*Half lie about seeing classic films*
*Almost half of British consumers have lied to their friends about seeing a classic film to avoid the embarrassment of admitting ignorance of great movies.*

The Godfather, Dirty Dancing and Gone with the Wind are all titles people claim to have watched, but have never got around to viewing, according to a survey.
Some can even impress their friends by quoting lines from the film, despite seeing no more than the briefest of clips.
The research, undertaken by Orange for its Orange Wednesday cinema promotion, found the multi-Oscar winning trilogy The Godfather, about a mafia family, were the films people were most likely to have lied about watching.
One in five people dishonestly claimed to have seen Francis Ford Coppola?s films, considered by many critics as masterpieces of modern cinema. One in ten people also claim to be fans of box-office hit Dirty Dancing, staring the late Patrick Swayze, despite having never seen the film.
The research also revealed that while 58 per cent of men lie about a which classics they have watched to impress their friends, only 38 per cent of women have.
Helen O? Hara from Empire Magazine said: "People want to claim to have seen the weighty and intelligent films that they actually haven?t. The Godfather tends to top most critics? lists, so it is the film people most feel they should have seen. It is a generalisation, but men are more likely to see having opinions on films as a status symbol, whereas women don?t have such a tick-list approach."
The survey also suggests films staring Robert DeNiro appear to be some of the most bluffed about. Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, as well as The Godfather, all make the top ten most lied about films.
It is not just films that people bluff about. Two thirds of British people also lie about their literary knowledge. George Orwell?s 1984 is the book most Britons dishonestly claim to have read, followed by War and Peace and James Joyce?s Ulysses, according to the organisers of the World Book Day.
A spokesman for Orange put the finding down to "a combination of factors".
"Most people tell the odd white lie so they seem more intelligent or knowledgeable to their friends," the spokesman said. "Others lie because they are embarrassed about appearing less cultured."

*_Film Prologue_*
Much in the manner of Universal's groundbreaking Frankenstein (1931), William Castle opened the film with an on screen warning to the audience:
"I am William Castle, the director of the motion picture you are about to see. I feel obligated to warn you that some of the sensations? some of the physical reactions which the actors on the screen will feel? will also be experienced, for the first time in motion picture history, by certain members of this audience. I say 'certain members' because some people are more sensitive to these mysterious electronic impulses than others. These unfortunate, sensitive people will at times feel a strange, tingling sensation; other people will feel it less strongly. But don't be alarmed? you can protect yourself. At any time you are conscious of a tingling sensation, you may obtain immediate relief by screaming. Don't be embarrassed about opening your mouth and letting rip with all you've got, because the person in the seat right next to you will probably be screaming too. And remember? a scream at the right time may save your life."

*King Kong Figurine Used In 1930s Movie Up For Sale*
*Skeletal Figure Used In Film's Climactic Scene*
RAPHAEL G. SATTER, Associated Press Writer
October 9, 2009
LONDON -- A tiny King Kong figurine that helped launch the career of one of cinema's biggest monsters is going up for sale, Christie's auction house said Friday.
The London auctioneer said the 22-inch (56-centimeter) skeleton was the one used in the climactic scene of the 1933 movie in which the humongous ape climbs New York's Empire State Building, clutching a blonde starlet and swatting away fighter planes.
"King Kong" wowed 1930s audiences with groundbreaking special effects that appeared to show the titular beast brawling with dinosaurs and cutting a swathe of destruction through New York City.
Much of the credit goes to Willis O'Brien, then chief technician at RKO studios, who created the monster by adding layers of cotton, rubber, liquid latex and rabbit's fur to a metal armature.
The figurines were then filmed one frame at a time, moving them ever-so-slightly between shots to give the illusion of movement.
Although several such models were used in the film, Christie's spokeswoman Jo Swetenham said this one was thought to be the largest. She added that the monster's fleshy covering has since rotted away.
The movie spawned a series of sequels and remakes, including a 1976 version starring Jeff Bridges and Peter Jackson's computer-wizardry packed "King Kong" with Jack Black, Naomi Watts and Adrien Brody.
The skeletal miniature may lack Kong's heft, but it still comes with a kingly price tag.
Christie's said it hopes to get up to 150,000 pounds (about $240,000) from the figure's sale. Fans can bid for the artifact at the auctioneer's popular culture sale on Nov. 24.

*TCM confirms Alec Baldwin for second 'Essentials' season*
Atlanta Journal Constitution
Richard Eldredge
October 8, 2009
*Atlanta?s Turner Classic Movies announced Thursday that actor and ?30 Rock? Emmy winner Alec Baldwin is returning to host a second season of ?The Essentials? the film channel?s popular Saturday night film series with host Robert Osborne.*
Even better, when new episodes of the series return in 2010, two additional late night editions of ?The Essentials? will also air with the R-rated 1970s classics ?Serpico? and ?Saturday Night Fever,? both favorites of Baldwin?s.
Sworn to secrecy until now, Buzz was on the Atlanta set this month when the actor and the Oscars historian reunited on Osborne?s bachelor pad TV set to film the new segments.
With self-deprecating humor, Baldwin attempted to keep up with Osborne on his vast movie knowledge. Introducing director Vincente Minnelli?s 1944 classic ?Meet Me in Saint Louis? starring future wife Judy Garland, Osborne explained: ?Technically, it was made in 1944. But it didn?t achieve a wide release until early 1945.?
Cracked Baldwin to the crew off camera: ?Do you notice there?s always a tinge of ?You fool!? in his voice??
Zinged Osborne back: ?I have to work on my tinge.?
Replied Baldwin dryly: ?Please, let?s get this right. I don?t need Liza [Minnelli] belting me with her pocketbook at [New York City restaurant[ Orso!"
It's clear that the men love working together. It's that chemistry between the tenured film professor and Baldwin's unvarnished view from the set as an actor that resulted in arguably the finest season of "The Essentials" this year.
"It's a labor of love for me," Baldwin told us between tapings. "I absolutely love this network and its mission. I joked that the only reason they invited me back was so Bob could relax since I talk so much!"
Explaining why he chose the 1970s classics "Serpico" and "Saturday Night Fever" for the new season, Baldwin told us: "When you look at the style of film acting in those pictures, there is a through-line that goes back to Spencer Tracy and [James] Cagney. It effectively ends with [John] Travolta in 1977. And ["Serpico" actor Al] Pacino? He?s one of the main reasons I?m in this business.?
Back on the set, Osborne continued to fact-check Baldwin. While praising Hollywood producer and songwriter Arthur Freed?s long career, Baldwin slipped and said that Freed also produced the 1971 counter-culture classic ?A Clockwork Orange.?
Arching an eyebrow with his voice Osborne asked ?Did he??
Turns out, Freed?s standard, ?Singin? in the Rain? was used in the flick.
Said Baldwin to Buzz laughing: ?You?re never going to be able to top Robert Osborne. The best you can ever hope for is to hold your own. I learned to release that fantasy early on!?

*_Sky West and Crooked_ (1966)*
Intended to help Hayley distance herself from the kind of children's roles that she had undertaken at Disney, the film is a variation on DH Lawrence's _The Virgin and the Gypsy_, with Hayley's child-like teen falling for romantic Romany Ian McShane.
Sky West and Crooked is a 1966 film, starring Hayley Mills, directed by her father John Mills, and co-written by her mother Mary Hayley Bell. It was released in the US as _Gypsy Girl_.
Hayley Mills plays Brydie White, a young woman in a village in the West Country in England. She has learning difficulties because of a shooting accident when she was younger. She becomes involved with a young gypsy man, played by Ian McShane, in one of his earliest film roles.
*What a very strange ...interesting little film!*
Hayley Mills gave 1 damn good little performance... she had me in tears at the end!
*_Two complaints for TMC_:*
1) Why was the film on so late!??!
2) Why wasn't the film presented in "Letterbox"!??!
*Also...Per "Movie database":*
The version sold to cable television by the Samuel Goldwyn Company omits the opening theme song sung by Hayley Mills, replacing it with the background score, this despite a song credit in the opening scroll.
*NOW WHY WAS THIS DONE!??!*

*TCM is planning a Grace Kelly tribute*
Published: Oct. 7, 2009
United Press International
*LOS ANGELES, Oct. 7 (UPI) -- Turner Classic Movies says it plans to pay tribute to the Hollywood screen icon Grace Kelly in honor of what would have been her 80th birthday.*
"Model, stage actress, film star and princess: Grace Kelly is fondly remembered as one of the most beautiful and dignified performers ever to grace the silver screen," the television network said in a release. "This November, in honor of what would have been the actress' 80th birthday, Turner Classic Movies will celebrate her life and work by presenting all of her feature films, as well as a television special. TCM host and film historian Robert Osborne will guide viewers through her fascinating career and outstanding performances each Thursday night in November."
Among the films set to screen are "The Country Girl," "Dial M for Murder," "High Noon," "Rear Window," "To Catch a Thief," "High Society" and "The Swan."
Born Nov. 12, 1929, Kelly retired from filmmaking in 1956 to take on her new role as Princess Grace of Monaco, although she did serve on the board of directors for 20th Century Fox from 1976 to 1981. Kelly died after suffering a stroke and driving her car off the road in 1982.
His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco, the son of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace, has voiced an on-air tribute piece dedicated to Grace Kelly's film career. It is to run throughout the month, TCM said.

*Tate's sister: Polanski won't get fair US trial*
The Associated Press - Sep 30, 2009
NEW YORK ? Debra Tate, the sister of Roman Polanski's second wife, actress Sharon Tate, says Polanski is brilliant and a "good guy" and she doesn't think her former brother-in-law can get a fair trial in the United States.
Tate told NBC's "Today" show Wednesday that the U.S. justice system is broken.
Polanski was arrested Saturday in Zurich. The U.S. has been seeking the extradition of Polanski, who fled to France decades ago to avoid sentencing for having unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.
Tate says Polanski did not forcibly have sex with the girl, calling it a "consensual matter." The girl, however, testified at the time that Polanski forced himself on her. She subsequently has said she forgives him and wants the ordeal to be over.
Sharon Tate was murdered in Los Angeles in 1969 by followers of Charles Manson. She was eight months pregnant.
Debra Tate says it's been a devastating few weeks for her, with her sister's killer, Susan Atkins, dying Sept. 24 and now her late sister's husband jailed.

*Warner Bros. Planning Remake of Lesbian Classic 'The Hunger'*
by LA Vess
09/28/2009
SheWired
*Blockbuster film studio Warner Bros. is reportedly working on a remake of the classic vampire film The Hunger. The original film, based on the book by Whitley Strieber, featured Catherine Deneuve as a bisexual vampire and is widely regarded as a lesbian cult classic.*
Released in 1983, the Tony Scott-helmed original film adaption of Strieber's book featured a young Susan Sarandon as Deneuve's lover and eventual victim Sarah. David Bowie also starred in the film. Deneuve, as the lead character Miriam, seduces young men and women and turns them into vampire companions with the promise of immortality.
In a twist on the classic vampire tale, however, only Miriam stays young forever. Her 'companions', on the other hand, are doomed to grow old but never die, trapped forever in failed, ancient bodies and locked in caskets in Miriam's basement.
The film received little critical acclaim and was certainly not a hit in the conventional sense. However, the film's dark interpretation of the traditional vampire tale and lesbian overtones rapidly garnered the movie a reputation as a cult classic.
There is little information about the new remake of Strieber's bestselling book The Hunger out there at present, other than the news Warner Bros. will be at the helm. The biggest question is, who will they cast for the new Miriam and Sarah? Picking the right actresses for the roles could make the vital difference between a cheesy, failed remake and a new cult classic in the making.

*Billy & Bernard Author Keith Waterhouse Dies at 80*
WhatsOnStage.com
Sep 7, 2009
Keith Waterhouse, who died on Friday (4 September 2009) aged 80, was a genuine all-round man of letters, equally at home at a party political conference, or a literary festival, or in the West End, where many of his plays were co-authored with his fellow Yorkshireman, Willis Hall, who died four years ago.
Their most famous collaboration was Billy Liar, adapted from Waterhouse?s novel, one of the major comic fictions of the last century in its portrayal of an undertaker?s assistant who engages in a Walter Mitty-style fantasy life: the 1960 play starred Albert Finney, succeeded by Tom Courtenay, who also appeared in the film directed by John Schlesinger. Michael Crawford starred in the 1974 Drury Lane musical Billy, with (then) unknowns Elaine Paige and Diana Quick as two of his girlfriends.
The lyrics and music for Billy were by Don Black and John Barry, and it?s one of the best modern British musicals, Billy?s dream translated into a show-stopping ?Some of Us Belong to the Stars? as the hero descended a light-up staircase. The other great Waterhouse theatre project was his brilliant cabaret play Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell (1989) in which Peter O'Toole, directed by the late Ned Sherrin (See News, 2 Oct 2007), gave a towering comic performance as the journalist and drunken denizen of the Coach and Horses (and was followed, in several revivals by Tom Conti).
Waterhouse was a famously industrious writer who produced two acidly satirical and no-nonsense newspaper columns a week (in the Daily Mirror and latterly, until just four months ago, the Daily Mail), many novels, and several film scripts with Hall ? including Bryan Forbes? Whistle Down the Wind (1961) starring Alan Bates and Hayley Mills.
He never worked on a computer, bashing out his copy on an old typewriter before adjourning for lunch, usually in Soho, or in Earl?s Court where he lived in later years, washed down with copious amounts of his favourite tipple, champagne. He was the most wonderful company, apple-cheeked and white-haired, with a permanent mischievous twinkle in his eye.
Born on 6 February 1929 in Leeds, he left school aged 14, did two years National Service with the RAF and joined the Yorkshire Post, where his vivid writing led to the stage work with Hall.
First, they wrote a series of Northern family dramas, followed by a sophisticated adultery farce Say Who You Are (1965); a musical of Arnold Bennett?s The Card (1973) starring Jim Dale, with a score by Jackie Trent and Tony Hatch; Saturday, Sunday, Monday (1974) a marvelous re-working of an Eduardo de Filippo farce for the National Theatre starring Joan Plowright and Laurence Olivier; and a beautiful version of the Grossmiths? Diary of a Nobody called Mr and Mrs Nobody(1986) starring Judi Dench and her late husband Michael Williams.
Comparisons have rightly been drawn with JB Priestley, Waterhouse?s great literary hero, and another Yorkshireman who straddled the whole of literary and theatrical life in a populist vein, though Waterhouse was more raffish and less of a public figure. He was twice married and twice divorced, made a CBE in 1991 and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

*Very Very Sad!!!*
*'The Ghost' is in limbo after Roman Polanski's arrest*
September 29, 2009
Los Angeles Times
*'The Ghost' is on hold*
Roman Polanski's arrest in Switzerland has left his latest film in limbo, with several months of work before the political thriller is ready for theaters.
Polanski's agent, International Creative Management chief Jeff Berg, said Polanski had completed much of the editing on "The Ghost." But other postproduction work, including music scoring and sound mixing, had yet to be done, Berg said.
Based on the novel by Robert Harris, "The Ghost" stars Pierce Brosnan as fictional former British leader Adam Lang and Ewan McGregor as a ghostwriter hired to help complete his memoirs. The cast includes Kim Cattrall, Tom Wilkinson, Olivia Williams and James Belushi.
Though the film does not yet have a U.S. deal, it has distribution in many overseas territories, among them Germany, where it was shot early this year, and France, where Polanski lives.
