VINTAGE EXPOITATION FILMS-DISCUSSION

Hi gagman! I'm glad you like the pictures! *Whoopee (1930)* is such a pleasurable, escapist experience, greatly facilitated by the cotton candy colors! Even allowing for the state of two strip technicolor back then, I feel the producer was deliberate in going for this surreal effect. Too bad it's not better known or more often seen. That's one reason I'm glad I included it in my *Busby Berkeley celebration.* It's a film that I can watch over and over again, because the colors make it so dream like! I hope the readers will take a look at it! I added some more Berkeley features to the *filmography* thread: *THE KID FROM SPAIN (1932)* *BIRD OF PARADISE (1932)* *NIGHT WORLD (1932)* ** I'm going chronologically, and this brings us to the threshold of his better known works made at the Warner Brothers. I look forward to posting more! -

Hi musicalnovelty! I didn't know *Palmy Days (1931)* was re-released in the 40's! I did see the George Raft image in the poster; he was quite a character on screen and off; reputedly a friend of mobsters. (Later in life he had a great ceremonial role as "greeter" in the mob owned casinos.) I love the sharing of information. To say I know far more about this subject than the day I began this project woud be quite an understatement! We talked about choreography, *MGM and the Stooges*. Here's a film short I hope you and everyone else will click on! The two musical numbers were taken from earlier films. "The Story of the Lady in a Fan" was originally filmed for the uncompleted *March of Time (1930),*and "The Woman in the Shoe" I regret not being able to find stills of the chorus girl scenes. Adding them made for a highly unusual Three Stooges film! *NERTSERY RHYMES (1933)* *MGM w/ Ted Healy and "Howard, Fine and Howard"!* ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTjkKhEqjy8 *Full Technicolor short in 2 parts* -
*THE KID FROM SPAIN (1932)* *Samuel Goldwyn Company w/ Eddie Cantor, Robert Young* ** ** ***Opening Busby Berkeley sequence* ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CC5MxkNxEtM *5 minute clip* *Eddie Cantor with Busby Berkeley dance number* ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qU5dvsvOtGg *5 minute clip* *Eddie Cantor- In The Moonlight* ** *5 minute clip* *Eddie and his Mexican friend Ricardo are expelled from college after Ricardo put Eddie in the girl's dormitory when he was drunk...* **

Looks like a hand out lobby card. This probably opened up to reveal more film graphics. These are quite collectible today! These were some steamy scenes for the time! *BIRD OF PARADISE (1932)* *RKO Pictures Dir. by King Vidor w/ Dolores Del Rio, Joel McCrea, Lon Chaney Jr.* ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vlRf_CERh8 *Full movie* *Dolores Del Rio dance sequence* ** *4 minute clip* *According to imdb,* *Busby Berkeley* *was an uncredited choreographer.* *One of the earliest all talking films to have a full orchestral score, directed by* *Max Steiner,* *Bird of Paradise created a scandal when released due to a scene featuring* *Dolores del Río* *swimming naked. This film was made before the Production Code was strictly enforced, so nudity in American movies was still fairly common.* *Orson Welles* *said del Río represented the highest erotic ideal with her performance in the film.* *A young man falls overboard and is saved by a beautiful Polynesian girl. They fall in love, but their idyll is smashed when the local volcano begins to erupt. The man discovers that the local custom is to sacrifice a young woman to the volcanic gods. They try to escape but realize that "east is east and west is west, and never the twain shall meet."*

Albertina Rasch You couldn't just be a gum chewing wannabe chorus girl to join her troupe; a background in ballet was required. From Daughter Of Blue Heaven number in Lord Byron Of Broadway Sheet music from Lord Byron Of Broadway *DAUGHTER OF BLUE HEAVEN from LORD BYRON OF BROADWAY (1930)* *5 minute Technicolor clip* *WOMAN IN THE SHOE from LORD BYRON OF BROADWAY* *4 minute Technicolor clip* -
*NIGHT WORLD (1932)* *Universal Pictures w/ Mae Clark, Lew ayres, Boris Karloff* *BROADWAY MONTAGE* *2 minute clip* *MAE CLARK & BUSBY BERKELEY* http://fan.tcm.com/_Mae-Clarke-38-Busby-Berkeley-/video/1610115/66470.html?b= *6 minute chorus girl clip* *Our* *New Year's Busby Berkeley tribute* *continues! In this film, so far as I can tell, Busby Berkeley makes his first cautious attempt at his famous "leg tunnel", which he would later fully "go into" at the Warner Brothers! Any restraint here might have been dictated either by the studio brass or by concern over local censors, who could order such scenes deleted.* *"Happy" MacDonald and his unfaithful wife own a Prohibition era night club. On this eventful night, he is threatened by bootleggers, and the club's star dancer falls in love with a young socialite who drinks to forget a personal tragedy, among other incidents.*

Hi musicalnovelty! I was up almost all night, there were some real night owls on these message boards! *Albertina Rasch* and her girls were active in films in that crucial 1929-1940 period. Her background was in ballet and stage choreography- talents which she brought to the old musical films with her troupe of women dancers. A lot of her early work was in the *two strip Technicolor* process. *The Devil's Cabaret (1930)* in Technicolor, I have posted to the *filmography* thread on *Dec 25, 2011 1:44 PM* http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?threadID=161844&tstart=0 I'm a two strip Technicolor addict, and I'll post some more of her early color and dance clips on this thread! It's nice intereacting with knowledgable film buffs! ***************************************************************************************************************** *Here is her filmography from imdb:* *1940 Broadway Melody of 1940 (additional choreographer)* ** *1938 Sweethearts (dances and ensembles)* *1938 The Great Waltz (dance director, ensembles director)* *1938 Marie Antoinette (dance director)* *1938 The Girl of the Golden West (dances and ensembles designer)* *1937 Rosalie (choreographer - uncredited)* *1937 The Firefly (dance director)* *1936 The King Steps Out (ballet)* *1935 Broadway Melody of 1936 (stager: "Lucky Star" ballet)* *1935 After the Dance (choreographer - uncredited, dance ensembles)* *1935 La veuve joyeuse (choreographer)* *1934 The Merry Widow (dance director)* *1934 Roast-Beef and Movies (short) (choreographer: Chinese ballet)* *1933 Going Hollywood (dance director)* *1933 Stage Mother (dance director)* *1933 Broadway to Hollywood (dance director)* *1930 The Devil's Cabaret (short) (stager: ballet)* *1930 Our Blushing Brides (stager: ballet - as Madame Albertina Rasch)* *1930 The Rogue Song (dance director)* *1930 Lord Byron of Broadway (stager: ballet - as Madame Albertina Rasch)* *1929 Devil-May-Care (ballet staging)* ** -

That's pretty awesome! A nice picture for the New Year. Quite a hobby you have, coloring these old images! It brings a new life to them. Some of your images really sparkle and take on a new vitality. Do you do this in photoshop? I posted a *Thelma White* biography to this discussion thread, at or near the earliest page. In later life, she became a bit embarassed by her revived stardom with the rediscovery of *Reefer Madness* **It's too bad about some of those early films. On the one hand I'm optimistic that some of them will turn up eventually. Where I get pessimistic is thinking that so much of this stuff is just sitting around with owners and organisations that don't care to restore or release them. -

Hi gagman! Thanks for that! *Thelma White (**Mae from Reefer Madness (1936))* would be an interesting possibility. Here's Thelma and her all girl band in the 40's: *THELMA WHITE AND HER ALL GIRL ORCHESTRA- HOLLYWOOD BOOGIE* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOcW2BHlHNs I'm curious about the movie you posted a picture of, *New Years Eve (1929).* Have you ever seen it? There's no video footprint of it on youtube or any other hosting service. That's true for so many films from that era! Meanwhile here's *Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians performing Auld Lang Syne* on somebody's Seeberg jukebox! Happy New Year everybody! -

Hi gagman! Awesome! Thanks for the pictures! Which Thelma was that in the clock picture? PS: about *Lilian Roth*. I remember reading in her autobiography that when she had the DT's, she was tripping that the walls were crawling and entirely covered with tarantulas, all of them with glowing red eyes that were staring at her! When that happens, you know it's time to cut back! What a film career she could have had, but a life in vaudeville had burned her out and caused her turn to drink. -

Hi gagman! Happy New Year to you! *Kiki (1931)* according to what I found out has not been released on video. I am systematically going through the *Busby Berkeley filmography* and digging up some of his less well known works in the process. That's the nice thing about a "project thread", as researcher and presenter, you end up learning a lot! I've posted clips to *Flying High (1931)* as well. I'm glad you liked the *Lillian Roth* material! I caught her today on TCM during their Marx Bros. marathon in *Animal Crackers (1930).* She had and projected "Élan vital", animal magnetism, "It"; too bad she had personal problems that ended up affecting her life and career. I look forward to watching *Whoopee (1930)* again, the pastel colors look so dreamy and surreal! -
*FLYING HIGH (1931)* *MGM w/ Bert Lahr, Charlotte Greenwood, Pat O'Brien, Hedda Hopper* *"Happy Landing" with Gus Arnheim and His Orchestra* ** *5 minute clip* *"We'll Dance Until Dawn"* **http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYZ5QYWPgQQ&feature=related *5 minute clip* *Busby Berkeley - Dance Until The Dawn - 1931* **http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNW-AzZdBRU *5 minute clip* *Our* *Busby Berkeley Celebration* *continues. I have only clips from this film. The musical numbers "Happy Landing" and "Dance Until Dawn" were reused in the MGM short* *Plane Nuts (1933) with the Three Stooges.*

Hi musicalnovelty! Thank you very much and same to you! I always look forward to your posts, I learn from them! *Plane Nuts* is unfortunately not available on youtube, except for a version where the poster superimposed a techno soundtrack over the original music. Not to my taste, and I didn't want to use that. *Flying High (1931)* has a portion available, with *Busby Berkeley* directed dance sequence. I am posting that to the *filmography* thread. I have since posted there two Berkeley films, *KIKI (1931)* *PALMY DAYS (1931)* ** Here is an MGM Technicolor short featuring *Curly Howard*, where he is billed as "Jerry Howard": ** *ROAST BEEF AND MOVIES (1932)* *MGM w/ Curly, Albertina Rasch Dancers* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_VINNQKwMI *Full short in two parts* This short features some very Busby Berkeley looking dance sequences. I don't know if he worked on this, as I don't see it among his credits. This one is definitely worth watching! You can definitely say that MGM had a "different idea" when it came to the "boys"! PS: I hope you enjoyed my *Lillian Roth* follow up on this thread! -
With the statuesque Charlotte Greenwood "Bend Down, Sister"? *PALMY DAYS (1931)* *Sam Goldwyn Productions w/ Eddie Cantor, Charlotte Greenwood* **http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euMPniJrASM *Full movie in 8 parts* ** ** *Busby Berkeley - Yes Yes! - Eddie Cantor - 1931* ** *Musical comedy antics in an art deco bakery (motto: "Glorifying the American Doughnut") with Eddie Cantor as an assistant to a phoney psychic, who is mistaken for an efficiency expert and placed in charge. Complications ensue when the psychic and his gang attempt to rub the payroll.*
-
*KIKI (1931)* *Sam Taylor Productions, w/ Mary Pickford, Reginald Denny* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcZu9-rdlJQ *Full movie* *Busby Berkeley's second film, and Mary Pickford's second from last film. Pickford plays a showgirl involved with a producer. Longtime Pickford fans were not used to the loose adult role that the star traded for her earlier ingenue roles and it eventually flopped at the box office.*

Hi ugaarte! The same to you and thank you very much! A lot has gone on both threads since you last posted, you might want to check some of it out! I've begun my *News Year's Eve Busby Berkeley celebration* on the *filmography* thread this morning: *VINTAGE EXPLOITATION FILMS-FILMOGRAPHY* http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?threadID=161844&tstart=0 with a hour long TCM documentary on Berkeley: *GOING THROUGH THE ROOF* (*) and: *WHOOPEE (1930)* with Eddie Cantor, in all Technicolor. I'll be posting some more today! It is a lot of work to find and present this material, but it's a labor of love, as I am helping o preserve the memory and appreciation of these films for the readership. I also thrive on comments and suggestions from others, and they are always most welcome! The community has recently handed me my birthday present of appreciation with the two threads reaching a combined hit count of over 10,000, which was a goal of mine from the beginning! More to do! Happy New Year for 2012! We won't let those Mayan killjoys spoil our fun! (*) The title references how Berkeley, not satisfied with the camera height allowed by the studio roof for one of his overhead shots, cut a hole into it! What dedication! What a maniac! Charge it to the Warner Brothers! -
From his first film project, this still was a portent of his work to come. He expected the chorus women to be more than just dancers, but also props and accessories in cheesy and suggestive tableaus that pushed the boundaries of taste and permissibility. "Whatever I can get away with" became his standard! The first of his famous trademark overhead shots. The Goldwyn Girls off screen. *WHOOPEE (1930)* *Sam Goldwyn Productions w/ Eddie Cantor, Ethel Shutta* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F_vra-v6wE&feature=related *Full movie in 10 parts* *Eddie Cantor - Makin' Whoopee* *Ten Gallon Hat dance number* *I'm very fond of this, the first Busby Berkeley film project from 1930. Shot entirely in two strip Technicolor, it has a surreal charm, with most of the picture in pastel shades of pink and green. It's title tune Makin' Whoopee, has become a standard over the years and was even featured in a recent TV commercial! Eddie Cantor had an infectious charm and humor as well.* *Based upon a successful Broadway play from 1928, staged by Florenz Ziegfeld. Sam Goldwyn, an independent producer, bought the rights to the stage production and shipped it's principals to Hollywood for the screen adaptation. At Cantor's urging, Goldwyn included dance director Busby Berkeley. Berkeley immediately took to the possibilities of the new medium, as we could see in this film. In him, the Goldwyn Girls had a strange new taskmaster! Berkeley wasn't content to let a static, front view camera capture a stage performance. He insisted on close up shots of the girls, as well as his famous overhead ones as well.* *Western sheriff Bob Wells is preparing to marry Sally Morgan; she loves part-Indian Wanenis, whose race is an obstacle. Sally flees the wedding with hypochondriac Henry Williams, who thinks he's just giving her a ride; but she left a note saying they've eloped! Chasing them are jilted Bob, Henry's nurse Mary (who's been trying to seduce him) and others.*

*A VERY HAPPY, HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO ALL, ESPECIALLY TO THE READERS AND VIEWERS OF MY EXPLOITATION FILM THREADS!* ****************************************************************************************************************** ** Yes, they were in this one! ** *Shower scene from MEET THE BARON (1933)* *MGM w/ Jimmy Durante, Zasu Pitts, Ted Healy and the Three Stooges* ** *Four minute clip* *A women's shower scene from "Cuddle College"! Very suggestive, almost soft porn. Shows a chorus girl rubbing her chest and singing along with "Can't you see we're all excited?"...* ** *The Stooges worked for MGM before going to real fame at Columbia, and appeared in some films and shorts that bore no resemblance to their more famed Columbia shorts. One of them,* *Plane Nuts (1933),* *featured elaborate Busby Berkeley type chorus girl sequences and was done with an obviously bigger budget than their later Columbia two reelers. Makes you wonder what would have become of the "boys" had they stayed at the larger studio!* *Today I am celebrating the New Year (and my birthday on Jan 1) with a* *Busby Berkeley* *commemorative on the filmography thread!* -
*A HAPPY HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR TO ALL, ESPECIALLY TO THE REGULAR READERS AND VIEWERS OF MY THREADS!* ********************************************************************************************************** *BUSBY BERKELEY- GOING THROUGH THE ROOF* **http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oru2mqUN444 *Full 1 hour documentary in 4 parts* *I'm going to launch a New Year's celebration with* *Busby Berkeley!* *According to the Mayan calendar, it may not turn out to be a "happy" new year, but that won't stop me from ushering it in with a "hey nonny na and a hotcha cha"! I will dedicate the next several posts to Berkeley and his films. Some are available on the internet in their entirety, but most are not. Fortunately his most memorable sequences are almost all posted to the internet. Those fragments are numerous and I will be posting them throughout this New Year's Eve. January 1 is also my birthday (three minutes after the clock!), so this sharing with you all will double as my special birthday bash!* *The economic times we are now living in bear uncomfortable resemblance to the 1930's depression. Berkeley's films, which arose within that depression, will have to be revived and serve the same life affirming, morale boosting purpose they did then: Berkeley, his casts and chorines will have to be resurrected, arisen from their rest. Their country, sadly enough, calls them for duty once again! They will teach us that you fight a depression, both personal and economic, with spunk, determination and morale building with beautiful girls and all the life giving things they stand for! The films will remind us that we've faced tough times before in this country; that generation had no choice but to pull through it all and go for that happy ending, just like in the movies!* *I've long considered adding Berkeley to this gallery. He wasn't the first or the only one to stage girly-show spectacles on the screen. It was how he did them that set him apart. His brilliance and vision were so unique that they stand out for all time. He was a one of a kind; there will never be another person like him!* *The word voyeurism has come up to describe his camera involvement and visual style. Moving under leg tunnels, pointing up at crotches, shower and undressing scenes, women used as ornamental patterns- it was so far out that one wonders just how he got away with it all! Some have said that his are among the most erotic scenes and films ever made, a view I share. He depersonalised his chorus women as part of a larger, erotically suggestive visual fabric. There was no lewd "act" depicted that the censors could hang him on and yet the sum total of the parts added up to quite a lewd spectacle. He confounded a censorship code that was written in terms of specific no-no's.* *The first submission today is a TCM documentary of his life and films. Do take a look, and keep an eye out for the airing of his movies when they appear on TCM! They hold up well under repeat viewing!*

You got to love the lab equipment in these old movies! Any film with Marjorie White and El Brendel has got to be a farce! The Queen of Mars! Scene from Mars. *JUST IMAGINE (1930)* *Fox Film Corporation w/ Maureen O'Sullivan, El Brendel, Marjorie White* ** http://www.veoh.com/watch/v21253500wNgbq3Cp?h1=JustImagine Full movie, but with only the first 5 minutes as preview. Watching the remainder of the film requires you to install a "veoh" player. 6 minute sequence on Mars. 6 minute opening sequence *This fantastically imaginative film calls for more than the usual number of illustrative stills! This one falls into the "What were they thinking/smoking?" category! A rare example of a science fiction musical; utterly silly and whimsical. The world of 1980, as imagined in 1930! People have flying cars and babies come out of an automat machine! Story shifts to Mars, where the women wear Art Deco style metallic mini-skirts! Just Imagine is best remembered today for the huge, elabotate urban model sets designed by architect and set designer William Cameron Menzies.* *I regret that I could find no other complete upload than Veoh.com. After the first 5 minutes, you have to install their "veohplayer" to keep watching. I dislike and distrust video hosting websites that require their own plug in and have avoided posting such links in the past. This film however, is such a treat and so unusual that some of you may want to take the trouble.* **** *New York, 1980: airplanes have replaced cars, numbers have replaced names, pills have replaced food, government-arranged marriages have replaced love, and test tube babies have replaced ... well, you get the idea. Scientists revive a man struck by lightning in 1930; he is rechristened "Single O". He is befriended by J-21, who can't marry the girl of his dreams because he isn't "distinguished" enough -- until he is chosen for a 4-month expedition to Mars by a renegade scientist. The Mars J-21, his friend, and stowaway Single O visit is full of scantily clad women doing Busby Berkeley-style dance numbers and worshiping a fat middle-aged man.*

From the arctic to the tropics, all in one hot dance! Making those bananas stand up! ** *TURN ON THE HEAT from SUNNYSIDE UP (1929)* *Fox Film Corporation w/ Janet Gaynor* *Six minute musical segment* *In keeping with my decision to post segments on this thread, here is a legendary piece of suggestive film from that early sound era. The "eskimo" chorus women turn an arctic landscape into a steamy tropical one within minutes, through the sheer power of sex appeal and dancing! A case of "global warming" and "renewable energy" before such terms had gained common currency in the language! Turn on the heat indeed!* -
Help! Professor in need of film "hero" suggestions...
ThelmaTodd replied to pencilographer's topic in General Discussions
Hello pencilographer! *First of all, let me extend a warm welcome to you as a newcomer to this web community!* I strongly suggest you look at the work of director *Frank Capra,* not just for heroes, but to understand what heroism meant to him and his mass audience in the 1930's and 1940's. A decidedly populist theme runs through his work throughout the 1930's depression- the elevation of Joe Everyman, the decent all-American common guy, represented by *Jimmy Stewart and Gary Cooper*, infused with idealism and struggling against the cynical and powerful. (Capra was also reputed to have had a bust of Mussolini in his office. Make of that what you will!) As you are teaching a school course, it would not be remiss to mention that anti, pseudo, false heroes can also be made for films by political regimes, for purposes of mass indoctrination and propaganda. Nazi, Communist and Fascist cinema all actively engaged in this. I would point to *Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph Of The Will (1934)*, which deified Hitler to the German masses, or *Hitlerjunge Quex (1933)* as cases in point. It would make for lively class counterpoint to contrast the populist American cult of Jimmy Stewart with the state sponsored German cult of Hitler Youth Quex! Almost 80 years later, Triumph Of The Will is still too controversial, too much of a "hot potato" for general exhibition. I have posted a youtube upload of the complete film to my *VINTAGE EXPLOITATION FILMS-FILMOGRAPHY* thread in *Your favorites*: http://forums.tcm.com/thread.jspa?threadID=161844&start=0&tstart=0 (It's back on page 5 as of today) -

Hi gagman! The *filmography and discussion* threads are quite a long running research project, so far uncovering over *180 films*. The more of them I discover and present, the more I find! Some of them are rare indeed! Contributions, comments and suggestions are most welcome! The two threads combined have just seen over 10,000 hits. Reaching this milestone indicator was a goal of mine at project inception. *I wish to heartily thank the community for it's interest and acceptance, and look forward to continuing with many more films of this broad genre!*
