All Five for the First Time on DVD September 8 2009
CULVER CITY, CALIF. (July 6, 2009) ? No matter the decade, there?s a place where icons, idols and the infamous flock for bottomless martinis and over-the-top trysts. Sit back and take in the scene when Sony Pictures Home Entertainment debuts a third round of Martini Movies on DVD September 8. The five newly-restored and remastered films incorporate the themes of the late 60?s and early 70?s, an era of free-love, anti-conformity and counter-culture politics. Never-before-available on DVD, the films include: Model Shop (1969), The Buttercup Chain (1970), The Pursuit of Happiness (1971), Summertree (1971), and Love and Pain and the Whole Damn Thing (1973). These rediscovered gems feature top-shelf talent, including two-time Academy Award?-winners Michael Douglas (One Flew Over the Cuckoo?s Nest, Wall Street) and Maggie Smith (The Prime of Miss Jean Brody, California Suite), Oscar? nominees Anouk Aimee (A Man and a Woman) and Barbara Hershey (A Portrait of a Lady), Emmy? Award-winners E.G. Marshall (TV?s ?The Defenders?) and Rue McClanahan (TV?s ?Golden Girls?), and many more. Along with each title comes its very own custom-mixed martini recipe, adding a fun twist to the viewing experience. Each title will be available separately for $19.94 SRP.
*Model Shop (1969)*
French New Wave director, Jacques Demy, best known for his stylish musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, reunites with French star Anouk Aimee (their first pairing, 1961?s Lola) to direct his first film in America. Gary Lockwood (2001, A Space Odyssey) plays shiftless but innocuous George Matthews, who can?t seem to get himself worked up about anything: the girl friend he is about to lose, his soon-to-be repossessed car, or even his draft notice. Until one day, he sees the beautiful but detached model (Aimee), and he begins to follow her. Los Angeles, from the beach at Malibu to the mansions of Beverly Hills to the cheap strip joints along Santa Monica Blvd., is critically examined as the tale unfolds, and its locations reflect the disaffection of its characters.
*The Buttercup Chain (1970)*
Cousins, Franz (Hywel Bennett) and Margaret (60?s superstar model Jane Asher), are very close, and after years of being separated at school, they reunite to vacation together. When Franz decides Margaret should have a lover, Fred (Sven-Bertil Taube) amicably joins them, and Franz takes up with one himself. But the foursome encounters sexual and cultural complications as they meander across Europe. The reticent Margaret is slow to take up with Franz?s candidate, and in the meantime, Franz?s lover Manny (Leigh Taylor Young) intervenes. This story of the entanglements of unencumbered, beautiful and cosmopolitan young people as they search out their identities and test each others limits is in some ways a traditional coming-of-age story, but at a time of changing attitudes and sexual mores. Director Robert Ellis Miller (The Heart is Lonely Hunter) was nominated for the Golden Palm at the Cannes International Film Festival for this film. In addition, The Buttercup Chain features sumptuous cinematography by three-time Oscar nominee Douglas Slocumbe (Travels with my Aunt, Julia, Raiders of the Lost Ark).
*The Pursuit of Happiness (1971)*
By the time Michael Sarazin landed the role of William Popper in The Pursuit of Happiness, he had displayed his Actor?s Studio credentials in a number of roles on stage and screen (They Shoot Horses, Don?t They?, The Sweet Ride, and The Flim Flam Man), and was a perfect choice to play the appealing, young lead in this anti-establishment story. Popper, who comes from privilege, has his eyes opened to social activism on the college campus by his girl friend, Barbara Hershey (Hannah and Her Sisters, Beaches). When a traffic accident forces Popper face-to-face with the judicial system, his principles and counter-culture lifestyle are put on trial. Directed by Oscar nominee Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird), and based on Thomas Rogers? book of the same title, the lesson Popper learns is that the severest consequences can come from trying to do the right thing.
*Summertree (1971)*
Although best-known as an actor, Michael Douglas?s strongest mark on Hollywood in his early career came as a producer of films such as One Flew Over the Cuckoo?s Nest and The China Syndrome. Summertree, which he starred in as well as produced (along with his father Kirk Douglas), examines the Vietnam War and its consequences on the soldiers drafted to fight and the families they leave behind. Jerry (Douglas) is an attractive, all-American male, who debates his options upon receiving his draft notice. Co-starring two-time Oscar nominee Jack Warden (Shampoo, Heaven Can Wait), Oscar nominee Barbara Bel Geddes (I Remember Mama, Vertigo, TV?s ?Dallas?), Brenda Vaccaro (Midnight Cowboy, Once is Not Enough) and a young Rob Reiner (TV?s ?All in the Family?), the film was directed by veteran actor-composer-director Anthony Newley (Oscar nominee for ?Best Music, Scoring Adaptation and Original Song Score? for Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory).
*Love and Pain and the Whole Damn Thing (1973)*
Directed by three-time Oscar nominee Alan J. Pakula (All the President?s Men, Klute), this funny and, at times, agonizing, road trip is a rich character study about the alienation and isolation felt by the younger generation in the post-revolutionary ?60?s era. Awkward and shy, Walter Ebbetson (Timothy Bottoms, Johnny Got His Gun, TV?s ?That?s My Bush?) is exiled by his rich father to a bicycle tour across Spain. Walter?miserable in his own skin?makes those around him even more uncomfortable as he suffers through the ordeal of the tour. He escapes the cyclists, only to become entangled in the life of a fellow tourist, the introverted Lila (Maggie Smith). Meanwhile Lila happens to be suffering from her own anxious tics and insecurities. The two find themselves locked in an uncoordinated and clumsy affair, two misfits who find companionship in unlikely partners.
Model Shop has a running time of approximately 90 minutes and is rated PG. The Buttercup Chain has a running time of approximately 95 minutes and is rated R. The Pursuit of Happiness has a running time of approximately 93 minutes and is not rated. Summertree has a running time of approximately 89 minutes and is not rated. Love and Pain and the Whole Damn Thing has a running time of approximately 110 minutes and is rated PG.

*Fitzgerald, F. Scott* Although he reportedly found movie work degrading, Fitzgerald was once again in dire financial straits, and spent the second half of the 1930s in Hollywood, working on commercial short stories, scripts for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (including some unfilmed work on Gone with the Wind), and his fifth and final novel, The Love of the Last Tycoon. Published posthumously as The Last Tycoon, it was based on the life of film executive Irving Thalberg.

*This was previously available on DVD without its original score, this release restores the film to how it was intended to be seen. I would have liked a commentary or retrospective documentary as the only extra is the theatrical trailer.*

*_DVD Releases_*
The initial DVD release from Columbia featured a new soundtrack for the film and a new completely different cover art (not original poster art), which fans did not appreciate. Which also caused many slasher fans to beg for a rerelease of the film with the original soundtrack that was heard in theaters and on the Columbia VHS.
Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced that they are releasing the film back to DVD with the original poster art as the DVD cover and using the film's original soundtrack, the DVD will be released on DVD October 13, 2009

*Castle a true B-movie legend*
London Free Press - Bruce Kirkland - Oct 22, 2009
*You might not remember his name nor know his game.*
*But William Castle is a B-movie legend, the P.T. Barnum of Hollywood.*
Like a circus barker, he invigorated horror and thriller movies in the 1950s and 1960s with gonzo gimmicks. For the Vincent Price mad-science movie The Tingler, Castle wired giant joy buzzers under theatre seats to give patrons the illusion of an electrical shock.
Producer-director Castle (1914-1977) is honoured this week with a five-disc box set, The William Castle Film Collection.
It contains all eight of his Columbia Pictures titles from The Tingler (1959) through 13 Ghosts (1960), Homicidal (1961), Mr. Sardonicus (1961), Zotz! (1962), 13 Frightened Girls (1963), The Old Dark House (1963) and Strait-Jacket (1964). You have to go elsewhere for his non-Columbia titles, including the much-loved House on Haunted Hill.
Three titles here are new to DVD. All eight are beautifully remastered. There are good extras. A fascinating doc with The Tingler offers an overview of Castle and delves into his eccentric stunts. What is missing -- because people focus on his outlandish showmanship -- is that Castle was a good filmmaker.
I don't mean like a Welles, Ford or Hitchcock. But, in his own realm of slapstick horror and comedy thrillers, Castle was king. His films are adept, off-kilter, clever.
His take on sex-and-violence, for example, is transgressive for the time. Price's wife in The Tingler mocks him while openly cheating on him. In the underrated comedy Zotz!, a terrific Tom Poston gets all goofy when he discovers a naked **** outside his window after conjuring a storm with an invocation.
Castle never just shot the obvious.
There were wild and crazy guys in showbiz long before Steve Martin -- and one of them was William Castle.

*_The Blair Witch Project_ (1999) stunk...One (1) of the "Worst films of 1999"! ...the marketing campaign was great ....stood in line for 5 hours and when I saw "The Blair Witch Project" ...wow what a waste of time and money!!*
*_Paranormal Activity_ (2007) looks just like the same thing! I will wait for $1.00 Redbox rental ...I;m sorry but _Halloween_ from 1978 still scares me!!!*

*I loved "Drag Me To Hell" ..saw it 2xs in theater and now own it on DVD! Very original!*
*The "Unrated" edition of "Drag Me To Hell" on DVD was a waste of money!*
*If you were like me and saw it in theaters and still complained about the PG-13 rating .,..Well, there is no difference between two (2) cuts! But still worth to have on DVD if a horror fan ...and Esp. a Sam Raimi fan too!*
*Raimi wrote Drag Me to Hell before he had worked on the Spider-Man films and was his first horror film since directing the Evil Dead films.*
The original story for Drag Me to Hell was written ten years before the film went into production and was written by Sam Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi. The film went into production under the name The Curse. Sam and Ted Raimi wrote the script as a morality tale, desiring to write a story about a character who wants to be a good person, but makes a sinful choice out of greed for their own betterment and pays the price for it. Sam and Ivan tried to make the character of Christine the main focal point in the film, and tried to have Christine in almost all the scenes in the film
Elements of the film's story are drawn from the British horror film _Night of the Demon_ (1957) such as the similar shaped demons and the three day curse theme in the film.
Unlike with his past horror films, Ivan and Sam Raimi wanted the film to be a PG-13 rated horror film not wanting Drag Me to Hell to be strictly driven by gore stating "I didn't want to do exactly the same thing I had done before".

Albert Finney - Rather than attend the Oscar ceremony in 1964, he went on vacation sailing in the South Seas. When informed that he had been beaten as Best Actor by Sidney Poitier, he offered Poitier his heartfelt congratulations. Though nominated another four times in the 1970s, '80s and 21st Century, he has yet to appear in person at an Oscar ceremony.

*Inglourious Basterds Kills Some Nazis on DVD and Blu-ray on December 15th 2009!!*
You can take home all the Nazi-scalping fun when Quentin Tarantino's new film hits DVD and BD, just in time for the holidays. Inglourious Basterds will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on December 15. The film will be released in a single-disc edition ($29.98 SRP) a two-disc Special Edition DVD ($34.98 SRP) and a two-disc Blu-ray edition ($39.98 SRP). We don't have any cover art images for any of the releases as of yet, but we'll be sure to update this story as soon as we have the new images. The film stars Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Eli Roth, Melanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender, Mike Meyers, Daniel Bruhl, Til Schweiger, Gideon Burkhard, Jacky Ido, B.J. Novack, Omar Doom, August Diehl and Rod Taylor.
In the first year of the German occupation of France, Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.
Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish American soldiers to perform swift, shocking acts of retribution. Later known to their enemy as "the Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquis, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own. ...
Employing pulp and propaganda in equal measure, Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds weaves together the infamous, oppressed, real and larger-than-life stories of WWII.

*_Dragonwyck_ (1946) - Fri, Oct 23, 2009 @ 10:00 PM (Eastern) Check Local Times!*

*_Production notes_*
Gregory Peck was the first choice for Nicholas Van Ryn. Ernst Lubitsch was to direct, but became ill, pre-production was delayed, and Peck dropped out.
*_Trivia_:*
Last film in the long career of Vivienne Osborne.
In the first cut, Miranda meets Dr. Turner on the riverboat going to Dragonwyck. Although it was cut by order of producer Zanuck, actor Glenn Langan can still be seen from behind walking toward Miranda. A brief opening scene showing Miranda reading a novel in a graveyard was also cut.
"Dragonwyck" was recreated twice for radio: the Lux Radio Theater on 10/7/46 with Price and Tierney recreating their roles with Gale Gordon as Ephraim Wells and on 1/20/47 foe Screen Guild with Price and Langan in their original roles and 'Theresa Wright (I)' as Miranda.
The family name Schermerhorn, which is the subject of gossip at the ball at Dragonwyck is actually the name of writer Mankiewicz's ex-in-laws.
