  1. What Texas needs is a few good Aardvarks. Then we could start calling Texans "Aardvark ropers"
  2. In response to your description of the manner by which the sheriff obtained the ice... In the Marine Corps it is referred to as "Cumshawing", and was refined into a fine art by marine grunts and navy "seabees". Any army or air force units nearby were picked clean in a matter of minutes. How else could a poor illiterate marine squad leader get his troops jungle boots or jungle suits when the REMFs had them all ?????
  3. Yeah FredC: BUT that was before we found out that we *had to have* an overpaid, appointed bureaucrat residing inside the beltway to tell us how to scratch our noses when it itched.... (To say nothing of how to best waste taxpayer $$$$....)
  4. I have a better idea... Notify the "Department of Homeland Security" and follow the reaction with a camera... We would end up with a modern version of the Keystone Cops. Swat teams running around in armored vehicles, blazing away with automatic weapons while dealing with these "dangerous illegal immigrants".....
  5. FredC, you rate all kinds of points with me finding the old short that shows the young lady getting out of the 1940 Packard station sedan (as Packard called their woodies). FYI.. A friend wants me to go in to Abq tomorrow with him and keep him out of trouble... If you are around Ron Peterson's around 11;30 / 12 noon, I'll buy the (non-alcoholic) liquid refreshment.... P.S...I wonder what the locals thought of the Hollywood indian in that short ????
  6. Good stuff FredC... By the way , your darn donkey keeps showing up and annoying everyone with it's silly braying.....
  7. Hi mickeeteeze... I'm pretty certain that the majority of the posters on this thread are aware of the impacts I was referring to. But somtimes it needs to be said out loud so that we don't lose sight of it durning our discussions. No other reason for stating the oblivious .... I was brought up to feel that if you wanted something done, you had to do it yourself.... Environment ??? Clean up your own act before you **** about someone else's need to change things. etc.... Spending policies ????? ditto... My personal favorite was my grandfather's answer when I ask him about his being the only registered member of the Republican Party in the county, when I knew that he supported Truman in '48... His reply was that he didn't want the Democrats running the county to think that "there wasn't some one keeping an eye on them"....
  8. mickeeteeze... The rising price of oil has the greatest impact on everyone in places other than the gas station. Having lived way too many years in the northeast, I am aware of the dependence on oil products there. At the grocery store..How much have food prices risen in the last 3 to 6 months ? And how much is heating oil a gallon to heat the house ???? And the cost of electricity to run the AC to cool the house / office ??? The impact on the elders who are on fixed incomes, is that it is getting more and more difficult to live with the rising property taxes, cost of food and heat / utilities. Even the water and sewer bills have "fuel surcharges" tacked on...( You may own your house, but that doesn't mean that you can afford to live in it. ) These rising cost are also reflected in the lower income working classes difficulty in making ends meet. Pay the rent (?) or feed the kids (?) , or heat the house (?), or put gas in the tank so I can go to work ? If the choice is that you can only do one, which one is it ????
  9. Oh Boy... I am very well aware that a true Democracy is an impossible ideal. There will always be those who feel that they know best and should be the "leaders"and privileged by rights..... It is my contention that the goverment is run / controlled by bureaucrats and NOT by the elected officials. My definition of "energy independence" is to minimize our social and cultural dependence on fossil fuels. To expand the supply is a "short term" solution, and only puts off the problem for my kids to deal with in another 30 years or so....... bOb39..... You made a couple of comments that I disagree with.. #1 You noted that you considered "National Security" to be to be an overriding consideration. Those who live in a police state are "protected" from outside factors. There is a fine line between liberty and enslavement. #2 Questioning the government is to give comfort to out enemies.. It is our DUTY to question. Otherwise we may as well be mindless sheep doing what we are told by those following their own aggenda .(Which may NOT be to the common benifit.) #2 You noted you felt that it was OK to use whatever means were necessary to obtain information from our nation's enemies.. Who designates whom the "enemies" are ??? There are those posing who noted that "criminal gun lobbyist" should be violently exterminated" . Once those "criminal" wrong thinkers are dealt with, what person or group will be their next target ???? You ???? Me ????? FredCDobbs ????? I have a good friend who spent time as a "guest" of the VC... I recomend that you might get his feelings re "Agressive Interrogation". Personally, being captured was my worst nightmare. Being killed was preferable.
  10. I know that it isn't an "old classic", but there is a scene in "Good Will Hunting" where Matt Damon sums up the whole issue very neatly when he is being intervied for a job with a government agency ...... AND, my previous comments that we are in a "Bureaucracy" , NOT a "Democracy." (And we all are aware what the primary function of a bureaucrat is..... Their personal career. All three branches are infected, and at every level. Federal, State and Local.. I once tried to register as a member of the "Anarchist Party", but it went right over the town clerk's head in the little town in Massachusetts where I was living at the time...... ) Sorry, but I'm afraid that I'm more than a bit cynical regarding much of my fellow man. "We need to help the environment." (But only if it isn't costing ME .) "We need to have a more equitable distribution of wealth in this country." (As long as I get as much as possible for myself FIRST..) etc. etc.
  11. If you can document back to the land allotment roles of the 1890's, you "should" be able to enroll today. But, I'm not 100% on that. Worth checking on though. re: Chaco... I plan on spending some time there when I head out to Monument Valley, Vermilion Cliffs and Zion in a couple of weeks. I'll return via the north rim of Grand Canyon and the "rez". I have to keep away from Zuni though, my wife is "addicted" to the jewelry. (The daughter-in-laws are brawling over the booty already......)
  12. Yep...But think of the math and engineering skills that it requires to line up wall so exactly, miles apart and with no view of a common point of reference..... "Astronomy is based on math".. Or so a prof. I once had stated....
  13. scsu1975: Shawnee 3rd generation... Since your interest are in that direction you should investigate Charo Canyon and the way the walls of the ruins are aligned with the lunar equinoxes. Very interesting.
  14. Hay FredC... Your burro just showed up.........
  15. To scsu1975: so you won't feel left out, Would you like to see my BIA / tribal membership card ??????? Poor FredCDobbs. If you think that Bogie was "nervious" can you imagine how FredC feels now knowing that I'm loose in the neighorhood. mickeeteeze: 2/4 and 3/9 '64-'66 in "Eye Corps"....
  16. Boy what a gaggle of gooses......This country is a *Bureaucracy* NOT a *Democracy* FredC... If you are looking for your burro, I think that I saw it with a herd of range cattle near Abo pass. AND ya forgot the twenty years between 1680 and 1700 when the locals chased the "new guys" south out of the territory.... Mickeeteeze...Since my mos was 0311, would you like a saucer of milk ?????
  17. Thank You Fred for sharing your insights on the photographic processes . The technical aspects of movie making using lighting and angles has become an interest for me recently. I find it amazing how proper use of light and shadow can add "drama" or "mood" to a scene, especally in a black and white movie. And I agree about the ending of "The Professionals", but then who ever said that the movies were suposed to reflect real life ????
  18. Harry T. would be a pretty good choice too.
  19. Yeah, I have times too when the "Are they showing THAT AGAIN ??" thought goes through my mind. And FredCDobbs, is correct. (He did forget the endless replays of some whogivesahoot sporting event from 1977.) Personally, I spend my spare change on DVDs of older movies that I (or the boss) want to watch again. The Thin Man series, High Sierra, Jane Austin (the bbc series) etc.... You might give that a thought. It works for me....
  20. I rented both this and "No Country for Old Men". Truthfully, I didn't care for either one. ( It should be noted that I was raised in a southwest boomtown environment and saw enough violence between that and my time in the military (1961 -1967). My later years as a mid level manager on the technical side exposed me to the greed and cruelty of big business' executive suites. So my taste in entrainment / movies runs to the lighter side. Funny part is that I do have copies of, and consider "classic" *"The Green Mile"* and *"Saving Private Ryan"....* Go Figure.) Message was edited by: OldPackard
  21. VERY NICE and Thank You. Your efforts are appreciated.
  22. Thank You Madeleine for the kind words. It sounds as if you had fun in southern California. My memories of Hollywood in the early 1960s involved visiting the "Whiskey-a-go-go" with a couple of other guys from my outfit. (That place had the biggest bouncer I ever saw in my life. Nice guy, but BIG...) Otherwise I hung out with relatives in Pasadena, ate at "Bob's Big Boy " on Colorado Bvd.and enjoyed the view(s). One thing we can say about old cars, old movies and old music. The "fun factor" is unbeatable,,,
  23. Hi Cynthia.. It looks like Dan was on the ball and found the movie you were thinking about. Thank You Dan... Nice people on this web site, and with a great deal of knowlege that they are happy to share with the rest of us.
  24. I did see "Eyes in the Night" on TCM recently. I'm getting more and more "in to" old movies since my retirement (I don't play golf and restoring a 70+ year old car can get unbelievably expensive.) I am finding that many of the lesser known actors such as Edward Arnold and Una Merkle are becomming old friends. If I see them in the cast I know that I can expect to spend some enjoyable time in front of the 'tube. With the likes of them in the lead, many a "B" movie was superior to the "A" film with big name "stars" at the top of the billing.
  25. Snorky, I don't know where you find the pictures and posters that you come up with for this thread. but I for one Thank You for sharing them with the rest of us. Thanks Again
