wilde, Jeanne Crain, Vincent Price and Mary Philips. ?Leave Her to Heaven? won an Oscar for Best Color Cinematography, (which, according to local Yavapai County Film Historian Tom Slaback, was unique in that it was a film noir, which are known for their dark black and white film.) Gene Tierney was nominated for Best Actress for the film.

According to Slaback the swimming pool scene was shot at the old Granite Dells Resort Pool. The ?New Mexico mansion? in the film was shot in Sedona, and the ash scattering scene was on Schnebly Hill. Although at first glance the lake looks a bit like a very well-fed Goldwater Lake, it is not. The lake scene was shot in California, at Bass Lake.

*Osborne will host two other classic films; ?The Adventures of Robin Hood,? from 1938 with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland, and ?A Place in the Sun? from 1951 with Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor and Shelley Winters. ?The Adventures of Robin Hood? will screen on Wednesday February 24th at 4:50 pm and ?A Place in the Sun? will screen Thursday February 25th at 4:35 pm.*

SIFF, which started as a one-time screening event of one film 16 years ago, has grown to a seven day festival this year, with 140 films screening throughout the week, and many of the filmmakers there for a Question and Answer period following the screenings. Volunteers from the Prescott Film Festival will be handing out flyers at the event, thanks to the generosity of SIFF Executive Director Patrick Schweiss. PFF has monthly screenings at the Yavapai College Performance Hall and will hold their first multi-day festival on August 6, 7 & 8th in Prescott.

*Tickets for SIFF can be purchased on-line, or by calling (928) 282-1177. Tickets may also be purchased at the box office before the screenings. (Films sell out fast, so it?s suggested that people buy tickets in advance.) Individual tickets are $10.00 each.*

*Brittany Murphy, Danny Pino, and Mike Vogel: Across the Hall*

    Dec 01 - 2009? Posted by Britten

Across the Hall was first introduced as a short starring Adrian Grenier in 2006. After gaining critical acclaim and winning over 15 awards at multiple festivals, Merkin was quickly approached to turn it into a full-length feature.

I'm not sure if Merkin ever imagined he would end up directing on the same Sound Stage at Universal where his personal influence Alfred Hitchcock, shot _Psycho_ in 1960.

  8. *Fri, Feb 12, 2010 @ 10:30 AM _Our Dancing Daughters_ (1928)* *All Times Eastern!*

_Our Dancing Daughters_. MGM silent film, 1928. Directed by Harry Beaumont, 86 minutes.

Joan Crawford plays "Dangerous Diana," a free-spirited, partying, pure-of-heart socialite in love with an heir (Johnny Mack Brown) who's pursued and caught by the wily Anita Page. Dorothy Sebastian plays the nice, "slightly soiled" friend.

This is the movie that made Joan a star, as well as the post-Clara Bow role model for flaming youth.

*On a side note, this film is also noted for being the first to feature the art deco style. From the book _Art Deco Chrome_ by Jim Linz (Schiffer, 1999):*

Co-starring with Crawford were stunning art moderne sets by Cedric Gibbons. Public reaction to Gibbons' sets was so favorable that other studios immediately began to put art deco sets into their films. The movie palace, itself, was also transformed into an art deco showplace where the public could experience the latest in art deco design. Movie magazines promoted the lavish art deco lifestyles of the Hollywood stars. Many stars attempted to recreate the lavish art deco movie sets in their homes.

  9. The Aero is also celebrating the 50th anniversary Wednesday of the classic film "Inherit the Wind," directed by Stanley Kramer. Spencer Tracy, Fredric March and Gene Kelly headline this historical drama based on the Scopes Monkey Trial of the 1920s. Tracy received a lead actor Oscar nomination. Rounding out the Kramer-Tracy double bill is 1967's "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," which marked Tracy's last Oscar nod and final screen role. His longtime companion and frequent costar, Katharine Hepburn, won a lead actress Oscar for that film. Sidney Poitier also stars. www .aerotheatre.com.
