ILRM...I don't understand this post. Why are you answering Cine...with this statement? I definitly don't think C. should drown and I DO appreciate her intelligence. BUT, are the rest of us "chopped liver". -

"Au Contraire". May I respectfully submit that Martha IS a narcissist. nar-cis-sism - inordinate fascination with oneself; excessive self-love; vanity I would say killing her aunt, marrying someone to keep from being blackmailed, flaunting her authority, condescending attitude, proud of her power, using sex to win over Sam What would you call it? I am sincerely interested in a friendly way. -
BRAVO, Poinciana!
-
COURAGE, Nando! Get off the fence and land on the side of the defenders of the right to express our unpopular opinions. "United we stand, divided we fall". (Ok, I have wooed enough

MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS Mick...I thought the direction was unique. The way it was set up so the camera looked as though it was moving through the house! The cast was perfect. What a beauty Delores Costello was.

Thanks, Cinemaven! In going back over the thread I noticed someone had already picked B. Stanwyck for a narcissist. OOPS! NARCISSISTIC - How about - MICHAEL CAINE in "Alfie", JENNIFER JONES in MADAME BOVARY, and LAURENCE OLIVIER in "Sleuth". -
Hi, Butters.....A Grandmother IS a Mother as far as I am concerned! I think Frank will be okay. How about it, Frank? (Of the normal 2 sets of grandparents, I only knew my parternal grandma and she passed away when I was 9 yrs. old. Her name was Ida Mae and she was so sweet. She had very long white hair, which she wore in a bun. When I spent the night, she would let me comb her pretty hair & then we would fall asleep holding hands. I hope I didn't get too sentimental - I just remember her with such fondness).

Thanks, Frank! I had a very nice Mother's Day! How about GRANDMOTHERS. I read "King's Row" when I was a teenager and I thought the relationship with Parris and his grandmother was very loving. Then in the movie, MARIA OUSPENSKAYA played Madam Von Eln and I loved her! MARIA O. also played Charles Boyer's beloved "Janou" in "Love Affair(1939) - the original "An Affair to Remember"( 1959). The wonderful CATHLEEN NESBITT played Cary Grant's "Janou". Memorable Moms: PIPER LAURIE in "Carrie", JO VAN FLEET in "I'll Cry Tomorrow", JUDITH ANDERSON & MADELEINE SHERWOOD in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", NANCY KELLY in "The Bad Seed". ( Devoted but sad and twisted Moms!!) TV Moms: "LUCY", WILMA FLINTSTONE & BETTY RUBBLE , AGNES MOOREHEAD on "Bewitched", MARY T. MOORE on "The Dick Van Dyke Show", JUNE LOCKHART on "LOST IN SPACE". Whew! I am exhausted! I will be back later. Good thread, Frank!

WOW! Everyone has such great answers! Psychopathic - Anthony Hopkins in "Silence of the Lambs" Machiavellian - Glenn Close in "Dangerous Liasons" Narcissistic - Barbara Stanwyck - "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" -
KUDOS, Mongo! I have always been a fan of Wm.Bendix. Fairly recently, TCM showed "The Hairy Ape" and I was mesmerized by his performance. He had the most beautiful eyes. When he looked up at Susan Hayward, with his filthy, sweaty face upturned, his eyes shone with expression. Simple animal lust.

Nando...Don't give in TOO much!! I will throw in a PB & J and a banana split with nuts, whipped cream, and a cherry on top...IF you don't surrender!!
-
Yes, yes, yes!! Totally agree about Dan Duryea!!!
-
Hey - Nando & Poinciana, come on in the water's fine. Look - I am still swimming with the sharks. Mick & I started the whole Brando debate. I also mentioned James Dean. Oh, horrors, I did it again!!!
-
Mick....since you mentioned Brando, here goes! I was afraid I would be bombarded with "boos", "how could you", etc. Well, I am in this deep, so...I have never seen the appeal of James Dean either. Same "method" of acting for both of them. Stammer, look at the ground, make odd faces. I am not a fan of Gloria Grahame or Lizabeth Scott. There, (whew) !!! Message was edited by: Bargar

I thought it was entertaining. On the other thread about Rebecca's lookalike, I posted I thought Margaret Lockwood because of watching this movie. I read the book, which I had picked up at a book fair.

Mongo - I love this picture of Mommy Eve. Her children (2) are adorable in thiis picture. It is hard to imagine E.A. as a Mom. (Wisecracking, sophisticated, & elegantly dressed.)
-
The California Raisins - (cuz I heard it through the grapevine) HARRY POTTER or THE LORD OF THE RINGS (ok?

For a really good Tarzan yell, tune in to an old Carol Burnett show. The audience loved it!

FOUR WEDDINGS & A FUNERAL - Very clever FATHER OF THE BRIDE - Spencer Tracy wonderful - Liz Taylor beautiful THE CATERED AFFAIR - Bette Davis & Ernest Borgnine are so good in this. A excellent study in how planning a wedding affects everyone. SOUND OF MUSIC - "How do you solve a problem like Maria"...perfect wedding march

"Stage Door" is such a good movie. The interplay between all the actors is excellent. Eve Arden certainly held her own among many other talented actresses. Her character in "Stage Door' carries her cat around her neck & shoulders & I kept thinking, as I watched, as a struggling actress, the cat would be the closest she would ever come to a fur wrap. Thanks, Mongo! I am of big fan of E.A. and you for this thread. Message was edited by: Bargar

This morning on "Live", Regis was reading an article from one of the N.Y. papers about "Sexiest Movie Couples". He commented on a few and his comments were good! I don't remember all of them, but here are a few: Bogart & Bacall - "To Have & Have Not" Wm.Hurt & Kathleen Turner - "Body Heat" B.Lancaster & Deb.Kerr - "From Here to Eternity" L. DeCaprio & K. Winslet - "Titanic" B. Pitt & A. Jolie - "Mr. & Mrs. Smith Has there ever been a thread on this? We movie lovers know there are many more sexy couples in movies! Message was edited by: Bargar
