I don't think I am smarter than anyone on this board. But I do have common sense. Can you guess who said this dumb remark? " Bootlegging is a major concern to the studios. If we don't support the official releases of films on DVD by buying them instead of knock-offs, we are contributing to the problem of why studios feel there is no market for classic era films. " Why is bootlegging a concern to the studios? cuz lz encyclopedia sez so. This is a good reason why I don't hang out here. I have to read this drivel. 1. you are too old - the studios don't give a damn about you. 2. you are too old - do you want to see certain movies before you die? 3. you are too old - do you want to wait for the studios who don't give a damn about you to officially release a movie on dvd they have not even bothered to show on tv? 4. Why bother concerning yourself about people who don't care about you? 5. Buy trade sell etc. whatever movies you want. Hollywood is not worthy of your consideration. Think about you. Your needs. If you don't care about you don't expect total strangers to care. Do what you gotta do. Its your life. -
I have this movie if anybody wants it. scope I know a lady who got separated from her mother just like the girl in this pic. like a bad penny the mother turned up again later. one thing of interest - during the party, they play records using a tube amp. this is something I would like to get bcuz I have alot of 50's records 45s & 78s. I think they would sound better with an authentic tube amp.

tcm wagon train attacked by big boppers indians. I now ask the court to allow neil simon to testify. neil simon..... yes. do you solemnly swear that the testimony you are about to give will be the truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth? neil simon: I do Mr. simon....... is the censored tv version of Prisoner of 2nd ave worth more or less than the theatrical version? neil simon: considerably less mr. simon.....would you agree with the assertion that the tv version is completely worthless? neil simon: it is not only worthless but it is a mockery of the story - my intentions. it defeats the entire purpose of the story because the censorship draws attention to itself & takes attention away from the story. the defense rests.
-
nobody has offered a reason why a censored version was shown except it was a mistake. all I said was there was no mistake. it was intentional. that is the entire debate about it. since tv channels are not in the habit of making mistakes, & tv channel employees are not stupid & given the movie in question it is more likely the censorship was deliberate. it is hoped when the truth comes out mr. programmer will admit it.

"He values this community along with the ideas and opinions expressed in this gathering place of TCM's most ardent fans." if he is who you guys say he is, then he must value my opinion even more than yours since it is the only known plausible reason. in addition, I am the "real" big bopper - y'know the guy who sang "chantilly lace"....... I got out of the plane before it crashed using a parachute. I choose to stay dead because I owed too many debts. youve had your 15 min. & now your protestations have grown ever so boring, darling. the best thing for all of us to do is admit I'm right - there was no mistake - & move on to other topics you may know something about........
-
sorry but I dont buy the mistake "theory"..... exactly how was the "mistake" made? in order to shoot me down that the "mistake" was intentional, you need to prove me wrong. until that time lets agree to accept tcm showed the cut tv version deliberately. what the reasons for doing so - that is debatable. my idea is as good as any & more logical. whats a tcm programmer? just somebody with a sockpuppet screen name. I could start an identity called tcm programmer & you'd fall for my bs hook line & sinker. lets get this straight: TCM showed the cut version because TCM wanted to show the cut version. no mistake was made. get it got it good.
-
that is not the wrong version nor is it a mistake. the cut version is the tv version. you saw it on tv, right? they knew exactly what they were doing. if they show the theatrical version, they have to pay $. so they showed the version that is a freebie (for them). it is looking like tcm is beginning to unravel.

this board is irretrievably stuck in triviality hell.
-
you know I dont spend alot of time here gossiping but I am very interested in movies - the ideas more than the trivialities. I want to escape into it ........ anyway on the Night & the City dvd I saw jules dassin interview where he said to his regret he never bothered to read the book. this got my curiosity going & I was able to get a copy easily of Night & the City by Gerald Kersh 1946 so what the hell.....I have not read it yet either but I started to.What is very unusual is at the beginning is a glossary of cockney slang which I would like to quote a bit............... note on cockney rhyming slang- this is old cockney. its origins are lost somewhere back of the food markets. it is still used. "titfer" for instance is HAT - "**** for tat"......If you say: "I took my daisyroots & ploughed deep all the flying kite" - you mean- "I took off my boots & went to sleep all the night"...........rhyming slang isn't criminal slang. it is used mostly by fruit salesmen. BALL O CHALK ---walk. "take a ball o chalk" means "scram" BASH -if a girl goes on the bash she goes on the streets - becomes a tart BOGIES - police BUSIES - detectives - plain clothes police..........they are "busy" with your affairs - and you dont like them. To say to a man of the underworld: "Dont you be so busy" is much the same as to say: "Keep your nose out of my affairs or else..." CASO - brothel......... from spanish casa......a brothel is a "case". COWSON -son of a cow - a term of abuse. FANNY - short for "sweet fanny adams"...... which means "a lot of baloney" FLASH AMERICAN SMOKES - Overdressed American Negroe GOD-FORBIDS - kids - rhyming slang again JOHNNY RONCE - rhyming slang - ponce LUMBERED - arrested - caught by the police NICKER - a nicker is a pound sterling - about $4.00 ON THE RIBS - broke - impoverished PONCE - pimp ROZZER - policeman STRIKE-ME-DEAD - bread.... in cockney rhyming slang TWICER - double crosser get the book ....... read the book ......... do something useful .....this is american slang for "good advice"....................

Just finished with the dvd which left more questions than answers. there is a commentary by tim lucas (mario bava expert) & john phillip law. I also viewed at the same time the vhs which is completely different. I have never seen a commentary before! Tim Lucas had virtually nothing to say about how there is two english language versions ...altho he was blabbing nonstop...John Philip Law said he tried to get a print to show & could not. paramount did not have one. italy did not have it. Watch the movie. you must understand Diabolik is a left wing free love james bond. Diabolik was destroyed by Paramount. What you see now is a bastardized version. the vhs tape altho dubbed in english has italian credits. the dvd also dubbed in english has english credits but the dubbing uses different voices from the vhs. tim lucas had an opportunity to clear up any confusion & chose to dummy up. Paramount hated the movie. They redid the music & lowered the volume thus changing the impact. - weakening it. they hated the dubbing & redid the dubbing with the new lower music. retitled it "Danger Diabolik".....they hated the movie because it was the exact opposite of what they were expecting. what I think happened is this... paramount destroyed the original version. they created a bogus english dubbed version. this was put on vhs. then when dvd came along they got a new italian print & redid the music & dubbing again! the print is better quality but still the pic is flat. they ruined it twice! about the music. it is by ennio morriconi......the music is intended to be much louder than the dialog. youre supposed to feel the movie. that is the intended effect. hollywood is not too good on feeling. there was supposed to be a soundtrack album. it never happened & the music tapes mysteriously vanished. there is a hit song "deep down" which was issued as a 45rpm in italy & it is a collectors item. great song.

I will try your method - catch you later with the results.

I am watching this movie for the 2nd time in 2 days & thought I'd ask you some questions about it. It is originally 3-D - & the system used to film it I have heard is left & right cameras creating 2 negatives. on playback to get the 3-D effect you need synchronized projectors with each print having the exact same number of frames. I watch the movie in stereo - 2 different versions I use the hv version & another I recorded off tv. I have heard warners abandoned the 3d completely creating prints using left & right scenes. therefore we may never see the 3d version again? I suppose some of you experts might know more about this - hope you can shed some light on it.........see ya round.......

Polanski Asks Prosecutor to Review Film?s Claims
Big_Bopper replied to Film_Fatale's topic in General Discussions
hi cutie, want a lolly pop? -
i've seen a few not many - pandora's box & 3penny opera - they're all good as good as the print they can get........i don't buy em but anyway.... i did have a problem with one. if you havent seen it check it out: night and the city................... the pic is really high quality & maybe criterion was not to blame..........but there are two versions of "night and the city" - the american one & there is a british version. the british version has music by benjamin frankel & on the american one franz waxman. it might be edited differently who knows? on the criterion dvd they have a comparison of the two musics.......... duh how about the alternate version? maybe it was "not available"..........i don't need some fuknukle comparing for me. I do my own comparing quite nicely if they let me. ................................... it was said dassin liked the american version better. ok cool but still why bother with the comparison? could be criterion was expecting the alternate version & it was not given so they came up with a comparison gimmick. WHAT DO YOU SAY LINDA?

*The 2008 What Can TCM do to improve itself thread*
Big_Bopper replied to TripleHHH's topic in General Discussions
create a tcm2 which can feature an emphasis on intl art pix as opposed to hollywood assembly line merchandise. -
I'm gunna try n post some pix of the new scenes but before that I want to explain the censorship... lang & rogge were both married to harbou & in the movie there was a wife swapping plot as well - it is art imitating life?! this is joh looking at the statue of his wife in the mad scientists house this is slim who was assigned the task of reporting his sons movements this is a shot of the vice den yoshiwara one of the kids trying to escape the flood "hey goil - dint I meet choo before?..." th th th thatz all fff folks
-
I reread the thread & I was worried what I wrote would sound really stupid but that was the best stuff I ever wrote on the tcm board. __________________________________________________& the post that was deleted was one of the best things I've ever written anyware. .......................................................................y'know once I was really feeling in a funny mood & I was on this board & wrote this long humorous composition. & I kept rereading it to make sure all the punctuation was just right, it was great! better than I thought myself capable of doing. when I posted it the person responsible for censorship did not get it & just deleted it instantly & it took 45 min or more to write!? at least I knew the person & said "Why did you do that?" what he said just made me think he was too intellectually challenged to grasp it. he reacted when he should have been patient. the internet is funny that way - people misinterpret everything...& they are very jealous ............................................................................................................ ..btw I got lucky & found an early vhs of THE THING 1951 which is 80 min. before they restored it. the quality is superb. they dulled the movie to match the bad quality restored footage.
-
I think you should have the decency to admit you removed my post & your reasons for doing so. that is the responsibility that goes along with being a censor. I think I know who it was & I think I know why but I want to hear it from you. I am giving you your chance to explain your actions. make use of it.
-
when you talk about england movies you are really talking about education. michael balcon was very bright. look at the equivalent here. harry cohn a virtual bird brain. warner bros. dumb - mayer complete idiot, goldwyn cant read etc... great great money counters. if you took them as a group to see the mona lisa without telling them, they'd say: "pitcha ovva dame... so what?" really dummies. england movies are of a higher plane. they make you work, think, get involved, analyze, american movies make you zombies. lumps. I know I'm generalizing. EALING MOVIES are banned on tcm. because of michael balcon? that stuff happened in 1938. it is now 2008..............70 YEARS!? talk about nursing a grudge?
-
tcm has shown : secret partner, violent playground & woman of straw... that I know of. not very much as you can see....... one pic that is really special is Train of Events.... it is like Dead of Night in that several directors were involved & the type of movie is similar in that 4 different stories are told culminating in a train ride in which all the people in the 4 stories are on the train. Basil Dearden directed two stories but it is impossible to know exactly how much but for sure he is responsible for The Actor story which is awesome. it has Peter Finch in his very first role fresh from australia & his wife Mary Morris. if you have seen mary morris you will know she is great & unique in the history of movies. here they are & finch is turning off the record of their love song. the movie is so good its hard to describe & hard to find. it was cut here! & therefore you need to find an english print. luckily it was shown once here uncut around 1990 & that is the one I have.if you can get it get it.

I want to talk about Michael Balcon as you did bring it up & I can assure you even 60 years later Michael Balcon is still unmentionable on tcm... He is the greatest person in film history. & for that reason alone he is unmentionable. But the situation as regards MGM & Mayer is not in dispute because it was described in detail in his book. mgm hired Balcon as its british studio head to make pix over there. Balcon thought Mgm knew who he was & they did not. can you believe it? (this is my retelling which might be inaccurate) Mayer visited the British studio & it was making a picture & mayer picked up some dame in a music hall & wanted Balcon to put her in the pic. Balcon told him: "don't be a fool" as he had Vivien Leigh cast in the part. Mayer reduced Balcon to office boy as revenge for saying that. people in hollywood have very long memories. Balcon took over Ealing after that & was responsible for perhaps the greatest output of pix ever. but it didn't end. the grudge just went on & on.......... until today it is still here! the thing is mgm could have had a great amount of pics produced by Balcon worth hundreds of millions$ of dollars which was thrown away out of stupidity. Mayer had to be the stupidest person ever in the movie business. a pathetic figure. tcm will never show Ealing pix. they might show innocuous ones occasionally but this is one of the reasons I dislike tcm. robert osborne will not tell you what I just did. gutless.
