Cine....They did do that with Miriam Hopkins. She Martha and in the remake, the Aunt.
They should cast the "bad seed" (Mary) as the Aunt.

-
Cine....Thanks for clearing that up. I appreciate it. As far as anyone being sexy enough for
Audrey Hepburn, who was? IMO, she didn't deserve the leading men she did get.
Gregory Peck, William Holden, Bogie, Gary Cooper, Fred Astaire. I am not a fan of hers,
obviously. I think Glenn Ford is very sexy, even w/o Rita.
Sexy enough for: Gene Tierney, Eleanor Parker, Lee Remick, Stella Stevens, Gloria Grahame,
Dorothy Malone, Jeanne Crain, Jane Russell, Carolyn Jones, Angie Dickinson, Elke Sommer,
& Inger Stevens.
Shall we agree to disagree. Cheers! Bg

Happyjackfan...I mentioned C.J. I had forgotten about "Knot's Landing". I do remember him
in that series!
All in all, great perfomances by all!!

Alright, already! Why don't you say what your objection is. Age? He was 46 and A. Hepburn
was 33.
What does "Oh gee, Bargar and Hmmm" mean?!!

WELCOME, h cue!!!
I used to walk, hand in hand, with my Mother to the local movie theatre at least twice a
week. There was the main feature, second (
movie, newsreel, "selected short subjects",and a cartoon. The movies were changed ONCE week. There was popcorm made fresh
from kernels, candy, and, later on, hand-dipped ice cream cones. Ushers were dressed
in full uniform and escorted you to your seat, if you wished.
I came to classic movies by just being there.
As I grew older I started attending withfriends. We collected movie star cards and movie magazines. We traded back and forth.
In high school, I worked at the "refreshment stand" at that same theatre and my boyfriend
at the time, was an usher. Later, a serious date was getting dressed up, going out to
dinner, and attending one of the big theatres "downtown".
Classic films are part of my history!
At times we knew they were unrealistic and pure escapism, but that was a good thing.
Times were tough for people. Unfortunately, immigrants got the idea that the streets
were paved with gold and we lived in places such as the apartments and homes depicted
in some movies. But, we also had "The Grapes of Wrath"and "Sullivan's Travels". We had
WW I & WW II & Gangland/Prohibition movies.
The classic movie actors/actresses were a joy to watch. So many names, including
stars, supporting players, directors. We all had our favorites.
I should put this writing in present tense, because thanks to TCM we are still enjoying
these wonderful presentations.
I believe we have standout movies and actors today and I certainly enjoy many of these.
However, with a past like mine, walking hand in hand with my Mom or a boyfriend, or
joining a friend, classic films have a special place in my memory.

I consider myself a regular and I agree with both of you. As my Mother used to say,
"sticks & stones may break my bones,.....etc." However, this isn't the place for
name-calling so let's show a little of Aretha's advice. R E S P E C T!!
I have said before that I am not a fan of Rose McGowan but the powers that be must
have a reason. I am looking forward to Alec Baldwin. I am a fan of Regis Philbin and
I think he would be a good replacement. He is "older" ';) but he has the experience and
knowledge. Just my personal opinion.

Sorry, Cine....My computer has been sick, but it is all well. James Garner does fine in
dramas, but I kept waiting for the punch line. It is just me. I don't know...maybe Glenn
Ford.
-
I liked both movies considering the era in which they were released. I did think that
James Garner was miscast. Shirley MacClaine was excellent. Audrey Hepburn played
herself (not a fan).
I thought one pertinent fact that R. Osborne failed to mention is: Miriam Hopkins played
"Martha" in the first movie and than played the dreadful "Aunt" in the second movie.

Fred...My husband & I just watched this film and enjoyed it very much! Thanks for
veritying that Adolph Caesar won the awards. I vaguely remember that. He was
excellent. We also thought the actor who played CJ was terrific! Actually, all of the
cast was good!

Another channel that has messed up BIG-TIME is A & E. Arts & Entertaiment, I think
not!! And......BBCA! Where have all my British mysteries gone?! Thank goodness, for
PBS which has Masterpiece Mystery Theatre and Masterpiece Theatre.
Oh well. That's the way it crumbles, cookie-wise.

Jack..I am so glad to see this post today. I just finished watching "Downstairs" this
morning. I have a whole new appreciation of John Gilbert. Some of his silents were
fabulous, but this was pure joy. He dominated every scene & with Paul Lukas, that isn't
easy. I enjoyed the supporting cast as well. Virginia Bruce, so pretty. Reginald Owen,
the type part he does so well.
We definitely have missed out on the potential pleasure of watching John Gilbert moving
on.

RainingVs.....Barbra Streisand is a fabulous singer. That's all, so I agree with you.
However, I loved Ingrid B.in" Casablanca" and Vivien L. in "Streetcar".

FredC...If you are shocked about L.Rainer, look out for the fans of Garbo's. I, personally,
agree with you about Garbo, however. Here goes...I also do not see the appeal of, are you
ready for it.....Jean Harlow. There, I said it and I'm glad.
As far a disliking actors who are too/etc., as Patfl said, that isn't me. I don't have a problem
with over-acting, playing to the camera, or whatever you want to call it. If the part calls for it, that is
fine. After all, one of the biggest over-actors we have is Charles Laughton and I am
crazy about him!!
To add to the list of being themselves in a role: John Wayne(except he hated horses) and
Robert Mitchum come to mind.
